    At 4:50 I said that the reading of 1016 was probably erroneous. I'm wearing earplugs and I couldn't hear the obvious lack of power. That round was almost certainly defective. It has been suggested that some other type of ammo got mixed up with the mini mags. In this case the types of ammo I was using look very different and it would have been obvious when I was loading the mag so no, that didn't happen. So that shot was taken out of the computation for mean velocity, but it might tell us something about quality control.

      @davidjones4201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @OWEN FLORENCE Most of the sound is the propellant in the cartridge combusting to launch the projectile. The underpowered round had less powder going off.

      In my experience shooting Mini Mags, I get one weak round out of every 60 to 70 rounds. So when you mentioned Mini Mags, the first thing that came to mind was "Is he going to get one?"

  • @jvmccracken
    @jvmccracken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +558

    Having worked at CCI, there is no production difference between Green Tag and Standard Velocity 22lr. The difference is determined by quality control statistics. Samples are taken continuously of all production ammo. The samples are fired under QA department controls. If specifications drift away from quality standards production stops until adjustments are made. Some production lots show exceptional accuracy and those could be designated Green Tag. So it’s the same round, but a statistically superior batch.

    • @jvmccracken
      @jvmccracken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      Oh, I said above that a superior lot of 22lr “could be” labelled Green Tag. Only if the Sales department has orders for Green Tag. If they don’t, that straight A ammo will be labelled Standard Velocity just like the rest.

      My experience exactly!! I've even taken CCI SV and weighed each round, separating them out by weight to use in matches. (I achieved a High Master rating doing this) Cheaper than GT that way and the accuracy in my guns was equal to the GT that I tested numerous times. Depending upon the level of accuracy desired, the SV works great in most guns. Each gun is ammo sensitive and may not shoot the same ammo as others in your collection. Best bet is to buy all the different types of 22 ammo available at the time and test in your own gun(s) to determine which is the most accurate for your purposes. Nearly all of it will maintain "minute of squirrel", but for competition shooting, go with the most accurate (if you can find it!)!

      Thanks for the information! I was told that part of what makes match grade ammo is that the likely hood of duds, like the minimag that was well slower than the others was much lower which sort of jives with your explanation.

    Glad to see this video, Paul; thank you. A tangential comment follows:
    My first rifle was a Remington Rolling Block in .22. It was a great single shot: utterly safe and reliable, and quite accurate for a kid in his pre-teen years. But, when I was fourteen, I graduated to a Marlin Model 50. It was just superb, I had so much fun plinking with it, shooting cans and pine cones, often appear targets and occasionally vermin around an old farmstead in Vermont. Many years later - upon returning from an 18 month assignment in the Pacific - I learned that my mother (in one of necessary, periodic cleaning binges) had given that Marlin away to our church’s Scout troop. I miss it to today, it was a great lever action pinker. .

    25 years ago I bought an early S&W Model 41 in well used condition. After some stoning of a peened -over bit of metal on the edge of the bolt, the initial case ejection problem and failure to go into battery issues were corrected. At that time I used CCI standard velocity exclusively for a couple years with very good performance in accuracy and with consistent cycling. Then I had kids and a business career and my model 41 sat idle for 25 years. Hoping to have some fun, I joined a bullseye club and bought a fresh brick of CCI standard. At the range I found that the pistol would not shoot five rounds without an ejection “stovepipe”. I tried cleaning & lighter oil, changed to milder ambient temps, adjusted to a tighter grip, tried different mags, installed a new bolt, a new firing pin and spring, a new volquartzen ejector, a new recoil spring, and finally a swanky new barrel. None of those things solved my problem. I assumed the pistol was old and too used but never once doubted my trusty CCI standard ammo. I was dejected. Then I heard that CCI had changed hands and manufacturing locations with less consistent controls on their lower end products. The source recommended CCI Green Tags as the “new” Standard velocity. Sure enough, $500 in parts, and hours of time later, it was the ammo change to Green Tag that solved the problem. It’s likely a problem that would have gone unnoticed in a bolt rifle, but consistency made the difference for cycling in my model 41. I can’t comment on accuracy yet, after fixing the cycling issue, I’m off shooting again due to other responsibilities. Will there ever be enough shooting time? Only if you are Paul Harrell !

    I've pulled a few dozen .22's apart of different manufacturers to examine and weigh the charges and found that most were VERY consistent...powder wise. You're only talking about a small amount of powder (1.5-2.0 grains IIRC) but where I saw a large difference was in the priming compound. Being rimfire they drop in the compound wet then spin the case to distribute it around the rim. One particular batch of Remington's was having a fair number of misfires that would fire on the second try striking a different part of the rim...and sure enough I found a few in the pulled ones where there was a gap in the compound. If you happen to hit the gap in the priming you have a dud that will fire when you reorient the case and actually hit the primer.
    Other cases from different lots showed marked differences in the amount and thickness of the priming. One particular 'good' batch that were consistent and seemed full powered had a thick consistent rim loaded with compound, while others that had misfires or 'weak' sounding reports had minimal compound and some with gaps. The 'weak' loads most likely are caused by the lack of priming compound not giving the powder a good lighting more so than the charge being dramatically different IMHO. And this is also the reason if you wanted to make a rimfire gun more reliable you'd think about double firing pins which would greatly increase your chances of hitting some compound.
    Ever wonder what a double-charged .22lr will do to a 10/22? I did that once just to see because the charges in that particular batch filled about half the case...so two went into one just to see what happened. It went BANG!! and actually kicked! Also the case head separated and took the extractor out with it and stuck it firmly into the nearby wall. Credit to Ruger...dug out the extractor and reinstalled and that gun was back in service. Don't recommend you doing something like that...really stupid...but it answered a question my young mind had.
