Wow thank you. I had this amp for about 3 months and never messed with the masters like this. The above 50% on the master volume really makes the tubes sing too. I was using OD1 but now using crunch because it’s too much.
Most of the forum posts say that the tone is generated mostly in the preamp tubes not the power amp tubes for the dsl. So you want to crank the channel volume to get the tube tones, but use the master volume as an attenuator

The DSL 40 Is a superb amp. I mostly run a clean Chanel the 20 watt Chanel for practise then run the 40 watt on stage ., this gives huge depth and impact. I run an ibanez tube screamer and maybe my Boss ds1 but on lower settings . This amp takes a bit of time to understand but well worth the effort. I like the speaker that comes with this amp. You can squash down the highs with a pinch more fat tone and all is well. The reminder for everyone is that the 40 watt is as crazy as a 100 watt amp. And you can seriously rattle people. Be Aware that this is a serious pro amp and learn it's features . For most venues you don't need pedals. It has way more going for it than all early 70s amps . The price point is perfect . The optional amp selector chanel pedal is a great tool. Iam going to buy a 2x12 speaker cabinet and run 40 watts. This offers huge wallop and turned down a bit this amp comes fully alive . Warning ; let your amp warm up for atleast 10 minutes before cranking volume leave on toggle in on. And wattage selector toggle on off mode until you are ready. Especially during a break. Tube life will be good.

Hey, Tommy. Long time since talking with ya. Hope you're well. Hey, this new tutorial is excellent, but I 'm wondering if you still have your initial one still up anywhere. It's a long story and a bit convoluted to explain, but I'd like to see it once again ... if indeed you didn't delete it completely. Chances are, you possibly did. The primary thing I wanted to re-examine how you initially manipulated the clean/crunch volumes to achieve a more balanced (though not fully) unity volume between the two. I don't plan on buying a clean boost in the near future, so I was hoping to re-visit your old way of manipulating the volumes to achieve a better balance, thereby reducing the dramatic difference in volume. What you were doing wasn't perfect, and I know you changed your sentiments about it, but it did accomplish the mission pretty well, given the available resources. At any rate, hope to hear back from ya soon, brother.

Just got through watching the total solar eclipse because I am in Dallas, Fort Worth. It was amazing. I will look to see if I made a first video of the change but I believe that the one that's up is the only I made.
id recommend cranking the volumes on each channel to about 5-6 or 7 and then use the MASTER volumes for how loud you want it. This way you're pumping the pre-amps and getting the right amount of saturation out of them. Doing it the other way makes no sense to me...although I will try it tomorrow!

I plan on getting this amp soon and it will be my first actual tube amp so things like efx loops will actually be important to me. Up to this point, I have just had to make sure my pedal chain was in the right order into the input of a solid state amp.

