I'm happy with my "not so hidden valley"... My lawnmower blade is my yard leveler, as it slices through the tall lumps and distributes them around the yard, while the rain washes them into all the low valleys. :)
I'm in the process of doing a part of my lawn for fall. I've got 15 yards of topsoil that I'm moving. Instead of the Gorilla cart like you have I purchased a Brinly 17 cu. ft. pull behind cart. You are right, something like this is a must for moving dirt especially at 67 years young! Like you were, I'm totally new to yard seeding, growing, everything. Your video and instruction have given me the confidence that I needed to now seed it! Thank you young Sir!
ahhhh dry out the soil completely that's genius. i used soil a couple years ago and could not understand why it was just burying my grass. now i know, thanks man
Thank you for the video. I hope to start leveling my yard in the next couple of weeks, but it's a daunting task. I'm currently mowing over 5 acres of our property, somewhere around 250,000 square feet. I'm heading to the lumber store tomorrow to buy 8 foot long 4x4s to make a large version of a leveling rake that I can attach to the 3 point hitch on my tractor. We built the house in 2006 in the middle of a sloped hay field and the lawn gets bumpier every year; after watching your video now I know it's the organic material in the soil breaking down.
I still have 3 minutes left of this video but I have to stop to comment already. Phenomenal job on this video! So helpful and informative, but also it all makes sooo much sense! Thank you!
Thanks for the great video. Besides putting nitrogen down a week before leveling, should i spray anything else on the new dirt/sand/seed mix? Thanks in advance!

Love it my dude. I have a mini-lawn of about 300 sqft. I tried to level it last year with all-purpose sand. Now I know to use mason sand and to at least mix in some top soil. Thank you very much for the informative video.
THANK YOU GEORGE! I'm just starting to just get my materials I'm gonna need . It's very confusing for me ( a person who knows NADA but lawn care) ..lol all I know is when it's time to cut the grass. I have a VERY VERY Unleveled front yard. I have 1 HUGE DIP,then many lil dips ,bald spots, weeds ,you name it I have it. I don't know where to start and can't afford to hire a professional. I've been learning alot from videos like yours & others about what kind of soil, grass seeds, fertilizer, compost and all. I know its gonna take me awhile but I'll get there. Thank again for your help, advice and videos.
We are in the same position. Front yard wasn't taken that great a care of by previous owners. We have 1 major hole. Looks like a tree may have been removed from there. Then 1 decent dip and the rest are kinda manageable but pretty bald. We have st. Augustine grass and we're looking at all the videos to see how to fix some of these without killing the few good spots. Thankfully our side and back yards are just fine.
Thanks for making these videos. All your info was clear and concise, and now I'm armed with enough knowledge to make some mistakes of my own. Really though, this and your other lawn levelling video are what I needed to know where to begin. Thanks!
My lawn was sodded 18 months ago and this will be the first growing season I can start top leveling. Glad I saw this video in my feed because you answered most of the questions I had been wondering about. Thanks for sharing your tips..... I can’t wait to get started!
Props on the lawn leveling tips. Fyi. The tree in your background is planted and prune very well. Root flare on the tree is exposed. No mulch volcano touching the tree base. Very nice to see.
Thanks! I refuse to have any volcanos on my property, its a new subdivision and all my neighbors have huge mounds, i tell them but they wont listen:( Soon my trees will be the only ones left!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Do you have any more details on the proper way to mulch around trees? Based on the comments, it sounds like you should leave a gap around the base of the tree and mulch and then just keep the mulch relatively flat, rather than a huge mound. Is that the gist of it?
Good video man, I especially liked the pacing, kept my attention the whole time. I feel like some of the other guys get distracted and or add in way too much b roll and the video gets hella long with no real substance. Thanks for the tips!

no problem Jeff, the good news is, the slower you are in the leveling process, the better the results will be. it always better to apply light layers over time than to go all out at once. Good luck with your project!

