      My first memory of you was the Anderton's Orange Micro Terror demo. Ever since then? I was a massive fan!
      Later on I learned that, whilst I could do certain things on guitar? I didn't know what they technically were or called.
      So I ended up spending a long time backtracking and decoding a lot of technique, scales, and modes.
      There was also a tremendous amount of painful "imposter syndrome".
      I play multiple instruments by ear...
      I also have ASPD soo...
      Focusing on one instrument fully needless to say was rather difficult.
      So the "Jack of all trades, master of none." complex would at times really FK with me.
      However, over time I discovered that my overall skillset was inevitably tuned best towards recording/engineering others rather than attempting to be just another aspiring rockstar.
      I've also had opportunity at the local Guitar Center to step in as a part time drum tutor.
      Vigorous aspirations and dreams are always an intoxicatingly good thing, but ultimately accepting realism and one's overall place can be a humbling and difficult pill to swallow indeed.
      IMO?
      I will alway be an over the top punk rocker, but teaching & passing the torch to the next generation is now what fills me with the most joy and ambition.
      Great FN video Chappers!
      Much love & respect!
      Cheers!

    My biggest regret is that I didn’t do, seriously, what I’m doing now, gigging, writing, teaching etc when I was younger. I took a big gap between my twenties and early forties until I started up again properly. I’m still broke even after all those years of shift work, but I feel like I wasted a lot of time. Hopefully I’m making up for it now and doing what I’m supposed to be doing,

      Interesting stuff and I think as an amateur guitarist (now 52 yo), who toured when I was younger with a death metal band but then found enjoyment as a guitarist for last twenty plus years playing in a covers band in pubs and private functions, that I didn't study well enough in my late teens and became an almost lazy player that almost accepted the level I was at. I did have a similar experience as your last point in being asked to join a band in the Midlands who had some minor success, but I was scared at 21 of leaving home and my job at the time!

    Here I am in my late 60's and I had a big Box-O-Regrets which had been bursting at the seams for decades. But you know what? Stuff has been evaporating from the box without me noticing. All those roads not taken, experiences missed out on. I'm pretty much content with where I wound up, so I don't really regret not taking those other options. There are just too many options to fit in a single lifetime. We climb the tree and have to repeatedly make choices about which of many branches to follow, leaving most of the tree unexplored by necessity. If we wind up in a place we're comfortable with - yay we won! Congrats on winning!

    I may be the odd one out, but I don't believe in regrets. Because.... I cannot use them in any way or shape or form. They will never do me any good other than bugging me day and night, if they're severe enough.
    I do believe in experience, though, so I can learn from past mistakes and hopefully make less mistakes going forward. But I honestly don't regret any of the past mistakes, I've made (and they're plenty, trust me) or things I didn't do.
    That being said - I love the way, you use your regrets - to pass them on to your audience as teaching material (hopefully so).
    Cheers Chappers, love how you conduct yourself and pass your knowledge to us.

    Oh Chappers, that last regret of “the pain of putting off the pain”; every time… every damn time. As you said “putting of the thing your supposed to do out of fear is more painful in the long run than just doing the thing in the first place” I really let out a singular laugh that carried so much air of relief. Thanks for this video you’re an epic human being.

  • @brettmarlar4154
    @brettmarlar4154 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

    My takeaways from this are:
    1. Youth is wasted on the young.
    Basically this means that young people are prone to fall into the trap of living in the now with no regard for the future. "Even though I should be doing this thing, there will be time to do that later, because right now (and only now) I have a chance to do this." Of course, these little distractions can lead to amazing life experiences and teach us other valuable lessons (like not losing your focus on what you truly want in life), but can, and likely will derail your dream.
    2. Don't sweat the petty.
    It's important to be able to recognize when someone has a valid criticism of you/what you do, and someone who is just seeking self-validation through needlessly tearing you down. Plus one has to realize that you're not going to please everyone all the time. Life simply isn't fair, and things don't always workout the way you want, so you need to know when to throw up your hands and say "I can't help you".
    3. Sometimes it's better to ignore your fears and take opportunities when they arise.
    These are harder to recognize than many realize. Sometimes we let the feeling that "this is too good to be true" stop us from taking the risk. There is a chance that you could become the next big thing, and there's a chance that you could end up making millions for a company without seeing any benefit from it. The only way to know is to take the risk. Heck, you take a risk just leaving your house everyday. Some just come with higher consequences if you lose. But loss is a far better teacher than success. It's what you learn from that loss that defines where to go from there.
    At the end of the day it's rather trivial to regret the choices we made, because maybe we might be better off, maybe we wouldn't. (Provided that the choice didn't end up hurting others around you.) It's far more important to enjoy the time we have now, as we don't know how much we'll get.

