Back in the ‘60’s my older brother bought a 1946 Ford pickup. We did some body work and paint. The bed boards needed replacement and the wiring needed work. This truck had a flathead six and a four speed non- synchromesh transmission with a granny 1st gear. I learned a lot from that truck. That truck served well. It was simplicity on wheels. Those were the days.
@@bcgrittner8076 Those were the days of good life and simplicity unlike today's computer sensor module electronic battery hybrid plastic junk when something goes wrong nobody knows what it is and if someone does it's a arm and a leg to fix so ir'll be getting junked
This sucks because somewhere there is a person that knows exactly what is wrong with these transmissions and also knows exactly how to fix it but that would mean they would have to admit fault and loose some money actually fixing their failure. I'm so tired of these crooks sticking us with crap like this.
Hey Scotty, When Ford released the 10R80 the factory was underfilling them by up to 2+ qts. The complaint of the owner on this one is consistent with that underfill issue. Once these transmissions are properly filled and reset the shift tables they behave themselves. It took Ford nearly 2 years to figure out how much fluid to put in them at the factory and now the 21-22's are just fine with none of these issues. These transmissions will also adapt and pick up odd shifting behavior like when towing in regular mode, it causes them to have erratic shifts afterwards. Again clearing the shift tables and let the system re-learn for 250 miles almost always fixes it. I have had 2 Fords with the 10R80 (the 1st was underfilled by 2 qts with the same issues as your customer) The dealer topped it off and has been fine since. I know this transmission VERY well now.
I know it's only been a month since your post, but how's the truck doing? I just put my 2018 Ford, 5.0, 10speed in the dealership shop for this issue. They're overhauling the whole transmission for free. Do you think they've mostly fixed their errors? Hopefully I'm getting a new transmission with the kinks straightened out.
So how would i tell my service center this so they do it for free? My 18 has the exact same issue. they even did the programmable control module to I guess i remember a recall for it or something similar.
Blame the EPA for ridiculous regulations that force these automakers to make such ridiculous components like a 10 speed transmission. A 10 speed transmission belongs in a semi, not a passenger vehicle!
My 2020 does that. What I learned is never drive it with the transmission until 80F. Then don't run it hard until it's fully heated up. Mine is manly between 3rd and 4th gear.
When i bought my 19 f150 i got the basic v6 not ecoboost and 6 speed tranny. The truck has been super reliable. The more features you have the more potential crap to breakdown.
I worked at a high performance transmission shop a while ago...i just pulled them out and installed while the owner did the actual repairs... its crazy how auto transmissions operate there is so many little pieces and rings that have to go in a certain way....i can only imagine how confusing this one is..... i only worked on simple aftermarket upgraded gm/race trans ...just pulled them and reinstalled after he worked his magic..... seeing him start take one apart and throwing things wherever because he knew exactly what parts were needed and where they go was truly amazing to me... I would never wanna take the time to learn all that shizz... being dirty and dealing with shitty custos all day but i guess you can make hella dough ...glad i got out of it ultimately but it was fascinating to see someone so in tune with their trade
I love mine. I have a 2020 F150 XLT 5.0L 4x4 with the 10 spd and 40k miles. I haven't had any issues at all out of mine. Love it. Edited: June 2024 73k miles now, still no issues.
I hear your point, and know you don't mean it this way, but when more and more consumers feel "value" or "happy" only at 40k, it's a sad reflection of current day automotive expectations.
Ford just replaced my 10 speed on a 2018. Erratic shifting hard shifts slipping. When the transmission torn apart it has a broken drum, clutch issues, valve body issues, planetary gears were broke. Took six weeks due to supply chain issues. I drive this gingerly and always have. 40k and still under power train warranty. It rolls easier and I’m getting 23mpg on the highway. I’m thinking the new trans was updated. It’s never shifted this smoothly. Was treated well at the dealer. Love the truck.
@@dr.floridaman4805 Ford sent me cash and free oil changes for the time it was in the shop. I’m pleased. At least they fixed it and tried to make it right.
