Before Eddie passed away I had never heard him speak I never heard any interviews or anything just heard the sweet noise that came from the amp. Yet I still feel like I lost a dear friend.
Eddie Van Halen showed me that a poor half-Indonesian guy like me could be an amazing guitar player, he is a huge inspiration for me. I miss him already...
Eddie is my hero. His music has accompanied me throughout my life. I play guitar because of Eddie. I own an EVH Frankie, a Peavey Wolfgang and an EVH Star. I have 3 pairs of EVH high top sneakers and numerous tshirts. My lovely family have made me EVH striped cakes for most of my birthdays. His playing was astounding, but it was his ability to play so effortlessly whilst jumping, sliding and dancing across the stage with the biggest grin fixed to his face. He was a true original. The master. He is greatly missed.
thats awesome man, yea its been tough to lose eddie a bummer to say the least. this past july i bought the white kramer 1984 reissue, i'm glad i did, now i have something to remember eddie everyday play it and pay homage to him
It's Eddie's fault I'm a guitar player! 9 years old in early 1984, I saw the Jump video and when Eddie started into his solo, between the impossibly cool looking guitar, and his infectious "look how much fun I'm having" smile, my fate was sealed; I MUST learn to play guitar! Thank you Eddie Van Halen!
If it weren't for Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, and my dad I wouldn't have ever picked up a guitar. The first time I heard EVH as a child changed my life forever.
Eddie used the Variac to take the 120 volt AC wall current down to around 85 to 90 volts which kinda starves out the voltage supply to the grids & heaters of the preamp & output tubes & results in that more loose, slightly mushy compressed, snarly sound we all love. Early on he used to lie & say he actually raised the 120 volts to 140 volts which caused many guitar players chasing his tone to fry their transformers, filter caps & other components. Dave Friedman actually had his hands on Eddie's Super Lead & said it was bone stock except for the addition of a higher value cathode capacitor on the bright channel preamp tube which was added by the legendary Jose Arredondo to give it a bit more bass (and as a result, a touch more gain). The second way Edward controlled his overall output volume was that he would use a dummy load box after the Marshall head, in effect making the Marshall a preamp for the entire system. The output of the load box would then run through his effects which would then be sent to the input stage of a power amplifier, most often an H & H V800 MOS-FET model. The speaker output of his Marshall was set at 8 ohms and the dummy load box resistance was set to 20 ohms to help ease the strain of the amplifier being run at full volume. Eddie also only used Sylvania 6CA7 power tubes. These are the main ingredients in his tonal recipe. Most of my big-name fellow amp builder/modder friends agree that from the Fair Warning album on Eddie had Jose add in his "Jose Master Volume" diode clipping mod which accounts for the difference in gain & aggression heard after VH1. At one point in recording Fair Warning Eddie possibly turned up his Variac over 120 volts because his Marshall caught on fire. Aside from all of this, Eddie sounded like Eddie no matter what he played through. The real magic of EVH was in his soul & his fingers were the vehicle for that magic. Rest In Paradise Eddie Van Halen!!!
The load box was a Palmer PDI-03, also used by Def Leppard and others. It has analog speaker simulated outs along with not simulated outs with separate volume control to send the signal to power amp(s). The term "brown sound" was derived from a problem at city's power grid giving lower power to homes at night and the lights were dimmed and instead of bright yellow (back then) they had a brownish color. They called it "Brownout" instead of "Blackout" (no power and no lights at all). So, lower power to guitar amp led to Brown sound!
Earth was touched by an intergalactic journeyer by the name of EVH. He is a brightly shining star in the night sky. Untouchable, but life affirming-- standing on top of the world !!!

Fantastic tribute. What a tremendous loss. You are very talented and your love for EVH really shows. Very comprehensive gear guide. His old Marshall Superlead was indeed stock for the first few albums, with an attenuator between it and the speaker cabinet purely to not make the studio's microphones just give up on life. If I remember it right, the sound engineer actually tried to "mask" the effect the cheap attenuator had on his tone as much as possible in editing, and he didn't use the attenuator live because there was no need to quieten anything down. The only way to get the same tone out of a Superlead without post-production is basically to turn the amp to stadium volume, with no attenuation. Hence the modding and the different amps - they were all attempts to get that early tone at less than lethal volumes. RIP Eddie, you were an inspiration, a legend, and a major cause of tinnitus.

