I loved the way you explained the 5 drills. Very clear and straight to the point in each case. Thank you mate! Coming to a selection of the one I found most relevant…Drills nu,miner 4 & 5. Above all, number 5, getting a solid 10 track list and working on it be able to mix properly those songs that really match together.
Im a Dj with major ADHD and my library can cause me to overthink so much so for me the last advice --along with looping the intro and outro so you can work on EQs and creative filtering gave me life. Thank you !
Great video, recently bought a flx4 controller to start mixing and didn't have a clue where to start. Purchased the beginner and pro flx4 courses from Crossfader and within 2 months i already feel much more confident mixing thanks to the courses. Regularly practicing tip one to train my ears has helped massively i guess and i had already started tip 5 by organising small lists of tracks into what sounds good together into a mini set. Would highly recommend the courses for anyone who wants to start out mixing. 👍🏻
Can I just say damn! Number 5 is absolutely a must. I started doing this about 2 months ago but I'm gonna double down on this even more. I would love some more tips like number 5.
Thanks a lot, i liked the 101 on the crossfader. I really don't use it enough. And one thing to add to the first part about beat matching. When I used to mix daily with Vinyl in 1998 in a place where I had good speakers, and good headphones on one ear, my brain was able to tell if the song in the headphones was to fast or to slow by focusing on the hi-hats not the kick drum. Even when both songs were playing on the main speaker.
So, I used to be a dj from the mid 90's into the 2000's with vynl, so for me, my ears is the only thing I had to use for timing. I stopped a little after the Cd mixers came out. I now have a digital mixer, so it's like learning all over again. This video is going a lot. Thank you for sharing. I'll be looking into your curriculum more.
I’m in the EXACT same boat…I used to mess around with vinyl but haven’t spun since like 2003 Just ordered a controller and I’m about to jump back in an I know it’s probably gonna feel like I’m starting all over again
I was doing a fun exercise on the decks the other day with a mate where one of us picks the tracks and the other mixes without looking at the software. Really good if u have a B2B partner as it tests your song knowledge and u just gotta trust they’ve picked a good track. On 2 channels it’s probably not as good but 4 channels with DnB and its pretty fun. Plus I can fully practice song selection with the Camelot wheel in your head, or see how someone else mixes routines you’ve preplanned out.
I done something similar to this - There was 3 of us and we had a ~ 2 hour journey in a car - person in the back (also DJs) had my laptop picking songs and I had the decks in the passenger side hooked up to the cars Aux. First time I had DJ without relying on software in front of me or knowing the song choice coming up- was very difficult (especially with limited experience) but a lot of fun!
This is exactly what I needed, coming from a background of playing drums, I am used to rudiments and rigid practicing. So having drills like this is how I function in learning skills. No directions twards any genre in these, just plain skills than can be applied almost anywhere. Great Video!!!
The playlist drill was super helpful! I have inherited about 3000+ tracks from an experienced dj friend of mine and that section makes it seem way more possible to make a playlist/set that works well.
Love the last tip and excited to give it a go. Also, gonna add a couple steps to that drill and make sure to tag those tracks and mark tracks that go well together using Matching/Link feature. Thanks xfader 🙏
Thank you! All of these tips are great, however the last one is my favorite. Like you said, I have many songs and I play different types of gigs. I’ve definitely run out of time thinking, “ooh I could play this or a I could play that, especially mixing on the fly. This is the best tip I’ve seen about library organization.
I don't think people grasp how important No 5 is, i remember i did a multi Dj performance a few months back, was practicing for a couple weeks, i had my tracklist set up and ready to go, on the day i decided to switch up and add a new release in which completely threw me off, thankfully it wasn't a major performance or anything but it highlights the importance of not trying to do too much! Great tips!
Loved this video, very helpful & transparent. #5 is a great drill I, and as I can see in the comments, many of my peers have already taken up. Thank you Crossfader, you rule 💪🏼
I’m like brand new, I Dug the tone practice with the crossfader, and the intro outro loop practice. And I will definitely be practicing them all. Thanks
