I work for cci. To elaborate, vista outdoor is the parent company of federal, cci, and now remington and hevi-shot ammo. They also are the parent company of many other brands. The ammo you see with the strange crimp marks is from another plant that uses a different crimping process. There are many similarities but the main one to consider is that the 'old' cci way is done more by hand and the 'new' way is nearly fully automated. Both go through the same quality control testing and should perform to the high standard of cci. There are ammo products outsourced to and from cci and vista outdoor, however.
I think I have only ever fired a box of blazer once, when I was testing out different rounds for a charter arms ar-7 which really doesn't like shooting. From what I remember they were decent. I like the plastic holder in the new box more than the old one though. Interesting video.
It is Sunday today, bored, so I did some searching on .22 Blazer ammo. What I have found is that if the lot # starts with a number it is Federal. If it starts with a letter it is CCI. Also, the bullets are different colors, one is black/grey, and the other is light grey...just can't remember which is which...old man's brain kind of foggy these days...lol Thanks for the video.
I enjoy the black tips on the Blazers, they chamber smoothly and smooth loading via the magazines through the Ruger American rimfire. The mini mags are not as well coated. The American Eagles are good as are the Federal Gamshock. Thank you
A fellow had 5000 round cases of these twenty miles away. He was selling as a full case of ten 500 round bricks. or by the box at $30.00 a brick. It is the rev. "D". He also delivered for free. After the two gun shows I've attended recently, I could only allow my self to buy three. My .22's over the past 50 years, have all been of the Cooey variety, but a few months ago I decided to get my first semi. I decided on the unusual. A GSG STG44. I've had jamming and misfeeding from other brands of so called high velocity, so I'm looking forward to trying these out. I actually spotted your video before buying, for a review. Thanks for the info!
Interesting. I have never been a big fan of CCI Blazer. I get too much leading from them. To me it isn't worth the cleaning hassle. Now that I think about it, I wonder if some of the boxes I got in the past were actually Federal rounds instead. I guess there is no way to know for sure. I just stick with copper washed .22's now. The price isn't that much different really. I don't know why some people strive to save every fractional cent they can on .22's. In the end it sometimes isn't worth it.
Interesting that I came across this video. I've been testing out the American Eagle and Blazer 22lr with my Ruger 10/22. I've been having stove piping with the AE and no issues with the Blazer. Both are same price, so i'll continue using the the Blazer
I like blazers so much about 3 years ago I bought a case of 5000, I still have most of a brick of older I bought in about 2013-2014 the boxes are different I hope the newer ones are good as the older
I just purchased a brick of the Blazer 22LR, 500rds. After watching your video, I looked for the revision letter on the box. Interestingly the large outside box was labeled Rev D, but all of the smaller boxes inside were labeled Rev C! The large box was the flip open type, not the tear open style.
Fred Zielinski I've heard some folks say that the "Rev C" & "Rev D" markings are just versions of the box/artwork and may have nothing to do with the contents. I guess only the folks at CCI/Federal know for sure.
I use only hollow points. I have used these Blazer full lead bullets before but you can't always tell if you hit the Prairie dogs because the full lead bullets just go through and you can see them strike the ground and don't know if you may have missed. Where as the hollow points give a definite pop to them so you know when you have hit a prairie dog.
Ive been doing a lot of research on different kinds of 22lr, like plated vs LRN, as well as premium vs bulk and what makes them all different. I plan on stocking up before the next election, and while I have a little money my funds aren't unlimited. Nevertheless I must take quality as well as quantity into consideration. The consensus is that as far as bulk brick ammo Is concerned the Blazer stuff is the best. I have read that plated ammo is more accurate and will produce less fouling in standard mass produced rifles. There Is plated ammo available at a similar price, but it isn't nearly as universally respected in the reliability department as the Blazer, and it's all hollow point as well which I don't like for small game hunting. I don't have the money to buy 5,000 round cases of more premium offerings. Im not sure which route to go, but I need to make my mind up soon. Have you had any excess fouling issues or degradation of accuracy using bare lead 22lr?
I've only ever experienced excessive fouling with one rifle and non plated bullets. It was with the Remington Nylon 66, nothing else seemed prone to the fouling. The accuracy got poor when it got fouled. I would suggest you buy and test a quantity of Blazer in your particular .22's, it might be fine in your guns.
Intresting. I have a few of bolth boxes. 500 and 525. I didn't know there was a shortage in Canada. I just saw a bunch in walmart, but the cheaper junk they sell.
I hate to tell you this guys but the zipper type box cci blazer 22 ammo does not cycle problem child auto's (Sig Mosquito) reliably like the flap opening clear tray box does. Not sure of the powder charge change or difference in the powder itself but its not as good.