Excellent video. We have a lawn that seems more prone to growing cattails than grass. Besides the ruts we have, we have about six areas ranging from 2x3' to 12 x 18 ' that holds water up to almost two weeks after a rain.
First time watching one of your video. And kinda had the jiff of a lot of this.. but one thing I didn’t think of 1/2” on grass to level. I always left it taller. Thanks for this video.
Awesome advice. Never thought about incorporating sand into the mix. I thought that it was dirt only. No wonder my yard is crap...Off to the beach I go!
I hope you're talking about a beach in some river or other fresh water body! Sand from the beach (sea) with it's very high salt content, won't be friendly to your lawn, at all! ;-) BTW it's soil, not dirt. What most don't realize is that soil, compost, etc. is basically organic material that will feed the microorganisms in the soil. As such it will be consumed making the level return to it's previous condition! That's the reason why people using vast amounts of compost in their gardens. Don't see much change in the general height, even (or specially) after years of application. Otherwise it would pile up quite a lot, which it doesn't. ;-)
Thanks for all the info. As a woman who loves taking care of the lawn, I was wondering how to get rid of the dips! I will do my lawn in sections with 9500 sf which is a bit much. The entire lawn won't need leveling, thankfully. Also, i love how you respond to each comment! You're amazing 👏!
That sounds like quite the project! but it sounds like you have a solid plan, the good news is... the more level you get it over time.. the easier it gets:) And no probem! i always try to help out as much as possible, sometimes it gets overwhelming but thats alright, i enjoy it!
Speaking of your cart. I bought a ground work dump cart from tractor supply and it is awesome. it will move about 1/2 cubic yard of sand and still be easy to dump if you load it a little rear heavy. the rear wheels roll forward while dumping to ease the process. it comes with a really sturdy handle for pulling by hand and you can pull the pin slide the handle down the shaft and it's ready to hook to your lawn mower
Thank you so much for the tips on the garden cart and sand size. Adam and I are just about to do our small lawn in our new place in a few months those two tips will save our backs and our mower. Subbed!
We have voles out here and those things are ridiculous, I ended up getting some of the solar powered vibrating spikes that you put into the ground and from what I can see there have not been any of those little rodents around I guess they can’t tolerate the sound from the vibrating of the stick every minute. They absolutely destroyed my lawn but we live in Utah and the area where we are at 6 to 10 inches below the surface once you get through the topsoil is beach sand because millions of years ago it used to be the edge of the ocean and the great Salt Lake. When we moved here I didn’t know but I need to rent a skid steer to move stuff around in the yard and I was blown away after I got through the topsoil it was basically play sand so no wonder those little rodents have the best time ever but not at my house anymore. Those spikes drove them out. Amazon. They were called Thenos. I really think they worked.
Great video George. What about really deep spots? I have two areas where trees were cut and stump grinded years ago and the lawn has sunk where the remains of the stump have decomposed beneath the surface. Am I best to load those dips with soil and just seed it this fall? They are probably 6-8” lower than the rest of my lawn.
Hi George, really liked your video. I bought a new house and moved in last November. We have a small turf, almost putting type of grass. I'm needing to level the lawn as we are having major issues all over. I'm wanting what I would call a sandy loam type of soil to be delivered and I think I need about 4 yards. Most of our problem lies in that the house was built and they added 3-1/2 feet before they poured the foundation. It is a golf course lot and in the back yard there is a 4-1/2 foot tall X 75' stone retaining wall. After they installed it, they back filled with dirt and it is like walking on a magic carpet; it is so uneven. After looking at your video and seeing that you mix a bag of sand with a bag of Scott soil, I began to realize how important that it is to do it right. So, I'm going to order the special rake and broom and see if I can't do this thing myself, although I'm pushing 70 years old. Yes, that is a lot of sandy loam, but then the costs of a crew to spread is about $150 per yard. With the gorilla cart, I'm thinking of doing this myself. Thanks for the great videos!!
Thank you Paul, it will no doubt be a lot of work but no need to rush it, the great thing about leveling is the slower you go, the better results you will have. Just be sure to keep your dirt dry and you will have great results. Thanks for sharing and good luck!
Good stuff George. I'm leveling my lawn towards the end of May this year. I'm mostly concentrating on really deep spots this year. I think next year is when I'll go for the whole yard. I'm sitting around 7k sq ft. Tons and tons.
I love those Hardy gloves! They protect your hands as well as the fancy expensive brands, you can actually feel what you're doing, and you don't feel terrible if they get torn up because they didn't cost a fortune.
Great video! Thank you. I'm starting the leveling process this year. It's going to take several years since my entire lot is sloped front to back. I need to do a little terracing along with to even be able to level! Also low spots in a slow draining lawn can be mosquito breeding areas. I found that out last year when we had rain, rain, rain. BTW, it's in red clay soil.
Thanks glena! much appreciated! if you want to help your drainage issues, aerorate your lawn and THEN level your lawn with sand. When those holes in your clay soil get filled with sand, you will notice a huge difference in drainage. Good luck!

