One thing you'll ALWAYS hear in the NHL: "We lost the series but we had a tonne of significant injuries" One thing you'll NEVER hear in the NHL: "We won despite having a bunch of significant injuries". Point being that injuries somehow get worse and only get mentioned when a team loses....
In response to the copycat question, the Knights have made blocking shots a science. Yes Hill played amazing and so did Brossoit and even Thompson. But how can a team break a record with the most goalies recording a win in a season? Blocking shots!
This cannot be stressed enough. The Knights had 3 of the NHL's top 7 shot blockers this season. Alec Martinez was #1, Brayden McNabb was #2 and Alex Pietrangelo was #7.
And imagine how much you have to reprogram your brain to step IN FRONT of a piece vulcanized rubber going 100 miles per hour. Your natural instincts are of course to get out of the way.
Great point. I really think the Knights had the best d core out of any NHL team this season. You'll find better individual defensmen, but not a better group. The blocked shots were key
I like how they have a rule for "player swipe for the puck before the ref blew the whistle" but also a rule for "the ref had intentions of blowing the whistle before the puck crossed the line". Very consistent lol
Buffalonian living in Vegas: I wanted Eichel to lift the Cup in Blue & Gold, but I’ll take ALL GOLD. Best in the west, and best in the rest. Can’t wait to see Tuch take the Sabres to the playoffs next year!
Wild fan following Eichel: He is why I cheered for VGK, I just Love that head up style along with PKane and Middlestadt. Good luck to the Sabres, but Go Wild!
Oh my… this I never thought I’d hear from a Sabres fan, but I’m all for it! I know as I’m writing this the Sabres haven’t had anywhere close to as good of a season that y’all were hoping for, but now that the VGK won the cup, and all the Eichel haters from Buffalo have to live in a reality where he’s a cup champ, I now just want you guys to break this drought and get playoff games back into Keybank Center, regardless of being a dangerous team or not. Bust out of the mediocrity and make it happen!
I think a good way to look at it. For many vegas fans its been longer than 6 years. Many of them cheered for other teams since their city was teamless.
We also had the Thunder and the Wranglers….we aren’t unfamiliar with sport heartbreak. Granted it’s not the NHL. But the Las Vegas Wranglers made it to the Kelly Cup Final twice and lost both times. One of those times was to Florida. Funny how things work.

I was born in NJ & a NY RANGERS family. I’ve been in Las Vegas for 35 years. I’ve been in love with this team, since I heard we’re getting an NHL team. My family & I went to the first NHL preseason game at Caesar’s palace. NYR vs LAK outdoors. I think it might’ve been the first “winter classic”, don’t quote me. I love how your sarcasm blends with ironic anger. As a Ranger fan I CONCUR!!! This team, this season was magical. For hockey conspiracy theorist’s, MAYBE it was a “fix” bcuz the NHL’s motto this year WAS “The Golden Era”!!! Just saying……I CAN sub to your channel bcuz your a Leaf’s fan & they’re original 6!!! I’m looking forward to a new season where we’ll hoist a WCF Championship banner & our 1st Stanley Cup Championship banner. It’s Reilly Smith that got the GWG bcuz he scored the 4th goal in a 3-9 win. Sadly he won’t be there to enjoy the moment bcuz he was sent the the Penguins a week later. I’m as angry as my friend with the Fleury trade!!! About player’s height. Look for the “Comprehensive Cancer” commercial with Alex Tuch!!!! Just do it, trust me!!!! Looking forward to a new season. I think the 2022-2023 playoff’s were remarkable. So many game’s, so much talent & luck!!! Every series had a hook. Good luck to the Leaf’s this year. They might make it to Conference finals this year. Maybe….you never know
Absolutely, Handled them. Fla had no answers and just think 3-4 of FLA goals in series were ricochet gifts not even good shots . Those don't go in would hace been and even Bigger ass whooping. They could've got swept like 96 but I think Vegas let them win 1 like in Dallas so they could get back to Vegas and clinch.
@@paulthompson8793 just say you don’t know anything about hockey. Absolutely no one was going to get past this Vegas team. They were something else this season. The fact that the panthers were injured and still made it this far goes to show how good they are. Think before you write cause you look like a fool
Vegas' D-men are literal backstops in front of Adin Hill. Three of them were in the top ten for blocked shots. So you basically have to have several crazy muther effers who are ballsy enough to step in front of vulcanized rubber bullets.

Stars fan here - couldn’t help but root against Vegas, but after two games it was hard to convince me to root against them. They played so damn well and it’s some consolation to say we lost to the Champion team. Better team won - celebrate now and see you next season!
I'll join in on the absurd facts about this cartoony season. The Vegas Golden Knights finished 5th in the league at the end of the regular season. With 16 wins in the playoffs that put them at 67 total wins between the regular season and playoffs. Boston, who was knocked out in the first round, finished with 68 wins between the regular season and the playoffs. Absolutely goofy things happened this year and this stat just solidifies that silliness. Honestly might be one of the craziest and most memorable years in NHL history.
You're right on that. I was more trying to emphasize that so many stats and situations this year come across as things you see when playing Chel on rookie. Boston's insane regular season. McDavid's crazy regular season as well. Draisaitl being tied for most playoff goals with two less rounds of games. Florida's amazing Stanley cup run as an 8 seed. Stuff like this is why I said this season was goofy.