314299 Shooting Channel My experience with the two different types of Blazer 22 ammo is from our range usage guns at our store. The Sig Mosquito seams to only like the clear tray Blazer and the stand alone milky white tray Blazer will not cycle the slide reliably with that ammo. Also our short barrel Walther P-22 has issues with it as well. It might be just a pistol thing and not in a longer bbl guns like rifles. Our long 5" bbl Walter p-22 it works Ok in
the Wall Mart Federal White and black box 22 ammo 325 bulk pack works quite well in Problem child guns as I call them. It actually says on the box "Auto Match", so the powder recipe must be specially designed for auto weapons. 22's can be such a pain in finding out what ammo works well in a particular gun. What works well in one gun won't work in another. Its nice to have info like this spread around on the web so people can find ammo that will shot in their guns that will work and not cost them a bundle like cci stinger/ mini mag does.
My Smith and Wesson 22a1 loves CCI, Remington and Federal, but gets the hiccups with Aguila and chokes on Winchester. So I tried all the same brands in my Phoenix HP22 with just about the same results.
Federal has been making them for years. I have some boxes with both headstamps. Those you have with the GOOD priming compound are just Federal using up CCI left over cases, but using same powder and bullet as the regular Federals. I have found the CCI loaded ammo to be more accurate than the Federals. Hard to find the REAL CCI Blazers anymore.
Supply is good as of now: as of OCT 2018 PSA has it on sale for $16.99 and free shipping if you buy 5 bricks, plus if you are out of their state, there is no sales tax!
I have some boxes that are revision B. They are close to 10 yrs old. They have the federal style bullet and white trays. I also have some that are 20+ yrs old that have the cci style bullet that are loose packed in 50 rd boxes.
I contacted Advantage Arms regarding my .22 glock conversion. they recommended using the CCI head stamped (darker) rounds over the Federal head stamped rounds....Considered to be much more reliable...
Just bought some CCI 22 Rimfire Magnum ammo and it said on the box that CCI was. Registered trademark of Federal Cartridge Co. don’t know what that means, just passing on what I’ve seen.
Talked to a salesman at gander mountain, asked if they had any .22lr. He said oh you have to get here at 7 in the morning. I said hoarder's buying it all up, he said Pretty much, that is just ridiculous. And he said they did sell it at the regular price.
If i'm not mistaken ATK owns CCI, Blazer, and Federal. So it makes sense that they might farm it out to other subsidiaries under the same umbrella corp.
They own Estate too forgot about that. Don't see much of it though got some 12 gauge really cheap at Academy not long ago was like $4.50 a box for #7 I have seen 9mm and .45ACP before but not that common.

If what you say is true then you're getting a better deal because even though it comes in a plain ass box, Federals' American Eagle .22LR is the best bulk .22 ammo out there bar none. Federal Ammo Co. is just a damned good company, they're the best in their market.
Back in OCT 2021, I ordered direct from CCi website a box of 500 Stand Velocity 40 grain LRN (packaged 10 bricks of 50 rounds each). The exterior of the main box and of each brick were stamped with: CCi/ SPEER OPERATIONS LEWISTON ID 83501 U.S.A. i stopped buying bulk .22LR because of the amount of james and missfiers i was getting every 6-15 rounds i would get a hang up or a failure to fire then one day i splurged on some CCI stingers and some mini mags and those crazy fast and light coppers and that was like 300 rounds of pure bliss not one time did it fail to feed, extract or fail to fire so now i just throw in an extra $30 on top of the $21 i would had spent on the feds and buy 300 rounds of stingers and 200 mini mags
@@314299 I haven't tried Blazers yet because I haven't found any place where they're sold in my area but those Stingers are amazing like phenomenal my 22 was made in 1952 and I don't get a single problem out of it when I'm using the stingers Federal bulk is what I normally use and I get okay results with that I mean like one failure to fire every 7 to 20 rounds is not good but it's way better than Winchester Super X those thing I was getting like every second or third shot wouldn't fire
Great info. So it's a hybrid of my favorite and what I've always considered to be the second worst. (I've seen a lot of badly deformed, loose fitting American Eagle junk, some of which didn't seem particularly safe.)
I've bought or been given it on a number of occassions. I had one birthday where everyone who came gave me .22lr and I had over 17K 22lr after that. I couldn't say how many boxes I got, but it was the brand out of that batch that had the most cycling problems. I'd frequently not rough and smooth textures from different projectiles in the same box too. The defect that really bothered me was in some loose packed .22lr- a bout 3 out of a ~500 pack had cartridge shaped dents in the brass almost half their diameter. Since I got to take a broad survey of available .22lr and had those experiences, I haven't bought any American Eagle since around 1998. Maybe it's improved since then, but I haven't had the motivation to find out. I gather some of their .223/556 is actually overrun government contract ammo, and that's probably good stuff.
