- Here is another episode in the 5000 subscribers Seiko 6309 Giveaway series. In this video I remove the old lume from the hands and apply new lume. I show each step of this and the products I use. I then set the hands onto the watch and demonstrate how this is done so the day / date changes over at 12. Does anyone out there know of the infamous Timex girls of the 60,s? They painted radium onto the hands and dials with a fine brush they kept pointed with their lips. Their teeth and lips literally glowed in the dark but many succomb to ingested material.Sad but true! Cheers.
Glenn Powell I do , was not just Timex but most brands that used Rodium

I had a Smiths travel clock as a kid and no matter what the time at night I could read it.Having said that,there is a deHavilland Commet at Cosford air museum that had to be delumed on its flight panel because it was so high in radiation still! Nice lume job Mike, great tip with the clear lid to see the underside. The tiny imperfection on the minute hand lume, would that caused by an air bubble I wonder, just wondering if the lume mix shrinks a bit when drying out. Congrats on the sub count....you deserve it, hopefully be at the 10K by the end of the year :-)
My Mate VINCE hey Vince nice to see you over here. So you eagle eyed fella spotted the spot. To be honest not sure what caused it but air is a likely candidate or some form of contamination . Don’t forget I dropped the clear lid twice!
As you know it’s always different filming to just doing stuff without the camera pressure . I like to think I am more clinical off camera. Hope you enjoyed it
@@MyRetroWatches I did enjoy Mike, very much. The dropping the lid and landing on the freshly lumed hands side was a good Vince move haha :-) Everything is much easier off camera, not only are you trying to do the work in camera shot but also trying not to fluff your words. It looks easy but it really isn't. This watch is really starting to take shape and the lumed hands look good. looking forward to seeing the finished result :-)
Really good stuff. I've followed these 6309 videos from start to finish as a tutorial and used the step by step, so brilliantly explained, to disassemble my 6309 clean, oil and reassemble and it is now on my wrist and working. Compelling stuff and such an enjoyable and satisfying thing to do.
I'm hooked now.

Many thanks for the Cousins link. I would like to replace the crystal on my Seiko 6309 7029A with sapphire, and also replace all the watches gaskets inc stem for new ones. Could you ever do a feature showing how to do this???atb snack.
I use these white plastic toothpicks to apply lume. One end has little spikes to clean between ur teeth. But the other end has a nice angle down to a point and I have used them for custom bezel work and they are awesome. Got the box in hand. CVS Health brush toothpick. They come in a clear container that has a dispenser. I have used them for hands also. Just turn them on the thin little edge and it spreads the lume evenly. If you happen to run across them get a box will last a long time and is good for other things since it’s so soft. I haven’t scratched anything with them. Also u can wipe it off and drop it back n the box. Great video as always. I plan on trying my hand at a tear down and rebuild of a Mumbai special tomorrow. Wish me luck.

A fibre pen such as the ones used in electronics to clean pcb boards would well in this application too I beleive. Been really enjoying your productions since being referred here by Vince, keep up the good work!
This rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F281135398404 is what I use. I apply with a scalpel edge and gently run it down the hand with gentle pressure. As it begins to go off a run the clean edge of the scalpel blade down again to take off any extraneous like off the sides. You do it again as it shrinks down when dried. It is VERY bright and I also use it on my rifle sights and my fishing floats. It goes a long, long way. We use the same supplier.
i have a 70s seiko 7009 which i have been trying to service and i cant get it going could i send it to you to have a look at if only to see where i was going wrong if it is broken i would be happy to let you keep it for spares thanks

Thanks Mike I have met many great people on joining Retro Watches. About Lume What's the best to use. And the radio active part of old Lume has killed many.
Its radium lume that is radioactive and will only be potentially harmful if swallowed. This was on old watches pre 60s mainly I believe as it was banned for the heath reasons. It is not all that difficult to spot once you have seen it once. To my knowledge Seiko never used it and certainly not in the 70s which is when this watch was from so its totally safe to scratch off and relume.

Thank you Andy. Luming indices as a tricky task and I have only done it on a few watches where the lume is a round blob or nice and flat on a pad / indices. The hard part really is removing the old lume. New lume as long is its the right consistency should be fairly easy to apply. Good magnification is required.

ive never been much of a watch guy myself but I have really started enjoying watching these repair videos. they are so satisfying! always envious of the dexterity required to work on these tiny parts. would love to get myself one of these seikos! they mean a lot more to me now that Im learning about the engineering behind them.

I'm wanting to learn this so I can service a 1960s Certina my grandfather got for his 50th birthday in 1963.
Unfortunately the lugs are almost worn all the way through and I'm not having any luck finding a donor watch.
Yankin' it with shootie donors can be hard to find sometimes. I have waited 6+ months before . Set world Ebay searches with daily email notifications
I have been going on ebay frequently but so far no luck.

Easiest way to get rid of old lume: An ultrasonic bath removes it instantly without any trace left.

Great video - what a result. Looks fantastic, can't wait to see the finished product. The dial looks as good as I hoped when I saw your first video about it - that kind of chapter ring is the thing that makes the Seiko 5 range so unique for a relatively budget watch - they really punch above their weight in the looks department. Lume shot was great!
Ian Mansfield thank you so much Ian. Seikos sometimes don’t get the credit they deserve. Look at this one, 40+ years old and with all the punishment it’s had it still runs spot on .
Subscribed! I got this itch now, got to take a watch apart. I build models, so I have the patience, just not all of the tools required or the knowledge how the movement works.
I think I'll start with a chinese automatic that I got some time ago before tackling one of my Seikos :)
MasterBata thanks for your subscription . If you do models you will find the transition easier. You don’t need much to start. Good magnification, a movement holder and some drivers and tweezers .

STLND_Thomas_ luming is a fairly easy task . The consistency of the lume is vital and then spreading a very thin layer. Too much and when you install the hands the can touch..

I can recommend Lidl's Parkside cordless rotary tool set, I paid something like 20 quid and its been an absolute trooper and comes with a set of oversize collets so you can use other thicker shafted bits. Mine is still running on power I put in about a year ago and has only just gone to amber. Another cheap but immensely reliable tool is Parkside's grinder/belt sander hybrid, I converted it to take twist on wheels and I have polishing wheels, brass brush wheels, grinding stones and it uses easy to find standard belts and it is solid as heck, the polishing wheels make for effortless polishing to a beautiful clean shine even stainless steel soon gleams like chrome :) Proxxon stuff is apparently very good and the accessory range for say the rotary tool is mind boggling, I have promised myself one and a drill press device as and when the Parkside stuff does die.
Hi Ian, my bench grinder / polisher is Parkside. came with a taper spindle so I can use 2-3" cotton wheels. with polishing you want the best polish you can get and in the next video I wil l be showing all of this. Thanks for watching.
@@MyRetroWatches I got a baggie of Silvercrest soap bars a while back with pale blue, red, green, white and black and amazing stuff, haven't bothered with the white or the black and use the green with steels, the red with brasses and coppers and the pale blue seems to work quite well on aluminium, have no clue what the white and black were intended for hehe :)
@@MyRetroWatches I love the absolute mastery of putting that second hand on btw, second hands are my nemesis or rather second hands onto Miyota 2115 quartz movements are my nemesis as I just can't get them to engage and they always end up like curlywurly's and I just close the whole thing up without the second hand lol Four of my Sekonda's are all sans second hands which I kapton taped to the inside caseback so I don't lose 'em.
