Jeff Porcaro best session drummer and way ahead his time. Could play the most impossible drum parts that others struggled to play. He is greatly missed and gone way too soon.

The drummer was the late Jeff Porcaro. He was also in Steely Dan for a time. He played on literally hundreds of hit records during that era. He was one of the most recorded session drummers in history. Check out his Wikipedia and look at the list of hits he played on. It is mind blowing. All of the Toto guys were in demand session players. Steve Lukather - guitar, David Paich - keys, Steve Porcaro - keys and Mike Porcaro - bass. It seems that every major hit in the late 70's and 80's had one or more Toto guys playing on it - Michael Jackson's Thriller album, Earth Wind and Fire, Lionel RItchie, etc. etc. They were absolutely amazing.

In a Jeff Porcaro interview he once said he never did a drum solo in a live concert. He said that was because his job was to keep time and nothing else. He was one of the best time keepers ever. The entire band was a more modern version of the Wrecking Crew studio session players in the 60's. The only Toto member I ever met was Luke and he was exactly like he is in every interview I've seen him in. Like he is talking to a friend.

Jay and Amber, excellent observation that notes and dynamics were "perfectly placed". The band complements the singer and "doesn't overpower". For the members of TOTO, the song is King, that is one of the key reasons they were called for so many sessions. They always did what was best for song. Along with the musicians of TOTO and the Wrecking Crew there was another collection of musicians known as 'The Section' (aka 'The Immediate Family'). Members of the Section are guitarist Danny Kortchmar, keyboardist Craig Doerge, bassist Leland Sklar, and drummer Russ Kunkel along with guitarist Waddy Wachtel and mult-instumentalist David Lindley. The Section worked with artists such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Phil Collins, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt and others. 🎸😎

Your response to "Toto - Stop Loving You" resonates deeply with me, and sparks a flood of emotions and memories.
To me, this song feels like a companion piece to "Toto - Pamela," each carrying its own poignant significance.
Jeff Porcaro, the rhythmic genius behind the band, stands as a beacon among drummers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Los Angeles.
His intuitive groove, impeccable timing, and signature shuffle are testaments to his unparalleled skill.
His untimely passing in 1992 was a devastating loss to the music world, leaving behind a void that can never be filled. I imagine Jeff in heaven giving drum lessons to the Angels.
Thank you, Rob and Amber, for acknowledging this song. If you're open to exploring more of Toto's repertoire, "Til The End" featuring Paula Abdul's choreography in the music video is a gem worth discovering. 🙂

First, I just wanted to say thank you for reacting to Toto’s music. They’ve been my favorite band since I first heard them at the age of 14 when a school friend let me borrow their debut album back in 1978. I did get the opportunity to see them play live when drummer Jeff Porcaro was still with us (and five more shows after his death). I was also very lucky to meet him after one concert and before another show. He was just the most humble, nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. Especially since he was one of my musical heroes.
Since you mentioned you enjoyed Jeff’s drumming here are a few songs I would recommend listening to from the remastered albums if possible:
“You Are the Flower” (1978) - from their debut Album Toto. Lead vocals by original lead singer Bobby Kimball.
“Hydra” (1979) - from their second album Hydra. This is their most Prog/Rock sounding tune. It also is very cinematic and has a very “BIG” sound and arrangement. Lead vocals by keyboardist David Paich.
“Mama” (1979) - also from Hydra. Lead vocals by Bobby Kimball. This is a song where Jeff is playing his famous shuffle groove. Speaking of which, Jeff was the drummer on the Michael McDonald song “I Keep Forgettin’”.
“Waiting For Your Love” (1982) - from the album Toto IV. Very nice dance groove. Lead vocals by Bobby Kimball.
“Till The End” (1986) - from their Fahrenheit album. Joseph Williams, who also was lead vocals on “Stop Loving You”, shines bright here as well.
“Somewhere Tonight” (1986) - also from Fahrenheit. It has a reggae feel to it. Lead vocals by Joseph Williams.
“These Chains” (1988) - From the Seventh One album. Another shuffle tune from Jeff. Lead vocals by guitarist Steve Lukather.

As for further songs to follow up with, try Only You or All The Tears That Shine if you want a ballad, Kingdom Of Desire if you want to see their version of heavy metal or Great Expectations if you want something more experimental or proggy. It's ALL good. Toto just doesn't do anything bad. Great reaction!

Jeff Pacaro was the best, not only session drummer but one of the best pocket drummers! His timing is second to none. He was one of three Pacaro brothers in the band. His brother Steve played keyboards across the stage from David Paich, and his other brother took over on bass was Mike Pacaro. Lead guitarist and vocals is Steve Lukather. The ginger haired boy singing the song is none other than the great Joseph Williams. Jeff and Mike Pacaro are no longer with us, but their music lives on through the fans.

Toto is my favorite band since they came out with their debut album.
"Stop Loving You" was from their album "The Seventh One" which is my favorite Toto album as their are so many good songs on it... Pamela, Anna, Straight For The Heart, Stay Away (featuring Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals), Mushanga, A Thousand Years, Only The Children (great guitar solo at the end), These Chains, and Home Of The Brave (their song about America).
White Sister was their rock song from their 2nd album Hydra (2 awesome guitar solos by Steve Lukather). It's still frequently played during their concerts even now.
If you want to hear an astounding drumming performance by Jeff Porcaro, watch their video for Goodbye Elinore from their 3rd album Turn Back...
They are touring with Journey for part of this year....
    Peace!

The drummer is Jeff Porcaro, he died a long time ago already and he also played for Boz Scaggs on the song 'What Can I Say'(1977) and that's a great song worth listening/reacting to, especially the live performance with some members of the Doobie Brothers, it's awesome!

In 81 or 82 Toto opened for Boston here in Honolulu. I left after the concert believing Toto was just as good as Boston. And they were not going to be an opening act for very long, they were going to be a headliner "BIG TIME!!!"

I've grown to really like this song. Initially it was a little departure from the normal "Toto" sound. But over the years it's grown on me. They were really good last year when we saw them with Journey in Champaign, IL. I think you should react to "I'll Supply The Love " ...first song on their debut album.
