Man, the grudge ( 2004 ) is still the scariest movie to me 😂 Kayako in that movie probably gave me the biggest scares, and her movements and that throat gargle... Literally couldn't sleep for like a year without trouble.
Same. I usually just laugh super hard at scary movies but this one got into my head in a way that nothing else could. It was literally the only movie I ever had nightmares about other than 1408 (I once had a lucid dream about that one and forced myself to wake up somehow because I didn't want to be trapped in there).
The original Grudge movie fucked me up as a child, I saw that far too young and was absolutely horrified whenever the day became that gray of twilight that the film takes place, ugh I get goosebumps thinking about it
I remember when the trailer came out, and people were like, ”Man, this looks scary. Excited to see this.” And I was like, ”It’s a horror remake. They’re gonna find a way to fuck it up.” Was really hoping I was wrong here.
They basically put all the scares from the movie in the trailer, which was supposed to be the "good parts", but everything in between just happened to be vapid rehashings of things we had seen in previous Grudge movies
"I think it's weird when people name their animals with human names" Me: don't listen to him, Greta. You're a valuable member of the family.... A member of the family that eats trash and drinks toilet water, but no one is perfect.
Fun Fact: me and my friends saw this movie a week after it came out. The theater we went to (a popular one in a college town) was completely empty, so we had free reign to talk shit about it the entire time. My one friend was so bored he was walking laps across the seats. At one point he sat down behind us and we forgot about him. The scariest part of the movie was when their was a jump scare, and we all got spooked, not because of the movie, but because we heard a laugh and thought there was another person in the theater with us and heard us talking the whole time.
9:30 I am SO a shamed to admit I literally screamed out loud from this even tho HE WAS EXPLAINING THE JUMPSCARE AS IT HAPPENED but I also find it hilarious so I had to share
I think he's totally right about the 04 American Grudge. It's not scary or impressive to watch now, but back then it was truly a sight to behold and freak out about.
4 in Japanese is read as "shi" 「四」sometimes (for example shikaku 四角 "rectangle") The character for death in Japanese 死 is also read as "shi". That's basically why 4 is unlucky. It's like if four in English was actually read as DEATH
The horror movie genre just cant catch a break. Its a shame that finding an objectively good, competent horror movie is like finding a diamond in the ruff
@Josh Youwa The good movies are out there but they're hard to find. Theres also a lot of disagreement. Ive come to distrust any top 10 list cause they're written by people who base their opinion on not liking jumpscares and literally nothing else--like its one thing to critique the use and overuse of the format its another thing to be such a pussy that you only watch horror films in which absolutely nothing happens. If i have to watch another artsy foreign film that doesnt explain for jack shit whats going on for the sake of "good cinema" im gonna pull my hair out. Sometimes a girl just wants a fun haunted house movie. They're not always Certified Good but as long as its enjoyable it wins in my book.
New, good, and original movies in general will be made the moment repeat titles stop making money. Ultimately the only quality of a movie that matters is if it money. This can be accomplished at best by making REALLY good movies, however using a brand or ads works just as well since its not like people can make an opinion before paying to see it. Also people just up and favor new things even if they expect the new thing to be bad, they'll watch a new trash movie over an old classic just cause the anticipation of what could happen is better then knowing what will happen even if what will happen is a master piece.
