There has to be something wrong with your amp. My DSL 40cr sounds nothing like that and puts out good cleans, crunch, and the ultra gain channels kick butt!
I agree, mine sounds outstanding. I was think that amp id phed up as he was twisting knobs. Bottom line you want cleans, buy a Fender or a Mesa you can't lose
You obviously know a lot about amps and are a great player. One thing you may not know is that over 70% of all sound you hear is reverberated off the walls floor and ceiling. Any speaker on the floor will have more base as the base reflects more efficiently off the floor. Also as its an open back amp, if you place it about 2 feet from the rear wall you wall also get a significant base boost. Keep on rocking 🙂
What pickups are in the guitar you're using in this vid? I've switched it's Celestion V-type with Eminence Texas Heat B 16ohms and it is now singing. What a great little versatile amp. It sounds spectacular with my Gibson Custombuckers.
Nobody buys a marshall for the clean sounds Having said that u may need to have it looked at Tubes may have been damaged in shipping and to my ears it's not biased properly 9:20
Man, I apologise to you !! I've watched your other reviews and are very positive. I'll admit that I have been way out of line with my comments and you have been more than generous with yours.
No kidding!!! Total agreement here! Who would buy Marshall amplifier known for its distortion and expect it to sound like a fender twin also? Possibly someone that don't know what they're doing? 😕😕😕😕😕
I had a great experience with mine although I sold it to make room for my stacks. Mine did not sound nearly this thin or scooped. I wonder if there’s a difference in interactions because I’d be disappointed too!
I have had 3 DSL, and i always come back, they are good for the money, the only issue with mine is the footswitch, but i don't use it anyway. keep us updated if you fixed yours.
I sold mine the first week, or traded it I should say for an acoustic.. I can't do 1 x 12 s anymore. Seriously about to get another Katana 2 x 12, probably best money I've spent on amps in 50 years. The only amp I want otherwise is an Amplified Nation.
Cannot stand how versatile my katana is for gigs. I’ve looked for every reason to get rid of it, and I find myself going for it more than my Marshall often. Light, easy, sounds great.
I'm on my 4th one. The first 3 amps had something going on with the master volumes. Really noisey and one just quite while im playing it. The fourth amp is really quiet even with the masters cranked. I hope this one lasts. I play mostly classic rock and this amp delivers in spades. I have a loud drummer and we have to repaint his studio walls because the Marshall ripped the paint off. If you get one that works it's inspiring...
Good call! I sold my JCM 2000 100 watt head when I got the DSL 40! I agree it's virtually the same amplifier. Turns out 40 watts was all I needed. To each their own I guess?
I bought on elf these brand new - it was defective from day one. I couldn't figure it out as I was new to to the Marshall world . finally another friend was able to find the problem he fixed it and sold it mine sounded like absolute crap- never again
They had two at band rehearsal. I just set one of the channels to edge of break up and used a Boss Super OD pedal. not bad, not good, just did the job. with the whole band added it sounded fine.
I'm sure there's a great amp in there somewhere. Probably just needs a fettle. IMHO the DSL 40C is easily the most bang for your buck out there. I see these going for $250 used. That's crazy. A few dabs of a soldering iron and maybe a speaker swap and you got a do-it-all-amp that's portable.
I've done a ton of research on this amp and most of the demo's are amazingly good, most saying what a great amp for the buck, sounds really good, then there's this dude? I love the Marshall sound. I don't care for dudes who make youtube stuff about negative, that is what to me really SUCKS.

Yeah something's definitely wrong with your amp. The crunch channel should have way more gain than what you're getting. I just tested it out with gain on 10 like you had it and my strat with single coils gets a lot more overdriven. Sort of Jimi Hendrix territory. And also, it's not really one of those amps that likes to just sit with all the controls at noon. You really have to find the sweet spot and then the amp sings. It can really go from being a mud fest to piercing your eardrums. I never really touch the resonance control though. The amp already has enough bass. But it should definitely sound a lot better than yours is displaying.
definitely something going on there, i've never heard one sound that bad. it's almost like you tried to make it sound bad. i don't own one but i know lots of people who do and they sound nothing like that.
Haha that’s the best one yet. It’s so bad it musta been ME to make it so bad. Dude, this was the THIRD unit I took home, and still had to replace the power tubes before it was 100. Not everyone has money enough though to pay $1000's for an amp. My model has loads of room for overdrive, and it sounds very good, so perhaps your model does have a problem, valves are tricky things.
