Ingredients:
Asafoetida - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 2 tsp
Toor dhal - 1 tbsp
Red chillies - 4 nos
Black nightshade berries or Manathakkali - 2 tsp (Optional)
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
Sesame oil - 2 tbsp
Honey - 2 tsp
Coconut milk (first press) - 1 cup
Urad paapad (fried) - 4 nos
Tamarind - lemon size
Water - 1 lt
Salt
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method:
· Extract tamarind juice from one litre of water.
· Add salt and turmeric to the tamarind water and bring to a boil.
· In a separate wok, heat sesame oil.
· Once hot, add asafoetida, mustard, fenugreek seeds, toor dhal, red chillies and slow cook.
· Once this cooks, add the black nightshade berries or turkey berries.
· Cook on low flame. Make sure you don’t burn the lentil.
· Add curry leaves and sambar powder and sauté.
· Quickly check if the tamarind juice’s raw flavour has gone.
· Add this mixture to the boiling tamarind juice.
· Crumble the papads into the tamarind mixture and add sesame oil for flavour.
· Add coconut milk and wait for it to boil once.
· Switch off the stove and add honey.
· Serve hot with rice and dollops of ghee or sesame oil.

My paati was from Mayavaram as well and the cooking and speaking style of your mom reminds me so much of her. I am reliving my childhood memories through your mom. The memory you shared at the end of the video - my paati used to do the same with all the grandkids.
Yesterday only I made this kuzhambu which my daughter likes it very much. I learnt this from my mother in law. But I won't add coconut milk instead I will add arisimaavu. And also I will add jaggery. I will try this version also. Thank you very much. And the most I like your conversation with Amma.

Lovely Vathakozhambu recipe, really loved yours and ammas' conversation, enjoyed a lot even I make this Vathakozhambu but adding honey is new to me. I never add coconut milk because my family loves tamarind taste, nexttimeiwill try like this ,but the procedure is all same. Thank you so much😊😍👍😋😋

We make the same recipe minus the thengapal and honey. Appalam is fried in oil thallium podhu. My amma used to make very tasty. Also we used to have in grandmother's place same way rakesh described with cousins pazhadhu and vethakuzambhu
Wow. Age old kuzhambu. My most favourite. Rakesh, I also love appalam. Coming from Thirunelveli DT, how one ll not like it. My pet name those days used to be appalaa paatti. But here one variation, which I don't use is, coconut milk,and honey. I used to put only little jaggery. Again only followed my Great grand mother . And truly, it bring back the memory of paatti ,kaila thayir saadham பிசைஞ்சு போட, kuzhichindu, இந்த குழம்பு விட்டுண்டா, அப்பப்பா. !!!!!!mmmmh. அந்த ருசியே தனி. இன்னும் ஒரு வாய் , இன்னும் ஒரு வாய் , அப்பிடின்னு சொல்லியே chatti சாதம் காலி ஆயிடும். 😁😁😁😁.great .thank you so much for recreating those moments.❤️❤️😁👍

8.41 my paati did that too! Making thayir sadam in bulk, all of us sitting around, she would give us a big ball of curd rice in our hands and make a hole and pour vathakuzhambu in it. That was accompanied by story time. Best days of my childhood.
