  • Let’s re-lume a set of hands and a sandwich dial so that it’s brighter than a Seiko Prospex diver! In this video, we’ll outline every step involved in the luming process, from getting the ingredients required, to how to prepare the lume compound, and finally to the proper application of the lume compound onto the hands and dials.
    We are using our DIY Watch Club Lume Kit with the bulk of the tutorial, but we also used the Bergeon 5680 Luminous Compound Kit to compare their performance. Stay till the end to see how they fare against our kit!

    From experience in a lab making very small batch bioplastics: DO NOT ADD THE LUME POWDER DIRECTLY TO THE CRUCIBLE. Weigh the lume on a square of wax paper with a single crease in the middle. You will need to tare the scale for the paper. You will weigh lume and binder separately this way, and tare the crucible with compound when adding the thinner with a syringe. This is much more precise, and prevents accidentally adding too much lume to the crucible, which is a one way trip.

    Great vid as always. I've already tried luming before but the kit I have has no thinner. To get the right consistency I could not add as much lume powder as I wished. So I learnt something new today. I look forward to you releasing the kit and more excellent video's.

    • @DIYWatchClub

      Thinner is difficult to ship due to regulations, so it's no surprise it's not included in a kit. Fortunately thinner is quite readily available locally so you can get your own thinner to go with the kit. Thank you for your comment!

    Thank you for the video, recently I've changed hands on my Seiko SKX 007, for original seiko SNZ hands (sword shape) which I really like, but SNZ hands have definitely less brightness and lasting than original skx hands and existing dial. I would like to swap lume on SNZ hands for better lume ability. Do you think the lume which is in the kit can compete with seiko diver watch lume with brightness and long lasting?
    P. S. BTW Big thank you for your hands installation video, that really helped me with my first mod!

      @@DIYWatchClub Thank you for your fast reply, I agree It is definitely brighter! There is no questions about it. But how long it will last? Mido Ocean GMT also has a very bright lume right after charging, but it fades quickly comparing to Seiko Lumibright formula. You can read time on your SKX or Monster in your case, even 5-7 hours later when you wake up at night. Would be awesome if you Timelapse them both for at least 30 minutes.

    nicely shot and explained video, liked! Is BGW9 is brighter than C3? Also the saying "we've put 15 layers of lume" is a bull$hit then? )

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah BGW9 is plenty bright, but on an absolute term, C3 is still brighter. And the "15 layers of lume" is the result of industrial method of lume application. Each layer is significantly thinner than the one you see in the video. So, not exactly bullshit but it isn't as think as it sounds.

  • @ccooper8785

    The modern lumes are amazing. I recently bought the world's most inaccurate Addiesdive AD2112 which has BGW9 lume. This lume is fantastic and is visable overnight when it is activated using a UV torch.
    Unfortunately the Seiko (clone?) NH38 movement is not just inaccurate but the inaccuracy is VERY inconsistent. This makes the watch unusable as a reliable timepiece. If I had the equipment, knowledge and skill (0 out of 3 for me) I would try replacing the auto movement with a quartz.

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the lumes we have now are way more advanced than what we have a few decades ago.
      Rather than replacing the movement with a quartz one, you can try to regulate the movement. It's not really hard and we have a guide on it: th-cam.com/video/vz_1rhl1lvY/w-d-xo.html

    Is your lume safe? I ve heard all brightest lumes are a lil bit radioactive ☢️

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not. In fact most of the brightest lumes on the market are not radioactive. The radioactive kind that is used now is called tritium, and it is not nearly as bright as the strontium aluminate-based luminous pigment (this kind is usually referred to as Superluminova), which is the type of the lume used here.

    • @PickAnyNameButMine
      @PickAnyNameButMine 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DIYWatchClubTritium may not be as bright as lume initially, but after 30 minutes max, the lume will have faded and not be anywhere near as bright as tritium. Tritium stays at a constant brightness, and stays as bright throughout the night and it is far easier to read a few hours later when lume has faded. Tritium does get less bright as the years go by, but they will last 15 to 20 years, and cannot cause you any harm even if the tubes break. Having said that, I still love using my lumed watches throughout the night, but tritium is definitely better overall than lume, especially the T100 tritium tubes.

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PickAnyNameButMine Please don't take my previous comment as a slight to tritium. In fact tritium is awesome for the reasons you stated and we love it! One thing I would add though, is that when tritium inevitably gets dimmer in 10 years or so, it will be next to impossible to replace it easily yourself. In contrast, luming, though still quite difficult, is something that a DIYer can do on his own.

    • @PickAnyNameButMine
      @PickAnyNameButMine 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DIYWatchClub Hi DIY Watch Club, I didn’t take your comment as a slight to tritium, I was just putting my experience with my tritium watches compared to lumed watches, and I still enjoy my lumed watches. I agree that T25 GTLS tubes do get dimmer and may need replacing after 10 years or so, but in my experience T100 GTLS tubes will last 15 years because they are far brighter. Of course that will depend on how old the watches were when first purchased, and also the eyesight of the person that uses them.

    Doesn't look that great in the daytime ... I can see that it's difficult to get it just right when working from the backside, but those shots at the end show that the end result is more suitable for people who prefer looking at their watch in the dark
