The way I see it, Dead Island 2 is simply a fun game that focused on parts of the experience that I care about the most in my zombie games. I like good story too, but there are different zombie games that focus more on that. Each game has its place.
It's gotta be about almost 10 years when I first watched this channel. Damn time flies by. Great content throughout all the drama and all the hardships you guys made it.

Joe always stayed true to the core of what his channel was about. Sometimes you have to acknowledge stuff going on in the world, but if you keep it about the games you pretty much shut down all the nonsense, and when the crowd that wanted all that negativity saw they weren't going to get it they moved on.

True; it's all about evolving in order to stay relevant. You look at his content from those previous eras and it just doesn't hold up, so if he stayed to that format and style, he would have faded into obscurity by now. I think having his friends, such as Other Joe, made his content way more entertaining as some of their skits are better than the actual gameplay.

The first game was really its own experience. I recently replayed it and got easily sucked into it's world from the story, the characters, the physics, the music, the atmosphere, etc. I guess I've just been deprived of a good zombie experience lately that feels like I'm there, feeling all the trauma and anxiety that comes with the post-apocalyptic experience. I have yet to play this sequel, but it already feels like I'm going to miss out on that intense level of immersion of the first game which is just really sad to say because I'm enjoying this gorey combat after watching Joe.
while i will say dead island is still better than its counterpart i will tell u to give 2 a try. i think u could still have lots of fun and hell build ur own opinion off of it. its gore system is a must play the guns are amazing and the atmosphere is still there in my opinion.
It was a weird vibe...but a vibe none-the-less...all the tropical scenery with the dark and depressing atmosphere...then it just kind of ends with everyone dead but the immune survivors...
I think it turned out that way from Techland wanting a serious zombie game, but Deep Silver turning it down, creating this weird equilibrium of serious story with goofy combat. Going full goofy was alright but I miss the old atmosphere.

@@grimoireweiss5203 I mean on a technical level I think this game is fairly impressive considering the dev hell it went through and the fact that it still launched way more smoothly than a number of other recent, AAA games. The performance, graphics, many of the animations, the entire gore system are all high quality and a cut above many other games.
I love the game! On my 3rd play-through (Carla, Amy, and now Jacob)
But I don't understand Joe's argument. He wants missions that support the gore system... What better missions to support that than zombie killing missions??
What I personally LOVED about the missions was that there are NO escort missions. Never having to wait for a dumb NPC who might get stuck or die because they're weak.
The reason why I really liked this game is that after playing it for two hours I activated cheats for infinite money and ammo. When you get a fire revolver the game gets sooo goood. I would give it 7 or 8. This game shows that you don’t need huge open world, extremely intricate story or procedural generation to make a fun game. I would play any game with gore like this one has
so you enjoy slop. that’s fine but don’t say it’s “good”. you literally said you had to hack it to have fun. You paid for it so all the more power to you to do whatever you see fit with the game YOU bought, but that doesn’t make it even remotely close to a halfway decent game

So true for me, zombie games reviews coming from Joe always felt nostalgic.
I had no idea about any of these issues because my friend and I had a glitchless, crashless (almost, he crashed once), and amazing experience.
We also played the game together the entire time, and never played without each other for it too.
And personally, I loved those "Kill 'em all" parts because when playing a zombie game, all I want to do is kill zombies in as many ways as possible. Going into each of those zones with a more honed, and better style of gameplay that I'm working myself into. Bringing out the auto-critter 9000 (Any AR) on the bosses to just mow through them, feeling like I'm actually super-human and immune to the prion diesease. (Is it still considered a prion disease? Or is it a Virus because it's combined with HIV to a degree?)
I just really wished there was a new game plus, a hard mode, or ways to just fight absolute hordes of zombie after finishing the game.
Really liked the comedy in it too just beause it was just not normal, and wild.
There are over a million zombies in L.A, and one of your big complaints is the "kill 'em all" tropes? I'm surprised we aren't fighting more, the game really could have benefited MORE from zombies just trying to overrun where you are.
Zombies never felt like damage sponges, I think I might actually have to go and watch your stream because the entire game I felt op as shit.

