In this video we take a look at another car I have had to buy back from a finance company but is there anything wrong with the car and should I have agreed to it?!

I worked with a sales man a few years back he use to say, When the novelty wears off the warranty kicks in. Looks like this is what your getting.
The state of the car tells you everything you need to know. Clearly her fault.
so why did he let her reject it
@@mikenewbold1699pointless explaining to you because all the information is in the video.
@@mikenewbold1699 didn't have a choice.
Disgusting, some people are shameless. How can you leave the car in such a shit state. (both cosmetically and mechanically)
my ex did/does.NEVER cleaned her car EVER
What about it was mechanical wrong?
She's a freeloader
A perfect example of why some cars will never even hit 100k miles... That much damage with only 2-3k miles of use... And these people exist on the roads. God help us.
2016 volvo..... 189,000 miles still running perfect.
@@richardcook1987 That's not much for a volvo though.
@@fredyyfredfreddy yep.
Not bad going given that 2 years it barely moved becsuse of a global pandemic though!. Roughly 6 years of propper use ans 189,000miles.
2008 Volvo, with 5-pot D5 engine... 165k and runs like new, passed MOT without advisories as usual. Should have at least the same mileage left in it, probably more.
Volvo's tend to have good service history because owners like and care about them... They generally don't appeal to people who buy cars as whitegoods and run them until they break without doing preventative maintenance.
New driver with 200bhp Clio what the hell, bet the insurance is spicy this year
Looks like she drove those 2000 miles entirely along the kerb
Nice one.
Standard issue Renault driver
🤥😂
Self driving car.
Genuinely impressive the damage she's done to every wheel
in just a few months and 2k miles
Finance company should take it back to her, nothing wrong with the box. It annoys me that people can get away with things like this
??? It had a battery problem causing an issue that was then misdiagnosed. I don't see how the owner did anything wrong. In the end an offer was made and accepted.
Its down to people not taking responsibility in life no more... working with the public is a challenge now, and very tiring!
Working with garages can also be the same, coming from personal experience recently on current car.
I think the owner misdiagnosed the fault, thinking its a gearbox fault whilst hitting every kerb on the road
Not sure, think it could be though dont think its this situation, get gear knocking as result of bad peddle control, going from full throttle, up, full etc
We call them scum bag cars , you can tell the type of person that has had it ,
Smackheads
She clearly couldn’t afford the payments on an £8K loan .
My thoughts also👍🏻
Should be a deduction for adding an extra owner on the V5 too
Yep this and this is why the “issue” came from the finance company
Definitely mate !!!!
How many miles did the owner travel?
2000 miles in 7 months and they managed to destroy all 4 wheels?
I would charge them for refurbishing all 4 wheels, the rear trim on the hatch, a full valet and the under bonnet trim. It’s absolutely incredible that they feel entitled to claim they seem to have treated the car like sh*t
Only £300 down on £8300 is a big red flag saying "I'm skint" and they hit the internet to try and get out of some 29.9% APR loan and up comes a reject idea within the first 6 months.
That’s not always true I bought my £10,000 mini outright but I only had to leave £100 down as deposit to secure it until ready it’s only a deposit
£10 says driver got points, couldn't afford insurance, (maybe lost license), then realised she couldn't afford the car.... short circuit to earth.... it means CHANGE THE GEARBOX OIL!!
Yep basically. Ruined such a nice car as well
Definitely one of those scenarios
Which newly passed driver buys a r.s. how on earth did she afford the insurance.
@@pnd7727 probably had someone fronting the insurance for her.
She couldn’t that’s why it came back!
17:29 send the footage to the finance company and offer them 50’/, what they paid because they both tried to screw you over…
A brand new set of wheels from the manufacturer will be a couple of grand as those can’t be restored now
???? Yes they can be sorted
It would be good to have a register for this type of buyer to protect other dealers from ever selling to them. After all, if people cheat insurance companies they get blacklisted and struggle to get insured again.
really good point!
