When a member of the public sells (trades in) a car to a dealer it is a private sale, caveat emptor, you have no legal recourse, nor can you, as a dealer, legally put anything in the purchase agreement obliging a private seller to essentially offer you a warranty. What you are proposing to do falls under the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, which prevents a trader from imposing terms on a transaction that cause an imbalance to the detriment of the rights of the consumer.
@@ShiftingMetal I doubt that very much, as a business you cannot legally demand a consumer essentially provides a warranty on a car sold to you. There’s certainly absolutely nothing in the wbac terms and conditions that states they will or can reduce the amount payable after a deal has been done. As a business the onus is on you to check any vehicle you purchase is to the standard you require - do you demand BCA provide you with a warranty on “sold as seen” cars, would you expect them to refund you money if you discovered a fault on a car sold with no guarantee?
The cranking cadence sounded normal, and it started up rapidly. Id put money on a cheap maf or temp sensor type of thing that is causng it to massively overfuel - it Sounds like a carbed engine on too much choke.
This is the motor trade,BCA and others sell cars like this everyday unseen and unheard on their internet sales which dealers buy every day and then realise what a mistake they’ve made when the vehicle is delivered. There will not one dealer who hasn’t been caught out at sometime so don’t be to sad about it your not the first and certainly won’t be the last to fall foul of these things when dealing with bangers, put it in an auction with a sold as seen no warranty ticket on it,tart it up a little I’m sure some other dealer will snap it up thinking he’s snapped a bargain up,its a tough trade your in and I think paying £600-00 for that car is not the disaster your making it out to be,£600-00 in the motor trade is loose change and you know it or should do,you probably made more than twice that amount on the car you sold him so suck it up and move on,you can’t win them all as I’ve found out over the last 50 years selling vehicles.
Oh for the days when engines were simple and taking a head off and putting it back on was only a couple of hours. You could get really lucky and put in new rings with stepped top one and have it behaving itself for a year or so. Even short blocks were cheap as chips.
They want you to provide terms that virtually guarantees them a perfect vehicle for a decent period of time. Only right they offer px on the same or similar terms. Obviously the buyer can’t warrant the px goods but an assurance it is free from catastrophic fault or serious running condition problems seems absolutely fair to me. BUT as I’ve been told many times …..who wants to get shut of a good motor with plenty of life in it? Nobody ….. perhaps px’s shut only ever be considered as dogs and valued as such….it’s a difficult one though for sure.
I know the law regarding rejection from a customer point of view, but haven't a scoobie how it works vice versa. Does the same rules apply as if it were a private sale when a dealer purchases from a customer? i.e. Is there no way a dealer can reject a car?
Here's a trade on policy idea. If someone shows up in a 20 year old car tell them to come back with the cash. Unless you like collecting bangers instead of money 👍
Wonder what the phd mob would have done to you if you stitched them. Not so passive methinks. I think that engine is salvageable if 55 k genuine. No compression can mean a lot of things. The exhaust suggests unburnt fuel and maybe valve not necessarily piston. Find a scrap engine or strip top engine. I hrs job. Or sell as is these a really sought after, proper 4wd. Many uses. Great you humility over the matter. Doesnt Jason do the car check?
Individuals, selling cars with known issues to a company should be held accountable, if they knowingly do it. As should auctions like BCA etc As they do not show consistency in pricing or reporting on cars defects.
Wish I lived nearer you. Looking for a new car and it's worrying trusting local dealers (been stung before) would definitely buy a car from you or chops. Unfortunately I live in Surrey which is a bit far to comr and look at a car but love the channel 😊
Proven with farm walk round definitely some cars worth saving that will bridge lost profit. Vitara worth fixing if nothing else wrong?! All is not lost.
I bought a car from a local cop. He neglected to mention the DMF that would vibrate like crazy once the car was warm. He knew, obviously. Moral of the story: Don't assume anything based on somebody's profession. Next time I shake hands with a cop I'll count my fingers.
If someone said they were a doctor in that kind of situation - I'd instantly trust them less as they don't understand business or taking a loss because of someone else, and have no idea of the challenges of being self employed.
Appreciate an old video but catching up I work in a completley different field and would have had the same assumption ahout Doctors before starting Based on a fairly big sample they are the complete opposite
Even running and driving Jason’s given way too much money that Vitara. It’s £1000 at most and should have been £500 really so that worst case you scrap it and lose £150. It also means you can just scrap all the part ex’s and focus on selling the proper stuff.
Chops likes Suzukis - some of that other stock might be up his street as well. Have you had a borescope in the engine - might just be a valve? As a general rule Suzuki is good at making engines.
Always do a quick mot check on everything, p ex or buying in (customers do) you'd have been wise to that, another idea is management checks the p ex while the salesman does the nice stuff with the customer, then salesman is on the customers side against the hard nosed sales manager, you know, sorry manager says this...
@@ShiftingMetal anybody with any idea bud can at least go up the road and check stuff, do like an appraisal check list, salesman are too eager to do the deal so their not ideal for p exes, I bet tbh you'd have not bought virtually any of your p exs, I find plenty of St deal customers, I've not taken a p x in for mths. I'm actually just working on a micra auto I took in 3 years ago (!) full paint, auto box had a crack in it, sealed with araldite, I've had box off and alloy welded, all this to get my leg out of it(!) bet you can guess where it came from as well(!)
