Several years ago, I had bought one of these old service station island oil racks. I did the same rustoleum paint jobs on it, and got the same results. after a week or so,it has dulled out. I then went and scuffed it down I think with 1000 grit, and used rustoleum clear on it, and got a nice shine that lasted. My issues was more with my prep. After a year I started getting bubble from under the paint. It appears that product you used on the fender dried harder than say rustoleum or other rattle can paints? I have a older car which I am planning on painting in a year or two. But I recently had a shop do some engine work on for me, and they used that sticky clear plastic fender cover on. they stuck it on the inner fender they left it on for for like 3 weeks when they pulled it off it took the paint on the inner fender off. Is this UPOL system something I can use to to mask off this area of and do a spot repair?
@paintucation could you link the cleaner, shop towels, and all the equipment you use in this video? I want to begin tackling some automotive painting in my garage.
@@NorthO-i9c It is just paint, there is a difference in someone wanting yo just spray painting, and some one doing the job correctly. I have seen quite a few rattle can paint jobs that looked good.

About 4 years ago I did a rattle can paint job on an old Honda. Everyone is familiar with with 90s Hondas peeling clear coat. We used Aircraft paint remover and carefully removed all the paint. Used a rattle can of light grey primer, 6 pack of red sunrise rattle cans, waited 2 weeks and keyed the paint with 400 grit. Used 2K clear rattle can over the top. Brother, it was perfect... This many years later it still looks like new.
So glad to have just found Kevin on TH-cam. It was a Paintucation DVD I bought probably 20 years ago started me off painting, I’ve lost count on how many paint jobs I’ve now done. A big thanks Kevin from the UK and look forward to watching your videos 👍
That is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this with me, that warms up my heart and makes me want to keep on pushing. :-) seriously, thank you for sharing this!
I watched you paint the motorcycle tank and, in that video, you made the comment, "I don't know why I'm talking so much". I retired from the floor coverings installation trade and, in the course of my career, trained several installers. The constant talking, as you're working, is a very good teaching tool. As your students are watching you work, they are hearing what they are seeing, making understanding much easier. I'm in the final stages of restoring a 1981 Corvette and will soon begin the paint process. I've been surfing U-Tube videos for someone who explains the paint process in a language I can understand and finally found that with your videos. I've never painted a car before, but am confident I'll get the idea from your videos. Thank you for the detailed explanations.
Thanks!!! I'll certainly do some paint projects here on TH-cam, but I have several instructional videos available that show detailed paint training. Let me know how I can help!!
The wife's T-Bird was the absolute clincher for me. I have a few minor scratches in my wife's and I believe it might be the same color ! I literally watch both part 1 and 2. No skipping or fast forwarding. I enjoy the chat while working because that's when useful tips often come. I like that you made mistakes, explained them and showed how to fix them. I've definitely learned a lot and look forward to trying this out and seeing more videos.
That finish is amazing. That's perfect for a DIY job on a motorcycle or a 4-wheeler. Hell, if you can get these cans with a variety paint codes, you can blend panels for rust repair/replacement/repair. Very cool. Paint technology has come a long way.
Upol is the king of coatings, they have an entire line of diy products that actually last. They are far superior than Rust-Oleum and duplicolor, I've been using upol for almost everything and can't beat the quality sure that brand is a bit pricey but man is it worth it lol. Great job Kevin 👍🏼

The excitement you get talking about the two stage breakdown is amazing. Passion makes for a great teacher. Loved watching you even back in the Trucks days.
Great tutorial video! Here’s another tip, keep a paper towel in your back pocket, and every so often wipe the spray can nozzle. They have a tendency to build up blobs that can end up dripping into the finish coat.
I noticed you used a small screwdriver with the pad for the crevices …I was waiting for it to poke through and scratch the painted surface 😬. My thought was a wood dowel. You can grind the point to fit and have much less risk of creating more work by scratching the surface you are painting. Excited for the next time I do a paint thing after picking up so many bits of knowledge I can apply. Thanks!
Hack? no lets not call it a hack. Everyone seems to over used that word for anything that makes things easier or gets a job done. Tip or trick should be the right word. Thanks for all you do Kevin.