      One interpretation is that youth is wasted on the young. Another interpretation is that youth is not only for doing the things that older people value. If Rob had focused 100% on playing music at age 18, he might have missed out on some critical aspects of social development, which might have held him back for his whole life.
      I took the opposite path from Rob. I focused almost exclusively on school from age 17 to 28. I achieved a lot, but now I have a hard time relating to other adults. That has definitely held me back personally and professionally.

    • @brettmarlar4154
      @brettmarlar4154 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rlm4471 That is fair, but my point isn't that a young person should only focus on the important things, but to find balance. Sure it's ok to blow thing off for an adventure occasionally, provided that doesn't derail your end goals. If anything, young people get too wrapped up in the moment.

    • @rlm4471
      @rlm4471 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@brettmarlar4154 Maybe youth is right time to get wrapped up in the moment. If you say that youth is wasted on the young, that implies that what young people instinctively do with their time is not optimal, but maybe that's not the right way to look at it. Maybe what young people instinctively do is what they need to be doing to develop correctly.

    • @brettmarlar4154
      @brettmarlar4154 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rlm4471 I'm not saying to not be in the moment, and experience it for all it has to offer. I'm also not discouraging connecting with others to build social skills or anything like that. You're strawmanning my point. I'm saying not to get too wrapped up in the moment to where any long-term repercussions aren't considered.
      Young people don't typically grasp the reality that the time we have is very limited. Many take the phrase "live for today, as tomorrow may never come" as a pass to throw caution to the wind. That is what I mean by "youth is wasted on the young". It took decades for me to understand and appreciate what that phrase truly means.

    Many years ago I had the "opportunity" to be world class in a sport. I was young, discovered girls, alcohol and "other" stuff.... Distracted, taken down a different path. Do I regret it? Hell no! My life has, like many, been a rollercoaster of extremes. Today, 40 years on from my near world champion status, I can look back and say, I survived, I made it! I have a beautiful life, with a beautiful wife, in a beautiful country, living the dream in my 60s, feeling like I am still 19! Life is a trip through the time and a lot of situations where you have to make decisions, some bad and some good and this is a part of your development. To be happy with your life, you have to be aware what you have done and why and you have to learn out of all the bad and good things that happened to you. There is no guarantee and there will be no guarantee for a good and happy life. It's all in you. Everywhere you go, no matter what you do, you take always everything with you, because it's in you. Being happy starts with your mind set. Think forward, see forward and try to develop in a way you want. It's not easy and fear isn't always a good advisor. Don't build your own prison. Try to live your dreams, follow your heart, think positive.
    I have had a lot of situations where I suffered and didn't know how to get out these bad situations. But I kept on going and changed my life in the way that is good for me. I still have dreams and wishes and try to learn and develop myself. Well, I'm old, but not wise. I still make some wrong decisions. Sometimes I just feel like a young boy in an old body, but I can live with that. 🙃

    To regret two from experience I'd like to add: be careful of other people setting new or more goals for you. When things go well people will tell you there is even more to achieve, be it higher levels in the area you're good in, or new levels in another one, since you are doing so well in this one.

    The dreads were definitely nothing to regret (I think regrets are a waste of time, anyway. I'm more inclined to think that a person should try and learn from their mistakes, so that they don't repeat them endlessly, and just move on) 🙂
    You've had quite a few opportunities come your way, man. I'm sure it's been quite an interesting journey. More power to ya! You've entertained and informed me along the way. I think I started following you (with Andertons) about eight years ago, or so.

    My greatest regret is having watched this video because it reminded me of all my regrets in life which were numerous... damn it.... but seriously, all those failures and mistakes we did, indeed shaped us to the person we are now and transported us to the place we are in this moment. If you like where you are and who you are, you obviously did the right things at the right time and in the end there were no failures or mistakes, just lessons and guideposts.

    to your third point, you ever see two dogs bark super aggressively at each other through a fence and then you open the fence up and the dogs stop barking and just sniff each other and completely chill out because theres no longer a fence there? thats people on the internet lol

    The first regret is not a regret. It is a mandatory phase in life you have to go through, to realise what it is. I studied 6 years, got 2 different degrees succesfully, found work and wondered after 3 years if ’that was it’. Ended up quitting my job and doing the same as you only to realise it’s not a solution, it’s just a phase in life...

