Pakistan Burns At 50°C: Can It Turn The Heat Down On Climate Change? | Insight

  • A brutal heatwave has hit Pakistan. With daily temperatures hitting 50 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, the scorching heat wave has transformed several cities into hell on earth. It has destroyed crops and icesheets much faster than previously anticipated. Officials have also warned of acute water shortage and the country is now staring at a major food crisis.
Pakistan is now ranked the 6th most vulnerable country on the planet and its Ministry of Climate Change estimates that climate change could cost the country anywhere from $7 billion to $10 billion a year in disaster response alone, never mind the massive losses in economic activities caused by the intense heat.
Can something be done to reverse the tide of climate change before it is too late? And will the people be able to fight the biggest threat to their existence?

Life is getting tough here in Pakistan. I've lived my whole life here, so have my parents, and their oarents too. We have never seen any natural distruction as bad as this. Global warming is affecting EACH & EVERY SINGLE PAKISTANI. I live in Islamabad. We used to have snow here in the 1900's. This year we hit upto 50c°. Do you understand how f'd up that is. 50c° is MAD. I'm from a mountaineous region called Kashmir/murree. Our hills are on fire all summer, litterally all summer you can see smoke from coming from a different region. Also, the moment winter approaches, rains start, along with melting glaciers from all summer bring down tons of water, which had never been seen before, causing huge floods, which lead to THOUSANDS of deaths. This is followed by other problems such as droughts, Heat waves & Land slides. It is a MESS. looks like armageddon.

Honestly though, it's completely reasonable to complain if you have a mental illness, a physical illness, you could have a disease and live in America and not being able to get it treated due to the terrible medical system and insurance system, there are lots of bad things that could happen in your life, that it would be reasonable for you to complain about. (Of course I'm not sure how much complaining would help though.)
But I completely do agree 50 degree (Celsius) heat if absolutely horrible to live in, and the lives of the people in this documentary did seem very sad, but if we use your logic, then let's say there is a human who is declared to have "the worst human life in the world", would it be unreasonable for that people in this documentary to complain about their life, just because someone has it worse than them. But the do indeed seem to have a bad kids, anyway.
I don't think it means that someone has a life worse than you, that you can complain about anything on your life.
But I do agree it's probably not completely reasonable to complain about stuff like "But I wanted the Samsung flip phone, not this 150 dollar phone", or stuff like that. But bad things still can happen in your life.

As she sits and preaches in her air-conditioned offices, dressed to the nines with plenty of clothing, she should be forging a campaign for the rich to donate trees, for fossil fuel corporations to do the same, plus clean up their messes around the world, especially when they're making record profits. The working classes are the poor classes, without whom they would never have their lifestyles. Yet, they remain unwilling to pay livable wages while destroying the habitat of those contributing the most. I'm in central California and we used to hit 118F/48C in the summer. It's hard to breathe, feels like your skin is roasting, eyes get dry, lungs burn. If a breeze came it made it worse, like a convection oven. It pulled the moisture right out of the plants even with wet soil they burnt up. It was miserable.
I cannot imagine having to be out in that sun, in that kind of heat these people are having to work in. I had the luxury of air-conditioning to breathe easier, they don't. That heat is so hard on a person. May God have mercy on His children. 🙏🏼🕊️

You give this person power to make changes, people complain all this environmentalism is affecting their ability to make profits. The poor complain they are already in poverty and need to earn more. The rich threaten to leave the country and take their money and businesses and jobs.
Solution needs changes. Creating a new powerless cabinet position does nothing. Changes only happens if everybody is willing to make a little sacrifice to make the change happen. Right now, everybody wants somebody else to make the sacrifice.
Meanwhile, in developed countries, environmentalists have a bad name. People think of them like geeks and nerds to be bullied. While growing up in Pakistan I remember myself wearing sweaters and jackets in the month of March 7-8 years earlier but this year we faced the first heat wave in march that's how much things have changed in just a few years. It's hard to imagine what the situation would be like after 7 or 8 years. We are not the biggest contributors to global warming but we are among the top 5 countries to be most affected by this temperature rise. EU and other world powers need to take necessary steps because sooner or later it will affect them as well. The recent temperature rise in European countries is just the beginning it will get worse next year. Plus as glaciers will melt sea level is gonna rise drowning many of the islands and port cities around the world. We need to do something about it otherwise it will be too late. Many people are talking about what kind of world we will be leaving to our future generations. Believe me, it's not about the future anymore it is happening now.

Drip irrigation is much more water conservative of water than ditch irrigation, or just flooding the field. It would require an investment to go with drip on row crops. You would need some sort of pump to pressurize or elevate the water source and a lot of irrigation lines. The half-inch lines are about 7 cents a foot here in the US for 1000 foot rolls. Because that mounts up dollar-wise, the move to drip would have to take hold slowly as this is a poor country compared US.

    • @bélalugrisi
      @bélalugrisi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Surely a rich economy in a failing Colorado River water system would be able to implement drip irrigation. California is not, since they have made shady deals with Arizona and the Colorado River Compact in the Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1922. Arizona did not ratify the Colorado River Compact until 1944, at which time the state began to pursue a federal project to bring Colorado River water to its primary population centers in Phoenix and Tucson. California opposed the project, arguing that under the doctrine of prior appropriation, California’s historical use of the river trumped Arizona’s rights to the Arizona allotment.
Outside of Phoenix, in the scorching Arizona desert, sits a farm that Saudi Arabia's largest dairy uses to make hay for cows back home.
That dairy company, named Almarai, bought the farm in 2015 and has planted thousands of acres of groundwater-guzzling alfalfa to make that hay. Saudi Arabia can't grow its own hay anymore because those crops drained its own ancient aquifer. This is also taking place in California.
They got about 15 water wells when they purchased the property. Now, each one of those wells can pump about 1.5 billion gallons of water. It's an incredible amount of water they're going to be drawing up from that aquifer underground. They are also stealing the water to export to China.
United Arab Emirates, Al Dahra, are essentially replicating the exact same thing. They are growing hay. They are using the groundwater. And they are shipping it overseas -- to China.

