The PS2 version tends to be harder to speed up on that part, so maybe that's why? Idk man I've never really had problems with it except on that version of the game lmao
My twin and I first played this game on the PS2, and, yes, sometimes you had to fly above the laser. There were times that Sonic had enough momentum to grind past it, but not all the time. When we played it on the GameCube, we never had this problem again.
I really think Sonic Heroes would benefit the most from a remake. The level design is fantastic and some of the best in the series and the core team mechanic is super fun, it's just the little physics and control problems that need fine tuning. Honestly, if they just incorporated the 'lock-on' for the homing attack and shoulder button switching for rails from the modern titles, that would immediately solve most of the game's problems. Then just make the pinball mechanics more polished, allow you to switch formation in midair so you can save yourself as Tails, and make rails something you can home onto and then I think every level would be amazing.......oh and probably change the bosses....they all need changing.
Idk about a remake. We shouldn't go clamoring for demanding remakes cause of inconveniences in every older game. A remaster or whatever that just irons out certain kinks makes more sense, but , and this may just be nostalgia talking, i don't even think anything in Heroes is in desperate need of touching up to even warrant THAT. Just... Get good yo lol. If you're used to how certain things control in newer titles, well understand this came before those additions and deal, is all i can say. Not just for this but any older game. The remake card shouldn't get tossed around willy nilly is just what i think. The bosses are kinda cheeks in this game though, i give you that.
All those awesomely creative levels but in level design and aesthetic, tight but smooth controls, a greater variety in combos, attacks, upgrades and power ups, a mode to play with one character at a time, all of thay would be chef's kiss
It would be pretty cool seeing a remake of this game with all of the modern voices for the characters. That would definitely make it so they spent lots of effort on it, rather than being lazy by reusing all the original dialogue.
I know bullet station isn't one of the most playable stages, but to me is a S. I just love the scenario and the feeling of infiltrating a base builtin a canyon, specially with the visuals. I just love it
Most of his issues with the game are because he doesn't know how to play it properly. Not entirely his fault, despite the game handholding constantly they managed to not explain rails properly causing 8 yo me to have to figure it out myself...
@@ub3rfr3nzy94 Nah he's playing it correctly. The reason he's having most of these problems is because he's playing the PC version which is somehow worse than the PS2 version. I honestly didn't even know that laser at the end could hit you until I watched Ross's Game Dungeon and he had the same issue. Reason? He was playing the PC version. Rail grinding was already glitched up the rear end on consoles and PC made the issue way worse. Even the team battles take a hit because the tornado move no longer works in team battles on PC so you can't abuse it like you do on console, making 2 and half minute fight (At most) turn into 10 minute long fights. I played it myself to see if they were just bad at the game, but the PC version is truly inferior to the consoles. He should of just played it on Dolphin.
@@iccirus4191 Correct you are supposed to hold it but either way works on console. I spammed the button and still beat the laser on both the GameCube and PS2 version. The PC version is literally the only time it becomes problematic but I already went over that.
15: Special Stages (E) 14: Rail Canyon (D) 13: Casino Park (B) 12: Power Plant (B) 11: Mystic Mansion (B) 10: Bullet Station (B) 9: Bingo Highway (A) 8: Final Fortress (A) 7: Lost Jungle (A) 6: Seaside Hill (A) 5: Frog Fort (S) 4: Egg Fleet (S) 3: Hang Castle (S) 2: Ocean Palace (S) 1: Grand Metropolis (S)
Your problem with the rail grinding is that you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to HOLD it, not spam it. I get that you assumed otherwise based on the button icon still flashing after holding it which is bad design, but considering that holding is how it works in SA2, you'd think people would at some point try to hold here too. I don't know though, maybe I was just lucky to figure it out early. The tilting at curves to gain speed is still there, the animation is just less wonky as to not instantly make you lose all your speed (bit too subtle though). I think it's pretty obvious why rail switching while traveling at supersonic speeds causes you to fly off. Straight rails can make you jump two rails instead of one. This is because of your speed, which makes you travel faster and thereby longer distances while jumping. It makes sense, really. Slowing down helps with this too. It's not very difficult to gain momentum again, so it's generally much better to slow down a little than to take the risk and jump at the curve. There is also this one BS section in Rail Canyon where it's completely impossible to get ahead of a train, which would be fair except that it's slower than you and you crash into it unless you let go of the action button and/or press it again once to reset your momentum. Knowing how to grind properly, Rail Canyon becomes a blast to play. It's fast paced and tilting wrong won't make you instantly lose all your speed like in SA2. There's only one very short section where you absolutely need to switch from Sonic unless you know how to launch yourself 90° into the air, making this the most fast paced level in the game. Also, for the pumpkin ghosts in Mystic Mansion you have to wait until they've finished their spawning animation and you'll never really fail with the homing attack. This one is 100% the game's fault though, SEGA should've made them spawn earlier. I agree with just about everything else though, good video. Very glad you're fully enlightened about BINGO Highway and What I'm Made of.