Yeah Joe's argument of "I want to have missions that support the 'flesh' gore system but all those 'kill em all' missions is not what I want" was very very strange....
I too had a bugless and crashless game (played on Xbox One X) and am on my 3rd solo play-through now and not once have I felt that it was too difficult. Challenging yes, especially on my 2nd run playing as Amy, had to get used to not being able to take as many hits because my 1st run was with Carla.
But what I loved the most about the game's missions were that there are NO escort missions.
I was pretty happy with it and I think his scoring was pretty fair especially considering it was higher than DL2. I had a bugless run on XBONE and I'm pretty satisfied with how stable it was on release since that's rare these days.
Yea I didn’t have many issues, I could turn it on and jump in to an online co op game with randomers in a couple of minutes.
Had loads of fun with it, but I also would have liked some more content or a reason to play through it multiple times.
I also honestly didn’t even notice the Kill em all thing as I expected a-lot of zombie killing and who doesn’t like killing hordes of zombies with multiple weapons and friends!
If i could say one thing i wish Dead Island 2 would tweak is the Throwing Mechanics on the weapons and the Ragdoll Features on Zombies when hit by them.
I wish you could charge up your Weapon throw so that you have your basic throw that will stay embedded in the Zombie Flesh,and then a harder charged Throw that will Decapitate or Instakill with a headshot with Knives and Bladed weapons or Spear like Weapons or launch them a few feet like the Drop kick does when you used Clubs,Hammers and Heavier weapons.
I just want to say, Alex is my favorite when it comes to the skits. Not saying Joe and OJ are bad, just that Alex has the realistic reaction to whats happening 😂

Truly the times have not changed.
I just wish all the fight animations were better. Like every swing feels so weak, slow and clunky. I just wish it was smoother and quicker so all the combat could flow better. Like, imagine a fps zombie game with fast-paced sifu like combat.

I loved Dead Island 2. I know it sounds cliché, but it was the most mindless fun I've had in a long time. Yes, the story wasn't great, but it was so much fun to mess up zombies with that insanely awesome Flesh system. Compared to Redfall, which made me yawn every time I played it, Dead Island 2 is such a fun romp that honestly never got boring for me.
Mindless fun describes it perfectly. As fun as it is mindless.
What would be the solution to the drop in co-op? I recall Borderlands having a similar issue, because the quests were in chains, if one player didn't have the previous quests completed the party couldn't do the quest.
The fact that the game went through developer hell and still came out as "Okay" is a massive achievement. I hope they build upon what they learnt with this game and continue making bangers.
meh... it looks like they pretty much got the game done in 2014 and just didnt have time to add anything other than the "kill all enemies" missions. then they spent the next 9 years just upgrading the graphics cycle after cycle.
duke nukem forever started as a ps1 game so their world was completely different

It's genuinely a miracle this game is as good as it is. Most games in development hell aren't as lucky. You can tell the developers really cared about this game and wanted to deliver
Even watching the review, you can see SO much of the gameplay and animations and assets are literally copy pasted from dying light because it started as a Techland game. Which is just a straight up no for me because it's too much like dying light while lacking what makes dying light good. The parkour. Certainly you could say dying light is like dead island because dead island 1 came out before dying light 1 but DL is just the far superior game and there's literally no reason to play dead island while any dying light game exists anywhere. Just not gonna buy this and probably won't even play it once it's offered on PS plus or any other platform subscription. It's just not interesting enough.

I cant lie, the environment in this game is amazing. The houses look furbished af, and thats alot of detail. I do wish the story had that much effort and the combat was speed up a bit.
Don't forget the zombies are outfitted to zone which I found to be really nice to see

It feels like a very big intro. You see the last cutscene and thinks yeah ok lets go but instead you see the credits.
I really miss these reviews more frequently. But a lot of time and dedication goes it to these. So thank you AJ and crew for what you do.
Honetly I think he should go back to more frequent reviews, and let OJ and Alex handle the news stuff. Hell, Alex alone carries that, since he's the main talker always. But AJ needs to focus on reviews like he used too, since so many games I'm sure he would've normally reviewed got missed.
honestly, DI2 is everything it needed to be, a fun game to kill zombies in, but in a lot of other places, it really does feel like a tech demo of what Dead Island as a series could explore and perfect
Zones are shit graphic wise included rather open world with graphics close or a level below the current zone graphics even though it seems like they tried uping the graphics for the zone to zone the beach in my opinion had lower end graphics compared to the first few zones as soon as you get to the beach you notice the drop in graphics the buildings have good graphics but the beach and grass are dog shit the characters are decent with individual personalities and strengths/weaknesses
Consider theres 3 of same genre its not worth picking it full price hell first di is cheaper and works better