Great stuff here guys!! Being a drummer/musician since I was a kid gave me a little bit of a head start into the DJ world and I absolutely love it!! I totally agree with having little mini sets that work great together and having them stacked together in playlists. I usually practice for like 1 to 2 hours each night when I get home from work whether I have a DJ gig coming up or not. Just like being a musician there is always room to learn more. Never stop learning!
The last two, with the crossfader and the playlist practice I found most valuable. All of them are things I will be working on, as someone brand new, but those last two I got the most from! Thanks for making FIRE content and always bringing great value to us newbies
Great detail to the point! Loved it! Usually I will get a mix idea in my head. Then I will do an hour non stop! But I do love the last tip. DJ insurance mixes when you need it! Short or long. Will give it a try! Thank You!
#1 reminds me of how I was forced to learn, lol. 2 "direct drive" turntables that didn't have much torque and didn't always maintain perfect pitch as it were (Stanton DD circa 2000). So I was CONSTANTLY having to tweak the speed to keep the 2 in line. It was frustrating at the time, but then I'd feel spoiled playing on a solid set of 1200s. Wait... it's staying put??? This is GREAT!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Also, in retrospect, it trained my ear to catch it early, which is always good to avoid a "trainwreck."
Drilling over the same loops and listening to tweaking of different parameters, that's what's on my practising mind. And as a piano learner I know focused repetition is the way to mastery of one skill at a time. As a beginner Dj I'll be doing Drill #2 and #5 FOR SURE! Thanks a lot!
The best video I’ve ever seen on this channel, IMHO. One technique to the next using some of the best equipment you could use for only that purpose. Excellent!
Great advice never really practiced scratching, I want to learn to do it with the loops and effects. I want to learn what effects mix with the sound fx (tag together) so I can get cleaner sounds with the effects.
I like the last one, subconsciously been doing that a long time, many of my gigs are 8 hours so when you hit thay mental block dive off to these areas and hang out for a bit of you time for 15 minutes, no need to over think and an active break, in that space you have some new ideas then back off to the races in a different avenue
Really great lesson, I only have one request. Can you use a different genre of music in your videos? because drill 2 isn't as easy with certain genres.
remember doing things in drill 3 back using atomixmp3 back in the early days when vinyl dj's thought I was mad but they all using digital dj techniques now... great to see how much techniques and abilities have changed but the basics remain the same
Sir pls guide whether flx 10 is compatible with iPad recordbox app or not??? Which battery operated standalone controller you will suggest numark mixstream pro go or omnius duo?? As I am doctor with busy schedule not able to manage time for practice so planning for portable battery operated standalone controller. Please guide . Thank you in advance. Love from India ❤❤
Honestly, the first and the last tips were the best. Your job as a DJ is to select the tracks that fit the mood of the dancefloor. To create an atmosphere larger than you. Those two tips help build the muscle memory and the less glamourous order for you to instantly create the atmosphere you need for a pumping dancefloor.
I have a question regarding CDJs and playlists. I use Serato so I’m used to having my crate of songs all in order for a set. I haven’t used a usb with the Rekordbox exported playlists (I hardly understand that part) so I’m wondering if the playlists are like that, or they’re organized only by name, etc? I couldn’t tell from different videos.
Hey Jamie, With the finger drumming I noticed your acapella was exactly half the BPM of the looping drum part. Is there a rule/formula to get the BPMs right?
I learnt to beat match on vinyl 20 years ago and now I feel mega out of the loop with all the new features. Recently got myself a controller and I’d love to build on some skills. Where the bloody hell to start
Unlimited DJ Education - wearecrossfader.co.uk/complete-dj/ 🚨
I use a Reloop Mixtour Pro with DJ Pro AI . I keep the hell away from media players and Rekord box
Did they update the screen on the XDJ-RX3? Seems like the waveforms are properly showing in sync now, whereas before they would look slightly off.
The last Tip makes total sense, as we all have so many tunes to choose from. Great way to learn them inside and out!
Absolutely!
@@Crossfader sir I don't know the keys and camelot wheel so can u give me a tip for this plz
Agreed. I’d never thought of it as having lots of little building blocks to bring together. Great tip!
I just organized my library this week. Its time consuming but necesary.
I totally agree with this. I like the way it feels getting a good "mini-set" put aside to call on whenever it's time
Been djing for 3 years now. DJ Carlo and Crossfader have the best advice/instruction