Thanks to this video, I'm starting to realize what a difficult dream and goal I've set for myself. There's no way with all the plans and ideas we have to revamp the home and property (for better use and profitability) that I should be pouring so much time, energy, and effort into transitioning from a weedy yard to an actual lawn. Now I know leveling the whole lawn would take years, patience, and 😅 likely hundreds of dollars each year...nope. I think I'm good. Maybe I'll catch a video that really helps me see the benefits and not just think of the aesthetic; but there's no way I should be prioritizing this right now. Thanks my guy!

George isn't a pro, he's better than a pro. He's passionate about lawn care and it really shows. Videos are top notch. I just subscribed.
EXCELLENT video George. This video should be Leveling 101 for everyone thinking about or doing a leveling project. Good job!
Thanks Brian! Lots of mistakes and headaches packed into this video 😂
I seen you a few years ago and it’s that time again, thanks for your time! I know these things can be time consuming, but you’re appreciated!
thanks for popping by again! good luck with your project!
I'm happy with my "not so hidden valley"... My lawnmower blade is my yard leveler, as it slices through the tall lumps and distributes them around the yard, while the rain washes them into all the low valleys. :)
Lmao that sounds like a solid process!
Although, i doubt you'd be here if that was the case 😊
I'm in the process of doing a part of my lawn for fall. I've got 15 yards of topsoil that I'm moving. Instead of the Gorilla cart like you have I purchased a Brinly 17 cu. ft. pull behind cart. You are right, something like this is a must for moving dirt especially at 67 years young! Like you were, I'm totally new to yard seeding, growing, everything. Your video and instruction have given me the confidence that I needed to now seed it! Thank you young Sir!
How did you know I needed this? I didn't know this was an idea on TH-cam was trying to figure it out on my own. Thanks
I can read your mind 😂😂😂
ahhhh dry out the soil completely that's genius. i used soil a couple years ago and could not understand why it was just burying my grass. now i know, thanks man
Thank you for the video.
Good luck with you project! with the price of lumber i would just buy a leveling drag outright or fabricate one from metal
Not even kidding I've been researching, and this is no doubt the most informative and useful leveling video.
Awesome dylan, happy to hear.
Lots of headache went into these mistakes haha, happy to share my experience w you
I still have 3 minutes left of this video but I have to stop to comment already. Phenomenal job on this video! So helpful and informative, but also it all makes sooo much sense! Thank you!
No problem MT much appreciated!
Thanks for the great video.
Besides putting nitrogen down a week before leveling, should i spray anything else on the new dirt/sand/seed mix? Thanks in advance!
George seems like a good dude. Video has good vibes.
Thanks john, i appreciate that buddy
Thank you. I really appreciate your tips. The way you simplify and break the measurements and weights for us beginners are very helpful.
No problem Kevin, glad to help!
Good luck w your project and appreciate you watching:)
I've gotten more out of this video than any of the others. Thanks for making mistakes to save me a lot of steps. Great video. I feel more prepared now. The best part is knowing it's not going to happen at once. Thank you again.
Awesome! glad to help! many years of mistakes packed into this video lol
Appreciate the nice comment sir! thanks for watching
Thanks George, wanted to reiterate some of the comments below, you come across genuine and break things down simply and clearly. Appreciate the vid man!
Thanks bro, after a year im finally starting to feel like myself on camera, so that means alot bud:)
Love it my dude. I have a mini-lawn of about 300 sqft. I tried to level it last year with all-purpose sand. Now I know to use mason sand and to at least mix in some top soil. Thank you very much for the informative video.
Thanks bro 😎
It might be 300sqft but you make sure it’s the best damn 300sqft lawn on the block!
Awesome, glad to hear!
good luck with your project!
Thanks!
No problem peter good luck w your project!
My guy, this was a brilliant demonstration and explanation! I'm going to pass this on to my brother in law who has a terrible issue with ruts.
Thanks kev!
My lawn was sodded 18 months ago and this will be the first growing season I can start top leveling. Glad I saw this video in my feed because you answered most of the questions I had been wondering about. Thanks for sharing your tips..... I can’t wait to get started!
Awesome! Good luck w your project!
Thanks Ken that is awesome feedback, even I have been guilty of adding too much broll 😅
Lately I’ve been working on engineering my video to be more engaging and it seems be working quite well on this video specifically.
This kind of feedback is always appreciated.
Thanks for watching:)
Outstanding video. Straight to the point and very detailed without stupid stories blah blah blah. Good job. Thank you.
appreciate it nitro! good luck with your leveling project!
Hard to argue with that. Great video, George! Killin' it man!
Thanks man! Like wise!
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of information I needed, although I think it may take a few years to level my yard. I’m sure Ill watch this several times.
no problem Jeff, the good news is, the slower you are in the leveling process, the better the results will be. it always better to apply light layers over time than to go all out at once.
Good luck with your project!

