Thanks! You always put out great content with these videos. I've often thought about the best use of practice time. I would love to know more about how you go about discovering killer combos. I've just started creating mini playlist (3-5 tracks) for peaks which I can work to in my sets.
Excellent job!!! I love your ideas…. I’d like to show you a great transition that I do to go from hip hop to house… I get my tables next week.. I took a 10 year hiatus
I don't necessarily need to take your course, but I would love to see a patreon I could contribute to and get like access to the tribe or whatnot. I owe you something for all the stuff Ive learned through your channel here. I've been doing live streams but had my first, in person, ticketed, event last week and with many more planned in the future.
Two best ways to get good, that you do at the same time - 1. Love the music and practice with it for hours a day, sometimes 12+ hours in a row. 2. Go to the club and enjoy it and pull inspiration and see how a room gets worked.
Do you know the only thing I don't like about your info? Nothing! Not a damn thing.., I've been DJing for 25 years... lost the love for years (for a variety of reasons). I'm diving back into it and relearning everything in a digital format/context. I'm going to sign up for your class today. Excited to have you (re)teach me everything! Let's drop some records! (Do they even say that anymore??)
I got your course last year and really enjoyed learning and seeing my skills improve. Eventually tho I hit a point where my mixes didn’t sound “good” and I got unmotivated to continue the course and covid didn’t help either. I’ve found it hard to get back into the groove of things and idk why I find it easier to pick up a video game then my mixer =\
I've been practising by mixing the same set list over and over again, except I start writing notes of what to do, when to do it, so im basically just following instructions as I mix...idk if this is helping, or making it worse, as I am no longer completely thinking and listening to the music, and spontaneously ,axing my tracks. What do you think about this method?
I don't have a pioneer mixer, so I don't have all the effects, is there any chance you could do a video on how to do a creative set but without all the effect using only the filter as the only effect, I have a xone 23c
eq mixing mate, to create a cool set you dont have to have a digital mixer with effects, research your tracks and mixing in key, as well as creating phrasing during transitions. the music and song choices are what makes a good set not the effects you use, they can just emphasise certain areas or help you get out of tricky spots if needed.
I also have a xone23c and I prefer it over a Pioneer... unmatchable audio quality and it puts the focus where it belongs, on the music and track selection. Remember, track selection is key and is where most of your focus should be imho... just my 2c, cheers!!
Hi. On point 3 you give the advise to make a good arrangement. Do you mean to use the song in a different way. I am always trying to make mini mixes following songs structures but I mostly use pop songs (2-3 min) that are harder to mix halfway. The club songs have more opportunities to mix ( drops, instrumental parts or just plain melodies) What is you advise in this. Great videos! Love the way you teach.
I was becoming so productive, doing the courses and had just started with 3 deck mixing(learning), then school started and now I do not have as much time then i had in the holidays, so now i eagerly wait for the weekends to watch the course videos and try practice, Thanks for Tips!
Haha lots of people echo out to avoid mixing, so key is irrelevant, but you can also add echo outs to standard transitions - I don't think you need to over think it, read the crowd, play what you feel is right for that moment :)

How do you deal with the struggle between mixing your set in key, and building an energy flow? I find if I make a setlist of lets say 20 - 25 songs my ability to direct the flow of energy while attempting to keep things in key is somewhat difficult. I often wind up having to make quite a few choice concerning what track is next based on key because nothing else in the list is going to be harmonic. Then I am stuck dealing with whatever the track does to the energy level. I know I could grab another song but if I run into the issue 4 times in a setlist that could be quite a bit of additional material in the set that I really was not interested in. Also when ever I actually plan a set from start to finish the transitions are often very different than just lining up the phrases and starting and stopping the tracks at the right time. For instance I might catch a single bar loop on an outgoing track and adjust the tempo with that loop for 8 bars then drop the next track in at a full on house beat and work the 1 bar loop over the house beat for a couple phrases. I never to that kind of stuff when I am just jamming tracks that have cue points set on the phrases. Is that something you grow into or do you still find your transitions in a preplanned set are more in depth than mixing on the fly with prepared tracks?
