    You guys have to realize that there this more than one singer in Toto. David Paich does most of the singing on Africa. Pamela is sung by the current singer Joseph Williams. On Rosanna, Steve Lukather and Bobby Kimball share vocals on that song. There is also some other songs where they have Steve Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen & Jean-Michael Byron singing as well.

    Back in the day I never heard this song. I was into jazz fusion at the time. A co-worker invited me to see his cousins Top 40 band. They started the show with "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and I think "Raspberry Beret" and then THIS song ! I was blown away! Pamela kicks a**! Anyone mention Joseph Williams is the singer. John Williams (JAWS music fame) son.

    This is my most favorite song of Toto's. The singer, Joseph Williams is the son of the Great John Williams, the composer (also conductor, pianist, trumpeter) of so many movie scores such as the Star Wars series, Fiddler On The Roof, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman (Richard Donner) series, Indiana Jones series, E.T. The Extraterrestrial, the Jurassic Park series and on and on and on, not to mention all of the TV Shows such as Gilligan's Island, Lost In Space and The Time Tunnel among many others.

    Steve Lukather, Toto's guitarist has been on so many albums as a studio guitarist, it is just unbelievable. Often he is too underrated. Amber will love that he was the goto guitarist for Quincy Jones when recording Michael Jackson. He also played for Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind and Fire, Lionel Ritchie, Richard Marks, Donna Summers, and so many more. He still keeps Toto going today, when not touring with Ringo Star's Allstar Band. He also wrote and sang one of my favorite Toto songs, I Won't Hold You Back - you should definitely react to it.

    • @SweetThing
      @SweetThing ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And Steve Porcaro wrote "Human Nature" about his daughter being bullied by a boy and she asked Steve why the boy did that and he told her: "It's human nature". And Quincy Jones wanted Michael J. to sing the song, so Steve Porcaro graciously gave it to him. Toto does a good job of singing it themselves.

    Joe Williams was the 3RD lead singer of TOTO (from 1986-88) following original singer Bobby Kimball and Fergie Fredericksen (RIP)in that order. Williams actually joined the band when Totos popularity was declining in America. Williams returned in 2010 following Kimballs return tenure from 1998-2008. Now they are a touring band with Steve Lukather being the ONLY original member.

    Respect and love for iconic drummer, Jeff Porcaro. In addition to being a founding member and original drummer of Toto, Jeff Porcaro was a legendary studio drummer who arguably was the most recorded drummer in the seventies and eighties playing on hundreds and hundreds of songs. He played on numerous tracks for Steely Dan, Michael Jackson (4 out of the 9 tracks, including "Beat it" on the bestselling album of all time, "Thriller"), Michael McDonald ("I keep forgetting"), Boz Scaggs (all of "Silk Degrees"), Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, the list goes on and on. Jeff Porcaro always played to the song with impeccable timing and feel defining Toto's sound (also co-wrote "Africa"). The entire band were outstanding in their own right, but Jeff Porcaro's drumming was the heart and soul of Toto's sound. When you listen to a Toto song recorded in the seventies and eighties listen closely to the drums to really appreciate how great Toto is. Jeff/Mike Porcaro RIP.

    Musically, Toto is one of the most talented bands of their era. Each member was top-notch musically. Their drummer is really, really good. I just checked Wikipedia, and many of them were session players for artists like Boz Skaggs and Steely Dan. That explains a lot. Great band. Great song. Great reaction, you two.

As a Gen-X guitar player, been playing for 30+ years Steve Lukather is one of my guitar heroes. A little-known music fact: a lot of the Toto musicians were used in the studio by David Foster when he produced the Chicago 16 album, too. (This had big hits on it like "Hard For Me to Say I'm Sprry" with Peter Cetera on lead vocals.)

    They have so many songs with girl’s names there’s a term for it: ”Toto girls”. Although Rosanna obviously is hard to beat, my favourite might be ”Lea” from the album prior to this one. It was written by the third Porcaro brother, Steve, (who also wrote Human Nature for MJ) - the second keyboardist, who had departed the band when this album was recorded. BTW, the singer here, Joseph Williams, is the son of legendary movie scorer John Williams (Every Star Wars movie, and every movie by Steven Spielberg, and much more).

