    I first discovered VH with the 5150 album.
    So while I do love the Frankie in all it's various forms as the origin point - it's the Kramer style guitar that has my heart.
    The clean simplicity of it, the stripes and, to me, the iconic 5150 sticker behind the Floyd Rose.
    The EVH versions of this, with the more traditional headstock don't do it for me - it must have the banana or it isn't right.
    Of course - it means I'll need to get one of these and stripe it up :)

    According to an article on the DiMarzio website about the development of Ed's pickups for his MusicMan guitar. In Ed's main Kramer 5150 that he gave them to compare the pickups with was actually broken but still working and had been that way for years after Ed said he had gotten the high E stuck underneath the pickup cover.

    Bought an identical example earlier this year...and I can confirm that EVERYTHING you said here IS TRUE!
    It has ALL the ingredients necessary to get that '80s EVH tone, for sure! No wonder Eddie was always smiling (even as you were) while wielding this weapon! I've had no issues of any kind (ok, maybe the frets coulda been polished before delivery). It appears that Gibson knew to leave well-enough alone, and "sent" it authentically!

    on top of that.... would you go with one of those Kramers or with a EVH 5150 guitars or the yellow/black striped EVH?

    Not only was I rocking a number of Kramers including a few Barettas in the 80s but also a number of Charvels and other similar shredstick superstrats. There really is something to singlebucker axes. You get more tone because you have more wood. I owned a lot of guitars and I noticed this. I wouldn't split hairs over it. If you play a multibucker as and it sounds great and works for you, stick with it. But I also recommend checking out axes like this Kramer. They are straight ahead rock machines that deliver the goods.

    Original Baretta bodies were bookmatched eastern hard rock maple. Pacers were alder, a huge difference. Eddie's first guitars were pacer bodies, but he endorsed the Baretta as " The best guitar you can buy today." in an iconic ad. Not sure he ever used one though. I've had two originals from '84, one was meh and the other like a high frequency bell. Two problems with the originals: The pickup wasn't wax potted so tended to squeal and the scarf joint was too close to where the neck joined the headstock and they used glue which tended to bend the headstocks back a bit. So, they often fretted out at the first fret, including my keeper. Another fun fact, Eddie didn't want anyone copying his tone, so he insisted all Barettas came with rosewood fretboards as opposed to the maple he used. I was working for the national retailer of guitars and in the early '90s was in touch with the Jackson custom shop weekly, so I had a neck made by them to my specs, unique and with a quartersawn maple neck, fretboard and headstock. It's been my #1 guitar for over thirty years. Been to three namm shows, worked in 4 music stores, played since the '70s, for my tastes this really is the the best guitar ever.

    • @kurtbader9711

      @@biohazard8295 You have to make a price/performance decision. Even though many people will say this is bunk, you have to get a good one as well. Guitar tones vary greatly even if they're made from the same tree. To me, and many will agree, nothing matches the metal formulation of the original Floyds. Pickups are another issue. Find something you like that you can afford, and begin your journey. Bon Voyage.

      On mine (identical to the one Dagan is playing here; purchased earlier this year) although it's not a routed-in FR, it IS set up to float (running parallel to the body...when you dial-in the trem springs). The ergo's and action are excellent with this set up...no negatives! Early FRs were so thick, you couldn't run 'em this way on installs of the day, as it killed both the ergo's and action...AND shredded the pinkie-side of yr palm!

  • @loouuni
    @loouuni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey guys I own the same guitar. Got a question: Do you have your Floyd Rose parallel to the body so you can still pull it a little bit up? Or did you tightened the springs so it's not parallell anymore and it lays on the body? Because I've never had a non-recessed Floyd and I'm still not sure how to set up it correctly. :P

    • @timothycooper5660
      @timothycooper5660 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi you can have it parallel to the body of the guitar, so you get bedt action on the guitar. i hope this helps buddy keep rockin

    • @howardthrust
      @howardthrust 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On mine, I'm using all three trem springs (running parallel, not angled), standard .009s and tuned to Eb Standard. The trem is properly "floating", running parallel to the body and holds tune quite well, to boot!

    Does this one have neck like the original Baretta, or like the Pacer? I had a Pacer, as a HS graduation gift to myself in 1985, but i always wished i had spent more for the higher-end model. The Baretta neck just had a much nicer feel. Pre-internet, i was under the impression the Pacer had a flatter fretboard and the Baretta was more radiused? I have a Wolfgang now, but i may have to get one of these, to paint with some subtle stripes-like a clear gloss on matte thing (or vice versa).

    I don't know about the 84 or Baretta, but in Baretta Special one can desolder one leg of the green cap on the potentiometer to get rid of treble bleed. I personally don't like it in on Baretta Special, it's too brittle sounding so without it it acts like regular volume knob, and it works very well of you are looking for a swell. Hmmm...it even rhymes.

My point was that the first superstrats were made by Charvel, often with outsourced parts like Boogie Bodies which became Warmoth. My sister's boyfriend back in the '70s owned one of the aluminum necked Kramers. Man, that thing was heavier than my '84 Baretta, and was definitely not a superstrat.

      @@scottdunn2178 Right, so Wayne built the first superstrats, often with outsourced parts like Boogie bodies which became Warmoth. My sister's boyfriend in the late '70s had an aluminum neck Kramer which was super heavy, heavier than my original '84 Baretta which is all maple. Then Grover sold the company to Fender, the very guitars that were made to be better versions. Darkest day in guitardom ever. BTW, even the early Jacksons and the 80's MIJ ones still used the Charvel logo. He only named the Randy Rhoads guitars Jackson because they were so radical he didn't want to taint the Charvel name if they didn't go over well. Obviously they did in a big way, and Jackson became the official name.

Take that guitar, The 84, put a tilted pickup in it like the Baretta Vintage, change the name to 1983 Reissue, and slap an Inspired By Gibson price tag on it. $2100.00. Would have to sell 3 of The 84s and Vintage models to make what you would by ripping off a single Re-issue buyer.
