Just a note... the Coal industry in the early 1900's was sort of a renewed version of slavery. The workers were forced to living in company housing (which they were charged for) paid not in US currency but a company script which was only usable at the local company owned stores and if they made trouble, tried to unionize or even attempted to quit they were often beaten, sometimes even killed by the company security forces (who were the only form of law enforcement in mining towns).

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest armed conflict in America since the Civil War. Miners were treated as serfs/slaves and horribly abused. That fight was triggered by the family of a miner killed while trying to unionize mine workers, evicted and thrown into the street.
The government and media of the day sided completely with the mining companies and against the workers. It's easily looked up.
As for Bill Burr "going Hollywood," it's extremely difficult to live in places like NYC, LA, or D.C. and not be infected by the ethos, which is NOT Socialist, nor even humanitarian, it's more centered around being able to sound compassionate, while actually being anything but. Some call it "virtue signaling" culture, others call it BS. At any rate, it's hard to be in such places, and especially to be in the entertainment industry and not become sucked into all that.

The song "Sixteen Tons" that you reacted to a month ago was about the plight of coal miners. Sixteen tons referred to the amount of coal a miner had to excavate in a day. My favorite version is the Tennessee Ernie Ford version. Love the old-school finger-snapping vibe, and Ford's great bass voice.

I'm a techie from a tiny central Florida town. It's always baffled me that people associate the south with stupid. The atomic bomb was worked out in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We launched people to the moon from Florida with mission control in Texas. Georgia Tech is one of the best engineering schools in the country.

As a matter of fact, I knew quite a few guys who were Redskin fans and were irate they changed the mascot. One of my buddies was talking about the fighting Irish mascot is a cartoon leprechaun and nobody cares. The name changes seem more like being erased from history.

I remember Tom Hanks talking about making his Forrest Gump character. He says the Southern accent is perceived as ignorant/uneducated and that if a brilliant man who worked for NASA, was talking at fine detail about rocket science, people wouldn't take the person seriously, regardless of his accent.
It sounds nice to me and makes me smile, but I'm not from the USA.

There are wide sections of WV that don't have ELECTRICITY. Internet is the least of their problems. There is no regular water (remember, even property wells usually require electricity - this means to get water they need to manually pump it). They have no sewers, so at best they need a septic system. Often there's no trash collection. Sometimes no mail delivery. It's that bad.

I'm a northerner from the Boston area. One other point concerning the way southerners are looked at can be seen in mainstream national media. There has never been a national news anchor that I can recall (or certainly very few) with a southern accent. I'm not just talking about liberal media either. Fox News is a very conservative broadcasting company and even their lineup of anchors includes no one with a prominent southern accent. The is definitely a prejudice relating to the perceived intelligence of someone with that accent. I believe it is unfair, but admittedly I have been guilty of that prejudice myself, but I'm aware of it and have actively tried to change that about myself.

I don’t know about now but when I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s people looking for a career in broadcasting went to Columbia University in Missouri because it was considered to have a neutral accent. People would go there to learn how to speak without an accent in the belief that this would make them hirable anywhere because they would be easier for people to understand when they speak.

Those mining towns were BRUTAL back in the 1940's and earlier, not just in the south either. Many of them used to basically own whole towns and would pay miners in "company script" which was used to buy your necessities in town. Unfortunately for the miners, it was worth the same as Monopoly money outside of the mining town. This ensured that the miners could not leave their jobs because they literally didn't have a dime of US currency and were basically slave labor for the mines.

  • @stevedavis5704

If I understand correctly, the Florida Seminoles took a different approach to “appropriating” the Native American image. They went to the Seminole tribe and worked out an agreement to pay for the right to use the Seminole image and name. The agreement covers what is and isn’t allowed and is followed closely by both sides. Florida gets the name and image the tribe gets a licensing fee and if I understand correctly a cut of the merchandise money. Back when the teams were getting in trouble for how they were acting and portraying native Americans the Seminole tribe was said to go to court and tell people to stay out of their business and leave them to count their money. Not necessarily a good deal but at least it’s not totally taking advantage of the Seminole tribe.

It's telling on its own how the flag is referred to. I, someone from New England, would call it the Confederate flag. That implies the flag represents the South during the Civil War and the things it stood for then. Namely slavery. A southerner would call it the Rebel flag, because to them it represents rebellious southern pride. Same flag, different meanings to different people I guess. You also have to understand that I occasionally see that flag up here, and those people are most certainly not doing it for southern pride. So yeah, fuck that flag.

Deion Sanders, who played football at Florida State, got the chop started when he played for the Braves back in '91. I don't think you would normally classify Deion as a "hillbilly."
As for the idea that if you have a southern accent you are treated like you are uneducated, experienced it firsthand. I spent 2 weeks in Newark for a training class, to get certification, for some telephony hardware. First day of class, we walk in and they have our name in front of oiur seats. They arranged it front to back, alphabetically by last name. That put me dead last in line. First thing they did was have us follow that same idea to stand up and introduce ourselves, where we are from, what our knowledge level with the equipment and/or years of experience in IT. Everyone else was from either New York, New Jersey or Philadelphia. Then it is my turn...the guy from Alabama. Yep, got the looks and at the first break, I was like a museum exhibit, they all crowded around me and asked me all the stereotypical questions "youse really eat grits?" type of questions. It was clear they thought I was interesting but discounted my intelligence. That all changed by the second day of class, once I, in essence, replaced the instructor, since it seemed I knew more about the hardware than they did, I had worked with it for months prior to going for the class. They had changed it so you needed a certificate to be able to buy the hardware. The instructor and I stayed where we were, him up front, me in my seat but questions about functionality were no longer directed to him but to me.