The thing about this game, it was never meant to be a deep story driven game. It did exactly what it set out to do. A dumb minded game where I don’t have to think and just run around killing zombies.
Not every game has to have a deep story line, open world and extensive story line. Sometimes I just want a dumb fun game. This is that.
A game I can pick up at any time and enjoy running around killing zombies.
15 YEAR OF ANGRY REVIEWS - Nostalgia just hit hard.
I felt like that they made the zombies more spongey to show off their Flesh system. Ultimately I believe the game itself is a good foundation, they just need that better story and a faster time to kill on zombies for me at least. I also hated that I couldn't complete areas because I had to unlock a certain zombie type and that made me not want to explore anything which was also a bummer on that.
By late game you're 1 shotting almost every zombie barring the special infected, I think that sense of progression is fine and nothing feels spongey.
The zombies are hardly spongy at all I never throughout any point had any trouble dealing with the normal zombies and would finish them in like 3 hits by the end of the game I practically 1 shot most normal zombies and even apex variants of I get a stun or deplete their stamina can two shot them with a demolition shotgun or heavy revolver. Or just hit them with weapons. Out of all the things people can complain about the spongienss of the zombies is the only one that makes me curious on how exactly these people were playing the game.
Dead Island 2 is not exactly on my must play list but always appreciate Joe making these reviews, always hugely entertaining. I cannot wait to see the Redfall Angry Review, that one's gonna be a doozy.

There was an update on PC for Dead Island 2. I started noticing terrible pop in of the enemies after that. Like, they were hitting me and I could hear them, but they hadn't spawned in, yet. Also, the weapon degradation seemed to be non-existent in the end. Took away some of the fun I was having in an already mediocre experience. Anyone else experienced this? I can't find anything about it.
I remember getting the original Dead Island on launch day in 2011! A friend and I had to go to multiple stores cause it was selling out everywhere!
I’m having a lot of fun with Dead Island 2, despite all its flaws. Combat is definitely improved from the first game. Zombies have more variety, weapons are crazier than they were on Banoi, and though the repetitive Kill Them All missions can be a bit much, I like to think that it adds to the idea of Hell-A being completely overrun with no chance of getting out alive.
One of my only criticisms is something about combat. See, the game gives each character you can play as a certain counter for attacks. I played as Ryan, and once I figured out that you can just parry/block attacks at the last second to stun zombies into damaging counter attacks that use up no weapon durability at all, most encounters just became less scary because most weapons (especially in the beginning,) have pitiful durability until you find a workbench. If you’re good enough at it, you can gain much more experience from slaying zombies several levels higher than yours. That may not sound too bad, but zombies don’t damage you when this happens, they only swarm around you. I’m honestly not sure if this makes the game more fun or if it makes it too easy. What do you think?

Wow, I thought a 6/10 was pretty generous for what you said & showed during the review. I was thinking 4/10 the whole time, until you highlighted a few positive things near the end and thought 5/10.
My niece saw the Dying Light review when Other Joe said, Hey Joe, you want to play a Zombie Game. And every time she visits me or when I visit her she tells me, “Hey David, you want to play a Zombie Game!? It never gets old.
Not gonna lie. If other Joe showed up to my house asking if wanted to play another zombie game… I would end up playing it too!
Given the only real issue is slightly repetitive mission design, a 6 is incredibly harsh.
Curious though, any solo players here actually have any issues with difficulty?
It's one thing I've noticed about recent releases. Either joining with friends comes with some awful restrictions or the game doesn't have the network fixed until several months after release. This only hurts the games sales and notoriety.
I'm having a great time with this one. It's pretty much exactly what I expected a modern Dead Island game to be; it looks great, runs well (it will crash every so often, but frames wise it ran flawlessly), and I'm having fun for the most part. A lot of the characters were annoying like Joe mentioned, but I think they fit perfectly in the over-the-top LA parody that the game was going for. The physics on the zombie bodies and the way they react so accurately to what you do to them (they will cut in half or explode into pieces at the actual location you hit them with your weapon instead of just lazily falling apart in a scripted way) is impressive, gross, and makes killing zombies very satisfying. I do have to agree that many segments were tedious and drawn out, but I think the rage mechanic is a decent answer to that problem. You can tear through a ton of enemies fast in rage mode. If not for the rage mechanic, some zombie killing segments would have taken forever. Breaks were a necessary part of playing the game for me. It got old after 3-4 hours but felt fresh later or the next day.
Also worth noting, I played this entirely alone. My friends weren't interested in picking it up, so I've been playing it when we aren't playing something else. I wasn't aware of the coop issues and that is very unfortunate for a lot of players.

