- I haven't seen any videos that has all idle quotes from the game so I decided to make one.
Note: I couldn't get any stage-specific dialogues for Team Sonic on Sea Palace (they are identical to the ones from Seaside Hill) and for Team Chaotix for Rail Canyon.
Also sorry for the sound quality in some of the clips, I have no idea what happened there.

I like the characterization in these lines. I love how Knuckles hates all the modern, technological advancements. Living on Angel island where it's all vegetation and greenery, and super quiet, it makes sense for him to dislike a lot of these locations.

Seems like the idle conversations reveal things about the characters. Knuckles enjoys nature, Sonic loves cities, Dr. Eggman loves Chao and probably has a garden full of Dark Chao, and other things that could go missed.

Cool things can be totally worthless. Like that cool rock you found when you were a kid. It might have sentimental value to you, but in general terms not so much.
Alternatively, style without substance is ultimately pretty lame. Specifically, casinos are designed to look cool and only be interesting enough to entice you to spend as much money as possible. As much style as possible, and as little substance as they can get away with.
Obviously, he tried to gamble, but lost some rings, now he hates it lol
I love everyone in this, they are so in character especially Knuckles.
He's so in character; not really liking technology and preferring nature. And his voice as well, so chill.
It's sad that these are tails' best voice acted lines in the game. These are genuinely adorable.

Is such a casual reaction to finding out someone who fought by your side and sacrificed themselves is actually alive. So weird yet so Sonic.
Joke is, it actually gets more intense. In the japanese version, the cutscene where they met actually references SA2 and instead of doing a datejoke, Shadow straight up says "I suppose you have no choice but to die."
Sonic's reply is the same tho.

The sound quality is just fine
Espio's VA seemed to have some audio issues in Ocean Palace, but besides that the sound quality is perfect.
They honestly put so much personality in this game. I argue more than any other game. They even had a unique quote for each stage

I think SA2 tops with Heroes about their personalities, because of the unique recaps every characters has, each stage with their own song fitting the characters, etc.

Sonic Unleashed shows persona through actions unlike any other game in the series. Even during the cutscenes. Just off the intro and meeting chip you can get the exact understanding of Sonic The Hedgehog and Dr. Eggman.

THIS is the kind of Idle Chatter I would've liked while running around. It just feels more organic and would be better than constant tutorial chatter. I get these are actually in the game but you have to be idle. If there were lines like this while running through the levels it would have been sick.

That's why I love this game story and characters, they tried to make a simple story but didn't forget everything that happened in previous games, different from modern Sonic games where in each game they barely comment anything that happened in previous titles.

A thing I notice is that the speed characters seem more relaxed, the power characters seem more focused on the mission and getting the job done, and the flight characters are more curious. Of course, everyone has their own charm and personality.
It is nice when the idledialogue is better written than the story of the game...you know, in the gameseries where going idle is not intended most of the time. I wonder how much of this is properly translated. Because for some reason, Sonic always had major localisationissues outside of the 2010s.
Anyways, compilation of all references that are not instantly obvious:
- 0:24 Knuckles grew up around the Master Emerald-shrine, very connected to nature. Of course he would dislike a purely artificial location.
- 0:29 While Sonic likes nature, he also likes cool looking modern places where he can go fast in.
- 0:32 Tails dislikes loud noises, especially if they are sudden like earthquakes or striking thunder. Pollution is likely a reference towards Eggman's factories during the classic games.
- 1:01 Knuckles likes dark and calm places and dislikes harsh brightness. A place that is this bright even without the sun being up has to be the bane of his existance, and it gets to the poor guy at 1:17.
- 2:35 He is getting scared by ghosts and this is his third time getting ambushed by them. The first time was in sandopolis in Sonic3&Knux and the second time was in death chamber in Sonic Adventure2. He also had some unpleasent encounters with them in pumpkin hill and aquatic mine.
- 4:02 Opposite to Knuckles, Shadow is more used to purely artificial places.
- 5:24 This has the biggest chance to be a mistranslation in my eyes, because it really doesn't make sense. But I guess this is a weird moment of forshadowing for the next game in the series. Kinda reminds me of how one NPC in SA1 seems to mistake Gamma for an agent, weirdly connecting to GUN(?)
- 8:16 and 9:50 Amy has special abilities due to being an esper. Later in unleashed, her sensing people is expanded to be the explanation for her mistaking people for Sonic.(Shadow likely has a similar aura to Sonic and Sonic really was in the general location when the same happens with Silver two games after this one)
- 8:37 and 9:44 Sonic Adventure made it a plotpoint that Big can track froggy, through....his smell. Which is very weird, but it is a thing, so....yeah.
- 9:15 I have no real idea what this is referencing. It could either be the spooky mirrorcastle from twinkle park or the time when her and team hero were in a zone with gravity-mechanics in Advance1.
I am honestly kinda sad that there are no Knuckles Chaotix-references in here with team chaotix, but I fully understand why. They wanted to redefine these three and there was little room to put references as a whole. There is barely anything to reference too, except maybe the other playable characters of that game.(I actually still wonder what happened to mighty to be entirely honest) Also as an aside regarding that, Charmy's response to the name "Eggman" is not nessesarily a part of their softreboot. In the japanese version, it comes of to me like he just forgot because he is very young and the series seems to treat the classics like they were a few years before the dreamcast-era. How old is Charmy again? *looks it up* Jeez, he is 6 during heroes. xD

This is kinda amazing. All these years, I didn't even know this game *had* idle dialogue. In a series where you're constantly on the move and getting levels done as fast as you can, why would you ever choose to sit still, let alone sit still long enough to get unique lines of dialogue to play?
Face it: you're probably only heard most of the Vector's and Charmy's dialogue because of all those times you went with Espio solo.

It's weird how much better these lines (that you barely would ever hear in normal gameplay) connect this game to the previous ones *than the lines and plot points you actually come across in the game.*

The little dialogue details are what I love about this game. Even the points system quips are great.

They put so much idle dialogue in a game where you're constantly moving around. Imagine how much less repetitive the dialogue would be if they moved some of these to the set of action quotes.