    Great video, Rob! I'm glad that you've come out the other side of the panic attacks and tribulations of online trolls. This advice (Although sometimes we have to live these experiences and regrets to truly incorporate them) is all very gratefully received.
    I regret slacking off when I was on a music course as a young man, I was playing with some phenomenal musicians and I felt priveleged to be placed on a course with them. Rather than concentrate on working hard on my theoretical knowledge and technical proficiency I ended up getting my girlfriend pregnant and dropping the course. I don't regret for a second having a child, as I'm sure you can relate, they are the stars in a black ocean's sky that keep us sailing. But at times I rue my lack of discipline.
    I like to think that now, with mileage under my belt, a couple more children and a reinvigorated passion for playing guitar and composing again, that I will be able to achieve a sense of confidence in actually releasing some music without too much pressure on myself to endlessly procrastinate and perfect.
    Kind regards,
    Rich

    Agree with everything you said Rob. As my father used to say wisdom comes with age. I could have gone to the USA when I was 20 but at that age I felt I was too young and naive. As such, I never went and don't regret it. Always interesting listening to your videos, Rob. Keep up the good work.

    Mistakes made in earnest shouldn't haunt us, they're just potential lessons.
    Regrets are an unaffordable retrospective rabbit hole of mental anguish.
    Apologise to anyone we've hurt, forgive ourselves and move forward.

    I can respect the "hold on less go back and assess" vibe you had. Completely agree with the burn out when you don't set goals bit. Its hard to recognize when you are in that moment I found but clear when you look at it. Would be interesting to see how you would approach planning for that now.

    Hi Rob I am a big fan of yours, especially of your 👍 playing technique , it's a massive talent that you have which few other guitarist, s can honestly boast. I may have made some comments on your past videos videos that my have seemed negative, but it was aimed at the equipment that you used and not you personally. I am full of admiration for you skill and talent . Perhaps you need to pursue your sonic Quest and fulfill your dreams of living in America , isn't that where we are all trying to get to in our dreams. Good luck on your sonic journey I Know you will get to where you want to be in the end. Best Regards. John.

    Rob, you are in the place that you are because of the decisions you made - whenever you made them. Had you come to America when you had the chance earlier in your career, you might not be the person that you are now. You're an incredibly nice person. You're a giving person (based upon the many lessons and directions that you give to guitarists and future stars that may gain a ton from what you say to them). I played guitar from age 12 through 22 or so. Then I set it down, found my true love, married her and somehow 39 years just zipped past in the blink of an eye. We were blessed with triplets (if you can actually be blessed with triplets), and my guitar came out very infrequently to be played. I still have the guitar as a matter of fact I had it thoroughly inspected it's all rosewood front back sides fretboard included All I needed to do was to put some new tuners on it which tuners and new strings all done for me and checking out etc it cost me $99 US.
    Finally I found myself with a opportunity to retire early from a job that I was very good at and made a lot of money at, so I found myself with lots of time and nothing that I had to do. I painted for a while and I really enjoyed it but I wanted to buy a steel string guitar - the guy at the local shop was showing me a bunch of $249 to $299 guitars. After testing each one of these seven or eight guitars I finally turned around and on the pack wall was a ton of guitars that were extremely expensive then I picked up a guitar without looking at the price tag and I strummed it. It was like angels singing in unison. I had never heard anything like it from any instrument in my life. Right then I said I'll buy it told the guy to wrap it up and he went through keyed it all in as he's doing so he says oh this is an acoustic electric. It was $750 US, I paid cash so he threw in a whole lot of goodies extra strings all the pics you could ever imagine a tuner a few other things. I love this guitar and I play it almost daily right now. It turned out that it was a Martin six string. Since then I bought a Martin 12 string and I couldn't be happier with those two guitars. I purchased several fender Stratocaster telecaster etc and I love them equally but nothing will ever take the place of my six string Martin. So I'm looking at it I'm definitely where I should be right now. That's why I think you are exactly where you should be right now - God has a way of making these things work out, always.
    Love you like brother, Greg

    "The putting it off is more painful than just doing it" yup and this could happen at multiple times in your life and it you may not even realize it. I have a board with 15 songs on it. 15 rough demos I've been meaning to start drums on for 2 years but living is just too tiring as of late. You're right though. Using my little free time to recharge feels necessary but I'd be happier if I just dug into this thing that used to be more important than anything to me. I even bought an electric kit to entice myself so I wouldn't have to program with a mouse. It's dusty lol. Guitar is the fun part though. It'll be worth it to get there.