YAH21 if I’m going to be honest, I’m not really a big fan of modern horror movies, at least the popular ones because they all seem to be about the supernatural, like just the same scary ghost lady or dolls or demons. Like I’m just not into that, and I’m talking about mainstream ones. There’s been good ones don’t get me wrong, just not the ones that get a lot of advertising
I miss old American horror movies like; The Haunting (1963), The Innocents (around the same time), The Thing (1982), Alien (1979), The Exorcist…. Could go on but just wanted these few examples.
I will never forget 7th grade how *SCARED SHITLESS* I was after seeing the first Grudge movie in theaters. I didn't sleep for a WEEK. Saw the most recent one and I cant say I'm impressed.
@@katiebayliss9887 I agree on haunting of hill House bit in the case of this film they basically made the lighting darker because they knew it wasn't scary enough. So they turn the contrast down to make it seem more scary.
New Order of Alexandria oh no I agree, I hate movies like this for a specific reason. This is a monster movie, show the monster, but do it sparingly. Something like King Kong, show it.
Katie Bayliss no. Jaws, Alien, Predator and the first Grudge worked because they hide the monster for most of the film, therefore their scenes have more impact when they actually do appear onscreen
Dim lighting can work to set the tone and mood of a scene. In certain circumstances. Some shitty horror movies just use it as a cop out. They either can’t think of anything creative, they don’t have the budget to make something scary or they’re trying to hide poor special effects
I love the Ju-On/Grudge franchise, and it makes me so sad to see it die a slow, painful death with each subsequent film being worse than the last. 😩☹ Oh well, at least we have the originals.
i remember when i was little & got nightmares just from seeing previews for the grudge movies. meanwhile, i hadn't even known this one existed until now, ive heard literally nothing about it. also, my take on pets having human names is that they should be ridiculously fancy or elaborate. like Captain Felix Montcroix the third or something
I mean jumpscares can catch anyone off guard, but that's the problem with modern horror movies. There's no sense of dread and horror because after the jumpscare there's nothing else. Eventually you just get used to them
Killer pizza is amazing. It’s a novel for teenagers and it goes through several students forming a friendship through a pizza job that’s not all it seems. I don’t want to spoil it because it’s a true gem. I’d definitely recommend giving it a read.
The original movie (Japan version) was actually pretty scary to me because I was so gripped to it and I waited for a scary part The remake in English (2004) was pretty decent too But this one.... this one was awful
After watching the movies themselves, I have yet to see the original one sadly. But I will say. This movie, the 2020 Grudge shouldn't have happened. It was god-awful and I lost interest halfway through. After I tried hard to pay attention. It was dull and the ghosts look... Awful. I think I'd rather watch the Grudge 3 again than witness this trash.
I love the original movie, too. It's the first horror movie I watched that really scared the shit out of me. Hollywood should stop making rip-offs of beloved movies like this.
Everything you said is 100% true! I went and saw it in theaters expecting a good take on the grudge. The jumping around in this movie bothered the hell outta me and to have seen all the original "Grudge" films.....this disappoints me.
I actually had high hopes for this movie. I was honestly expecting to see newer and better Grudge Movie with newer graphics, characters, and of course a much scarier version of Kayako Saeki (the grudge girl) herself. Guess not.
@@ac-130fan I saw the outside lots of places film there cause its cheep to film and lots of empty parking lots they can use to keep the various trucks and crew cars and whatnot. The town's got that old esthetic look to it.