Ford dealers is one of the reasons why I choose Ford over other car manufacturers. I've never been sketched out at a Ford dealership. My experience at the dodge dealership was terrible. I called and the technicians didn't even know what they can work on and what they can't work on. At the end of the day, car manufacturers need to make better transmissions.
My 22 F150 Supercrew has been great so far. In the first few thousand miles when it was new the 10 speed would occasionally clunk/shift hard from second gear to first when coming to a stop before the truck was warmed up. It has since smoothed out and everything has been good.
My 2018 has similar problems. Slips and bangs the worst between gears 8-10 while cruising 65-70 on the highway… also slips from a stop to go from time to time too. It has been in the local ford service department for 2 months now, and 3 weeks before I brought it there it was in the same shop for another month. They said the seals and wire harness are getting replaced. Seriously been thinking about trading in for a RAM
GM has transmission issues too. My mom had two fail in her 2018 Impala Edit: She was getting 10 to 11 MPG before the failures. The dealership tried to say it was her driving style causing it. Lol Now she gets 27 mpg with the new tranny
I have a 2020 F-250 with the 10R80 with absolutely no issues. I am also watching rebuild videos and I am going to cowboy up and learn how to fix the Ed something drum when it craps out 300 miles out of warranty. Thank you Ford. Oh by the way my only other new car was a 2007 F-150 5.4 Triton. In all honesty 100K miles with two batteries and that was it. Not the best resale though.
FWIW - I have found the transmission will hunt a lot when driving up hills at slow speeds. I have found the best thing is to just manually shift it into 3rd or 4th gear and keep it there. It won't hunt, and you will have available torque. The key is find the gear it is happy at, and keep it there.
I had a 97 f150, 4 speed automatic transmission with the 4.6. The transmission lines rusted out on the bottom (common here in the midwest) I just replaced those sections with transmission hose. That truck went 250000 miles and then it started misfiring. Due to the mileage on it I didn't fix it, I even found those transmission lines leaking again but absolutely no problems with the transmission. Got decent mileage too.
The editing in of Sol Goodman after Scotty says the owner hired a lawyer, was so perfect. Whoever edits these videos is worth every penny and then some.
No harsh shifts. It is a work truck. I drove it till it had 168k on it. They gave me a new work truck. My work still has it for a beater at the quarry. It’s still getting it.
@@jonmoss3204 so 168k on an original 10r80 with no maintenance? I know that’s not unheard of in many trannys but the 10r80 is just bad all around. My 2018 had its first one replaced at 59k. I don’t do burn outs, tug-o-wars etc etc. but thanks for keeping up with this post
My 2019 f150's transmission just started the shift problems a month ago. It has gotten worst quick, and now is pretty much undriveable . It's at the dealership atm and they're overhauling the main control valve body. My truck is at the 50k miles point and thankfully it's still under warranty . I should get it back in a week or so......fingers crossed that'll be fixed properly.
What was the verdict? I had my valve body rebuilt and then replaced. Still have the slip shift in 1-3,3-5 and now 7-8 when it’s cold and transmission temp is below 100F.
It would be nice if we still had the option to purchase a manual transmission, not only is it more reliable it makes you pay attention when your'e driving.
The transmission is probably getting confused, being spoilt for choice being that there are so many gears. Any auto box can dither under certain circumstances, it stands to reason that the more ratios that are available then the harder making a decision will be. I know if I was driving a ten speed manual then I'd have a hard time knowing which exact one to use lol.

I felt the sports mode increase the wear and tear of the transmission. I drove a Durango in “sports mode” and jerks around on when on low gears. Also shifting between Drive and reverse back and fort without making a full stop will wear the transmission much faster.