What kind of ratio do you recommend when you first start of sand and soil?
@@ernestpmiller 50:50
@Durham Reality my advice is to you... dont ever underestimate some one with a small figure
Or 50/50 wilko hard wearing rye grass with bunker sand. (Not the sand hitler used though ok).
Thanks for the tips on the leveling process. I’m starting on my first season of leveling. Starting out small and working my way up.
No problem Patrick! take your time, no rush.
The cool thing about leveling is that it gets easier and easier every time you do it
Excellent video. We have a lawn that seems more prone to growing cattails than grass. Besides the ruts we have, we have about six areas ranging from 2x3' to 12 x 18 ' that holds water up to almost two weeks after a rain.
Thanks!
Leveling will help with drainage! 👍👍
First time watching one of your video. And kinda had the jiff of a lot of this.. but one thing I didn’t think of 1/2” on grass to level. I always left it taller. Thanks for this video.
No problem boss, thanks for stopping by!
just released a new video on leveling today btw if you wanna check it out
Awesome advice. Never thought about incorporating sand into the mix. I thought that it was dirt only. No wonder my yard is crap...Off to the beach I go!
Thanks! Sand will give you a nice flat finish
I hope you're talking about a beach in some river or other fresh water body!
Sand from the beach (sea) with it's very high salt content, won't be friendly to your lawn, at all! ;-)
BTW it's soil, not dirt.
Otherwise it would pile up quite a lot, which it doesn't. ;-)
@@crpth1 I was being sarcastic. I guess I shouldn’t be because someone might actually get beach sand! Thanks for the info!
I trust this guy , saving this video for when I'm going to tackle my lawn. 😊
That sounds like quite the project! but it sounds like you have a solid plan, the good news is... the more level you get it over time.. the easier it gets:)
And no probem! i always try to help out as much as possible, sometimes it gets overwhelming but thats alright, i enjoy it!
Speaking of your cart. I bought a ground work dump cart
from tractor supply and it is awesome. it will move about 1/2 cubic yard of sand and still be easy to dump if you load it a little rear heavy. the rear wheels roll forward while dumping to ease the process. it comes with a really sturdy handle for pulling by hand and you can pull the pin slide the handle down the shaft and it's ready to hook to your lawn mower
Yup gorilla cart is the same way:)
The days of the wheel barrow are donezo.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I've watched a few on leveling and yours was the most informative. Thanks for making it!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your project!
Holy smokes!!! The amount of material!!! I was not prepared to hear that!!! Wowza!
Thank you so much for the tips on the garden cart and sand size. Adam and I are just about to do our small lawn in our new place in a few months those two tips will save our backs and our mower. Subbed!
No problem!
And sweet! Just returned the favor! Look forward to checking out your content:)
just found this video.... now this guy is a good youtuber, very informative with clear explanations... keep up the good work, new sub :)
Appreciate it!
Thanks for the sub :)
Great video. Before I level, I need to get rid of the moles.
Probably oughtta see a dermatologist for that, but don't let it keep you from showing your face to your neighbors! ;)
Original juicy fruit gum seriously
@@jillbook6469 tell me more! Never heard about that. Between the moles and armadillos my yard is a mess!
I really think they worked.
... blast them
I'm pretty excited to level my lawn. I want the moles to have a nice level surface to dig new tunnels and make nice little hills.
Thanks mat!
You got quite a project ahead of you!
Take your time, youll get better results
Appreciate you stoppin by:)
Thanks for the great info. Leveling my yard for the first time this season and I'm trying to do it right the first time.
Great content George and as always amazing production on the video 👌🏾
Thanks cam! Much appreciated sir!
I love those Hardy gloves! They protect your hands as well as the fancy expensive brands, you can actually feel what you're doing, and you don't feel terrible if they get torn up because they didn't cost a fortune.
Gonna be starting my own lawn business here soon so this definitely helped
Awesome! good luck w your business endeavors!
Excellent job covering all aspects of the lawn leveling process. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Never knew that about the sand that is definitely good to know
Thanks man! Had to learn that one the hard way
Appreciate this info. Please continue to help those of us trying to support our lawns yearly. Thank you.
For those who don't golf: golf course maintenance crews always fill divots with SAND. 100%
Great video!! A couple things to add... 1)great time to also overseed 2) you got to train your lawn before you mow that short
totally agree!
Good luck!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Great idea. I need to watch a couple videos on that to get the best plan ironed out. Thanks much!
This is the best lawn leveling video. And I have watched them all. Awesome work. 👍
Great videos George . I really like the way you explain everything we need to know with no B.S
I'm gonna follow your tips , cool tunes too.