This game fun for few hours but turns into generic gameplay slog where nothing feels different after that. I beat all the side quests, max level and beat the story which nothing feels compelling to continue through and had to force myself to complete. While the enemies have the cool gore system essentially bulletsponges and no matter what skills you get your not making the difference. So I totally agree with this score.
The first dead island is way superior game, with actually begin on an island, you could drive vehicles, you actually feel like your moving to new locations, you had awesome brutal skills that actually make your choice mean something and enemies weren’t respawning bullet sponges.
I do give props they actually got this game out of development hell.
6/10 is fair I'd say I thought the same but I'm playing solo surprised you didn't bump it up for co op but yeah it's a bit shallow I'm sure if I slogged to completion I'd drop my score but for now just jumping into for a couple hours to just brain-dead slash up some zombies is pretty decent.

Love this game. It doesn't re-invent the wheel but it got a lot right. Game is graphically amazing as well. Looking forward to something like this with a bigger sandbox to play around in.
Biggest thing that pissed me off was how you could get all ability cards but they didn't think to put fire electric or toxic proof in the game because in the middle of fighting zombs I would die because of environmental factors that'd piss me off especially when I had the upper hand

I feel that this verdict reflects the typical quality of modern Zombie games in general.
And people say delay it the more time the better, wait oh no it feels rushed. I mean like wth, just because games is out early doesn't mean it is rushed. It's not about the time it's about consistency of work putted into it.
Yea, for it's sub-genre for me 6-7 is fine.
Honestly, Joe is biased towards zombie games. Had Dead Rising been released today, he'd give it a 6/10.
I love the game! On my 3rd play-through (Carla, Amy, and now Jacob)
But I don't understand Joe's argument. He wants missions that support the gore system... What better missions to support that than zombie killing missions??
What I personally LOVED about the missions was that there are NO escort missions. Never having to wait for a dumb NPC who might get stuck or die because they're weak.
Also loved the ending. Can't wait to see what the DLC/a sequel is going to be like with all that foreshadowing on the walls of the sewers....
What I love about Joe's content, is that its not so over produced. Feels so nice to watch.
I really enjoyed dead island 2. I've finished it twice thus far. Update: im still playing this game 9 months on. Sending zombies flying with a massive battle hammer never gets old

I'm still waiting for a zombie game that doesn't fixate too much on "special or mutated infected" and survival, but is still fun and challenging enough to keep people playing that also takes place in a big city.

Maybe it's because I bought it 4 months later, but I found Solo to be balanced except for Butchers who will absolutely wreck you. I like the health gain system, however, sometimes I found myself losing more than I could get back. Countering was a bit inconsistent. I wish the inventory system was done better. I always had enough money to do what I wanted without having to sell weapons. I do appreciate the unclaimed loot menu. So many times in these games you're forced to give up something you want to keep.
It would have been great if Sam B. gave us a 3rd one hit wonder! Sam B. overall was disappointing. He didn't do a thing and didn't look or feel like the same character.

most crashes are caused by AMD FSR. after i disabled that ive only had 1 crash not related to that issue
From what I read, and have experienced, you cant join into the future, but you CAN join into the past. Meaning if they are where you are or before you are in the story then you can join them, but if they are in a later part of the game than you, you cannot. You could play with Alex, he just had to host and you guys would have to replay parts.
I also just enjoyed Jacob the most for dialog. He's got a pretty believable mix of comedy and seriousness and has the most variation in what he says compared to the others. The trade off is some of his dialog doesn't fit some NPC conversations.
I was confused about hype for this game cuz how my memory went,
The studio that made deadisland 1 couldn’t do it how they wanted to because of higher up, so the game we got was deadisland, then they would go on to make the game they really wanted to make, which was dying light.
So the actual IP of dead island was pretty much a game concept by a studio that was warped then by publishers into a game they weren’t proud of.
So in my head, we never needed a dead island 2, because dead Island was t the game the devs wanted to make, it was dying light.
So who cares about reviving some chimera corpse

Absolutely, I even bought it as the pc-port released and replayed the whole thing and almost 100%-ed it. THeres a really wellmade cliffhanger ending for a sequel as well... too bad that didnt work out.
Everyone has their own experience. I personally found days gone to be boring and uninspired.
Loved the open world, motorcycle, giant zombie hoards (when they worked). The rest was crap to me.
Maybe I need to give it another go now that's its had some patches

When I was watching the review, the Alexa in my room answered when Joe asked for a workbench and told me in was 70 something miles away. I've never played the game. LOL

my friends and I were at different parts of the main story and we went into a single lobby and had no issues?
only thing that I noticed was that if we moved past my story part, it wouldnt continue my main story line.

Question to everyone Betwen 18:18-18:21 and 22:39-22:43 above 480p video freezes despite no problem with holding 1080p and 4k before and after. It occurs also during other videos i wach, again only in short segments. Anyone had same problem? It begun to happen 13-05-2023