I have a similar truck used 2018, mine doesn't slip per se...but it does shift wonky on occasion when slowing down and lower gears. Another guy claimed on TH-cam this is just an artifact of the adaptive learning stuff. A dealer can turn it off or reset it. I drive it very lightly, never getting it above 2k rpm. I'll try the sport mode thing. My reasoning for 10 speed is there is more places for the wear and load to go...I guess time will tell if it wears out.
Wouldn't you know it, my 2019 F150 has pulled trailers and everything and the 10-speed trans has been perfect. Sounds to me like the shifting issue is more of programming than any sort of mechanical failure. Also some people (not saying your truck owner there, Scotty) have the idea that if the truck does not shift up through all 10 years, and skips say from 3 to 5, something is wrong. But the trans will skip a gear if it determines that the one in between is not needed. BTW Chevy I believe also uses this same transmission (mostly designed by Ford) and I'm not sure if the 6 speed is offered anymore except on the smallest lowest horsepower engines.
I have a 2019 F150 2.7L ECO 4X4 with the 10-speed transmission. Every vehicle has its own personality (aka quirks, etc). Unless it is actually broken, I just adjust my driving techniques. It's a truck. Not a race car.
I had the same exact problem with a Ford Fusion 2 liter AWD. Sport mode, no problem. Switch manually, no problem. Regular/Normal mode, weird. They “resetted” the software which fixed it for a little while. Very fishy.
I have the 2021 F150 Lariat, with the 3.5 Turbo. Changed the Transmission Fluid & Filter at 50,000 and it shifts perfectly and has loads of power! Love the truck!
I think it's 100% sensor/software computer issue. I don't understand Ford cuz this could be fixed pretty easily but they're spending thousands $$ having to rebuild these transimissions
My 18 has 65k miles no issues and i race it i did broke the transfer case tho launching in 4wd but it use to be funny but did an software update shifts good
My 2021 Mustang GT with 14,000 miles already has a torque converter problem. They wouldn’t tell me if the transmission is what caused it or not but probably.
My Poor Old Grandfather would be spinning in His Grave if He knew how expensive New Vehicles are now and what poor quality they are. He was a Ford Man. When My Mom was pretty young He got His leg Nearly Cut off in a Threashing Machine.
Have an ‘18 f-150 5.0. Two weeks after the time of the 5 year warranty, but with only 57k miles, it started banging gears and slipping in 4/7/9. 1st dealer trip, they reset the adaptive learning for $125 and didn’t do a test drive, so within 1/4 mile I knew it didn’t help. 2nd trip they said the valve body had to be replaced for $1600. After 5 days, they called to say it didn’t fix it at all, I still had to pay the bill, and that I need a new transmission. Ford corporate won’t touch it. First and last Ford I’ll own. At this point I just want to sell it without losing my butt
Saaaaame here. '18 F150 5.0, started getting clunky a month after i took it in for service, tried a couple things to fix it and sometimes it got better and otherwise just gradually got worse. Finally took it in 30 days after the 5 year warranty hoping they could do the reset and 2 days later they said they need to replace the whole transmission. Dropped $8k to replace it and it's great now. Wrote a nice letter to Ford Customer Service two months ago and got nothing. Guess I'll have to see if there are any new class actions, etc.
@@joelhawes7749 yep, same for me, except first they charged me $1400 to replace the valve body, and then told me that didn’t help. Should be picking it up today after this all started in April. Only going to cost me $9k and I just got it last year. I signed up for the class actions and am keeping receipts. Good times.
@@MotoNoir86 I really really like the 5.0 single cabs and was thinking of maybe selling my Tacoma and trying out the Ford but seems that transmission repairs on these new Trucks is actually quite common.
Yup, my 2021 F150 STX (2.7 10-speed) was almost the final truck off the Kansas line that year. The transmission produces all manner of vibration and shudder. Mainly when in 8, 9 or 10 gear at highway speeds. It behaves like the torque converter is bad. FORD has no solution . They have told me explicitly there's nothing to be done without it "coding". I'm stuck with this dud.