Extremely informative! Water based cleaners before base coat: in the previous video you used glass cleaner then a commercial solvent based cleaner, in this video you used an unidentified water based cleaner that has isopropyl alcohol and then solvent based. Is there any difference in the two processes? If I were to spend thousands of dollars on top notch basecoat clearcoat system what is the best products and sequence? Thank you very much for your help.
I use Upol a lot and am very happy with it in certain circumstances, kind of like what you are doing in this video. I've had the same issue with my fingertip interfering with the spray. I stopped wearing a glove 🙂. I learned a lot watching this video. Thanks very much!
I'm into high power rocketry and I've painted rockets with both automotive type paints (2 stage) and rattle cans. The rattle cans give a decent finish and like the tank you did, too many coats causes them to crackle. With rattle cans I found if I need more than 1 coat I let it off gas for a week or two, sand it down smooth and hit it with another coat. Most times I will not have an issue with cracking or delaminating paint. I have sprayed out a rocket with rattle can paint and followed it up with an automotive clear with decent results. I do get delamination of the clear if I don't allow everything to cure for about a month (our launches are 1 a month in good weather). The last rocket I sprayed with rattle can paint and automotive clear delaminated on the 2nd launch but on the first launch the nosecone hit the body tube and scuffed the paint and clear. The clear peeled off on the second flight. Painting with rattle cans is always a crapshoot but with 2 stage I always get really good results. I'm definitely going to try the Upol lineup.
Hi Kevin, love you videos, keep up the good work. Wouldnt it be better to paint the fender in a verticle position , instead of horizontal. I would have thought, even though the car is pressurized, keeping the can a vertical as possible is best technique?
Great video! The over the counter spray cans are getting so much better. As for shaking the can, your sawsall shaker does work, check out Puddin's fab shop on using it.
Really enjoying your content today's video was very helpful. A lot of really cool tips for using a rattle can including the finger tip. I was wondered for those drips came from this will help everything I ever spray paint. Thank you.
Thanks for spray bomb education. That product turned out great with your expert installation. thanks for sharing, I really enjoy watching your videos. learned alot with this one Thanks
Its so refreshing to see a professional who's not an absolutist, its annoying to see guys die on swords just because they dont have the skill or experience. Well done brother!
They do make a can holder for shaking paint on the old salz-all. Also seen them for cordless drill. I have been using the Upol primer for several years now and it is my go to for rattle cans and the nozzles are pretty good, very similar to the ones on the Clearmax products. The Clearmax 2K cans are awesome by the way, they lay down and absolutely gorgeous coat with little orange peel. I know the PPE is needed but I just use a 3M respirator in a well ventilated area. The Autozones around me do not carry the professional cans of color or clear at all, just primers.
Awesome video. Awesome channel. I’ve already learned a whole bunch, and I appreciate that. It’ll help me with my own projects. Keep up the great content.
Fan-friggin'-tastic, mate! Like you, I could use a plethora of what my kids used to call "Daddy Words" to describe the result, but the proof is sitting there looking right at me and really needs no further embellishment than that.... ....except for maybe the word "WOW" in about 144pt with a dozen exclamation marks! I thought the tank came out well, but as you say, it's now showing its limitations. Looks like it's one of those things you either get right in the application and then let it harden up to look its best, or you miss out and with the knowledge that any form of correction will mean you need to add a finisher every few weeks. The second system looks to be the way to go - and that's great, because I have a car that I need to repair a couple of small panels on and would rather not spend umpty-thousand dollars on the gear, the PPE and the paint etc to do them. Even how it finished up before you sanded and polished the guard looked pretty damn good and to me, would have been good enough.....but wow! Now it will be interesting to see how they keep their gloss over time. Many thanks for showing us this product and how it can be used. It's been an eye-opener for sure! One quick thought - I have another vehicle where the clear coat has left the entire panel and the colour is all that remains. Have you ever tried just prepping that sort of panel and re-clearing it without respraying the colour as well? Because I started thinking that maybe even with a couple of cans of that 'clear coat in a can' it might look better than it does....but I'd hate to make the car look worse! All the best
So funny Kevin. One plus to a PPE full bunny suit is that it keeps YOU off the paint surface, you know hair and other body schmutz. Thanks for the great info, Kevin.