Sonic Heroes was my first game and when I was a kid every single rail section was a nightmare to me cus i didn't understand the mechanics. I remember the rail switching just being random, sometimes i would go to the other rail others I would go flying to the abyss. And i had no idea about the hold mechanic. Recently I came back to the game and found out what i was doing wrong and as you said rail canyon was a blast, becoming my 3rd favorite level of the game. But even though i now understand the mechanics they still feel really slippery and unreliable. In unleashed they would fix the problem by switching rails with l1 and r1 which helps a lot and im pretty sure they removed the hold mechanic since you had the boost. I think the problem wasn't the mechanics, the problem was the implementation of those ideas. Since that was my first game i never knew about the hold mechanic and switching rails just bugged sometimes. I mean, sonic heroes, in general, was a buggy game like the metropolis bug in pc and the homing attack, but the rails were so frustrating sometimes. That's why we need a heroes remake, that would make this game so much better, or even just a port with better controls. Fix the bugs, fix the movement and fix the grinding, and if sega feeling generous fix the boss fights. And there you go, you have an S tier sonic game.
It really sucks because a lot of people's problems with this game come from not understanding the mechanics. You mentioned a couple but another I see is the Power Characters attacks being slippery but you won't move if you don't hold any direction, which in most cases you don't need to move with the power characters while attacking. I love this game to death but a major problem is that these mechanics are just never explained, like for the longest time I didn't know that you could do the Team Blast again as Team Sonic if you launched him with Tails or Knuckles, that the Rocket Accel only works when your team is lined up behind you, that the level 3 speed characters can instantly homing attack rails without the need of their tornado attack, for the longest time. After you know all this the game honestly becomes such a blast to play, the only real problems I have being Casino Park and some of the Chaotix missions.
@@RadiantBlazeVA I agree 💯 . It’s funny fans nowadays can only look back on the games they criticized and blame themselves for the state that Sonic has been in the last recent years. Imagine a sonic heroes 2 that would be the coolest thing ever but we will probably never see it because Sega doesn’t take risk anymore and it breaks my heart.
@@RadiantBlazeVA I think you're onto something here. I like this game a lot, I played it a lot as a kid and I've recently picked it up again and I've mostly enjoyed my time with it, but I don't think this is a really good game. I think some of the ideas it puts out are great, but the problem is that a lot of the ideas are too vaguely explained through gameplay/tutorials. As noted by OP, stuff like rail grinding is misunderstood. It feels like you go faster by mashing, but if you did a speed test, holding is way faster. It's the same thing with special stages, it feels faster to mash boost than to hold it, meanwhile on my recent playthrough I got every single emerald first try in 10 seconds or less by just holding the button and careful navigation right at the start. Does knowing the mechanics make it good? No, there are still tons of issues because of the misconception and some iffy level design, case being shit like the rock in Ocean Palace where if you hold down during the start of it the rock accelerates faster than the player. How is any player supposed to know not to move in a game where you're supposed to be moving a lot and moving fast? Isn't that a contradiction of the entire point of the game and the character? Do I find it fun? I do. That's where the distinction of good/bad and fun/not fun has to be made. A game can be really fun but also terrible, a great game can be very not fun, and really the worst case is a game is terrible and not very fun as many people see with shit like Balan recently.
Egg fleet is my favorite one of all time, but not because of gameplay or gimmicks, it's only because of the dynamic shot every team gets on the stage opening cutscene
The easiest way to deal with the speed trial in Mystic Mansion, is to hold the jump button after every homing attack so Sonic hovers in the air a little bit. If you just spam it really quickly, it will more often than not just get you killed. Interesting strategy with Egg Emperor. It's way easier to just get level 2 Flying, and just spam thundershoot for ages. You can actually influence the direction of it by using the analog as well.