Going back into the archives for your vids George! Planning to level this summer, thanks for your tips.
Great video George. Nice edit.

Awesome, thank you! My goal is to deliver more content then fluff although i occasionally like to have a bit of fun too lol

Where was this video when I was learning how to l level my lawn?!!
Good one George, sky is the limit for channel when you make great quality videos just like this one!

Thanks Al, much appreciated! That means a lot coming from the leveling master🥋
Straight to the point video, thank you for simplifying this. Thanks for the realistic expectations as well, here I am thinking leveling a lawn is gonna happen in a day or 2 🤣
Thanks buddy!
You have really helped me with my next project of leveling my lawn. Thank you. Your video was awesome.
Great content George! I have an area close to the house that has been punished with shallow roots from a river birch tree. Will be trying to build up that 200 sq feet over time since the remainder of the lawn is relatively level.
Thanks jayme! Those darn trees, I’m suffering the same issue right in the middle of my lawn 😒
But I cant get rid of it because it’s the only red tree on the block lol
I totally agree with the 50 50 mix, great point on the products being dry before putting them on your lawn... Great video

George..great video man, I am glad I found your channel.
Really liked how genuine you seem when explaining the do’s and don’t of leveling. Pretty sure I would have mad half those mistakes. I am looking to level part of my lawn this season. I live in Arizona and have Bermuda

New homeowner here. Thanks for the video I'm sure we would have made all these mistakes and then some.
Lol, real talk.. I don’t even have a lawn. I thought this was a Paul Wall video. Lmao. However, I learned a lot, and now I wish I did live in a place with a lawn! #ThanksGeorge
What it do baby, its the iceman paul wall 🧊
no problem dude! good luck w your future home goals!