However, I notice how we all come alive when discussing EVH. Van Halen fans helping each other get through this very difficult time. Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and love for Eddie🎸 Btw... Gorgeous Guitars
Great lively playing that's passionate as you demo gear. As a guitarist for book trailers about comics who's influenced by Eddie Van Halen and as one looking for inspiration, your playing is so useful since you clarify how equipment gives certain sounds. Cheers!
I love watching someone like this who can really show us who got them to start playing guitar! Like another is Ola Englund and his Dimebag stuff. I love watching him play Dime stuff and unleash the inner 14 year-old guitar player
This is the second time Ive watched this video, the first being when Eddie had just died and I broke down crying. How Dagen held it together was heartbreaking. I bet it took afew takes! Eddie is the only "celebrity" that actually devestated me on hearing of them passing. I think you showed real class the way you handled this, and you didnt monetise the video.
The way he signs off is the tone of voice we should still use when talking about Eddie. It's sad that he's gone, but I don't think he'd want people to slow him down. He always had that smile when he was playing or even just talking about guitar because he knew how many people were musicians because of him. Can you imagine that feeling? The rush of knowing that not only do you get to do what you love more than anything, but that it made you a part of history. Having a lasting effect on the way an instrument and all it's accessories developed. Being the catalyst for a large part of the pop culture landscape. When you think "cool, 80s metal shred guitar solo" it's because of Eddie. Imagine being Mickey Mouse and Mozart at the same time; a cultural icon and a focal point in music history. Zakk Wylde shared a clip of Eddie saying "keep playing, man. You GOTTA keep playing. That's the only thing their is: music, man! Keep playin, alright?! ...I'm gonna come lookin for ya if ya don't!" Robert Johnson. Les Paul. Jimi Hendrix. Eddie Van Halen. 'Nuff said.

The two paired together are absolutely perfect. My other guitars are Gibsons, SG Standard and Les Paul Trad Pro 2. They love the EL34 head just as much. Great video. Thank you for making this.
Thanks for the history lesson. I was blessed enough to have gone to every tour of Van Halen's all the way upto 1984 including the 80 US Festival in CA. Van Halens stage shows were EPIC! Even with Roth forgetting to sing,... a lot! You have to be a master musician to play with a showman like Dave. Love them all! Where have all the good times gone!

you may not sound exactly like EVH but you've managed to put your style and the influence eddie had on you together to create a killer tone I believe that all guitarists use the sounds of the artists they like and blend what they know together to create a unique tone that they like best we can't bring back a musician who's died but we can honour their legacy in many ways many of our favourite rock / metal musicians would have drawn their inspiration from Eddie and without him some of the popular metal bands from the 90's may not have been around if Eddie wasn't a musician
My first time seeing this channel. I was able to see the genuine heartbreak at the beginning of this video and the genuine love , respect and admiration you had for the man in the following 45 minutes. Very well done gents. RIP EVH... still hurts to write that...
Eddie also started me down the road to guitar infamy! When I heard VH1 as a kid I was blown away. "Eruption" literally short circuited my brain. I learned to play because of that album and that man. Over the years I was further influenced by the late great Randy Rhoads and the amazing Jason Becker but Eddie was, and always will be, number one for me. Its hard to believe I'll never hear any of my three guitar heroes play again, but hardest of all is knowing Eddie is gone. It still shocks and upsets me a year and a half later. RIP Eddie. Love you man.
Dagan... stellar! Saving this. I recently purchased the new EVHIII EL-34 S 2/12 Combo 50 watt. That amp will blow your roof off! Own 23 guitar's but not a Wolfgang. Next up! Getting a Stealth, no killswitch

Man, I can't believe he's gone for over two years already. I'm 53 and FINALLY learning to play his stuff. I never thought I could before. My son started learning 80's music and watching him do it inspired me so here we go! Dagan, you’ve forgotten the Makita power drill for the intro to Poundcake!! Great tribute, Eddie was one of the reasons I started playing guitar, your videos and enthusiasm were some of the reasons why I started playing again. Keep up the good work. RIP Eddie 🙏
Haha sorry about that! It has to be a vintage one too, so it doesn’t cut off too quick when you’re off the trigger! 😂
Dagan, brilliant, heartfelt intro. Devastated.