Scotty you make me 😂😅 so much! And I learn Too!!! I have 23 Ford Maverick with EcoBoost motor. It runs and runs perfectly after I bought it with 9K miles on it.
I think future trucks will have a turbocharged 1.6 liter engine with an 18 speed transmission & use 0W-5 motor oil that must be changed every 1,000 miles.
I got a 2016 Lariat supercab 5.0L with the 6R80... mine acts pretty much the same. If I put it in drive it acts like it's got an ignition issue. When I drive in manual I have no issues. However I have had constant alignment issues with it. I think it's the shackle hangers but the dealer acted like I was crazy. I do know that the f150s tranmission have an adaptive learning system that learns your driving style and causes the transmission to shift funny. Some say ti disconnect the battery and it will reset the adaptive learning. That is false, the transmission module has to be re flashed. Sport mode is meant for harsh shifting.
I've yet to hear of a recall or recent class action lawsuit on manual stick transmissions. Modern clutches last over 200,000mi and clutches like brake pads are a consumable part. Drive stick.
@@juubilo1509 FMC has had an automatic disaster every generation since the 70s...every time they try a radical new design it bites the customer. Taurus/Duratec hydromatic, Galaxy XLs, the CVT experiment in the Taurus SUV, the DCTs in the teens. Seems if they have a hydromatic that is solid and reliable they'd stick with it for as many vehicles as possible. However Scotty was praising these 10sp automatics 3 years ago....nothing like the stumble shifting of a DCT. The allure of new.
There are almost no manual transmissions offered. And that includes all of the half ton pickup trucks. You can't buy a stick anymore and haven't been able to for a while now.
@@townhall05446 you can buy a Toyota, Nissan, Jeep Gladiator or a Ranger with stick in 22. For automatics I'd choose one that has been in a car or truck platform for several years. Anything they develop brand new or buy off the shelf new and stick in their vehicles has a 50:50 chance of whoops.

I found the 10-speed wouldn't shift properly in real cold weather until the engine got up to temperature. It would literally slam into reverse, and would shift hard. I finally got rid of it after the warranty expired because I didn't want to get stuck with a $7K bill for a new transmission. I liked the 6 speed better.
I had a 73 Challenger 318 3 speed on the floor with a Hurst handle on the shifter. We don't need no stinkin' 10 speed. Reliable and good looking, easy and cheap to repair. Do we really need the Rube Goldberg machines they make today?
It took 4 months and 3 different dealers but they finally got my 2019 Ford F150 10 speed fixed at 46k. Sadly, I traded it while it was still in the shop after 3 months without no sign of a fix. ...my last Ford.
@@mikefoehr235 When I bought my '19 F150 (3.5 Ecoboost / 10 speed) I seriously considered the Tundra. But 15 or 16 mpg highway is murder and the Ford's all aluminum body and cab saves 700 lbs or so and won't rust. I know Toyotas are great but that mpg number is a no-go. I get 17-18 around town and have done 24+ on road trips with my F150 - and it's been flawless.
@@mikefoehr235 "Which explains why Toyota no longer offers the V8 in the Tundra." It really ticks me off when mfrs do stuff like that. Why not introduce the twin-turbo V6 while STILL offering the naturally aspirated (proven) V8.

Those 4R70 and 4R75 transmissions that Ford put in the Crown Vic and F-150 were pretty solid. Change the fluid in them and they could last a really long time. Plus you can get a remanufactured one with a warranty for about half the price of these new transmissions. There's just something to be said about simplicity.
@@longboardguy I’m a Toyota guy but the new Tundra is too new for me…so I’m going 2017 Lariat 5.0 6 speed…but prices are still Way too high for me, they need to drop 25% to get back into reality

from what I'm told the dealership can disable that learning process in the computer and it fixes that problem instantly IF you can find one who will do it. I've heard from two people who had it done and both say it fixed the issue.
I have been driving for 50 years and never owned an automatic transmission because they are inferior to manual transmissions except for accident creation.
