  • They are some of India’s most picturesque towns, sited along the Himalayan range. But now, the ground is sinking beneath them.
In January 2023, buildings in the important pilgrim town of Joshimath collapsed, causing thousands to flee their homes in the dead of night. In the aftermath, over 800 structures were found to have developed cracks, and many were condemned by the authorities. Poor construction practices and climate change have become an existential threat for Joshimath.
The plight of Joshimath has sounded the alarm bell for other settlements in similarly precarious positions. Will this spell doom for India’s mountain towns?

Basically the officials and uneducated people ignored a scientific report and constructed without any thought. As usual the extremely poor urban planning that is prevalent all over India, with not even proper sewerage and drainage and poor quality construction has contributed to yet another disaster.

Great Documentary. Just to let you know there has been a blanket ban on reporting of the Joshimath Saga.
The main problem why the town is sinking is too much of Hydel Energy Projects have been setup in its vicinity.
The Ecology of the town is fragile, once the digging and blasting goes on in the mountains to set up a Hydel project it disturbs the fragile Ecology not to mention the huge water loss from underground Aquifers due to constant digging resulting in sinking of the town

My family is from Uttarakhand, recently my uncle constructed a two bedroom home in one of the cities but he spent more than year, he made sure he did the construction in a way that does not damage the environment, he said many people from outside of Uttarakhand are doing construction unethically in the name of 'development', eventually the Pahadi people (indigenous mountain people) will all be displaced from their home in the future if this type of development along with climate change, continues.

@@soniag4516 Its not really the same at all. In the US, and other western countries there are strict building codes, and buildings are inspected by a state official to make sure its done properly. Indian buildings are built by total amateurs who ignore all the rules, because they dont even know the rules. Many Indian buildings are built by the owner, not a professional building company.
The other thing is, in western countries, you cant just build anywhere you feel like. The city must provide infrastructure first like sewerage, electricity, drainage, roads and they have to zone the area for residential buildings,

Apart from dusty farms, habitat and land loss, we can't blame constructions for much, given that these are often done under safety standards, and studies are conducted, reviewed and cites before any such construction. Sure we got corruptions and crony capitalism here at parts which are needed to be addressed, but these are required for ever increasing demands of people residing here, and keep them up to date.
The main issue lies with global warming, which rn, is affecting most sensitive of the areas, Himalayas, where I live, is one of them.
We all are collectively responsible for it, for especially not calling out oil companies , and keeping a mum.

right. but also the hundreds of years old stonehouses in the himalay survived every strong earthquake without cracks. in these old houses cracks started occuring with the dynamite blasting for roads and tunnels. sometimes several kilometers away, because the blasting among other damages also lets sometimes break waterbearing layers which can lead to huge areas sinking. also josimath started only sinking in big way because of the modern development without taking into account the geological situation, only based on shortsighted greed.

Sad but is happening due to the interplay of terrible reasons... lack of respect for the earth we live in; unchecked development; zero environmental assessment; poor town planning; corrupt politicians and officials; the race to outdo one another; and underlying all is sheer greed. But when disaster strikes... the victims blame everybody else for their problems. I feel bad for them but they need to own up as well. PEOPLE THESE DAYS ARE VERY OBLIVIOUS TO HAPPENINGS AROUND THEM.
What used to be a beautiful suburb (in Madurai, Tamilnadu) of nice homes and a pleasant environment twenty years back is now commercialised and messed-up due to unchecked development - rows of retail shops fronting these homes, entire streets turned into commercial centres, wedding halls next to small homes, no drainage system, flats next to small homes creating water and sanitation problems. Local officials don't care at all... and the people who buy these properties are just as guilty. Ugh!
And during a visit to Chopta from Denradun in december 2022... its unsettling to drive on a highway that is peppered with at least 15 landslides... with debris effectively blocking one lane. Sad! Really sad!

After watching the video for 10 minutes, I kept asking myself why these people are living in the mountains, who sold the land to them, and who gave permits to build houses and so forth. It is quite sad to see your home vanish before your eyes, something you have invested your whole life to build. The government of that part of India has a huge responsibility to rebuild and restore the people displaced by something they neglected to foresee and avoid. I understand that nature's forces can be unpredictable, but it's difficult to comprehend why people were allowed to live in an area with a history of unpredictability and unsuitability for human habitation, let alone build an entire town there. Such incidents are seen all over India, where authorities neglect human and environmental safety factors and fail to have a well-planned policy to avoid these situations.