You want to create another cartel as a solution? 😂 come on mate
@@mijr9075 but if that buyer walked into his garage again, would he have the right to refuse to sell them a car. I think the point is that many financial organisations. can choose whether to sell their services to a potential client based on their known history
Ban the finance company as a start.
How on earth can someone do so much damage in five months/2,000 miles!
Looks like a rolled back learner car
I’ve rolled back a 70k Corsa sxi diesel that did 30k in one year back to 72k and got rid as clutch stared to slip .
Bought a newer Corsa Sri diesel and rolled it back 50k 25a year .
I return alloys to as new so you can’t tell though and valet them up

Reverse camera tagged onto the reverse light wiring to triger the camera on the screen ...tricks the canbus system into thinking there is a fault with the gearbox and gives short to ground codes for gear position and confuses the transmission control module flagging codes.
Seen this on vag dsgs and on ford/psa cars.
Check the wiring at the left taillight for evidence of a scotchlock having been used
I've been following your videos for a while now, and you seem to be a decent, honest, reasonable car dealer. It's a shame people can just get a finance company to reject a car after treating it so badly, I feel for you. My next car purchase I will come to you (from South Wales) as I think you are the type of person that I would be happy dealing with 😊
Thank you, that's very kind!
That car was returned in a disgusting state surely that shows what sort of person she is,you should be able to charge for the damage done and six months wear .
Why? She just wanted her car back working! Not clean
Don’t bend over for these finance companies Joe stand your ground you’re not in breach of the CRA here at all
I’m afraid he is. Vehicle doesn’t conform to contract, happily the dealer undertook the work to identify the issue and it was resolved, fair charge for damage/usage as well - Lesson for dealer are to fully evidence diagnostics when something goes wrong, also retain full info on vehicle condition and description including any after market bits prior to sale, even better to have customer sign disclaimer agreeing they are aware prior to sale as well.
@@sgntpepper1976 wrong for 2 reasons. On the balance of probabilities it’s highly unlikely to have covered 2k+ miles if it had a gearbox fault at the point of sale. Secondly the customer must formally reject the vehicle within the first 6 month period ie in writing. The dealer is entitled to an opportunity to repair the vehicle which I don’t believe happened.
@@sgntpepper1976 Depends - if they ran a full code scan with the IM monitors set (showing it was not code reset) and have a record of that, then the fault happened after. I would note that ALL professional code scanners keep records of previous scans.....
@@centralmotorslyeltd Sorry you wrong, the fact the car faulted in such a short mileage would be a factor in the decision to take the customer out the vehicle, had the customer covered more mileage the decision could have been different but the small amount of mileage before fault is the mitigating factor here. Had it gone to FOS they would support the customer, something the finance company will try and prevent
@@sgntpepper1976 well I guess this is why we have the court system to decide. I for one would be telling the finance Co to do one after 7 months and I’ve been in this situation several times over the years
Can't believe how calm you remained while inspecting the car. I'd be spitting feathers 😮
Pillow case with tape on it. A classic way to cover a number plate when exiting a ANPR car park so you don't need to pay.
Wow really?
@@rallycrosscraig lol No.
Yeh that would make sense I use a Carrier bag in some of the notorious private ones even when you pay u get a letter
The issue here is probably the transmission control module (or whatever they call it). It is the same issue with 2103 - 2018 ford Focus cars. Reset via the the OBD and put in a new battery ( or check it. this is why the car looses its control settings) and make sure the earth contact on the body is not onto a painted panel (issue with Ford). Undo the -ve, scrape the pain away, reconnect, then seal over.
Sorted.
Didn't want the finance. Got it in her name for her boyfriend. He ragged the shite out of it, they split up and she didnt want the repayments anymore.
That would explain why she wanted a 200hp car with logos in the headrests.
@@taotoo2 I saw this crap all the time when I sold cars. Especially Motability. These people rinsing the system and they all know their "rights". Most of them with Close Finance. Pondlife. Shouldn't be allowed finance.
I couldn’t do your job Joe I haven’t got the temperament for it
I’d end loosing my rag
Hats off for keeping your cool
First time watching your videos.
Found it really interesting and informative.
Thank you.