@@thomasblankinship98 Back in the early 1980s I had a 69 Camaro SS 396. Stepping on the gas gets old fast. I like cars that can get around an autocross fastest. For that a manual works better and is more fun.
My 2019 fiesta s has the 10 speed but tbh the 32 a mile and great handling is fine for me. My subaru had issues with its 6 speed auto. My fiesta? Nope. I mean the shorter the gears the less power needed to get to the next gear so more milage for me. And as a guy who lives in a city it is perfect.
There is really nothing wrong with these 10 speed trans. You will get a few bad ones here and there that’s normal. The trans will skipped gears 2 4 and 6 to save fuel. When you change the driving mode, or tow with the truck you will use all 10 gears to maximum the performance. I have a 2018 5.0l and hauled two 300lbs quads on a light 100lbs trailer going up hill with ease like I wasn’t hauling anything. My old ‘13 5.0l 6 speed would be in 3rd close to 3k rpm’s screaming up the same hill with the same load.
My 10 speed in my 2018 lasted 70k miles before it failed and needed replacement. I towed 5k lbs probably 10k of those miles. I kept up with the maintenance religiously, so don’t call it a maintenance issue. The 10 speed in the F150 is garbage.
I've got a volvo/ford bastard child for a car and the only reliable thing in it is the Aisin Warner 5 speed transmission. I got the car because it had a 2.5 5 cylinder with a tiny turbo on it so it's pretty quick and smooth, just kinda annoying to upkeep but at least it's actually mechanic friendly to work on despite its compact size.
Great information Scotty... I don't blame Ford, I blame our government (EPA). My 6 speed 2007 Tundra started getting a little wonky at 300,000 miles, the dealer reset the shift memory for me and all is well once again. I keep it in Sport mode, and that also seems to help.
@@moonziemoonzie5524 Ford doen't make the regulations that are driving the poor quality and poor engineering choices all because of seasons, I mean climate change.
@@bodyoftruth7766 nope. Ford doesn't make regulations. That's why we have regulatory bodies like the FDA, the EPA, the ATF, etc.etc.. no, Ford is not interested in regulations.

Had a 2020 mustang with the 10 speed. Had it bought back by ford for the faulty transmission

Does it have any harsh shifts at all, the start up clunk (driveshaft) or that delay from 3-4?
No harsh shifts. It is a work truck. I drove it till it had 168k on it. They gave me a new work truck. My work still has it for a beater at the quarry. It’s still getting it.
@@jonmoss3204 so 168k on an original 10r80 with no maintenance? I know that’s not unheard of in many trannys but the 10r80 is just bad all around. My 2018 had its first one replaced at 59k. I don’t do burn outs, tug-o-wars etc etc. but thanks for keeping up with this post
The 10R80s are known for having rough shifts. Tune it with a reliable tuner like Oz to fix the shift schedules and it’ll tighten way up
Transmissions are complex, any type can have issues. My opinion, if you test the limits, you’ll find the limit.
It would be nice if we still had the option to purchase a manual transmission, not only is it more reliable it makes you pay attention when your'e driving.

the ford 10 speed is a great transmission apparently some had issues but every one ive drove works great. i love it in my ranger

The problem with sport mode is that it's really difficult to not drive jerkily in town. Fun sometimes, but not very relaxing to use all the time.
I felt the sports mode increase the wear and tear of the transmission. I drove a Durango in “sports mode” and jerks around on when on low gears. Also shifting between Drive and reverse back and fort without making a full stop will wear the transmission much faster.
Yeah I only use sport if I'm traveling on 55mph+ roads. otherwise its really jerky
🤣 I'll stick to my Eco mode in town lol
Exactly the truck will skipped gears in normal mode to save fuel or if the gear is not needed. The owners manual I believe actually says this.
I had the same exact problem with a Ford Fusion 2 liter AWD. Sport mode, no problem. Switch manually, no problem. Regular/Normal mode, weird. They “resetted” the software which fixed it for a little while. Very fishy.