And the "ironic" yet sad truth is this is caused by western countries pushing poor countries to green energy, instead of letting them develop much faster with fossil fuel and progress so that they can enjoy an air-condition as other middle east rich countries have in many more 50c days a year...
Climate change is 1c in 120 years, this program is pushing propoganda that no real science "expert" could sign on!
Btw in past 15-20 years there was no increase in heat globally (avg), there was even a cooling effect...
The big lie here is to blame climate instead of EU countries who irresponsibly relied on Russia for Gas, instead of investing more in Nuclear and Gas in their own land and making fossil fuel much cheaper for poor countries to develop.

The problem starts with the government.
If there was ways to make a sewage system that cleaned used water and sent it back, the way it works in Europe, there would be less shortage of water.
If the government actually regulated cars that are used by having things like MOTs before they could drive on the road you would have less air pollution. Also, ban the use of open fires. People still cook on fire using wood and grass, this creates more pollution.
Tax corporations for all their pollution. Less CO2 and waste will be produced by them if they know they'll be taxed.
The government needs to regulate worker's rights like the men working in the brick making factory. They're unequipped and should not be allowed to work in those conditions. Employers should be forced to supply workers with appropriate gear.
The government needs to plan cities better and greener. In Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh and KPK most major cities are concrete blocks with no real greenery, no real roads, no planning restrictions and no rules. There is no waste collection so there is rubbish literally everywhere and there is still loads of open sewage systems which are the cause for a lot of illnesses like cholera.
The government also needs to have a national database that all births and deaths have to be registered to so they can get an accurate representation of how many people they're serving and how best to serve them. And in doing so they can implement a national health service and welfare for the poorest of society.
Make school mandatory until children are 18. If the people of Pakistan paid tax this would be easily doable.
For a country with a government, Pakistan is very lawless. The government and all Pakistan's people just do what they want whenever they want it.

"ban the use of open fires."
Many people would starve/freeze to death wouldn't they?

Corporations would relocate, the only reason they are there is because they can get away with it.

@@johndoe6668 Your solutions would give a corrupt government more power & cause harm to many humans on the edge of survival.
"There are water shortages throughout Europe at the moment & no money to repair or enhance the systems we have."
Not to the same extent. In what European country do you reside? Pakistan does not have a functioning sewer system. There is open sewages all over the place, Pakistan still has high rates of cholera. Polio only exists in Pakistan and Afghanistan too.
"Many people would starve/freeze to death wouldn't they?"
No, they wouldn't. And if they do, the government can start an initiative to fund this move to gas instead of wood fire. Wood fire cooking is not sustainable nor is it safe. The government can start these initiatives if they taxed people. Right now only 5% of Pakistanis pay taxes. Pakistan also gets a lot of money in remittance.
"Corporations would relocate, the only reason they are there is because they can get away with it."
So Corporations are only in Pakistan because they can get away without regulation? Do Corporations get out of other countries where they are taxed? Most of western europe has such taxes and regulations. Do corporations not exist in those countries? What's your solution for the pollution they pump into the waters? Especially the leather industry.
"The government is corrupt, like yours & mine. The people are poor & struggling.. "
Yes, all governments have some form of corruption, however, in Western Europe, East Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada and the USA the government actually does help the people whether thats in their capitalist ventures or through social welfare. The governments of those nations are smart with resources as well. In the rest of the world the governments are mainly in it for themselves.
"Your solutions would give a corrupt government more power & cause harm to many humans on the edge of survival."
What are your solutions since you took all of mine out of context? You cherry picked segments without giving the solutions I provided to respond to. For example, you said "so they lose their job & their family starve.." to me saying, "workers shouldn't be allowed to work in those factories." But you forgot to add what I said next which was they shouldn't be allowed to work in those factories if the government doesn't make it so that workers are given appropriate gear to work in those environments. People die and get very ill from such things. There are people working metal factories with sandals and highly flammable cotton clothing. They have no protection because the law doesn't require it and it's not enforced.
In your response to me you've taken a lot of what I said out of context and provided no solutions.
My question to you is, what makes Pakistan different to the UK, Norway, Canada or Rwanda? They're all self-sustaining nations, why can Pakistan not be?

They're all self-sustaining nations, why can Pakistan not be?

absolutely, we have to get past this fear of seeming harsh for suggesting you shouldn't have a child you know you will struggle to feed, but its the absolute truth, and as they say desperate times......................who wants to work like a dog while also carrying the despair of not being able to feed your child? Seems like self torture to procreate in such circumstances.

What most places in the world need is reforestation. This climate crisis can't be solved with just lowering the carbon footprint. Reforestation and restoring the flora not only saves the ecosystem of the area but also helps in lowering carbon dioxide levels, retain soil and air moisture and lowers overall temperature. The key factor they'll need to make sure to research on is the type of local flora and vegetation they will need to plant in order to make this work long term.
How is such a simple solution that many have already come up with and found reasonable and practical not being embraced and acted on by many countries? I can't fathom the reason behind such indecision. It's because of this that so many of these people are suffering needlessly.
Another issue also centers around companies and governments that exploit their environment and dump hazardous chemicals and materials into the surrounding areas, contaminating the ground and killing the ecosystem.
