FIX OR REPLACE? Which Camaro Fenders cost more?
I've always said, Time is as much a currency as money is... how do we spend it? should we get new @autometaldirect Front fenders and be done with it? or salvage what's already there, and what's in pretty good shape? Are we killing the spirit of the car by replacing ALL the panels? and are we just throwing money at it? Personally I love the restoration process... and saving the old panels is very important... when it makes sense! Restoring these fenders will cost me 15-20 hours real-time labor... AND fenders would cost me about $800.00 with tax and shipping for both. What is the best path?

Best Way To Weld On Garbage Camaro? Spot Or Mig?
มุมมอง 26Kวันที่ผ่านมา
DIY Spot Welding? I accidentally bought a spot welder and put it to work! The results are amazing! BONUS, we figure out a legit way to protect inner panels that are welded together. @autometaldirect Sheet metal has great E-Coat primer, why not keep it on the panel? This is also a great milestone in the Garbage Camaro restoration, where we actually weld something back in to the car! trunk floor ...

Get The Perfect Fit!: Tips For Installing Aftermarket Panels
มุมมอง 41K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Have you ever been frustrated that new panels don't fit an old car? I've been in this game a long time and there are better companies than others, but at some point you can't just expect the panels to fit themselves to your project... it takes work! My vintage WALKER 3 ton floor jack looks amazing! I don't want to mess up the character and cool patina, but I do want to service it and lock in the heritage and nostalgia that I see when I look at it. Crazy Wide Tires On Garbage Camaro - No Mini Tubs Needed!
มุมมอง 50K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Mini Tubs create alot more tire clearance!! They also create alot more work to follow up with that clearance. I want the option to stick with leaf springs on this car, no major surgery, and run the widest possible tire without doing major surgery! using my @autometaldirect parts makes the whole thing easier, but there's still some trimming to do. I was able to safely run a 315/30/18 rear tire o...