15:17 Had a tough time with this for a while too, the ghosts aren’t considered enemies until they phase in completely. You won’t homing attack them cuz of that, it’s best to hold the homing attack button to stretch out the vertical recoil so they ghosts have enough time to spawn in.
There actually is one moment in Lost Jungle where you need to avoid the black frog to progress, but it's only in Team Dark's version of the stage; at the moment in Team Sonic's version where it goes top down and ends with you using a light speed dash, Team Dark has to go up via some platforms on a vine which are right next to a black frog, so if it spots you the platforms will disappear, and they have to go to a green frog to get them back and try again. EDIT: As for the Homing Attack, I recommend tilting the Analog Stick towards the enemy if you aren't already, as you're probably supposed to since this basically guarantees that the Homing Attack will work, but if you are already doing that, then I don't know how to help you than to consider playing the GameCube or Xbox versions instead of the PC or PS2 versions, as I have heard that the former two aren't as glitchy (I can't speak from personal experience because those former two are the only ones I played, and even then I haven't played the Xbox version in years, but this is what most people say); to deal with the pumpkin ghosts disappearing before you can hit them, I think the only thing you can do is just do it faster, since I assume they're like the Gold Beetle from SA2 where they disappear after a while. Lastly, one actually can and is supposed to grind the rails fast enough to evade the laser, so I don't know why you can't; maybe it's because you aren't holding the B button but just repeatedly pressing it, so I guess just hold it next time and see if it works, because it does for me. Lastly, you can actually beat the Egg Emperor even easier by just leveling up Tails twice and flying as high as possible and just repeatedly hitting the boss from there. If you read this, then I can only hope any of this helps you in later playthroughs. Also, I personally consider Live and Learn to be the best Crush 40 song, but as you said, I'm fighting a losing battle, and I love every Crush 40 song anyway, so I'll just leave it at that, especially since What I'm Made Of is definitely a close second anyway.
The problem with the homing attack is really the ghosts hitbox, it takes a little after they appear to actually be able to hit them. What I do is wait a little bit before continuing the chain, cause Sonic gains a little bit of air time after he hits an enemy.
even though i may not agree with your ranking, this was an awesome watch! surprised to see how low views it has considering how well put together this is and how awesome sonic heroes is:p
Yes, you can get through the Final Laser by just going fast. I didn't even know about the laser for a time because I'd go fast through that section and the detonation cutscene barely shows the laser.
Thank you for talking about the genius that is the Ocean Palace bgm. Has been my favorite Sonic Heroes song for a loooong time. Also, thanks for including Metal Sonic, as I thought you would skip it for a minute. Nice suspense lol
*4:58* When you talked about the springs not launching you for the power plant zone, I am confident that it's a pc port issue as the PC port is an unfinished version of every other version.
Yeah I'm pretty confident that the laser is a PC issue because I didn't run into it on PS2 at all growing up. I only knew it fired when I was playing for this video. It's the same for the team battles being absolutely dreadful on PC, but 10 seconds on console.

I had PTSD flashbacks seeing you talk about and show Sonic missing those ghostly pumpkin heads in that spooky stage. I remember being so upset playing those when he'd miss or when they'd randomly disappear. I loved this game but that right there.... what a menace of a level.
lmaooo the intro to Metal Sonic was so good. I was literally just thinking that the final 2 bosses were actually solid- at least comparing to the ones before it.
15:15 I think the homing attack is more of a fault on your end. Skill issue. Hold down the fucking damn jump button for extra height off of the hit after a homing attack to better guarantee the next chain. You are clearly not getting enough height thus missing the homing attack prompt by not holding down the jump button. You put yourself into risky territory by homing attacking on that level. Homing attack has always worked like this throughout the series. You have to be always higher than your target for a successful homing attack. So before you blame the game, maybe take a look at yourself and your shoddy gameplay. "You can have a perfect run and Sonic decides to not attack anything and you die" Oh yes blame Sonic, and not yourself for not giving him enough height to prompt another homing attack.