The only PMTVUK uploads worth watching are those presented by Dagan, imo. Great job, as always. EVH RIP
That was awesome dude sorry for your loss I feel your pain graduating high school in 84 as a drummer you know Alex man he's damn good to not ever get noticed LOL he lit his sticks on fire to try to get noticed back there his brother's just so unbelievable on that guitar
Great video! Glad you decided to put it out.
Thank you so much for doing this tribute to Eddie Dagan. RIP Eddie. Cheers Man!!
I just want to thank you... I love watching other musicians around the world. Celebrating Mr. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen’s spirit. Sure, we’re broken hearted. However, I notice how we all come alive when discussing EVH. Van Halen fans helping each other get through this very difficult time.
Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and love for Eddie🎸
Btw...
Chorus was used to great effect on intro to Hear About it Later. Love your playing by the way, and a great overview of the EVH great. Thank you!
My favorite VH track at the moment! I love when Eddie arpeggiates with those interesting voicings. Very underrated aspect of his playing.
Hear about it later is flanger listen to the isolated guitar track on TH-cam.
Great tribute, great video, fantastic playing.
Beautiful job! The first 2 minutes were exactly how we all feel (in my opinion).
Keep playin, alright?! ...I'm gonna come lookin for ya if ya don't!"
Robert Johnson. Les Paul. Jimi Hendrix. Eddie Van Halen. 'Nuff said.
As always, beautiful job Dagan. Eddie would be proud. RIP to the G.O.A.T. 🐐
Dagan…I understand that you are not EVH but I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years and I just can’t say how much I learn from you. You are truly one of my inspirations. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for this. Amazing playing and great job showcasing the full range of Eddie sounds.
I've been waiting so long for this video, eddie inspired me to play!
This deserves 5,150 thumbs up. Thank you.
I share your adulation. Since 1980, for me.
So awesome. Thank you so much for this tribute EVH 4 Ever 🎸
Dagan your an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to your knowledge and research on EVH is absolutely phenomenal I'm an amid fan of your PMTV channel keep up the fantastic work it's a great pleasure to watch this EVH special
It’s amazing how much you know about Ed, how he played in every way, his gear and all..
wow! Just amazing. So much history..
Exactly what I’ve been looking for
I ordered my 50w EL34 head and matching 2x12 cab two days before we lost King Edward. It is a fabulous amplifier. Last year, I pre-ordered the 5150 Standard Stealth guitar. It is a fabulous guitar. The two paired together are absolutely perfect. My other guitars are Gibsons, SG Standard and Les Paul Trad Pro 2. They love the EL34 head just as much.
Great video. Thank you for making this.
Excellent content!! It was great to watch!! Thank you
Thanks for the history lesson.
This has been by far the most informative gear video I have ever seen. Thank you sir, much appreciated. 🤘🤘🤘
RIP KING EDDIE
You sir have done EVH proud!!! Take a bow! Great vid!!
Eddie changed guitar players forever. I remember when their debut album was released every guitar player went nuts, he was the best ever.
Eddie was the first guitarist I looked up to when I was a kid and he’s still one of my guitar heroes, I was devastated when I heard about his passing but I’m still grateful for all the music he’s given us over the years and for helping me become the guitarist I am today, so thank you so much Eddie We’ll miss you greatly now go give heaven an Eruption of its own
“It’s like the death of Superman.”
Poop funny
Something Funny. When Ed wanted to leave be w Kiss. What would he be VH man superhero with mask Lol. I DONT THINK SO GENE
No Edward was real
@@bobravenscraft5376 He felt unreal to me. Everything else sounded real and of this earth. His music sounded unreal. Sounded like it came from a parallel universe, yet still melodic to human ears.