For me, a custom roll-pan on the back of a truck is a cool custom touch! They look fine just bolted in, but truly custom when welded in... @ViceGripGarage wanted it smoothed as well, so here we are! W WORK I IN P PROCESS
I ordered some 68-69 Chevy II Nova fenders from AMD they were $345 each plus $150 Freight charges $840 total for two fenders
It is a Vice Grip approved custom "I'm lookin right at it" dust spreader.
I'm glad you decided to fix the fender. Some of us guys have more time than money.
let me guess you are going to use the imitation fenders what a sheet metal worker you are you are not
I think that same bondo artist had a hand on my 68 Firebird 😂. I've found a knotted wire wheel makes short work of thick mud removal...and you can get into the creases without removing metal.
how about the "Suck-o-matic 5000"
My goodness👏👏👏👏I'm so impressed with the work and dedication because I of taken the easy route and just buy the fender😊 but you my friend, have showed me a masterpiece because this is not easy work😮 awesome, no words👏👏👏👏👏
😂😅 you got helmet hair.😅😂 thanks mate 👍
Absolutely do!!! Like a badge of honor! Lol!
Wow! Great job Kevin! You saved the original factory sheet metal fenders!👍
Another Saturday spent watching someone work their A$$ off while I sit and watch while drinking coffee. Thank you for the entertainment and your devotion to the project and your fans.
Love your insight on this project
Nice work.
Looking forward to seeing the car finished 😊
My first bondo work, had 2 gallons of bondo, nice and smooth, spray painted to match the burgundy wood grain 1977 Dodge Monaco Station Wagon! Going around a bumpy corner the whole thing fell off since I didn't know about the worm holes... :) The sound of "Phwap" still echos over the cassette playing Boston.... :)
I'm sure that broke your heart, but to hear the story it's kind of hilarious! We all have our moments, trust me! :-)
@paintucation sold the car for $50, since the rear leaf spring perch rotted out and cut through the fuel line... :)
Keep it coming!! I'm doing metal work and patches on my 73 Firebird. Got the underneath done so far. Now I'm working on the firewall. Welding in a patch to seal the firewall so I can run the Vintage Air A/C system.
Body guys doing that kind of half-a$$ crap make the good ones look bad. And tons more work for those following it. I feel your pain. Doing a customer repair or restore in a shop, you are already invested hours of sanding. Hours in shop time cost you and the customer money. As you say, time cost vs. replacement cost matters. Egos don't pay the bills and cost your profit margin. If you're the shop manager and the body tech with that fender asked you how to proceed, what ya gonna tell him? Then take that as your direction. For a class panel demo, it makes sense. Or if you can't afford to replace it on your own project in a home garage, then it is hours don't cost a thing but your time. So do what yard gotta do. 😀
I agree with you, sometimes you just gotta' get er done!
Never heard paint jobs referred to as birthdays but that's hilarious!😂
Hillbilly dust sucker
Sure liked that red 😢
Strip it down naked, make sure it's what you expect. Advice for life.
Was it the taco or the adult beverage ?
Are you Drinking a lot?
Great video! These are wonderful techniques for anyone who doesn't have the aftermarket support. In a lot of cases, you've got no choice BUT to save what you've already got. Great job Kevin! I've really been enjoying your channel and always look forward to watching. 🙂👍
For a home repair guy this is helpful. I’m not on the clock for my own project so my time is free……replacement panels are not!
Tetz Evacuation Debris System . Birdy
The Anteater 3500 Dust Extraction System.
I'm curious Kevin why you didn't use the SCT (surface conditioning tool) from Eastwood?
That there home made device is called "THE EXTRACTOR"!!😂
A fellow Canadian, who goes by Fitzee's Fabrication (Tony), that I have subed to, has some good technics on repairing sheetmetal as well. This is all learning for me, with a thousand and one ways to skin a cat.
My coworker does this same kinda thing with the vacuum. But puts it threw a cardboard box under where you are working to help catch the dust. Works well.
The suc-o-matic
If nothing else, it’s great practice… not everything can be as easily replaced or purchased new. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge, enjoy your work!
It's good you showed how to repair wrecked sheet metal. It's easy to buy a new part and move on, but there's so many diy guys out there working on less expensive but more obscure classics, and often there's little to no aftermarket available. Oe fits usually fits better anyway. Great video 👍
How many here would have the patience this guy has? Not me! This is impressive!
YES! I was asking for some front fender episodes a couple weeks back! Can't wait until you get to final fitment on them, those are the tips I need!
Well, I see you write backwards just like me. That explains a lot. Lefties are perfectnest. That's why it seems to cost me so much time to repair people's automobiles. I understand you now!
I'm not even remotely a body guy but I'm curious if you ever use sand bag backers or other materials when hand working metal back into submission?
O.k. informative, but that cost way more in time and material cost than a set for 300. Now if you can't get the parts your project needs that's how you do it. Thanks Kevin
I would of changed the fender to new lol. Your better than me though.
Where is Derek's truck did u finish it ? Want to see how it turned out.
I've been making good progress on it, there's a new video coming up very soon wearing you can catch up.
Dust sucker 9000... Why not a shrinking disc and a torch to bring the wave back down?
The crazy thing to me is back when they did this I was buying good fenders for $35 at the yards. Work smarter not harder my friend.
Absolutely! Still want to challenge myself every once in a while though. :-) thanks for watching. :-)
@@paintucation I understand totally I've had people walk in on me when working and they be like can't you just buy a new one , and I'd say yes I could 😂 but this is an original piece and it will fit perfect like it did new unlike so many aftermarket products.
Great video . My thought this week (sorry) what do you think about us guys lacking your hammer and dolly expertise buying one of those eBay fenders that famously never fit but using them for patch panels. Say replacing that wheel arch or the body line ? Why does nobody braze anymore? Wouldn’t it warp the steel less ? Is it hard to paint ? Yes I’m old , yes I’ve brazed , yes it was over 30 years ago . Keep up the great work !
To be honest, I never thought about buying one of the super cheap vendors just using it for patches. That's actually a really good idea!
@ my Dad would tell my brothers and me “ a broken clock is right twice a day “ . A statement lost on my grandsons because they think all clocks are digital. Lol
I would have gotten the passenger side fender replaced, for a DIY that is good on sheetmetal repair it might make sense to fix it but to pay a shop to redo that fender doesn't make any sense (I guess if you have a car that is all original sheet metal maybe)
Since we are talking metal repair, do you know of a place to get new rocker panels for an 03 mustang? My pinch weld strip is crushed as well as the area behind it. On a cobra the side skirts are attached to the pinch strip so I would love to get them back in shape. Any ideas.
Bondo Sucker 3000
Hey Im loving the content and hope to apply what im learning to my own build someday. Also not sure if you've picked a color yet but i keep picturing it in blue for some reason lol any way just food for thought
This is now Sheet-Metal-Ucation. This is stuff we don't usually get to see. Thank you so much for bringing this part of it to us. The metal forming stuff is an art.