Good video, I understand from both sides about the car. What actually bothered me was, the gearbox company scared the customer with a £4k bill, prompting them to reject the car, when, you found the fault! Shame on the gearbox company.
Sadly this is what you face when you sell to entitled chavs on 99% finance. The state of the car inside, the wrecked alloys, the fact they never contacted the selling dealer and used the finance company to get it rejected tells you plenty about the buyer.
For finance deals avoid any 3rd party finance and avoid people with virtually no deposit as they have nothing to lose. Count yourselves lucky you got both keys and the history when they dumped it back to the finance shysters.
Budget tyres on a performance car that’s a rejection straight away.
Nice car. Send them the bill for all the repairs & miles. Then resell 👍. Should be a blacklist for people like that !
The gearbox looked lovely to drive. I'm after an Alfa Romeo with DSG box and I found this interesting and informative.
Love the honesty of your videos. I would definitely buy from you if you had the car I wanted (2017 onwards Merc S350d…Not Black) 😁 Feel for you the way these finance companies just throw cars back at you…keep up the good work 👍
Good video showing the reality of dealing cars
Mate I'd be f'in FUMING! How are you so calm?
I got a jaguar ipace that was sold to me with a water bed as a floor and fluffy green hair bits ALL over the car and that wasn't enough for the finance company to reject it for me 🫠🫠
Anyway.... I'd offer her about 4k for it, take it or leave it, or take me to court, stand your ground bro! It's absolutely disgusting how it's been returned!
Show them who's boss!
Little rats!
Them 1500 jump pack's are amazing. I bought a load of ex London Transport Fiesta diesel's, all had been sitting ages & so flat that they didn't have any dash lights. The Topdom started them all up 😀👍
Washer bottle filler fixing. They snap at the bracket near the headlight, the plastic is underweight for the task of wrestling the yellow cap off to top it up with. Ended up tie-wrapping mine back in place. They all do that squire.
Well done very informative, fair play keep up the good work
Joe I worked for Renault for Renault for 20 plus years before doing my own thing and yes you are 100% correct about the battery and voltage or amp flow also I’ve had issues with worn spark plugs giving out a energy field and dragging down the Ecu new genuine spark plugs always worked as people don’t usually change them or put what they think is oe in and they are not also Renault have a very good technical ability on line at dealer level with a programming ability but with Renault software which we used all the times the issues it would cure was second to none my advice would be to have a hours labour in a good dealership I used to know the master tech in Bristol (not sure it’s open now though) they were pretty good worth a try
Excellent video and it was great to see the outcome.
It’s a shame as people just think they can get everything for free, and it’s funny you mention battery. Batteries are extremely important in new cars, more so to ensure everything is running ok.
Glad you got it all sorted tho.
Our 2013 Ford Focus S had 1 clutch pack replaced when it was 10 months old. Now we are at 2024, with no gearbox probs for a long time. I have spoken to a friend of mine who is an auto transmission engineer, and he showed me why these sport-matic transmissions give so much trouble, the original transmission shift module was faulty causing the transmission to shift too early causing the clutch-pack to slip.
Congratulations both. 🎉
Excellent video once again. I'm no expert but shouldn't there be at least some independent fault verifier or denier involved as an intermediator before the car is returned? That would surely satisfy both parties?
Great content. Love the sardonic critique of the journey. The background everyday goings on are like Arthur Daley meets Clarksons' Farm, meets the Office. How much would it have been to rent this car for seven months, versus financing it, trashing it and getting a partial refund???
I can feel your frustration. I think the issue is new drivers don't realize cars are expensive and require looking after ,parts needing to be replaced is a question of when not if. garage repair bills are eye watering and it takes them by surprise and typically young new driver don't have much money so they try to wriggle out of their responsibility.
Mercedes A class used the same engines and Dct. The gearboxes were poor when new. Getrag made the gear box with dry clutches the MINI DCT by Getrag used Wet Clutches which were very smooth.