Great video but there's a couple of things I want to mention. -For the team fights, you can just spam blue tornado and win in less than a minute -tails isn't usless in the metal overlord fight. If you switch to tails when metal uses the crystal missiles, he can deflect them way, preventing anyone from getting trapped.
Watching they lack of Mystic Mansion knowledge hurt. Can't spam Homing attack Can hold the homing attack button after using it to gain extra height Knuckles and tails use homing attack with you when you use it, and can hit other ghosts making them disappear.
the ghosts dont randomly decide to leave in mystic mansion, when you hit the first ghost, it looked like knuckles kept going and hit the second, which is an entirely different and even funnier issue
A detail that should raise the ranking of Mystic Mansion is that it's the only level where the music changes depending on where you are in the level. Sections of the song will loop if you don't leave to the next area/room before the next section song section starts. I used to try to pass rooms on time so the song runs smoothe or would linger in areas for my favorite parts of the song. Best part, the final chorus and best part of the song is triggered at the climax of the level for all teams.
I love everything about mystic mansion except for that end section with the ghosts. If it worked, the level would be my favorite. It's honestly the one I replayed the most as a kid. I just can't say "this is the best level" when part of it only works when it wants to. (Depending on the version) Gotta be a tiny bit objective.

Yooooo! I notice that neat little music transition you did! The Hang Castle segment started playing the inverted track as the gameplay went to the inverted side too!
Actually I used the OST version, which switches back and forth, but I did time it so that part played there! I just love the drum section that plays during the transition to inverted and wanted it to be included.
After seeing how boring and automated rail grinding is after this game, I've always liked that switching rails during boost pads and curves can mess you up, it's a good punishment for trying to be correct at the last second as seen here 9:12 it's a yellow rail so it's pretty clear what they're implying.
The problem with homing attacks on mystic mansion is that the enemies are untargetable until the phase in animation is over, that's why sonic sometimes misses. You have to wait a bit longer between homing attacks. Also you can definately get past the big laser, you're playing the rail sections wrong thats why you keep dying. You're not meant to spam the button, you have to hold it and tilt the analog stick. To reliably switch rails and not fall hold the stick left or right and press a, don't do them simultaniously or you might end up jumping and then going left or right instead.
Right? I had no issues with the rails, just the mystic mansion homing attack part which again is just easy by holding A after the homing attack on the ghost. A bit of patience pays off. I have more trouble with rails in Sonic adventure 2 than Sonic Heroes
You've probably figured this out by now but you're not supposed to spam the b button to build speed on rails, you hold it. That's how you're supposed to get past the final rail cannon section on the final stage
All the rail grinding sections (including the Final Fortress' big laser) can be done better by *holding* the X button to maintain speed and leaning into the turn. Sonic's trial in Mystic Mansion sucks because some things aren't explained: -after doing a homing attack, you can hold the jump button to gain more air time from the bounce and prepare the attack better -Knux and Tails can just hit the ghosts and make them fade out before you can strike Tails is quicker still at killing the Egg Emperor; at level 2 the Thunder Shoot does decent damage and can continuously disable his shield. It's also an all-round good attack for non-shielded pawns.
Yeah it's really such a shame heroes sucks at teaching the player it's finer mechanics, like the additional airtime from the homing attack or the fact that level 3 speed characters can activate poles by homing attacking on them
My TOP 3 are Egg Fleet, Rail Canyon, Hang Castle. -I just love so much Egg Fleet, it's challenging, it's actually "cinematic", due to being so high, the ambience of rushing into a dangerous flying base fighting your way on as defense systems and infantry constantly attacks you, allowing some of Sonic's trade mark multiple pathways along the epic music. It's an action movie packed into a stage. -Rail Canyon I like it a lot, I love the speed and danger feeling it gets, being my favorite parts the rhino trains chase, basically a playable cutscene in which you can even follow their rails and found a different path and the trains that outrun you, can actually be outrun, grinding speed works like adventure 2: just press, not spam and that speed is what I love in Rayl Canyon. -Hang Castle you just said it all, it's an incredible level!