    Toto is not only a great band, each member is a first call studio musician in their own right. Jeff Porcaro the drummer was playing on Steely Dan records in high school before Toto became a band. The band played on four songs of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. Guitarist Steve Lukather has played on 1500 songs. He’s recorded with Lionel Richie, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Aretha Franklin, and a ton more. He won a Grammy award for the George Benson tune that he helped write called Turn your love around.
    The talented these musicians have is almost unmeasurable.

    Toto is: Jeff Pocoro - Drums (Died in 1992)
    David Paich - Piano/Keyboards, Vocals
    Steve Lukather - Guitar, Vocals
    Steve Pocaro, Synthesizers (left the band in 1987, came back for later touring)
    David Hungate, Bass (left the band after Toto IV in 1982)
    Bobby Kimball, Lead Singer (Left the band during recording of their 5th album Isolation, in 1984)
    Mike Porcaro, Bass (Joined the band after Toto IV in 1982, Died in 2015 of complications due to ALS)
    Fergie Frederikesn, Lead Singer (October 1984 - through 1985)
    Jean-Michel Byron, Lead Singer (Four tracks on their Past to Present 1977-1990 album)
    Joseph Williams, Lead Singer (1986 - forward)
    They never had consistent lead singer because Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather and David Paich all took turns singing lead. Then when bobby left, they worked to find a replacement and finally found one in Joseph Williams (son of composer John Willams). Great band with a rich history. Note that there are three Porcaro brothers who played in Toto. Jeff was considered the CEO of the band.

    One of the most unique things about TOTO is that they have more than one lead singer; in fact, I believe they've had four. If you re-watch some of the videos you've already seen (Africa, Hold The Line, Rosanna...), you'll notice that it's a different guy singing lead on each of them. They are also phenomenal musicians!

    I don't think you've heard Joseph Williams sing lead with Toto before. "Africa" was David Paich (keyboardist) singing lead and "Roseanna" was Steve Lukather (bass guitarist) and "Hold the Line" was Bobby Kimball. Joseph came in after Bobby left. Joseph is still stinging with them today. Steve Lukather aka Luke just came out with a new album: "Bridges", with Joseph and David Paich singing back-up; it is awesome. Joseph's father is the great songwriter/composer John Williams. Joseph wrote "Pamela" and yes, there was a Pamela and I know who she is. This video was great, because all of the originals were still alive; Mike & Jeff Porcaro. RIP. xx Check out Joseph Williams singing "Burn" from one of their more current albums to really hear his range. You have over 40 years Toto music to delve into. These guys have played back-up for, harmonized with & written music for 1000's of other bands. Steve Porcaro wrote "Human Nature" and let Michael Jackson sing it. The music critics used to hate Toto because they said they were "too perfect". Jealousy will get you nowhere. They are still gr8 in concert and were just performing with Journey recently. For some reason you have chosen not to show my comments, (because I'm not a Patreon swooner?) as I know many people would comment on the info I have just given. Too bad; I know Joseph W., he comes from my hometown. I could have set you up for meeting your first famous musician. Anyhoo, you guys have changed. You're not the real deal anymore; you're phonies. A lot of others have said same. You don't love us,; you don't know us! You're all about the subs and Patreon. And Amber thinks she's an authority on music as she rambles on & on. You're no longer what brought us to your channel. If the truth be told, I bet Jay or Jordon or whatever your name is, still only likes rap! I preferred your "Rome" friend who got you in this business; he was sincere. You could learn something from him.

  • @tonyjforder
    @tonyjforder ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Toto have had four frontman lead vocalists - Bobby Kimball is who you heard on Rosanna, this is Joseph Williams (son of composer John, and as an aside Joe was the adult Simba singing voice in Lion King), and there was also Fergie Frederikson for one album and Jean-Michael Byron for one album. But David Paich (keyboards) and Steve Lukather (guitars) also regularly take lead vocals both in the recording studio and live. Synth player Steve Porcaro has also taken lead on a couple of songs. These are such great musicians they are able to play rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz, metal, and prog with equal virtuosity. They are all over some of the great 70s and 80s albums, including Thriller.