That's real important what effects and the order they go in the effects loop. I am constantly changing pedals, I have an analog chorus with true bypass coming today although chorus is the effect I use the least, hardly at all but when I do use it I want that analog sound. I also have a clean boost coming in tomorrow also with true bypass although I already told you that when I replied to you last time. If you ever have any doubt about something like where pedals go or anything, just ask and if I can help that's cool. All my chords are short so I can get away with having most of my pedals with true bypass to keep the integrity of my sound and I only bought the clean boost to find out where it sounds best and put out a video on it otherwise I would have never have bought it since I only record in the studio with this amp. I want to make sure any info I put out there is correct, but I am 99% sure I also mentioned that to you also. Have a good one my friend.
@@thomasbowlin6787 I appreciate you being so earnest in your approach. As far as my EQ, I don't care so much about a clean boost, but just being able to shape my sound. I guess trying it out in the front and loop and seeing which works. Right now, I have the amp EQ, Metal Zone distortion pedal EQ, and an EQ pedal with each giving something a little different. The EQ pedal is fairly scooped and I put some mid's in with the amp and distortion to give some mid substance that way. Scooped, but not fully scooped. I know a tube amp will need a learning curve from me. I know that amp is capable of really pushing out some gain that sounds "organic" and not so processed. I've seen some use the Metal Zone pedal instead of an overdrive, but just put the pedal's gain to 0. I am curious to what sounds I will get from it. I will get an overdrive pedal as well. I know I will need a good attenuator as well. I am looking forward to learning about this.
@@jeremymiller6933 you might want to read about a pedal Marshall makes. It's call the governor. There hard to get at the moment. I am waiting for Sweetwater music to get them back in but that won't be until September. That pedal into a Marshall amp sounds sweet plus it has its own EQ but then again I am always looking for that classic rock sound. Sometimes with pedals and EQ'S less is more. The more pedals you use the more you have the possibility of what they call tone suck. That's how it can be with tube amps because you want to get the core of your sound from pushing the tubes, much different than transistor amps.
@@jeremymiller6933 read up on line about tone suck or pedals they call tone suckered, they literally suck your tone and that's when you need buffers, a good buffer that will bring the tone back. With tube amps it's a totally different world than using transistor or modeling amps. Just trying to give you some bread crumbs to follow the trail into the world of tube amps. Look it up and see what other players say about certain pedals sucking your tone and how they take care of it. Here is how you really tell if something is sucking up tone. With a tube amp start out with no pedals. Add one pedal at a time until you start to here your tone from a tube amp starting to change in way where it changes your core sound you get from your tube amps with no pedals. Now I am not saying don't use alot of pedals I am just stressing that to many pedals with tube amps can shape your sound for the better or the opposite. Hope this helps
Iam 72 yrs old , have enjoyed several amplifiers. My early fender super reverb 4x10s was something I should of kept, but the 40 dsl beats down that easily. The memory feature of the DSL 40 is a good tool and the reason why the crunch lead position is louder is no mistake you need this volume . Your rhythm guitarist knows what's going on and will have this covered as will your bass player. You don't worry about over thinking this amp , I would definitely stay tuned to this station for extra skills in working the DSL40
wow - way too complicated for this old dog . . I would have been very disappointed if I bought this thinking master vol. 1 was for channel 1 and master vol.2 was for channel 2. . . . .this was just the informational video I was looking for . . . thanks for this video

They made this way to complicated, took me a long time to learn how to use this amp so that's why I made this video, I figured if I was having a problem with this, a guy who has been using Marshall amps for atleast 40 years, then others might to. I just bought the DSL20CR. 2 reasons, 1 much easier to use, they don't have the 2 master volumes, just independent volumes for the two channels, one voicing for each channel. Classic gain and ultra gain with an effects loop. The greatest advantage for this guy who is no longer a spring chicken is the size and weight. Much smaller so you sacrifice some sound and the speaker isn't great either but for an open jam or a band that plays small places it's perfect for me and a lot more straight forward amp with little to no learning curve. I have had it breaking my back hauling the 40CR around plus yes they made the thing way to complicated and if you do have a big venue then just mic it, the 20CR still sounds great, it's a DSL and very convenient and it still sounds like a Marshall with a nice clean channel.

Great video! Great amp. I would like to see independent EQ’s for each channel. I noticed a huge sound and volume difference between channels. This can be frustrating if you’re switching tones during a song. Example: switch for more volume for solos. Cheers and happy rocking!
Absolutely that what drives me crazy about this amp. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. If I am not mistaken, which I might be, don't they make a English made version that is a lot of money that have independent eq's for each channel although I don't know how many channels the amp has, I know atleast 2 but man is there a lot of knobs on that amp. Great Video. BTW, those white spaces on the footswitch are for where to label the switches. You can use a sharpie, or tape. Looks tonnes near putting them in there than a huge strip of masking tape at the bottom! (I have carefully cut white post labels in those places with the settings on)