Egg fleet amazes me, I don't think I have seen anything like it in a video game. You are high up in the sky amongst a massive fleet of ships, not actually driving a ship yourself but are on foot. Even with such low resolution, I think seeing the sky clouds below you is incredible. In general I really like the Heroes level designs, most of them feature you being situated very high up, allowing you to get a view of pretty much everything below you
13:57 Fun Fact: This stage is actually inspired by the Walt Disney ride The Haunted Mansion, Sonic Heroes was first released from Japan in December 30, 2003 while the film starring Eddie Murphy came out in November 26, 2003.
i have to disagree with the powerplant ranking. imo its on the same level or better than grand metropolis. i loved killing enemies to progress on the new mechanic of the vertical gravitational things. for some reason it the level felt so large too, probably due to the verticality aspect. despite my inability to progress in the final section of the level without assistance as a kid, I loved the implementation of the leaking fire thingy and the gradually increasing climax. i still appreciate its implementation to succeed in what it wants to do (build tension and create a challenge).
18:10 you have to hold X for this part, holding X actuallly speeds you up more than spamming it. of course the safer option is going to fly type and avoiding it, but holding X almost always makes you avoid it, which is what SEGA intended for this in the first place @Spannondorf
I loved everything about this game. Light hatred, fun, creative, diverse dialog, multiplayer6, team blast and THE BEST voice actors. Grand metropolis is my favorite level and music in sonic
Loved the list. Personally Egg Fleet is my favorite stage, but I think your placement for it is understandable. I've found out from seeing Cyberman's playthrough of the game that the fastest strategy for the Egg Albatross is actually to knock the bottom plane part while getting a power level and then stand in place. He will come towards you and then you just span fire dunk on him. You need to time it, but he'll be done very quickly. I know you can totally get an A-rank with the homing attack strategy, but the fire dunk strategy is crazy quick. You can totally outrun the laser in Final Fortress, I didn't even know you could avoid it with flight formation. Go to speed formation and hold grind until you're done!
Oh also, you can speed up the Egg emperor a ton: use thunder shoot to knock down his shield and then either fire dunk him or use Knuckles' lv 2 combo finisher and his life just drops. The lv 2s of the other power characters throw stuff to the sides so for them fire dunk is safer. Knuckles' fissure lingers and keeps doing damage for a while, so it's the best for this. I've once been lucky and gotten a power lv from one of the mooks on the way to the arena portion so Knuckles was lv 3 and that was honestly absurdly fast. You can still A-rank and be done with in a single round using flight formation and lv 2 thunder shoot. It's a bit safer. Also the stray shots from your friends will likely fly around and speedrun building up team blast meter. Same strategy can be used on the red and gold iron man eggbots and is honestly the best way to beat them. Wait for them to shoot, use thunder shoot so they can't guard and use the power character to trucidate them.
Jumping and holding the B button as Sonic (on GameCube) during the cool down of team bast causes you to basically do another one. It makes the Egg Emperor hella easy. I think this was mentioned in the vid but for all who didn't know (as the game never explicitly tells, just gives u a small notification for it)
I do love how you put a picture of Slyfer the sky dragon on the Metal Sonic boss picture because I thought the EXACT same thing when I played this game as a kid
Loved the video, glad I was recommended it in my feed, but... Why can not a single soul on youtube grind in heroes properly lol? That giant laser at the end of final fortress can 100% be passed by going fast enough. You just have to hold B instead of repeatedly tapping it :p
@@a1joryj It does the same thing for other actions. You're not supposed to mash B when pushing or pulling switches, using the light dash, or opening flowers as Charmy.
15:20 You can overtake the error by waiting for the ghost completely apears I with more care land your homing attacks 19:00 CHARGEE!! its avoidable by doing a well timed tornado or a normal attack with knuckles, or may favourite doing a perfect rocket akcell towards eggman
18:00 You can very easily dodge the laser. In fact, you can find people in other videos just grinding forward. As a kid, I didn't even realize there was a way to get hit by the laser.
