    From a DJ here who started on vinyl 25 years ago, this is sage advice. Even with sync on newer gear, you need this foundational skill. Great video brother!

      Appreciate that, sorry for slow reply

    • @RaveyDavey
      @RaveyDavey ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do you though....really?
      If you're using your own, pre-prepped tracks then the sync button does it quicker and better.
      I suspect this will be the last generation who even thinks about this stuff.

    • @TammoLWD
      @TammoLWD 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Late reply, but yes even with all your tracks prepped to perfection, you still need these fundamentals. Different key snares for example can sound of even tho their grids are synced perfectly. This needs some micro adjustments on the fly.

    These explanations are the best I've seen on beatmatching, no doubt. Add to that your absolutely non-menacing and non-exclusive encouraging and willing to share attitude, and the result can only be one: You're a great teacher.

    If you're using rekordbox, press Space bar to hide the waveforms.
    Definitely the hi's/mids are a better option. Especially so when I play bass/deep dubstep where it's easier to match the snares than the kick.

    i've been mixing for atleast 5 years and I still watch this, don't know why... had nobody to learn me back then i was learning by myself and i think its the best way, but the way you show and explain to people is awesome, also what helped me mostly about beatmatching techno is that i went on full on oldschool equipement with DJM 400 and CDJ 350 , therefore u dont have visuals only track lenght and your ears, best way to learn how to beatmatch, no need to cover anything :) what also got me better in beatmatching is my playstyle i love to mix tracks 130-133 bpm with hardtechno 142+ , those are way off from each other and once u get them together feeling is increadible :D

  • @davidchew
    @davidchew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Been DJing since the 80's during the era of vinyl, and I used to train DJs back then as well. We had nothing buy vinyl, so there was no way we could loop intros or instrumental breaks, All we had was a manually counted BPM. I still spin today, but looking back, I've always felt all those who wanted to be DJs should start on vinyl. They would immediately learn these basics of beat matching. Your video brings back memories of the old days!

    Great video as always Andrew. That third tip needs to be included in the course. Can't wait to try increasing the high on the incoming and see if that helps with some tracks that have little kick drum. Those I have trouble beatmatching. Glad to see you back in the studio and getting back to speed again.

    This was the one thing that kept driving me nuts when mixing. I can beat match and I have used micro movements during long intros or outros but I just couldn't get my brain to function when it came to not using the wave form to beat match. Now I have something I can practice on specifically.

    Great video! I agree about the highs, I truly feel the beats are "locked in" when you get those highs in line. It gives that "crisp" feeling. Beat matching is all about "feeling." Once you get it, you will "feel" when the beats lock in.

    • @brunocristan7047
      @brunocristan7047 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea it makes sense since snare and hi hats shorter "notes" than the kick therefore you don't have much room for error so it will be more precise but harder to master.

    Awwww you're so sweet and smiley, Andrew. You've made me feel so much clearer about my DJing, and the way you explain techniques actually make sense - and I remember what you teach. I mean thinking of the jog wheel as a clock, so simple... genius! :) The course is so worth it and so welcoming, no matter what level you're at eg, I got so much out of the material which I didn't expect. I've had musical training and a natural ear but had been winging it DJing for years, probably made it much harder for myself tbh!

    Love this! I mix dnb and its often easier to use the snares to mix with as it is more of a higher resolution to work with, a compressed bass can be quite a way out even when it sounds right, like you say when you listen to the highs it can reveal the slight mismatch.. top stuff!

    I’ve been following you for a while now. But I haven’t watch most of your beginners vids. This one auto played and when you got to the third way to beat match it made me smile. I learned on vinyl. And it took me more than 5 years to learn how to beat match. Being partially deaf in one ear. Also has left me close to tone deff. So the bass all blends together more often than not. So when I was learning how to mix. I had to find a marker in the music to use. Well I mix off the highs and mids. High hats or snares. To me they sound like a metronome, so those tones became my natural marker to mix on.
    Keep up the good work!
    From Melbourne Florida!