17:55 I know you're not saying this but it almost seems like you're making an argument against free speech and expression, if it's mean, because of your children seeing bumper stickers etc,. In my opinion though these are teachable moments that you shouldn't shy away from, coming from a father of a 16 yo boy and a 14 yo girl...
I welcome any situation that requires my children (after encountering some social ideas that don't seem kid friendly) to think about it, then tell me their thoughts, and make them defend those thoughts, rationally if possible, using the Socratic method. I do that to help them formulate their own opinions while simultaneously guiding them without making them feel like I'm telling them what to believe and how to feel. I've been doing this since they were old enough to speak, and I have two very well adjusted and bright teenagers that are never in trouble and liked by everyone. I know it sounds like I'm just bragging on my kids, but I'm really not. It's 100% true.
I've said all of that to say this... Don't shield your children from mean, ignorant and hateful ideas concepts or speech. That is a mistake, and you're creating a weak person/adult imo. Teach them how to think critically about EVERYTHING not just what YOU think is right (your opinion). And to ask as many questions as possible, and be open to changing their mind when presented with new, credible information that they've personally verified. Teaching your children to combat bad ideas with good ideas or bad speech with good speech, is crucial to raising children that won't just become sheep in their adult years. Which is what the "powers that be" want. Life isn't nice, and it never will be. Teach your children to be strong. Mind and Body. Not to be nihilistic or pessimistic. Strong.

Fantastic video, Britt. I grew up in Houston where my entire family is from but I’ve lived in Southern California since I was 24. I think Bill is a bit off point.
The Tomahawk Chop has nothing to do with southerners; that’s just sports fans being (rowdy and silly) sports fans.
However, this narrative that southerners would be progressive and lift themselves out of sickness and poverty if Yankees were more empathetic is just dumb. Southerners are not kids being bullied. Seditionists took up arms, attacked the United States and were defeated in a catastrophic civil war. There were no late night talk show hosts from 1865 to 1960, but virtually every movie about the Civil War (known by southerners as the War of Northern Aggression) up to _Glory_ in 1989 promoted this polite, romantic _Gone With the Wind_ view that the south was full of some good people who would rise again. All positive messaging with no accounting whatsoever for slavery, sedition or Jim Crow.
Southerners have been welcomed back into mainstream American culture but too many have chosen to isolate themselves in their own ignorance and reject any outsiders. But Bill is wondering that maybe comedians or name callers are the root of the problem. Southerners have had 150 years to tolerate other groups. Some have.

I absolutely loved this show, there was a lot of truth in what was said. Issues that weren't brought up were destroying statues and monuments. Racism and regionalism are issues that may always be murky and hard to fully grasp or cure. I like to use Martin Luther King logic that is not the color of their skin but the content of their character. I think there are some that like wallowing in the mud or racism and regionalism. It is better to leave the past and move to a more toward equality, acceptance and prosperity. It may not happen until Jesus returns.

Isn't it funny that people who talk about diversity all day fail to accept the south and it's cultural traits? Shouldn't they be happy about the flavors and colors the south adds to the mix?

One of the greatest Southern authors and commenters as well as a humorist, Pulitzer prize winner Lewis Grizzard stated, American by birth and Southern by the grace of God! How is that for pride? Check out the concentration of intelligence and technology in the southeast United States. The world's busiest airport, the highest concentration of PhD, computer scientists and oh yeah by the way will still open the door for a young lady, or a family, elder couple and YOU! Welcome to the South y'all. 💕

It's humans that need to wake up from the "nap"... Stop waiting to be saved, and take responsibility for their own lives. "Christ" is a CONSCIOUSNESS LEVEL that we are ALL supposed to achieve. It is not a person that is going to "come back" and save everyone. We are the savior's that everyone is waiting for. That same power exist in every last one of us. We are supposed to wake up and understand that. And take responsibility for it. And nothing will change until people wake up to Yeshua's REAL MESSAGE. Not the extremely "bastardized version of his message, that was created by Roman Satan worshipers, thousands of years ago... The power to change the world exist in every single one of us. But it will not happen until humanity is ready to take responsibility for their lives. And stop hiding behind religions. When all they really do is give a false sense of security. While the demons do whatever they want, unchallenged.

This information is 90% WRONG! I was born in southern West Virginia, still live here and have travelled the world and am always amazed that black people don't know that we became a state in 1863 because we objected to SLAVERY PEOPLE!!! GET IT??? WTF!!! My family all fought for the North and fought against the Virginia slave owner's. How about John Brown...A preacher who led 100 men on a suicide mission to destroy the South's main arsenal in Harper's Ferry? All 100 died. How about my family who worked in the "Underground railroad" to help slaves escape and approximately 40,000 white men from West Virginia died during the Civil War. As far as education...We rank in the TOP TEN in ACT college entrance exams and also, the average coal miner makes $150,000 a year. How about Dr John Nash from Southern WV who broke the Russian code at Princeton or Kathern Johnson...The black Lady who was in "Hidden Figures" who's mathematics enabled NASA'S Apollo space missions? Or the movie "October Skie's" about three 16 year old boy's from southern WV who propelled rocket's in the 1950's higher than the US Government? I know of exactly 0 people who DON'T have the internet...0 people. As a matter of fact, WV was the FIRST STATE to be fully fiber optic. As for me, I have two advanced engineering degrees and my son has His doctorate in Nuclear Engineering and is a senior development engineer for Huntington-Ingall's nuclear powered aircraft carriers in Norfolk, VA. Hey Bill...How about a scientific debate with Me on any subject? I just wish BLACK PEOPLE knew at least SOME factual history and you too Bill the city dweller who will STARVE to death in the event on an EMP, Solar Flare or Civil War 2.