I would like to make a statement that part of the fun of this game is thinking on the fly how to deal with enemies, as far as combat goes in Sonic games this game is second only to Frontiers, which just takes elements from other combat focused games anyway. With that said, I feel the enemy rushes are among the more fun bosses in this game. Thinking on the fly about how to deal with each wave of enemies, its pretty fun IMO
Great video, was a trip down memory lane. Idk if it was because I was young and impressionable when I first played it, but this was my favorite Sonic game until Colors. it's also the only one I 100% completed. All they had to do was make the controls more reliable
5:45 well I know what to tell you: Just do the tornado move as Sonic, shit ends in like 10 seconds. And you can do this for every team fight. I'm not kidding go try it out yourself 6:54 This is mostly random but sometimes when I switched to other characters they would already be past this section so I wouldn't have to mess with it, kinda lucky ngl 12:36 again, spam tornado, I promise you it works 18:08 actually I did it through speed only once. So it is possible, you just gotta be *booking* it
Actually, that giant laser cannon at the end of Final Fortress CAN be avoided without using Flight formation. Just keep holding the action button (X in the PC port, for example) with the Speed character, you should be get by the laser before it even launches.
Great list! I didn't realize how much of a missed opportunity Generations had with this level. One of the Hang Castles, one of the Egg Fleets, or one of the Frog Forest levels would have been way more cool than Seaside Hill AGAIN. Disagree about the Crush 40 song though...I still think Live and Learn is better...if only by a little bit 🤭
Tip for the homing attack chain at the end of mystic mansion, the ghosts actually move farther apart from each other, like they move a little to the left or right each time, so what I do is instead of spamming the homing attack is move sonic a little towards each of them each time and it never seems to fail from my immediate recollection, I feel like I’m the only person who noticed this because I’ve never heard anyone else mention it
Yes. Holding the jump button could help, but as I showed in the gameplay the ghosts will sometimes disappear without any interaction. The issue is likely a PC/PS2 only issue, since those ports are notoriously buggy.
@@Spannondorf Actually the problem I saw in the video is that you hit jump(attack) too soon even before the ghost fully appeared. The ghost can only become attack-able after the appearing animation stops. Since Sonic hasn't locked on any target, you fell. That's why I said you didn't jump high enough to wait for the ghost to appear.
The timestamp you posted shows two ghosts active immediately. The second ghost disappeared when I attacked the first ghost. Either it hit some form of a timer or maybe tails or knuckles attacked it, but it was definitely there and active before I went to hit it.
@@Spannondorf ok I slow-checked and at 15:21 it was Tails who touched the ghost, so it's something universal and doesn't belong to specific ports of the game. Nonetheless, the issue I mentioned was from my observation of the whole footage(15:08-15:36) where you didn't hold jump button after every hit(like if you have held the button and moved forward, you wouldn't miss the homing attack at 15:17), so just ignore the 15:21 timestamp. I played PS2 version as a kid and never have I had a problem in this section.
19:03 🤓Umm, ackshually you can counter the charge with tornado jump🤓 Anyways, great tier list. My personal favourite would be Final Fortress though. The soundtrack and the atmosphere of this level were too cool for my pre-teen imagination back in 2004.
In my first playthrough of sonic heroes near the end of power plant, I panicked because of the Lava or Energy, I think? whatever it's called, and I died
15:20 with the sonic section it was fine but the damn robot kept shooting his gun at sonic when I was about to homing attack the last robot and I was mad

It would be pretty cool seeing a remake of this game with all of the modern voices for the characters. That would definitely make it so they spent lots of effort on it, rather than being lazy by reusing all the original dialogue.

Exactly! Rail canyon is one of the most Badass levels in Sonic history.

Let's Play, Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur
15:17
Had a tough time with this for a while too, the ghosts aren’t considered enemies until they phase in completely. You won’t homing attack them cuz of that, it’s best to hold the homing attack button to stretch out the vertical recoil so they ghosts have enough time to spawn in.
Let's Share, Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur
11:51 "BIG the Frog"💀💀💀

"You can have a perfect run and Sonic decides to not attack anything and you die"
Oh yes blame Sonic, and not yourself for not giving him enough height to prompt another homing attack.

This video is really underrated! You got a new sub!
(Depending on the version)
Gotta be a tiny bit objective.

@@Spannondorf You've got good taste! 👍
After seeing how boring and automated rail grinding is after this game, I've always liked that switching rails during boost pads and curves can mess you up, it's a good punishment for trying to be correct at the last second as seen here 9:12 it's a yellow rail so it's pretty clear what they're implying.
15:13 Just hold the homming attack button for longer before performing the next one and you should have no problem with it
The problem with homing attacks on mystic mansion is that the enemies are untargetable until the phase in animation is over, that's why sonic sometimes misses.