True story: As a kid, when I playing, I would tune my B string the same way. I didn't know that I was doing something Eddie did, I just knew it sounded better like you demonstrated at 42:07. He influenced me and I didn't even know it. What a hero!
Loved the video from a couple of weeks ago. Well done Dagan!
Brilliant! I've watched dozens of EVH "tribute" videos since his unfortunate death but this is by far the finest. I can, will, watch this bombastic video over and over again. 42 dislikes?! WTF!
Great video! Your enthusiasm is infectious and you get top marks on your knowledge.
Nice tribute! He was my hero since the first album and like many of you we all carried on the VH flame through thick and thin. When Van Halen owned MTV in 1984 it was like our team finally winning the Super Bowl! Im still devastated living in a world without Ed. Rip brother.
Thanks man. You made that fun.
Hello, Excellent video! You really paid homage to him musically through his gear rundown. People like you will keep his talent shinning for a long time. Take care.
This is easily my favorite guitar channel. The competitors dont even come close.
you may not sound exactly like EVH but you've managed to put your style and the influence eddie had on you together to create a killer tone
I believe that all guitarists use the sounds of the artists they like and blend what they know together to create a unique tone that they like best
we can't bring back a musician who's died but we can honour their legacy in many ways
many of our favourite rock / metal musicians would have drawn their inspiration from Eddie and without him some of the popular metal bands from the 90's may not have been around if Eddie wasn't a musician
My first time seeing this channel. I was able to see the genuine heartbreak at the beginning of this video and the genuine love , respect and admiration you had for the man in the following 45 minutes. Very well done gents. RIP EVH... still hurts to write that...
Well done!! Very fun video
Best review of EVH gear I’ve seen. As far as what they do. Thank you. I miss king Eddie.
Respectively done & informative too. Nice one.
Dagan, please make this into a series! Thank you all for the great content as always.
Cracking job on the video, great insight. Thanks!
Dagan... stellar! Saving this. I recently purchased the new EVHIII EL-34 S 2/12 Combo 50 watt. That amp will blow your roof off! Own 23 guitar's but not a Wolfgang. Next up! Getting a Stealth, no killswitch
Best pre-amp in the Biz...IMO
Loved this!!!!
Thanks Dagan and all at PMTVUK!!!!
"you can tickle everyone's pickle with an EVH", That may be the best quote I have heard on TH-cam.
Your frankenstrat from 16 kills it dude hell's yeah mad props kicking off the video with that token from your youth really made this tribute proper... I know exactly how you feel for me when I saw last Billie from green day at Woodstock on MTV I knew exactly what my goal was and I've been a punker guitarist ever since...
AWESOME VIDEO ! It must be an amazing feeling to be able to just pick up a guitar and play Eddie's music. 💖😍💯👍👍
Absolutely great host. Genuine, funny, charming and knowledgeable. I think the only thing missing is a co-host to bounce ideas off and elevate some of the humour and passion. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent review and died but I feel that with another voiceThe PMT channel could be taken to the next level.
This was GREAT!... Loved every minute of it!!
Awesome Video. Thank you! May Eddie rest in Peace. Condolences to the family!
It's sad that ive loved evh since I was 5 and I'm 14, he inspired me to play guitar and im devastated hes gone 😭💔
Can we have a 2 hour video of you playing that rig? , it sounds so beautiful, and the playing is very satisfying
Awesome video ❤️ rip EVH ❤️
This was very, very fun to watch!
Great video Dagen, I learned a lot there 🤟
great job DAGAN,,HELLO FROM TEXAS.
Hello from the UK!
Man, I can't believe he's gone for over two years already. I'm 53 and FINALLY learning to play his stuff. I never thought I could before. My son started learning 80's music and watching him do it inspired me so here we go!
Variac - reduced VOLATGE at the wall plug from 120V to wherever he liked it, maybe 108V for example.
5150 - CA Code for admitting somene to the psychiatric ward against their will
Thank you for sharing this! He meant so much to us. I haven’t even slept good this week. Totally devastated!😥❤️✝️🙏
I am a massive Dagan fan! Awesome video's dude !
