Jeff Porcaro is their drummer, and he is on everyone’s “best ever” list.
Listen to “Rosanna” and pay particular attention to the drums. The beat was actually dubbed “the Rosanna shuffle” and there is a TH-cam video where Porcaro describes how he composed it. It’s pretty famous and there are darn few drummers who can pull it off.
Sadly, Porcaro has expired and thrown off this mortal coil. RIP.

Not trying to be combative but I have only seen him on a few beat ever list.
This is a Perfect example of the 80’s, not my “sound’ but can’t deny the talent and composition. Still played in public spaces and that is the mark of a great artist.

Also the song Rosanna is about the lead singer's at the time girlfriend actress Rosanna Arquette. You might know her better as the brother of actor David Arquette from the Scream movies and he was married to actress Courtney Cox.

If you decide to react to it I would suggest the live version. Post Porcaro, but the new drummer nails it.
A little long, but it will definitely quench your piano Jones.

There are no females in Toto or backing Toto, that was the lead singer.
This song was very popular when I was in 6th grade. I loved it and still do. Toto is a GREAT group, their song "Rosanna" "Love Isn't Always on Time", "I'll Be Over You" and my favorite "I Won't Hold you Back"
"Rosanna" is about Rosanna Arquette ( her famous siblings are John and Patricia Arquette)
I also heard Eddie Money's song "Shakin" is about Rosanna Arquette, but that could be rumor. At any rate Rosanna left an impression. Lol

You might also like some late seventies/early eighties Genesis, songs like "Follow You, Follow Me" (1978), "Turn It On Again" (1980), and "Abacab" (1981), maybe also some Peter Gabriel from the same period ("Games Without Frontiers" and "I Don't Remember" from 1980), maybe too Tears for Fears' 1981 hit "Change." This 1982 Toto song brought to my mind all that because this song would have flowed right into or out of those ones on the radio at the time.

It's the same guy at the end that sings the high notes for Africa and not a girl. He has great powerful high to sing what the low toto guy can't. You need to listen to it again and pay attention to his frequencies on the high notes. He also does a great job on the high notes on Roxanne or Roxanna. It's a very powerful high this guy packs. Enjoy it more as you get to hear it for the second and even 10th time. Toto is one of my all time favorites and the synth you like so much is being played by the lead singer if I am not mistaken. He plays the keyboard really well.

There are no female vocalists. The high voice is tenor Bobby Kimball, shown singing the higher parts of the song. Unfortunately, he's currently been suffering from dementia since 2019, so may leave us soon.
The song is about a man torn between traveling with his woman and staying in a continent he has grown to love.
A band member was messing around with his new synthesizer and discovered a rhythm with marimbas. This song was composed off of that. At that time, no member of Toto had ever actually been to Africa.

A must see is the “quarantine version” of Africa, done last year during the COVID shutdown. They now have the son of legendary film composer John Williams (Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Jurassic Park) singing lead with David Paich, who sings in this video. As others have mentioned, they played on thousands of songs as studio musicians. And the man playing percussion, Lenny Castro is a frickin beast.

@@janleonard3101 you're not wrong... according to the writer he got the idea for the song after watching a documentary that left him feeling sad. When he went to write the song he realized he had little knowledge about Africa. He said he remembered the missionaries who visited his school. He said the one thing that stood out was how they talked about how lonely they felt but still had dedication to their work.

Toto is another group like Steely Dan who used a lot of different musicians. They had a excellent drummer in the late Jeff Porcarro. Other than Rosanna & Hold the Line in also like their ballads I Won't Hold You Back and Georgy Porgy (good piano in that song Jordan)

I'd LOVE to see your reaction to the long version of the Toto song "99".
Per the other comments, these guys were Premier studio players, every one skilled. The song "99" shows that off, but find the extended version with the 2+ min Coda.
I just get lost when I listen to it.

Toto is an unbelievably phenomenal band and their talent is immense!!
J, that is Jeff Porcaro on the drums!! Phil Collins is great on the drums, but Jeff was on a whole other level ... he was an AMAZING drummer!!
Toto has SO many songs ... super deep rabbit hole!! The music is incredible!!
Obviously the big hits: Rosanna, Hold the Line, I'll Supply the Love, 99, I'll Be Over You, and this song.
Many forget: Stranger in Town !!
Amber and J - please dig deep!!
Afraid of Love, Georgie Porgy, Goodbye, Childs Anthem, Drag Him to the Roof, Angel Don't Cry, White Sister, Carmen, Mushanga, Home of the Brave, Goodbye Elenore, and ... just for J (hint) ... Gift With a Golden Gun !! 😁 And this is just the beginning!!

The instrument on the solo? It's wonderful what you can do with a good synthesizer. You can overlay the basic organ tones with those of an African flute, and throw in some marimba on the second phrase just for good measure. My keyboard playing friend always said she could sound like anything you wanted on her synth.

Hey guys, when you say you can see him playing the "piano", but it doesn't sound like one, that is because there are literally thousands of different types of synthesizers that use keyboards similar to pianos. Back in the 70s and 80s, synthesizers were pretty limiting but pioneers like Steve Porcaro of Toto made amazing use of the technology. Those "limited" synths could still make all types of other-worldly sounds and those sounds really dominated pop and a lot of rock in the 80s. These days, since sampling, a keyboard can trigger ANY sound you've ever heard. Hope that helps. Here's a whole explanation of exactly (more or less) he played those sounds for Africa: th-cam.com/video/_tFuxC74XDc/w-d-xo.html