If its a burnt out valve, head off, it's worth doing, it would be 2995 then. I hardly ever take p exs in, I look at it like you'd not be buying their car for good money if it was offered to you, most people p ex ing to smaller dealers on cheaper cars their car is faulty, as you say easy to give 1500 and it's only scrap.

Maybe you should do a code scan on all part ex
I think the low mileage caught your guy off guard. least its a cheap lesson in the grand scheme of things.
sounds like a burnt exhaust valve on the vitara! great vid as always Joe thanks for the entertainment.
Joe, could you not take the engine out the rusty one and put it in this one? Might reduce your loss?
Might be able to part it out wheels rims look ok
They want you to provide terms that virtually guarantees them a perfect vehicle for a decent period of time. Only right they offer px on the same or similar terms. Obviously the buyer can’t warrant the px goods but an assurance it is free from catastrophic fault or serious running condition problems seems absolutely fair to me. BUT as I’ve been told many times …..who wants to get shut of a good motor with plenty of life in it? Nobody ….. perhaps px’s shut only ever be considered as dogs and valued as such….it’s a difficult one though for sure.
Put a caravan wobbly box on the vitara will be fine
I know the law regarding rejection from a customer point of view, but haven't a scoobie how it works vice versa. Does the same rules apply as if it were a private sale when a dealer purchases from a customer? i.e. Is there no way a dealer can reject a car?
Give it to Chops 😂😂
Especially as Barum Engines will sort.
Tbf everything is fixable , but you need a budget as you could be throwing good money after bad and make a loss !!!
Here's a trade on policy idea. If someone shows up in a 20 year old car tell them to come back with the cash. Unless you like collecting bangers instead of money 👍
Why don't you do Vehicle Score when appraising the PEX. That 17 Vitara looked nice.
I wonder how much is a second-hand engine for this car? Maybe it is worth swapping the engine.
Works both ways
?explain dont understand
I find it hard to feel sorry for car salesman... The amount of times "professionals" at places Arnold Clark or Evans Halshaw have ripped me off 👀
Proven with farm walk round definitely some cars worth saving that will bridge lost profit. Vitara worth fixing if nothing else wrong?! All is not lost.
What about switching the engine from the rusty Suzuki into that one and make a good car from the two ?? Assuming they’re both compatible…
8:10 The greatest gilet zip scandal I've seen this week!
😂😂
Great Copart candidate
Couldn’t it be fixed along with doing the cam belt?
When I was trading back in the 80's & 90s I aways found part ex"s from Doctors turned out to be lemons. Pub Landlords cars were always good motors.
Can't believe a doctor would do something like that not good 😮
Remember that when they next offer you something 'safe and effective'.
Hmm are both vitaras the same? Hows the engine in the other one you got? Honestly feel sorry for you guys after all the effort you put in for people
I bought a car from a local cop. He neglected to mention the DMF that would vibrate like crazy once the car was warm. He knew, obviously. Moral of the story: Don't assume anything based on somebody's profession. Next time I shake hands with a cop I'll count my fingers.
was wondering whether the consumer rights act would apply to you as a buyer of the PX here ?
If someone said they were a doctor in that kind of situation - I'd instantly trust them less as they don't understand business or taking a loss because of someone else, and have no idea of the challenges of being self employed.
you need to speak to Steve at Yorkshire Car Restoration, he is the man for welding MX5s
If it's a bent valve a 2nd hand head swap might fix it
Why didn't you roadtest it before the deal?
Appreciate an old video but catching up
I work in a completley different field and would have had the same assumption ahout Doctors before starting
Based on a fairly big sample they are the complete opposite
Even running and driving Jason’s given way too much money that Vitara. It’s £1000 at most and should have been £500 really so that worst case you scrap it and lose £150. It also means you can just scrap all the part ex’s and focus on selling the proper stuff.
Wonder if it was a miss fuel at some point
Could the engine from the £400 one be put in this one and make it good to sell
I'm no mechanic, but isn't that Vitara's mileage a bit low to have compression problems? What did they do to it?
Good point, maybe 257k (?)
Chops likes Suzukis - some of that other stock might be up his street as well. Have you had a borescope in the engine - might just be a valve? As a general rule Suzuki is good at making engines.
Why not swap engine with the rusty vittara
Not worth the hassle. Time better spent prepping good cars 👍
Always do a quick mot check on everything, p ex or buying in (customers do) you'd have been wise to that, another idea is management checks the p ex while the salesman does the nice stuff with the customer, then salesman is on the customers side against the hard nosed sales manager, you know, sorry manager says this...
We’re getting a tech to do test drives and checks now
@@ShiftingMetal anybody with any idea bud can at least go up the road and check stuff, do like an appraisal check list, salesman are too eager to do the deal so their not ideal for p exes, I bet tbh you'd have not bought virtually any of your p exs, I find plenty of St deal customers, I've not taken a p x in for mths.
As a retired Police Sergeant and from my experience there are far more dishonest members of the public from all walks of life than there are honest people. Particularly when they wan't to unload a defective car.
Good video. The world is full of crooks. It happens.....
i love the way you park that thing up lol is that why you dont move the ones at the car lot
😂
just want to say you're becoming one of my fave youtubers and id buy a car off you in a heart beat! btw do you want to part ex a 09 focus with 150k on the clock but you can only test drive it if I can leave the car running........
Vehicle score is OK, in not a trader but it got mine about right.
Doctor of Criminology 😂 well at least it makes for a good story
Hi Bill from Liverpool here on this video you never told us about the 61 plate BMW Mini can you send info on it and what you asking thanks Bill 👀😀👍 oh the mini on the farm lot