Glad that seemed to work out well in the end for you Joe. Maybe another profit in it for you now. Still seems a decent little car after a little work to rectify her damage. Really enjoyed that vid and its length. Tobys company cars get better and better 😁😁😁
Value has dropped by a similar amount so I will be selling at cost sadly
Very interesting video, and a good insight into the powers the finance people have. Just out of interest, what would have happened if you had found nothing wrong with the car, and refused to buy it back ?
Was the loose wire caused by the fitting and removing of the reversing camera I wonder?
You bought and sold a Renault rs with a DSG type gearbox and shock horror its playing up after under 3000 miles 😮. Very risky trying to retail it, bet you dont buy another!. Great channel 👍.
I've always taught my kids, if you can't afford to buy it, you don't buy it. Finance is NOT an option. Save for it and look after it, whatever it is. It's why so many people havent got a pot to p**s in. House on finance, car on finance, clothes on finance/credit. Best thing for dealers to do is to go back to old fashioned cash. People are getting too aware that they can run a car on finance cheaper than renting one etc. She'll get another one from somewhere else and probably IMHO do the same thing. Finance houses will bend over backwards once they lose dealers.
House on finance lol I think you will find 99% buy their home with a mortgage as for car finance absolutely nothing wrong with it if you use it correctly why would you want to pay full price in cash on a item losing value every day you kids must be staying at home if they can't finance a house yes you get bad and inconsiderate people and cheat the system but she will struggle to get finance if keeps handing car back before her agreement
@@taxidmac5907 lol finance is a generic term covering mortgages etc. When you buy anything on finance you pay a large interest payment. On a car that can be up to a quarter of the value. That money could be used to buy other things or to save for a rainy day. I agree with you, she will find it more difficult perhaps to get finance, but there are so many lenders out there wanting to make profits that I doubt she'll find it that hard.
There is no such thing as money it's fiat currency.
The loose washer bottle and the sagging under bonnet sound deadening perhaps indicates that they had an issue with screen washer jets not working and they pulled everything apart to investigate but did a poor job of reinstalling.
I bought my eldest a 12 Yr old Clio to learn to drive in and he had to keep it until he was out of his R plates. This way it didn't matter if he scuffed the wheels or whatever while he gained experience on the road. He was then able to use this car to purchase his "own" first car. Never understand why new drivers get a car like this when they are inexperienced. Nice little car too
I fully agree with others you should go after the buyer for damages caused while in their possession and stick your ground on this one 100% Regards Keith x
To be fair if i bought a car full retail and 5 months later the clutch failed with a £3k bill recommended by a gearbox specialist i`d reject it as well. At full retail its not upto the lay customer to clear codes all the time.
They have had a Superchips map on it
Makes the gearbox go funny at the higher rev limit and also
Track use makes them over heat when you pull off if you don’t do a cool down lap
Both sides will at best have unconscious bias, hence why independent inspection is the only way forward
Nice footage for the bank about their customer and her behaviour - and she will for sure watch this video and someone will ask her also cause she will have been telling a complete different story about the car, the seller, and what not. THat is how those girls behave but also get in troubles with their friends who do not like to see such a different view and picture you were able to provide.
Here she would have to pay for the usage (months and km and depreciation too), also for every new damage based on the protocol when the car and keys had changed hands and then things get more complicated and quite expensive which will stop those people to continue cause the banks will not play this game twice cause they also loose money if such a contract ends .
GOod luck - your video was a recommendation by youtube algorithm - so I subscribed from germany watching british car dealer experiences, I mean small car businesses, not any big one. Just the usual backyard dealer working on his own to survive more or less.
My Quashqai had a battery problem after 2 years, i had a long run to Scotland went to fill up a d everything went dead. RAC came out and replaced battery as it was only 70% apparently its a common occurrence on Renault/Nissan DSG models
I had a seat Leon DSG and it was fine in sport mode, but had clear box issues in normal auto mode. Can you refuse to refund or could do a charge back for the cosmetic damage?