@@paintucation copied from first video: @perryj20 2 months ago Kevin; Thanks for this video. It answered many questions I had regarding using Rustoleum paint for automotive use. I think the main point of the video was made near the end when you mentioned it's inherent lack of robustness to UV and gasoline. So naturally I was wondering if it was an acceptable process to apply a 2K urethane based clear over the dried Rustoleum; If that product was compatible with Rustoleum then you would have a paint job which would be durable w.r.t UV and other chemical solvents. I expect the answer is that it won't bond well but many are claiming to have success with this approach (even in the comments here). Your thoughts? Thanks again!
I am a retired body tech. In the 70s and 80s we all painted our own jobs, no such thing as a painter. I always struggled with the wait time between coats I tended to rush things too much. You could get in lots of trouble on a synthol enamel overall paint job. Don't ask me how I know.
Nice finish on fender, looks like Ford blue. Liked the tips on finger location & repairing drip. You are exacting on the times, before you go to next stage. Good info.
Hi Kevin I started of life as a paint and body guy but life took a different direction and I spent 35 years as an elevator tech. Long story short last paint I used was single stage enamel. My wife recently closed the garage door causing damage to the clear. I plan on sanding out scratches and trying to blend, my question is if I sand into base do I have to shot base then clear or can I clear over original base. Big fan of the show as well as your previous work Thx Tom
Kevin, you csn buy 2k clear at Autozone same as thr Upol paints , also if your spray painting something you not in a booth most likely your outside maybe in a garage, a good mask and maybe a spray suit is plenty of PPE to spray a spray can of 2k clear.
It makes sense that companies started putting adjustable nozzles on their cans. It's a lot easier to control when you get a nice pattern. I really like that color of blue. BTW, you have to be a genuine Okie for the paint can shaker saw to work correctly LOL... Just curious, what does "holy snappin bungholes" mean ? I caught that when you were looking at the fender after you buffed it.. 🤔
Was curious on your thoughts on a “diy” style paint system that keeps the paint and solvent in a separate container from the propellant, and applied as if it was being sprayed from a pro gun. Propellant could be supplied via a paintball gun type CO2 cartridge.
Wow, what a demo! Great product. I couldn't believe how much clear you loaded on that 2nd coat, but it worked. I know the answer is "experience" but I'd like to know how you can tell how thick to apply paint (or clear), and is thick better than 2-3 more thin coats? Thx.
There's such a a thing as a light "full" coat, where you travel fast and close the droplet structure slowly ... That way you can have a lot of materials applied and not have runs or says.
for the tight "valley" wrap the scuff pad around the edge of a credit card style card or even a small bondo applicator. You won't have to worry about a screwdriver poking through and gouging the paint.
I paint models and hotwheels and use lots of duplicolor products, and love them, I’ve noticed that the auto stores are getting away from duplicolor and going to Upol, so I’ve been wondering how well it works.. and it works very well!! How would that Upol clear work on the rustoleum tank? I hate mixing products myself, I get lots of peel and end up starting over.
That’s really good to know about the squeaking! Thanks for that tip! Does that apply to all aspects of wiping down paint? I had to get tar off my truck from freshly paved roads in the hot summer Texas heat… and I got a lot of squeaking while I was cleaning it off with bug and tar remover…. I hope I didn’t do a bad thing to my paint! Lol speaking of, do you have any good tips and tricks or products you prefer to getting things like road tar off of paint? Thanks for this little mini series, that was a ton of good information!
The squeak under sand paper is destructive, that's what I was referring to.... Typically on sanding for polish where you're not filling anything in,just polishing .... not paint prep, it's not as critical ...
Kevin, can you explain the difference of thickness of a rattle can single or 2 stage vs that out of a spray gun? How to determine how much you can paint correct before burning thru?
I don't know if anyone has said it or not but good spray paint cans have either a black dot or a dimple in the metal to show where the position of the bottom tip of the straw is so you can line up your nozzle for better spraying and when spaying upwards turn nozzle 180 degrees the bottom tip of the straw stays in the paint

Great content I'm so glad you have this channel so we can all learn with you
LOL. Funny education. You are very good and the result are amazing. 👏👍😆🇸🇪
Thank you very much for your help.
this was great. I honestly didn't know 2K was a catalyst clear coat, so that does help to know!