I traded it a couple of years ago because I didn't have the patience or knowledge to get what I wanted out of it . Well , I guess you just changed that . I do believe the guitar player from years ago who pissed off sound guys really bad had to have been Randy Rhoads before he played with Ozzy. He played so loud, some clubs shut him down. lol

I'm just going by all the articles I've read through the years and the Guitar Gear I know he used . If this was a competition you'd have it hands down cuz most of the Bands I've seen were at a medium sized Club in Syracuse New York called Lost Horizon . Sometimes it got a bit loud with Bands like Cinderella , Britny Fox , Stryper , WASP , Bands like that . The last real concert I went to was at the War Memorial to see KISS for their Creatures Tour . Honestly I have been a Marshall man since the early 80's and have tried a few amps here and there but always went back to Marshall but I have never tried the amp your talking about, sorry to disappoint you but all I can say is go with what you think sounds better for you. I have heard those amps on records " listen to that, records, I was born about 1960 so forgive me" now if memory serves me isn't that a peavey the Eddie VanHalen model? If so you can't go wrong but I am definitely a Marshall guy but that's just me. Follow your ears and your inner voice, your heart and get the one that pleases you. I am so sorry that I was no help. One thing I can tell you about the Marshall is, you would most likely want to change the speaker, they put a bottom of the line celestion in her to keep the cost down so there is another $200 you will most likely spend if that's any help. Look at blogs or TH-cam to see what other players think about the speaker, I know I didn't like it until I bought a creamback then it rocked but see what other players think about the speaker in the Marshall and go from there. The DSL40CR is a great amp but so is the other amp so no matter which one you pick there both great amps just depends what music you play and what you like. I got a DSL40cr yesterday, was playing around with it last night, I notice sometimes it wont switch between channels with the button on the unit, but will with the foot switch. But its not consistently doing it, am I missing something? Most of the time turning it off and back on fixes it.
@@kaptkrunchfpv Sorry to hear that, some of these amps have reported to have different problems off the assembly line. What you're experiencing doesn't sound right, I haven't experienced that. Go on the Marshall forum and you will read the different problems people have had with this amp, I have read some problems players have had.. If you bought it brand new then go back and tell them the problem and trade for a different one that works properly. If you bought it used because you did not specify, get your money back. When I bought mine I tried the one I was receiving to look for problems. Sorry to hear that but one of three things. First it could cause other problems if you keep using it. Second, you don't want that failing while gigging. If it works with the foot switch then use it that way because it only sounds like a problem with the switch on the panel which may cause other problems down the road and it could be as simple as a cold solder joint but still cause other problems down the road. If it's new, take it back but I wouldn't trust it to keep on using it like that but that's just me paying a lot of money and having even the smallest thing that doesn't work like it should. You can have the volumes on the individual channels up and turn your master volumes down. I did that and it was at bedroom level where it did not bother anyone but naturally your not going to get the tone of pushing the main tubes but it will be pushing the preamp tubes but your still not going to get the tone of a cranked up amp but if that doesn't bother you, yes you can get it at a level where it will not bother your neighbors with the master volumes way down. they are awesome amps have had one for over 5 years...A maxon od 808 or a ibenez od sounds great through these as does a freisman pedal//Awesome Marshalls.
I'm about 4 minutes in and totally lost. The Boss Katana 100 did this to me, too. Once things get memorized and knobs on the board don't reflect reality anymore then I just mentally check out.
I am so sorry for disappointing you but I can see where your coming from. Marshall and Boss didn't make user friendly amps. This video was from weeks of research and it was not easy for me at all. Look at some of my comments people left, some people have a hard time and other thank me for making it clear to them so your not alone. Hang in there and watch it a few more time if you choose and it might start making sence. I own a couple other amps with only 2 channels just for the very reason, there easy to set up and go so can't blame you. Like I replied to you before, if Marshall and Boss made user friendly amps it would be much better. The amp I use the most is my simple Marshall DSL20CR, super simple, loud enough and straight forward no fancy bells and whistles, just two channels with an effects loop.
@@thomasbowlin6787 Hi. You didn't disappoint me at all! I think it's just a problem I have once I have to think abstractly about this stuff. I'm more of a direct / visual guy. If I see a knob in one certain position then I expect it to mean a certain thing. Once it gets multi-level I just have a hard time with it. This is definitely a 'my brain' thing. Your video otherwise was great. And I definitely intend to watch it a couple times so it sinks in. It will eventually. It just takes me some time. Once I saw other people saying that it helped them I knew I should give it more time. But thank you for responding! Oh, and I should say that I just played the amp in Guitar Center today and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it. So I *have* to understand it! Haha.
The only question that's stupid is the question not asked. The effects loop goes after the preamp built in your amp and the jacks are in the back of the amp, one is labeled send and the other is labeled return. time based processors tend to work well after the pre-amp, such as chorus/flange/phaser, reverb, delays etc. Send goes to the input of a pedal and the output of a pedal goes to the return. Normally overdrive pedals, wha pedals ect, tend to go best in front of the amp. I hope that answered your question. Thanks for watching and asking, it's very appreciated.