We have given back our FCA licence as the finance companies are terrible and never support us dealers.
not defending the customer in any way shape/form but the 197/200's have a known fault of crunching from 2nd into 3rd and 3rd into 4th. I had my gearbox rebuilt a couple of years ago at a cost of £995 inc vat (synchros, clutch, oils and labour)
Not only the mileage can you charge for the damaged on wheels? They done this to have a fast car
Just shows that as cars are more reliant on computerised systems that the correct voltages and clean earths are vitality important before jumping in and changing clutches, modules and gearboxes
You’re a very fair dealer,well handled 👍👏👏👏👏
You didn't mention invoicing the cost of the missing jack. A genuine Renault part ( so that it fits in the moulded foam ) would certainly be £70- £100 I guess. You should also have a standard administrative charge for V5 replacement, so that the finance comp-any couldn't simply give the straightforward monetary cost from the DVLA for replacing the V5.
I owned a Citroen a few years ago, from new, and had issue after issue from the first day.
Engine management warning came on within 50 miles of picking the car up on Saturday morning.
The dealer was closed until Tuesday following a bank holiday.
I took the car back to them, and they performed a reset.
A few days later the car went into limp-home mode. EMS system fault light on.
The dealer kept the car a week. No fault found. EMS reset again.
Two weeks later, same problem.
Dealer kept the car a week, changed the inlet manifold.
Had the car back another week or so, EMS warning back on, engine coolant warning on, no power. Called out the AA, car towed back to dealer because no fault could be found, but warnings remained lit.
Dealer kept car for a few days, fitted a new cylinder head, performed an engine clean, found a fault on the coolant sensor. At this point I had lost confidence in the car and asked for a replacement. To say the dealer wasn't keen would be an understatement. They said they would replace the car with a used car with a SIMILAR model with SIMILAR mileage or they would order me a new car if I paid an additional cost of around £2500, to cover the price increase on the new car, and a deduction for wear and tear to my car.
I wasn't best pleased. I said I would take the "repaired" car one last time while I considered their offer, (and to consult trading standards).
Had the car back a month or so, EMS warning back on, no power, 200 miles fro home on the M6.
AA called out again.
This time the AA guy sai he'd recently had the same issue with the same model Citroen.
He spent a few minutes inspecting the engine, and went to his van to get a HT lead, which he fitted to one cylinder.
Guess what......
No problem after that. Apparently each plug lead had it's own coil, one of which had an intermittent fault.
In the meantime the dealer came back with a better offer and I got a demonstration car with 1000miles, and better spec as a replacement.
Wow I think she's one hell of a lucky customer. Very fair outcome for her and a bit of a kicking for the dealer.
independent appraisal report on gearbox from the manufacturer or the AA and if no fault found surely there’s no claim?
Well explained and presented.
Great content Joe , really highlights how unfair the system is ! Who would want to be a car dealer . Keep strong mate 💪
The strange noises involved the wheels and kerb. Maybe you should charge the finance company for a new set of wheels and tyres due to the damage, I don’t think a refurbishment will sort out them wheels. Maybe charge them for a new steering rack and tracking due to the damage
My car started to send up the engine management light every once and a while and the mechanic wasnt sure at all so i decided to try changing the coil pack whenever i had time off and that cured it,no codes were ever stored on the system pain in the ass i was worried it was a house and didnt want to splash out on the pack
I remember I was looking at one off these a while back then went too book a test drive and some bugger bought it now I’ve ended up with a focus st flip sake and seeing this video has really made me slightly peed off I wasn’t able too get one of these lol
I would not have refurbed the alloys, I would charge her to replace them and the jack and pump was missing.
At least it did have an existing fault in the end. How people can live with that much rubbish in there when it doesn't take a few seconds to dump bits in a bin on each occaison, I don't know.
Especially so when returning on warranty issues.
Too many videos on social media about the customers being able to reject a car within 6 months is not helpful for dealers.
What's the deal with the 6 months thing, I thought 3 months warranty was the legal minimum you have to provide as a dealer/trader?
@@RAW555R 6 months right to reject under the consumer rights act if you can get a report stating that a fault likely existed before sale. Up to 30 days you don't even need a report - just need to show the fault is there. The warranty is largely irrelevant and is really there to protect the seller not the buyer.