Loved this, I’ve always wondered if this was possible, I’ve done similar with furniture with pretty good results, but this looks great, Thanks
I use Upol a lot and am very happy with it in certain circumstances, kind of like what you are doing in this video. I've had the same issue with my fingertip interfering with the spray. I stopped wearing a glove 🙂. I learned a lot watching this video. Thanks very much!
Thanks for watching! I'm learning too! No matter how many times I spray, there's always something that comes up. :)
@@paintucation That’s for sure. I’m going to use your masking tape trick in drips and runs. Thanks for that tip 👍
Love this, I did my doors on my can am x3 max doors, thank you. All I need is for it to last till I roll it again :)
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
That came out much better then I ever expected!
Me too!
This was great! Thanks for trying the Upol products, ive been curious. Love the channel!
Awesome video. Awesome channel. I’ve already learned a whole bunch, and I appreciate that. It’ll help me with my own projects. Keep up the great content.
This is awesome! What a wealth of information for us rattlecan weekend warriors!
Thanks! You answered my question from the first video with this one.
What was the question?

Kevin; Thanks for this video.
It’s good he keeps making common mistakes, it shows what to avoid and how to come back from it.
Good trick with the wax and grease remover wet sanding
Really loved the video and I think this would be a great way to do an engine bay. At least for a amateur like my self
Glad it was helpful!
I'm sold!
Good info.
Flash time is pretty important..... Thanks for watching!
I would have stopped with the first try..... outstanding job!!!😅
23:21 aren’t you supposed to line up the nozzle with that black dot on the can??
Hi Kevin
I started of life as a paint and body guy but life took a different direction and I spent 35 years as an elevator tech. Long story short last paint I used was single stage enamel. My wife recently closed the garage door causing damage to the clear. I plan on sanding out scratches and trying to blend, my question is if I sand into base do I have to shot base then clear or can I clear over original base.
Big fan of the show as well as your previous work
Thx Tom
Another great video, could you explain what mistakes you made and leanprned with the rustoelum paint job?
Another banger video from Kevin!
Appreciate it!
Thanks for the excellent instructions!!!
Superb result and an entertaining and educational video too.
Kevin, you csn buy 2k clear at Autozone same as thr Upol paints , also if your spray painting something you not in a booth most likely your outside maybe in a garage, a good mask and maybe a spray suit is plenty of PPE to spray a spray can of 2k clear.
Looks good. Love the color
It makes sense that companies started putting adjustable nozzles on their cans. It's a lot easier to control
when you get a nice pattern. I really like that color of blue.
BTW, you have to be a genuine Okie for the paint can shaker saw to work correctly LOL...
Just curious, what does "holy snappin bungholes" mean ? I caught that when you were looking at the fender
after you buffed it.. 🤔
You're such a goofball. But I love your technical information and guidance. Looking forward to fighting against the "patina" paint work out there.
Patina paint in most situations means neglected.
Love what you do Kevin. But but but I just scuffed up my bumper and used minimal tape. Used O’Reillys Toyota paint match spray can. It’s fine.
That clear looks good! I was trying to decide between Dupli color clear or upol but this looks way better than Dupli color others review on TH-cam
@@paintucation oh ok, good deal! Had me a touch worried I was grinding dirt and trash down into the clear coat! Haha! Thanks again!
I love using rattle cans for guitars they are cool looking and wont see the outdoors much so its a great option for that
👌 wow,I think I would go back to the store and get more products and match all the tins😊
If I actually had the rest of the bike I definitely would. I just got the tins.
Kevin, at 5:18 is that a shrinking disc on the wall?
Really good show Kev, but I miss the egg timer, A fellow painter In UK.
Kevin, can you explain the difference of thickness of a rattle can single or 2 stage vs that out of a spray gun? How to determine how much you can paint correct before burning thru?
Amazing! Thanks for the video!
My Truck is ugly but im still scared to death to knock down the clearcoat. Long time Fan love finding you again through VGG I Woke up Every weekend to Watch TNN and all the shows IM Not a Morning Person But We Didnt have DVR"s
The look on ur face is priceless!