When I did make some videos shots of me playing it, the sound was terrible because of the mic on my video camera so I decided to leave it out and really, I just wanted to help players who were having troubles figuring this amp out. I have basically this same setup and amp and pedals let me ask you can I run my tube screamer into the effects loop? I see you have to set this way with the delay going into the effect loop
It might of looked like I had my tube screamer in the effects loop because of all the wires but I have my compressor going into my tube screamer then going in the front of my amp. Effects loop works best when you put modulation pedal like chorus, delay, reverb pedal anything in that category. Effects loops generally do not like overdrive pedals but there are no set rules but myself I would never put my tube screamer in my effects loop chain. I hope this helps and clarify the my tube screamer in front of the amp. One more thing that just might help in case you don't have this info and if you do no disrespect intended, and yes you were right about overdrive or distortion go in the front of the amp. I go into my tuner going into my wha wha pedal going into my compressor pedal going into my tube screamer going into the front of my amp. From my effects loop send, I go into my Boss chorus the ch-1, from there my MXR analog delay going into my MXR Micro amp for boost when I need it going into my tc electronic hall of fame 2 reverb going back to the return of my effects loop. That's my setup, hope that helps for the future and there are reasons I have those pedals in that order in my effects loop.

The EQ pedal is fairly scooped and I put some mid's in with the amp and distortion to give some mid substance that way. Scooped, but not fully scooped.
I know a tube amp will need a learning curve from me. I know that amp is capable of really pushing out some gain that sounds "organic" and not so processed. I've seen some use the Metal Zone pedal instead of an overdrive, but just put the pedal's gain to 0. I am curious to what sounds I will get from it. I will get an overdrive pedal as well.
I know I will need a good attenuator as well. I am looking forward to learning about this.
@@jeremymiller6933 you might want to read about a pedal Marshall makes. It's call the governor. There hard to get at the moment. I am waiting for Sweetwater music to get them back in but that won't be until September. That pedal into a Marshall amp sounds sweet plus it has its own EQ but then again I am always looking for that classic rock sound. Sometimes with pedals and EQ'S less is more. The more pedals you use the more you have the possibility of what they call tone suck. That's how it can be with tube amps because you want to get the core of your sound from pushing the tubes, much different than transistor amps.
@@jeremymiller6933 read up on line about tone suck or pedals they call tone suckered, they literally suck your tone and that's when you need buffers, a good buffer that will bring the tone back. With tube amps it's a totally different world than using transistor or modeling amps. Just trying to give you some bread crumbs to follow the trail into the world of tube amps. Look it up and see what other players say about certain pedals sucking your tone and how they take care of it. Here is how you really tell if something is sucking up tone. With a tube amp start out with no pedals. Add one pedal at a time until you start to here your tone from a tube amp starting to change in way where it changes your core sound you get from your tube amps with no pedals. Now I am not saying don't use alot of pedals I am just stressing that to many pedals with tube amps can shape your sound for the better or the opposite. Hope this helps