I personally hate it when people give their pets names like "fluffy" or "spaghetti". Seeing as how some people view pets as family, it's like naming your kid "Porkchop". Though people already do that...
When you said there was great foreshadowing at the start I thought you were gonna say that’s the only good part but then you said TRASH and I almost choked
Oh snap, I remember reading Killer pizza. If it's like the novel its basically a secret service of teens that work in a pizza shop and kill some sort of pizza monsters/aliens. It's odd
oh completely. Im just so sensitive to jump scares its ridiculous. Like in the scene where Elvis was complaining about the ghost dude in the kitchen. I KNEW what was coming and still it startled me. Its the visuals and the audio, just the sudden spike in volume that gets me. Its so cheap, it feels terrible.
My favorite Grudge movie is Ju-on. I found it much scarier than the 2004 version of The Grudge. The primary thing that made it feel scarier to me was the lack of rules. That fact that there really was no silver bullet to save the day and that you really didn't have to do anything to incur the spirits' wrath is a large part of what makes it scary to me. I didn't even know these newer versions of the Grudge existed...of course, since the 2004 version left me disappointed, I can't say I was really looking for more of them.
@@destructokid1337 yeah good point, I feel like the writers for horror today haven't seen a single horror movie in their life, there's just money in the genre

Not saying this in defense of The Grudge 2020, but "mother!" also got an "F" cinemascore, and I think that movie was genuinely fantastic. Cinemascore(s) can sometimes be far too harsh in their criticism as a result of their own personal shortcomings as movie-goers. Even if they really didn't like "mother!" which.. Mother! is absolutely an overlooked masterpiece that will get its due someday. Its the most intense movie length crescendo I've ever experienced in a theater.
Im a huge horror movie lover and the grudge (the first American made one) has been the only horror movie to this day to give me consistent nightmares. Something about the grudge left a impression on my soul, something about long dark hair ghost girl scares my ass off. Oddly enough the ring did not scare for some reason.
What I liked about the original Grudge ghosts was how uncomfortable they were to look at. The main ghost lady was always twitchy and made awful cracking noises when she crawled, and her face was not snarling and mad, but wide-eyed and open mouthed, and she just made this horrible droning noise. Which was explained because she had her neck broken and that wooden sound was her attempt at screaming. Same with the kid. He could only make cat sounds because he died at the same time his pet cat did. It's not as cool of a story as the ghost lady, but it was different: a ghost kid screaming like a cat. This movie has the same problem that La Llorona has: these ghosts could be literally any ghost, and the only reason they named the movie the Grudge was to cash in on the longtime fans. It's a name people recognize. These ghosts are so unlike the Grudge ghosts that they could be replaced with any spooky being and the story remains the same. A haunted house story isn't unique, so you have to make the ghosts memorable, which the original story did.
I just discovered your channel and I’ve been binge watching your videos. Well made, highly entertaining, you have great humor and your content is interesting and enjoyable. Great work. Gonna enjoy watching your channel blow up even more, as it is sure to.
I have to disagree on the original being great tbh, it had some horrible acting, a weirdly out of order plot and most of the makeup looks horrendous now.
Domenick boucher if you’re talking about the plot of the American remake, i’d agree. They tried to to the thing Ju-On did with the different perspectives but without the transitions that are in Ju-On showing the name if the character they’ll be focusing on. But they didn’t do this in the american version. Which is why it can be confusing
@@SUCHATYR4NT No, I was talking about the Japanese original, I haven't rewatched the American version(even though they share the same director) but plan on doing it this weekend. I just rewatched Ju-On the other day and honestly, I don't think it's that great of a movie or really even all that good. The sound design is excellent but, outside of the scene where Hitomi just does not have a good night, I thought it was pretty dull and thought the shifting perspectives and time were kinda confusing at points.
Domenick boucher i myself really liked the japanese originals. But you’re correct about the perspectives and the time being confusing. But after a while you get used to it and it all becomes clear. It wasn’t really scary but the japanese ones are good movies imo.

I think he's totally right about the 04 American Grudge. It's not scary or impressive to watch now, but back then it was truly a sight to behold and freak out about.
Disagree, that movie still creeps me out.
4 in Japanese is read as "shi" 「四」sometimes (for example shikaku 四角 "rectangle")
The character for death in Japanese 死 is also read as "shi".
That's basically why 4 is unlucky. It's like if four in English was actually read as DEATH
四 can also be read as “Yon” lol
I've always found that funny because 4 has always been my lucky number.
If that was the same in English it would be like: 10, 11, 12, DEATH, 14...
Death is more like "shin" like *omae wa mou shindeiru*
SanDimas Incorrect. “Shin” is a variation on the word Shi, written as 死ん

Josh Youwa don’t breathe wasn’t a good movie

My favorite Grudge movie is Ju-on. I found it much scarier than the 2004 version of The Grudge. The primary thing that made it feel scarier to me was the lack of rules. honestly, committing arson is my first reaction to most situations