GunFun ZS I've fired a couple thousand American Eagle over the last few years and had no issues with it so perhaps they fixed the problems you encountered back them. In the 1990's I shot mostly Winchester .22 ammo but the quality went down hill on a lot (but not all) of it. Current production Federal .22 ammo is good stuff in my experience.
A lot of people say that, re the federal branded ammo. The federal high velicity target ammo seems to be a bit weaker than other high velocity, so my guns don't like it as much. It's still good ammo though. I did recently shoot a skinny HP profile Am Eagle box someone gave me through my extra picky 2206 TGT and it ran great. That gun is the fussiest. So far for more common bulk pack .22lr my ranking from best to worst is something like this: CCI blazer, Winchester wildcat or super x, Remington Thunderbolt, Federal Bulk, Rem Peters, Aguila (Eley Prime) Super Extra, Then stuff that is only last resort for me. Loose pack stuff tends to be worse. i.e. Rem golden bullet is pretty poor stuff, with lots of duds. American Eagle was at the bottom of this pile, but I'll be keeping an open mind. I did penetration tests on dry phone book with all of the above, except the aguila, + a few pricier CCI products. There was remarkably little variation from one shot to the next. pretty much all of them punched in consistently 11" at about 100 yards, and 9mm 155 grain bulk ammo did about 9" in the same medium. I've seen subsequent tests in gels of varying density and through a variety of barrel lengths which showed significant differences between different brands and designs, that did not show up at all with my crude testing. (ps. Sorry for using imperial units. I look forward to the day when we finally move over to S.I.)
+314299 Shooting Channel good for my purposes, i am now having the luxury of wading through accurate at a good price from just buying anything. Most of the time buying the good stuff from a big box for free drop shipment
@@314299 No I know there hasn't been a 7 year shortage I just thought it was ironic that I found your video during yet another ammo shortage albeit 7 years later.
ATK owns Federal, CCI, Blazer, Lawmen, Speer, Independence, and I heard they just bought Savage Arms might have more I don't know of off the top of my head. I know they load Lake City too. Freedom Group is looking to sell some of their holdings might be looking at that I know Ruger and S&W been looking into Bushmaster and some of their other companies think they been talking about selling.
You should really try a box of 40gr CCI Mini-Mags. I think they are about 1200-1250 fps. They are not cheap but if you are using a bolt action or single shot the price is not so bad. These group very well at 75 yards with my 1940's Remington single shot. Just my 2 cents.
not since Feb 2015. the sporting division was spun off into its own company called Vista Outdoor while at the same time ATK merged with Orbital to become Orbital ATK.
Hi all....summers nearly gone now and it's time to get out without frying. I just wanted to say that both Federal and CCI are owned by the same company.....cool eh?
You must be in Australia. Yes, CCI and Federal were/are owned by the same company, the point of the video is that products from the Federal plant were being marked as though they came out of the CCI plant. While both quality products it is generally accepted that stuff made in the CCI plant is the better of the two.
@@314299 Good guess! Ammo prices here are shocking, and supply is crazy. We are not able to get any sp primers or propellant for pistol loads, and that includes shotty rounds. So if you see any send it over this way....legally of course.
The priming is what is important. More than likely it is a batch of projectiles that cci purchased from federal to make their blazers. Who is to say that cci just subed out the job to fed? If i were cci i would not do that. I think its cci made using federal projectiles. Shortages you know
+314299 Shooting Channel ok i totally fucked up on this... its made in the EU its actually made in the US but written in french.... i thought E.U stand for europeen union lol but i'm wrong
Here's the "problem": Generally speaking Federal rimfire ammo is of "good" quality, but CCI ammo is of "better" quality. So putting product made in a plant noted for "good" in a box that makes people think it was made in the facility noted for "better" quality facility strikes me as trying to deceive the consumer.
You are wrong. Federal bought CCI. However the point of the video is that they have different factories and the products of different factories are not identical.
I found Blazers to be the worst 22 round i have ever tried.I bought 500x couple years back as a cheap plinking round to use in my CZ511,but they just wouldnt cycle properly. Those that did cycle were not accurate even at short distances so i ended up giving the whole lot away to a friend. However,he really rates them in his Norinco K98 so just shows whats right for one rifle might not be for another. My CZ511 (which i know you have too) is very accurate with both Winchester and Eley subsonics.
I am not going to disagree with you. I just think a manufacturer would not sub out the total production of ammo like this. Otherwise why even put the blazer name on the box? I trusted cci, never had good luck with federal. So now i guess i will not buy either one. I'll stick to winchester, or Rem.
its guys like you sir that make it hard for the average non hording person to shoot his or hers 22long gun. instead of just buying one box you had to buy more. people wonder why we have a shortage of 22lr.