Iam 72 yrs old , have enjoyed several amplifiers. My early fender super reverb 4x10s was something I should of kept, but the 40 dsl beats down that easily. The memory feature of the DSL 40 is a good tool and the reason why the crunch lead position is louder is no mistake you need this volume . Your rhythm guitarist knows what's going on and will have this covered as will your bass player. You don't worry about over thinking this amp , I would definitely stay tuned to this station for extra skills in working the DSL40

I just bought the DSL20CR. 2 reasons, 1 much easier to use, they don't have the 2 master volumes, just independent volumes for the two channels, one voicing for each channel. Classic gain and ultra gain with an effects loop. The greatest advantage for this guy who is no longer a spring chicken is the size and weight. Much smaller so you sacrifice some sound and the speaker isn't great either but for an open jam or a band that plays small places it's perfect for me and a lot more straight forward amp with little to no learning curve. I have had it breaking my back hauling the 40CR around plus yes they made the thing way to complicated and if you do have a big venue then just mic it, the 20CR still sounds great, it's a DSL and very convenient and it still sounds like a Marshall with a nice clean channel.

Great video! Great amp. I would like to see independent EQ’s for each channel. I noticed a huge sound and volume difference between channels. This can be frustrating if you’re switching tones during a song. Example: switch for more volume for solos. Cheers and happy rocking!
Absolutely that what drives me crazy about this amp. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. If I am not mistaken, which I might be, don't they make a English made version that is a lot of money that have independent eq's for each channel although I don't know how many channels the amp has, I know atleast 2 but man is there a lot of knobs on that amp. Great Video. BTW, those white spaces on the footswitch are for where to label the switches. You can use a sharpie, or tape. Looks tonnes near putting them in there than a huge strip of masking tape at the bottom! (I have carefully cut white post labels in those places with the settings on)

I do believe the guitar player from years ago who pissed off sound guys really bad had to have been Randy Rhoads before he played with Ozzy. He played so loud, some clubs shut him down. lol

Honestly I have been a Marshall man since the early 80's and have tried a few amps here and there but always went back to Marshall but I have never tried the amp your talking about, sorry to disappoint you but all I can say is go with what you think sounds better for you. I have heard those amps on records " listen to that, records, I was born about 1960 so forgive me" now if memory serves me isn't that a peavey the Eddie VanHalen model? If so you can't go wrong but I am definitely a Marshall guy but that's just me. Follow your ears and your inner voice, your heart and get the one that pleases you. I am so sorry that I was no help. One thing I can tell you about the Marshall is, you would most likely want to change the speaker, they put a bottom of the line celestion in her to keep the cost down so there is another $200 you will most likely spend if that's any help. Look at blogs or TH-cam to see what other players think about the speaker, I know I didn't like it until I bought a creamback then it rocked but see what other players think about the speaker in the Marshall and go from there. The DSL40CR is a great amp but so is the other amp so no matter which one you pick there both great amps just depends what music you play and what you like.

I got a DSL40cr yesterday, was playing around with it last night, I notice sometimes it wont switch between channels with the button on the unit, but will with the foot switch. But its not consistently doing it, am I missing something? Most of the time turning it off and back on fixes it.
@@kaptkrunchfpv Sorry to hear that, some of these amps have reported to have different problems off the assembly line. What you're experiencing doesn't sound right, I haven't experienced that. Go on the Marshall forum and you will read the different problems people have had with this amp, I have read some problems players have had.. If you bought it brand new then go back and tell them the problem and trade for a different one that works properly. If you bought it used because you did not specify, get your money back. When I bought mine I tried the one I was receiving to look for problems. Sorry to hear that but one of three things. First it could cause other problems if you keep using it. Second, you don't want that failing while gigging. If it works with the foot switch then use it that way because it only sounds like a problem with the switch on the panel which may cause other problems down the road and it could be as simple as a cold solder joint but still cause other problems down the road. If it's new, take it back but I wouldn't trust it to keep on using it like that but that's just me paying a lot of money and having even the smallest thing that doesn't work like it should. You can have the volumes on the individual channels up and turn your master volumes down. I did that and it was at bedroom level where it did not bother anyone but naturally your not going to get the tone of pushing the main tubes but it will be pushing the preamp tubes but your still not going to get the tone of a cranked up amp but if that doesn't bother you, yes you can get it at a level where it will not bother your neighbors with the master volumes way down. they are awesome amps have had one for over 5 years...A maxon od 808 or a ibenez od sounds great through these as does a freisman pedal//Awesome Marshalls.