Thank you crossfader for these practice tips! I really like 10-15 song mini idea and the bpm matching by ear!

the last one was the best ! Many thanks for your support ! and kind regards from Germany !
Can I just say damn! Number 5 is absolutely a must.
I started doing this about 2 months ago but I'm gonna double down on this even more.

Yes, I agree, more tips about this if you can.
Thank you!

The last tip was great. I'm definitely going to try that approach to build blocks.
I definitely needed to hear drill/tip #5 today!!!! Thank you Jamie. You guys rock! Such great content

Welcome to the 90's 😂
This is an absolutely awesome suggestion! Will share the is with the CROSSFADER community ❤️
We still do and call it a pick'n'mix session 🫶🏻

Me and my friend do exactly this
Great tutorial, We (DJ's) take these drills for granted. Bless Up

I needed this video sooo bad! My practice sessions were definitely getting stale and this is a great refresher! Thanks Jamie
Thank you!

super helpful, I've already started practicing the first drill, and looking forward to trying out the rest, especially the finger drumming!

Really liked the beatmatching, eqing techniques and loved the idea of narrowing down your playlist by focusing on 1st 10 songs first
The last two, with the crossfader and the playlist practice I found most valuable. All of them are things I will be working on, as someone brand new, but those last two I got the most from! Thanks for making FIRE content and always bringing great value to us newbies
Drill 5!!! I love that!!! Many blessings!!! I've bought 3 of your courses so far!! Thanks for starting my DJ career!! 🧠📝💪🏾🔥
Awesome! Thank you!

Never thought of doing drills but got a lot of value going through these as a beginner ! Thank you so much 💗 will be doing these daily 😁
Glad you like them!

You are so welcome!
So glad I bought the full Dj course…lots of videos I can access right on your app🙏🏾🙏🏾
Enjoy!
This was actually an awesome video for someone who has just started DJing, really appreciate it
The best video I’ve ever seen on this channel, IMHO.
One technique to the next using some of the best equipment you could use for only that purpose.
Excellent!
I've got to get better with using my crossfader...thanks for the drill exercise!
Amazing drills to do🙌🏻🙌🏻hats off to the detailing of the video.
Thank you !!! Awesome video. Great basic practice tools.
Some brilliant advice here loved step 4 as looking to get scratching nailed
As a more than seasoned dj I must say @crossfader you have hit the nail on those primary skillz... 💯 Big respect
Really appreciate that!
Another great video!!! Thank you everyone at Crossfader🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Our pleasure!
Such a great advice
I’ll try all of them next time
Have fun!
You offer some really good advice and training - thank you
Pleasure!
Thank You very much guys!
Great drills. The last one is spot on
Great advice never really practiced scratching, I want to learn to do it with the loops and effects. I want to learn what effects mix with the sound fx (tag together) so I can get cleaner sounds with the effects.
essential advice at the end - cherry on a top.
Make sense tip 5, I'm always looking for new one's 😂 and never find 😢, I now know what to do, thanks !❤
Sure thing!
Exactly what I was looking for
Drill 3 is my favorite tbh. I love just playing around with the EQs when I mix without recording/experimenting
Another very helpful video, defo will practise these. Cheers mate.

Thanks bro I really appreciate it 19:08
love the mini set tip! gold!!!
Found this vid at the right time. Just got a new laptop and before i transfer ALL of my music to it I'm going to stick to 10 tunes and keep it simple!
Wow tip 3 is such a simple but good way to learn mixes!!!
Glad you think so!
@Crossfader I was looping the in track and trying to time for the mix but I had to keep going back..seems obvious now to set a loop there!
Really great lesson, I only have one request. Can you use a different genre of music in your videos? because drill 2 isn't as easy with certain genres.
remember doing things in drill 3 back using atomixmp3 back in the early days when vinyl dj's thought I was mad but they all using digital dj techniques now... great to see how much techniques and abilities have changed but the basics remain the same
Great drills and clearly explained 👍🙏
I learned to beat match on vinyl tech 12s years ago. There wasn’t any laptop digital displays or beat svnc. Kids got it made these days.
Superb lessons !
Thank you so much 💓
No 4 and 5 👍 well done Jamie 👌
Last tip is gold 👌
#4 and #5. I’d like to be better with the crossfader(and scratching) plus make some new routines and those were some good tips
Thanks,that's great
Pleasure!
i like the last tip. thats what i do as a open format dj
Best video for a long time
Which course would be the best for someone who has a DDJ REV1?
Really helpful🙏
Thanks
Very helpful!
Great educational video😇
J I like the way you laid out this video you deserved more than a thumb up so *****
Sir pls guide whether flx 10 is compatible with iPad recordbox app or not???

really great clip
trying to get my scratching down... that crossfader drill is clutch for anyone trying to get more comfortable
Hey Jamie,
With the finger drumming I noticed your acapella was exactly half the BPM of the looping drum part.
Is there a rule/formula to get the BPMs right?
Hey,
Can I fly over to the UK and get a few direct teachings???
This is great
Thx 🙏🏽
Any time
Drills for using filters (Reverb) when mixing and intoducong the new track.
Essential
I usually lower the bass/kick to not confuse myself when a track is close in sound/key.
Great tip!
great information
Glad you think so!
I’d like to add, beat jumping. Has helped me sm with learning to dj. Definitely something I recommend to everyone who does not already use it.
respect. scratching tip helpful
bro i just watched your DJ RR review cause i just got it and then clicked this vid and had no idea who this dude was :D
At the end when he promotes another video but nothing popped up. 😂😂😅
Had to 😂😂 with you
Brother showed us all his devices :D
I love you guys❤