+Tony Trombley That's pretty funny, having four bricks of .22 ammo makes me a "hoarder"? I dont think so, I'm a consumer. I generally get my dealer to order a case (ten bricks) for me, that does me for a summer. This is not something new, I've been doing that for years. I'm not one of those guys buying and selling 22 ammo, I buy it and use it. I also will not pay inflated prices. Sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting ammo, but my buying patterns are no different now than they have been for 20 years.

Great info. So it's a hybrid of my favorite and what I've always considered to be the second worst. (I've seen a lot of badly deformed, loose fitting American Eagle junk, some of which didn't seem particularly safe.)
I've never had any issues with the American Eagle that I've used, perhaps you got a bad lot?

I've fired a couple thousand American Eagle over the last few years and had no issues with it so perhaps they fixed the problems you encountered back them.
I look forward to the day when we finally move over to S.I.)
thanks, I appreciate the report.
You are welcome. How is .22 ammo availability in your area?
+314299 Shooting Channel good for my purposes, i am now having the luxury of wading through accurate at a good price from just buying anything. Most of the time buying the good stuff from a big box for free drop shipment
Well it's 2020 and 22lr along with every other caliber is still hard to find.
Hopefully most people stocked up the last time it was plentiful, it's not been a shortage all the time from 2013 to 2020.
@@314299 No I know there hasn't been a 7 year shortage I just thought it was ironic that I found your video during yet another ammo shortage albeit 7 years later.
very interesting. How do you know that Federal is loading the new blazers? does it say on the package?
i 100% back your opinion!!! i have thrown at least 10,000 rounds down range. very reliable! especially through semi autos! i posted a video response!
No shortage around here either, crappy tire, wally world and the coop have plenty.
Boy have I got tons of that stuff!
great round...
Too bad no one seems to have them in stock for sale at the moment.
@@314299 Gunbroker.com has them
You should really try a box of 40gr CCI Mini-Mags. I think they are about 1200-1250 fps. They are not cheap but if you are using a bolt action or single shot the price is not so bad. These group very well at 75 yards with my 1940's Remington single shot. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks... But its August and still no 22LR at reasonable pricing...So we'll write off the summer of 2013 to the crazy's....
CCI and Federal are both divisions of ATK.
not since Feb 2015. the sporting division was spun off into its own company called Vista Outdoor while at the same time ATK merged with Orbital to become Orbital ATK.
Shortages you know
The new type of blazer are produced in Europe and "Made in the US" more like assembled in the US
+Inthedarkzone01 I've never heard that before. What is your source for that information?
+314299 Shooting Channel
its written on the box in french i saw it at 2:20 on the video there is written "Fabriquer aux E.U." produced in the E.U.
+314299 Shooting Channel ok i totally fucked up on this... its made in the EU its actually made in the US but written in french.... i thought E.U stand for europeen union lol but i'm wrong
+Inthedarkzone01 Fair enough.
Both are reliable companies.I don't know what your problem is
Here's the "problem": Generally speaking Federal rimfire ammo is of "good" quality, but CCI ammo is of "better" quality. So putting product made in a plant noted for "good" in a box that makes people think it was made in the facility noted for "better" quality facility strikes me as trying to deceive the consumer.
Do know that CCI BOUGHT FED 10 to15 yrs ago CCI &. BLAZER OWEN FED
I love cal. 22 lr
Most shooters do.
Federal and CCI are both owned by ATK Companies.
interesting...
Just brought 4 bricks for $40/brick because it was a good price XD
as of OCT 2018 PSA has it on sale for $16.99 and free shipping if you buy 5 bricks, plus I'm outa state so no sales tax!
You probably already know but ATK owns Federal, CCI, Blazer and Spear.
I had some miss fires with it
What gun were you shooting it in?
CCI 👍💪
CCI makes good 22 ammo.
Where can I find some .22LR?
Try some Orbea import .22lr and Exakt(Russian made) .22lr
I don't know where I would find that as the import of most Russian ammo or guns has been banned here since 2015.
I am pretty sure, federal, cci, and blazer are all owned by the same company
Yes they are, however not all the products are made in one factory.
vistaoutdoor.com/brands/
Tried like ten diff kinds and this is the only ammo my .22 likes for some reason
Ammo box review?😂
Sort of...
Federal and CCI are much better choices than Winchester and Remington which have become pure crap.
I love this stuff P22Q eats em
It's been good reliable ammo in my experience.
Blazer don't work good in semi autos. Cci are the best I have found.
its guys like you sir that make it hard for the average non hording person to shoot his or hers 22long gun. instead of just buying one box you had to buy more. people wonder why we have a shortage of 22lr.