The Boss Katana 100 did this to me, too. Once things get memorized and knobs on the board don't reflect reality anymore then I just mentally check out.
I am so sorry for disappointing you but I can see where your coming from. Marshall and Boss didn't make user friendly amps. This video was from weeks of research and it was not easy for me at all. Look at some of my comments people left, some people have a hard time and other thank me for making it clear to them so your not alone. Hang in there and watch it a few more time if you choose and it might start making sence. I own a couple other amps with only 2 channels just for the very reason, there easy to set up and go so can't blame you. Like I replied to you before, if Marshall and Boss made user friendly amps it would be much better. The amp I use the most is my simple Marshall DSL20CR, super simple, loud enough and straight forward no fancy bells and whistles, just two channels with an effects loop.
By the way the Marshall DSL20CR is my favorite amp and the DSL40CR has to many cliches in my opinion.
@@thomasbowlin6787 Hi. You didn't disappoint me at all! I think it's just a problem I have once I have to think abstractly about this stuff. I'm more of a direct / visual guy. If I see a knob in one certain position then I expect it to mean a certain thing. Once it gets multi-level I just have a hard time with it. This is definitely a 'my brain' thing. Your video otherwise was great. And I definitely intend to watch it a couple times so it sinks in. It will eventually. It just takes me some time. Once I saw other people saying that it helped them I knew I should give it more time. But thank you for responding! Oh, and I should say that I just played the amp in Guitar Center today and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it. So I *have* to understand it! Haha.

Absolutely, Fender amps are very user-friendly.
Stupid question, but what is an effects loop?
The only question that's stupid is the question not asked. The effects loop goes after the preamp built in your amp and the jacks are in the back of the amp, one is labeled send and the other is labeled return. time based processors tend to work well after the pre-amp, such as chorus/flange/phaser, reverb, delays etc. Send goes to the input of a pedal and the output of a pedal goes to the return. Normally overdrive pedals, wha pedals ect, tend to go best in front of the amp. I hope that answered your question. Thanks for watching and asking, it's very appreciated.

I have basically this same setup and amp and pedals let me ask you can I run my tube screamer into the effects loop? I see you have to set this way with the delay going into the effect loop
It might of looked like I had my tube screamer in the effects loop because of all the wires but I have my compressor going into my tube screamer then going in the front of my amp. Effects loop works best when you put modulation pedal like chorus, delay, reverb pedal anything in that category. Effects loops generally do not like overdrive pedals but there are no set rules but myself I would never put my tube screamer in my effects loop chain. I hope this helps and clarify the my tube screamer in front of the amp.

One more thing that just might help in case you don't have this info and if you do no disrespect intended, and yes you were right about overdrive or distortion go in the front of the amp. I go into my tuner going into my wha wha pedal going into my compressor pedal going into my tube screamer going into the front of my amp. From my effects loop send, I go into my Boss chorus the ch-1, from there my MXR analog delay going into my MXR Micro amp for boost when I need it going into my tc electronic hall of fame 2 reverb going back to the return of my effects loop. That's my setup, hope that helps for the future and there are reasons I have those pedals in that order in my effects loop.