@@neilgorin1037 thanks for that
Here in Australia, I can get one that has done 77,000klm (48,000 miles) for just under 7,000 pounds as reliability on our roads gets 3 out of 5 stars and is not a huge seller. Also, there are not enough mechanics who will work on one.
It’s been a learner car them add on mirrors plus cameras are what driving instructors use and all ADI’s lovely learners mega muller the alloys .
Check if the passenger footwell trims have been messed with fitting He Man duals, also any other mirrors suction marks them together suggest driving school 😂
they are actually just useful as blind spot mirrors.
Might be me, but what stood out most about the costing was "3" tyres...
Unless one is literally brand new already (?) I'd be quoting for 4 - on the basis that you should always replace both on the same axle together (same as shocks, discs/pads etc).
Still... You've been more than reasonable as per usual - I suspect they're taking the mickey a bit, but equally for someone who knows nothing about cars to panic and just want out is plausible, I suppose.
Selling cars is definitely not an easy job. Much more to it than meets the eye. That's what I have learned from your videos. Definitely not stress free.
I've owned my Clio RS for 9 years never missed a beat, the state of that makes me want to cry, and yes a battery on the way out will cause all kinds of gremlins to appear in the french electircs
Glad a reasonable sounding solution was found.
But otherwise Are you able to deduct repair work required ? Obviously a small adjustment for average wear and tear. This is outrageous
Damage to wheels, trim etc do not count as “wear and tear” obviously. That’s simply misuse
Also where’s the independent engineers detailed diagnosis and proof the fault exists ?
You have my sympathies with all this. Shame as it’s a nice little car. Hope you resell it soon
Common problem. Most likely needs a new battery.
RS I've had one and had the same issue
Tax was due for renewing I guess and couldn’t afford it.
I would say you could offer a refund minus the cost to repair the damage she has caused at retail price. So 4 wheels, tailgate panel, plus the cost to valet it. She could have cleaned it herself.
She doesn’t care, I sent a car back it would not be dirty and full of crap
you top notch dealer you
nice video
Tell me what has it got to do with you I do not understand did you give a warranty? If so how long
The added reserve camera could’ve been tapping power from the auxiliary systems, and the 5 volt rail could’ve been over stressed. That could’ve caused an ECU under voltage bringing up error messages and preventing the correct transmission operation. This issue was seen on systems that used for example Pedal Commanders, which tapped the voltage on the ecu and caused errors. But I’m guessing here, don’t kill me.
16:27 The middle aged lip purse of frustration 😊
I would love to have that Clio and definitely look after it as I have. The 0.9 tce Clio
People are quick enough to call out a dealer you should have called out the customer, name and shame .
You might want to think about taking photos of the wheel and bodywork of the car you sell them if they come back to you.
It’ll be on the sales photos and videos.
I’d be checking that’s not had a milage blocker too
That’s why 250 quid for a 1 year warranty is money well spent. Also sign up to Motor codes
Why didnt they come and TALK to you first , looks like a great car , drove well with no major issues , the wheels where proper mullered !
She wanted out I am betting bet the car payment fuel and insurance is bad this year. 200bhp Clio as a new driver must be pricey. I was told even big dealers get twitchy with finance companies, I was told to tell the dealer I will call finance when I had a small issue and they paid within 3 days.
AMT are never as smooth as a normal auto. However that gear box appears sound they will bit rough at low speeds when deciding which gear. My auto gets bit rough when undecided as well.
I think your going to have to do a video walk round every car after the pdi so when these people bring the cars back you can do another video then send to finance company with how much it will cost to get it back to condition it was sold in
Can you not raise an invoice for all the damage done, mileage increase and valeting costs to bring the car back to the condition it was when sold??
He did
They did.
One did.
Watch the whole vid
2000 driving against the kerbs.....some people just don't look after stuff, wonder what their house/flat looks like.
Maybe the driver wasn't used to paddle gear change paddles position and kept touching by mistake
car sounds spot on
Thats a shocking price for that motor tbf. I got a 2019 seat Leon FR with 32k on the clock for the same price.
