Does the Porsche 718 Cayman Sound Good?! | YES or NO

  • Hi Guys and welcome back to the channel...
This video is all about how the Porsche 718 Cayman sounds! The base 718 Cayman featured in this video is powered by a 2.0 Litre, 4 cylinder turbo charged engine producing roughly 300bhp and does not have a Porsche Sports exhaust. It is known that the 718 cayman, with it's smaller capacity turbo charged engine, doesn't sound quite as good as the previous generation 981 Cayman.
With that, I want to see what you guys think of this car...
Does the Porsche 718 Cayman sound good?!
Throughout the video I talk about the crackles and pops from the exhaust, the high rev'ing engine, the loudness of the exhaust, and how the lack of a petrol particulate filter helps with the argument that this car does sound good.
Don't forget to comment below YES or NO depending on what you guys think.
Oh, and whilst you're here, please like the video so others can find it and please subscribe to the channel! I am so close to 1,000 subscribers and it would be awesome to see more of you enjoying my channel.
Stay tuned for more videos to come but for now, I'll see you soon.

Anyone claiming to be a "Porsche purist" who bellyaches about the 718's exhaust note is clearly not old enough to remember when EVERY air-cooled Porsche had a distinct boxer rumble. To me it sounds like a nod to Porsche's heritage and I absolutely love it. And I don't understand how everyone carries on about the flat six having such a sonorous exhaust note like a Siren song and blah blah blah. No it doesn't -- it sounds like an industrial sewing machine stitching parachute panels together. I'd take a 718 over a 98x any day just for the exhaust note alone.

I think the 4 cylinder sounds better than the 6 for 90% of the time. I had a 981 2.7 Boxster and while it did sound fantastic when it was being hammered, most of the time you couldn’t hear it in normal driving. I went for a test drive in the 718 Boxster shortly after they came out and the noise was quite addictive even at normal speeds, and going home from the dealer my own car seemed too quiet and boring. Shortly after this all the hate started on the 718 but despite this I eventually swapped over to a Boxster 718S and haven’t regretted it. I find it wearisome to hear the same disparaging comments being made almost word for word about the sound of the 4 cyl 718 and it just shows that the reviewers all just seem to jump on the bandwagon rather than appreciating the car for what it is. I don’t care what anyone says, the 982 to me is a better car overall than the 981 in most respects, it is significantly faster than the previous model and handles better. Thanks for the review 👍

Only milk and juice comes in 2 litre and nowadays almost every car and average hot hatch has a 2 litre and turbo which you don't want it in your Porsche. For me it is either 718 4.0 GTS or 981 S or GTS or GT4 if could afford. The sound of this turbocharged does nothing in the tunnel after living with some good sounding cars including the F Type V6S.

      @@borinvlogs so you're a engine displacement...fan?
wait wait... "718 4.0 GTS or 981 S or GTS or GT4 if could afford" ?
it obvious that if someone can afford the better car ..he will get the better car ;-) sound and displacement have nothing to do with choosing what car to buy, only your budget and the specs you like.
so you have an F Type V6S ? well that car sounds fantastic! now you're "hooked" to good sounding cars, you better maintain that car as good as posible..because you will have a hard time replacing it in the future ;-)

I'm actually trying to decide between the 981 and 718 cayman. F6 VS F4 Turbo.
F6 does sound good...but like you said, when you're pushing it at the higher rpm band. For street driving, that's not often your pushing the Rev range. The 718 is more usable, even at the lower Rev ranges, plus has that mean gurgle...I think they are awesome. It's a developed taste...you really have to look past the motor change, and see the car for what it is and what it can do. 981 is a fatter car than the 718. 718 is literally 987 and 981 perfected together. Porsche is a genius for how the brought and built these cars up.

Loved the video, good to watch. I've just bought a 2018 Cayman GTS. On the test drive it sounded amazing, start up was loud in normal mode. as fairly cold, it quietened down a little when up to temperature but in Sport mode seemed a lot louder. thanks for a great video. Honestly I’m not much for crackles and pops in a car. i prefer a more clean and involving sound. i don’t think any video can truely capture the real sound of a car. the bottom line to judge if a car sounds good or not is if the car exhaust sound adds to your driving experience just like a movie soundtrack gets you more emotionally involved with the best bits in a movie. if the car sound can deliver the same experience. then it sounds perfect. coming from a 981 boxster, that is exactly what it does to my soul when i drive it. If the 718 does stir your soul with its sound track coupled with its drive, then no one else’s opinion matters. enjoy your car!

@@LifeInMotionuk Definitely, I never chose sport exhaust when I bought the car. After hearing other 718 with sport exhaust I went back to the dealer and spent extra to fit the original exhaust systems. It sounds a lot different. It will give you some pops when you rev 4500-5000 rpm and release the accelerator, there you hear it clearly. Alternatively, when you drive at about 50km/h in second gear, you manually switch to gear1, you gonna hear some machine gun shoots, haha. Ive no problem with my 718 exhaust. The car goes like a missile and making loads of noise just gets other drivers backs up. Were entering an era of no noise from cars, id rather blend in a bit and be less conspicuous

I think it sounds quite good for a 4 cylinder engine. Pretty cool car, those who criticize this I hope they are all driving at least 6 cylinder porsches not some vw tdi.

  • @verde629

People seem to forget that the flat six is a 911 thing. Cayennes and Macans don’t use flat 6 engines. Changing the name to 718 and having a flat4 turbo gave the cayman its own identity instead of being the “poor man’s 911”

More snap, crackle and pop than a box of Rice Krispies!
I think the Cayman is loud/sounds good but then l would say that as l own one that's the twin of yours.

A disclaimer is that I have never heard the flat 6, however my last car was a M5 F10, I have had a RX8, MR2, etc and I think my 718 base Cayman with a standard exhaust is the best sounding car I have ever had. People always compliment me on the sound of the car.
Due to the negative comments I was reading last year on the sound I almost went for a 981 but I am really glad, in the end I went for the 718.

I don't think loud = good 😄 And I guess many people don't like the fake pops and bangs. So it's good, they're not always there 🙈 I do think the 718 sounds good though. I like the mechanical sound to it and the turbo whistle. But it won't beat the NA flat 6 of course.

Naw, the flat 6 is miles better in sound. Sounds like an old car i had back in the 70s that had a bad muffler and a plug misfiring. flat 6 revs to 7800 rpm. 6 cyl crackles and pops.

Can’t argue with the performance delivered by the F4 or the incremental improvement in handling and steering over the 981 but the F6 gives the 981 character and soul in another league. The quality of sound of the F6 can’t be touched by the F4 in the 718. The F4 isn’t a characterful engine. It’s literally as described in the video. Just noise. Load noise. Personally I couldn’t live with it. I’ve had a few 718 Boxsters and Caymans loaners when my 981 Cayman S have been in the OPC for service/MOT. I’ve had a few over a weekend so it’s not like I’ve driven them to and from the office and they sat in the carpark all day. Great cars but F4 leaves soul and drama on the table.

Sound is relative to what you're comparing it to. If its the 981, then it sounds pretty weak. Ultimately, 4 pot dont belong in sports cars IMO.

  • @Encourageable

Ugly design imo. . Been ugly since it was designed back in the 90’s . Why anyone would buy this model. 928 944 and now the 718. Bad design. 911 has been around since 1964. But people still buy the thing. I got nothing from this video.