Game doesn't do a good job conveying it
You've probably figured this out by now but you're not supposed to spam the b button to build speed on rails, you hold it. That's how you're supposed to get past the final rail cannon section on the final stage
^THIS
As soon as I saw Ocean Palace in S-Tier, I was reassured this man knew what he was talking about
Ocean Palace is untouchable! Bloody brilliant music, aesthetics, enemy numbers and drama with the rolling wheels
All the rail grinding sections (including the Final Fortress' big laser) can be done better by *holding* the X button to maintain speed and leaning into the turn.
Sonic's trial in Mystic Mansion sucks because some things aren't explained:
-after doing a homing attack, you can hold the jump button to gain more air time from the bounce and prepare the attack better
-Knux and Tails can just hit the ghosts and make them fade out before you can strike
Tails is quicker still at killing the Egg Emperor; at level 2 the Thunder Shoot does decent damage and can continuously disable his shield. It's also an all-round good attack for non-shielded pawns.
Yeah it's really such a shame heroes sucks at teaching the player it's finer mechanics, like the additional airtime from the homing attack or the fact that level 3 speed characters can activate poles by homing attacking on them
My TOP 3 are
Egg Fleet, Rail Canyon, Hang Castle.
Luv this video 🖤 thanks for the nostalgia!
Sonic and ghosts realizing ghosts aren't real is hilarious!
Got my daily laugh.
Egg fleet amazes me, I don't think I have seen anything like it in a video game. You are high up in the sky amongst a massive fleet of ships, not actually driving a ship yourself but are on foot. Even with such low resolution, I think seeing the sky clouds below you is incredible.
In general I really like the Heroes level designs, most of them feature you being situated very high up, allowing you to get a view of pretty much everything below you
13:57
Fun Fact:
This stage is actually inspired by the Walt Disney ride The Haunted Mansion, Sonic Heroes was first released from Japan in December 30, 2003 while the film starring Eddie Murphy came out in November 26, 2003.
i have to disagree with the powerplant ranking. imo its on the same level or better than grand metropolis. i loved killing enemies to progress on the new mechanic of the vertical gravitational things. for some reason it the level felt so large too, probably due to the verticality aspect. despite my inability to progress in the final section of the level without assistance as a kid, I loved the implementation of the leaking fire thingy and the gradually increasing climax. i still appreciate its implementation to succeed in what it wants to do (build tension and create a challenge).
Rail canyon was one of my faves I liked the danger and how precise you have to be, I hated lost jungle with the vine swings back in the day
I grew up on ps2 and Ive never had a problem with the 3v3 team battle. I just spam thunder shoot or blue tornado

Y'know...... don't hear many people talk about the Ps2 version as much as the other versions
18:10 you have to hold X for this part, holding X actuallly speeds you up more than spamming it. of course the safer option is going to fly type and avoiding it, but holding X almost always makes you avoid it, which is what SEGA intended for this in the first place @Spannondorf

The Sonic Unleashed stages in this video are actually meant to be training stages before you play the actual game.
Sonic Heroes has one as well.

9:00 i actually liked this level. Yes it was a pain but the thrill of those rails bro was another feeling

18:08 actually I did it through speed only once.
Tip for the homing attack chain at the end of mystic mansion, the ghosts actually move farther apart from each other, like they move a little to the left or right each time, so what I do is instead of spamming the homing attack is move sonic a little towards each of them each time and it never seems to fail from my immediate recollection, I feel like I’m the only person who noticed this because I’ve never heard anyone else mention it
15:21 you do realize that you can hold the jump button to jump higher after a homing attack, right?
19:03 🤓Umm, ackshually you can counter the charge with tornado jump🤓
Anyways, great tier list.
Tails for the Metal Madness fight can be used to destroy the missile he fires that could trap team members, also builds up team blast.
15:20 with the sonic section it was fine but the damn robot kept shooting his gun at sonic when I was about to homing attack the last robot and I was mad
‘ you better start some hands excercises if you wanna get past this part of the game otherwise I dont know what to tell you”
🥰😂😂😂
21:58 Slifer the Sky Dragon but blue
17:11 ive NEVER heard this sound in the game.
Edit:i realized this was from another game
Team Sonic, Dark and Rose: all of the stages are great in their own way
