This 280ZX Broke my heart!
มุมมอง 46Kวันที่ผ่านมา
I got nostalgic and bought this S130 280ZX on a heartstring impulse without really looking at it... HUGE MISTAKE!!! I should have brought a jack and a flashlight, but I saw it through rose colored glasses. I had one many years ago and thought I could pick up where that car left off... not so much. This inspection has lots of surprises, none of them good!!! Follow me: www.Paintucation.com instag...

I may have figured out a way to take it off his hands while he's off doing revivals, and put my touches on it. The goals are laid out in this episode......

    I've owned at least one of every generation Camaro upto 2005. Every one suffered the same inherent Camaro problem. They handle like crap unless you do some major weight movement and front end work. The first three gens understeer to the point that gaurd rails were by far the best way to get them around a corner. I drive a 72 911T. I like cars that can go around a corner. I'm the same way about bikes. Amd then, 74. EPA, and rubber bumpers. This is one I'd take straight to the recycling shop. Our shop does about 3 rods a year. We wouldn't waste time on this. Have fun all.

    I used this paint to paint my bike. It says on the can to recoat "within 1 hour or after 48 hours." My experience is if you wait more than 30 minutes, it will wrinkle every time, because the new paint dries quicker than the previous coat. You do several coats waiting no more than 15 minutes, then leave it for 48 hours to wet sand. After sanding you must wait another 48 hours to recoat or clear. If you don't want to sand, you can clear within that 30-minute window or you have to wait 48 hours. I've tried everything with regular Rustoleum and 2X rustoleum, these rules are absolute.

    • @paintucation
      @paintucation วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not a dumb question at all! Paint stripper is really messy and very time consuming.... this paintjob ( one overtop of the original paint) has good adhesion between the layers and was properly prepped... I've determined its safe to work overtop of what's there. If I don't trust what's underneath, I'll go to bare-metal.

    I for one really appreciated this episode, I think you are a great teacher... Buuuut, and I know this is probably per the customer Derek's wants, but the filler everywhere crap sounds bad... I thought its only supposed to be 1/16th or less? maybe thats all you are seeing a need for I dont know, you never said how off it is... Id like to see some hammer and dolly, PDR, and some of that glue stuff with with the plastic pieces you pull with a slide hammer for perfection... maybe since im new to your channel I need to go back and search older vids, but I for one hate working with filler and want to learn more of the metal working. I have a project Im working on that I picked up for a steal because insurance totalled it for hail damage and need to get better at the metal working part without damaging existing paint. This video was great though, I did learn a few things I hadnt discovered either on my own or in other videos. Thank you for that, looking forward to more vids.

    • @paintucation
      @paintucation 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      well, I horse-traded the car knowing full well it has issues.... so did the gentleman I traded with, so there's nothing "SHADY" about this transaction... This stage in this build is about assessment, creating a repair strategy, and fixing things one project at a time. What did I pay? traded a well used 67 Mustang inline-6 and loose transmission out of a base Mustang... We both got what we wanted, and I changed gears and decided to restore this one instead of using it as a parts car like I originally intended.

I was late for range (retired LEO) and backed right into a tree. I thought I lost my teeth and knocked the soda out of my hand. I took off and made it to range then discovered the bumper was hanging by a thread. Those sides that wrap around and attach to the lower rear skirts just curled that sheet metal. I was heart broken. Great episode! in the small areas that you hit metal on the top bed rail, could you have hammered that high spot down to minimize the amount of filler or do you just keep chasing the high spots doing that and have a huge sag?

    • @paintucation
      @paintucation 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Every time you move metal, it goes somewhere else... I hesitate to tap those areas down until I know whats under the metal.... Sometimes hammering down the high-spots causes filler around the area to fracture, and that can come back on you... Unless I'm stripping to metal ( which is not a bad idea) typically I'll use filler as long as the thickness is within reason. Does that make sense?

    There's a time and place for power tools. I find the use of hand tools, even when stripping down, allows the finesse to really let me know if those little bolts and screws were 8lbs or 12lbs. which matters when I put them back in later. Sometimes, I just zip everything off because I know I'm replacing all the nuts bolts clips and the rest of them, so I just don't bother finessing anything.