Wanting to be "rescued". Refusing to accept that this will only get worse. Refusing to evacuate. We people want what we want and are awfully stubborn. The Himalayas are still growing! Being pushed up from the inside can also impact the surface tension stability. They need to scout those mountains for stable sites & evacuate the sliding areas except for day use. Or the people accept their fate. You can't eat your cake & have it too.
I live in a flood plain. Being subject to these unstoppable forces is grinding. I guess that's life. The more dramatic examples of change are the ones we notice, but it's happening constantly, everywhere and it ALWAYS WILL. Climate change: the natural phenomenon just recently noticed, lol.

The problem is, the Himalayas are a live mountain system. They are constantly moving, thats why they are so high. The indian sub continent is moving north and crashing into the Asian plate. This movement caused the Himalayan mountains.
      The mountains are constantly moving.
Indians need to ask themselves if they want to pay billions of Indian money to protect the lifestyle of 30,000 people in a tourist town. They also need to ask if the serious risk of earthquakes, floods and 30,000 dead people is worth the risk. Indian government could spend billions to make it safe as possible, but it will never be safe.

At this time, temperatures may have been about 1°C to 2°C degrees warmer than today. Sea level was 5 to 8 meters higher than today. So I think we are at the beginning of a new ice age and the land heating and shifting, whole Mt ranges moving or disappeared completely is part of it as we know from history this is how it starts, and we have moved up the timeline of this natural occurring age by a several hundred years. 😔

All Indian hill towns which have allowed rampant construction are done for. Esp Uttarakhand and HP.
Dehradun, the once lovely capital of UK, is groaning from excess construction n commercialization. Plastic waste is choking the hills. Landslides are common.

Mountain ranges have different evolution,it's people and other life forms.

Sustainability is in understanding the process it evolved, our greed has killed our rational approach.

“The most intense climate lie”: Last week it was all over the news: Temperatures in southern Europe skyrocketing to 48°C! But none of it was true!
“What we experienced over the past days was most intense climate lie since temperature recording began,” reported Germany’s Achtung Reichelt here on the implications of the ESA’s sloppy, manipulative press release and the media firestorm that ensued: “The problem with that report is that none of it is true.”
In Sicily the temperature reached only 32°C over the weekend - a far cry from 48°C, which illustrates the great difference between ground surface temperature and readings taken 2 meters above the ground.
Land surface temperature is how hot the ‘surface’ of Earth feels to the touch. Air temperature, given in our daily weather forecasts, is a measure of how hot the air is above the ground.”
The ESA did not bother to mention how the surface temperature is much hotter than the 2 meter air temperature."

My heart breaks for these people. Our Earth has never been kind to the beings that dwell upon her surface. To expect her to behave any differently this day is to believe a cloud will swoop down to allow us to live upon its surface. When the Earth moves we move with it. We move lower, we move higher. The middle no longer accepts us there. A new home will be made and it will last as it should in the arms of the unstable earth. Please don’t be sad. The cracks and creeks and collapses give you time to take your families and important items away. Ceremonies will follow. Salvation destinations will also follow. Much love and light to all of you.

Indiscriminate construction in the name of "Development" and "Chaardaam Dev Bhoomi" has compromised the entire Uttarakhand. No lessons are learnt from Kedarnath disaster. "Facilities for pilgrims" are put-up, and roads are widened by cutting through mountains making them unstable. But the biggest culprit is the multiple hydel power plants being developed all over mountains from Kashmir to North east. These massive hydel plants accumulating massive water, blasting, tunneling and joining rivers and streams, is putting massive weight on the mountains, making mountain's unstable, and if there is a cloudbust which is nornal in the area, disaster is imminent. The same situation is rapidly developing in Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal, Sikkim, Arunachal, and many other hill states. To illuminate the billboards of Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, himalayan hills are compromised 😢😢

Obviously if you over develop with poor construction on glacial moraine, eventually buildings will shift. Blaming this on made made climate change is a hoot. Ice age events start to melt as soon as they reverse the peak of cold. The Himalayan mountains are there because of plate tectonics that never stops and is another obvious factor in the changes to the geological foundations.