@@jecrex8349 No I kinda wanted them to play him in the third just to have him play one more game (his career may well be over now) but Hill deserved to close it out too
Vegas kept getting better after each series. They played a total 200ft 5v5 with drive and attention to detail. Yzerman, Crosby, Toews, are great not just because of raw talent, but because they played a total game with a focus on what in the moment was needed to win. Vegas as a team bought into that…They played Canadian work boot playoff hockey perfectly.
I grew up in Vegas in the early 2000s, moved to Chicago ~05 and barely knew what sports were lol. Got barraged by the Cubs/Sox/Blackhawks/Bears/Bulls and nothing really did it for me until I was in college and VGK came on the scene... after being so close in the first season, they finally UKnighted the Realm. My heart is so happy :)
I remember my grandpa, on the porch of his house in Pilot Mound Manitoba, in the 70's, talking about the day it would be Florida and Las Vegas in the finals. It brought a tear to his eye. He was a Las Vegas fan since he was a kid. He's gone now, but hopefully he's watching from up there! This Las Vegas win was for you grandpa!
I've lived in Vegas almost the entire 40 years I've been on this planet. I have been a Red Wings fan since the early 90s. Hockey is my favorite sport. When there were rumblings that Vegas might get a team, I knew I had to put down my deposit for tickets, along with some buddies. I wanted to see my Wings in person at least once a season and cheer for a brand new, local, probably bad team along the way. It has been 15 years since the Wings last won the Cup. I am beyond ecstatic. I have earned to go to a championship parade my entire life, now I get that chance. Hang in there Dangle, it'll happen
"miraculous, not because they are superhuman, but because they are human" made me emotional. what an amazing sport, what amazing athletes, and what an amazing conclusion to an amazing season. I know the general hatred of vegas is only gonna get worse from here on out, but ultimately I know it comes from a deep love of Their team, because that's how I've felt about the sharks or the stars in the past. we just all really love the sport and the guys in it, and (if only for today) that makes me happy. thanks for the fun 22-23 season 💛🖤❤️
That no fear element you talked about........ yeah, no one in the Leafs has that. I've been a lifelong Leafs fan, but I'm starting to feel like their core players are more interested in a payday than winning a cup. That being said, congrats to Vegas. I was there 2 weeks ago and it is very much a hockey city.
6:41 How does that rule apply to that disallowed Nashville goal in the 2017 cup final in game 6? Cuz that puck was not covered at all and it was disallowed.
So glad to see these guys lift the cup. A lot of people assume golden knights fans are bandwagon fans and as soon as our team starts tanking that a lot of people will jump ship. While that may be partially true (regardless of the team imo), people tend to forget how this team started off. Right before their first game, the Vegas shooting occured. Throughout the month of October, the Golden Knights helped support the community and showed up to hospitals, memorials, etc. They really helped the city heal and remember the 58 people that were lost on 10/01/2017. A lot of people were fans of the Golden Knights before they played their first game because of how much they helped this community, not because they were a hockey team. During the pregame show before the first game, Deryk Engelland spoke about being proud to be part of this devastated, yet healing community. The knights then went on to retire the number 58 in respect for the 58 people that were lost on the day of the shooting. Watching them play that first game/year seemed like such a cinderella story to us locals. I was also at the game where the Knights took over the number 1 spot to lead the NHL in points (beating Tampa Bay) and it was electric. For all the people that hate the VGK because of the expansion draft and the salary cap, I get it, but hate the league, not the players. They earned that cup this year and we are very fortunate to have them represent our city. #VegasStrong and Go Knights Go.
I was at the game and let me tell you the crowd outside of T mobile arena was one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen. It took us hours to walk to our car through that crowd. The strip went absolutely nuts when they won it was one of the most fun times of my life.
Vegas: 6 seasons, 2 Stanley Cup finals, 1 Stanley Cup, 12 playoff rounds won👍 Toronto: Last Stanley Cup finals in 1967 (57 years ago) when there were still only 6 teams and only 4 teams made the playoffs (2 rounds). Last Stanley Cup won in 1967 ( 57 years ago, but I guess we can brag that the last time we were in the finals, we won).😭 12 playoff rounds won from 1992/93 to 2022/23 (30 seasons)😭😭 Congrats to Vegas.😁 Will they win a second before the Leafs end their drought? Hope not, but probably.😭😭😭
The moral of the story. Don't build a team around players, instead build players around a team. The Knights inspired Seattle to take that same approach.
As a Vegas native born in 1968 with a mother from Toronto who dated Dick Duff and worked for Tim Horton this is surreal. Being at the parade was otherworldly. God hockey is great. But we will have our time in the wilderness there is no doubt. But for this to happen 6 years after unspeakable tragedy is simply good. Thanks for what you do man.
6 grueling years lol but vegas has been waiting much longer than that the knights are our passion, our identity, something this city has been longing for since before i was born. vegas deserves this and it couldn’t have happened a better way
question for Steve and everyone else here about the physicality and aggression in this series: do you see Mitch Marner surviving and being effective in such a series? i dont and thats why i want him traded as long as his value is high. Steve is right, its not only about being tall and tough. but skills without one of the other things doesnt cut it either.
Thank you Steve. Brilliant season as always. All Canadian players save Barbashev, Eichel and Martinez (spectacular trio right there). Not a recipe, but I do think growing up in Canada you are more likely to have that cup passion and no fear.
Mission accomplished, Knights. For the 1st time in 6 years expansion franchise history, from worst to redemption the VGK have won its 1st Stanley Cup champions. The curse is broken, a dream has come true.
Love your hockey passion and knowledge. Thank you for another great season of videos and let's hope we finally get to celebrate a Leafs cup win next season. From another long time Leafs fan
Vegas was the first expansion team under the new expansion drafting rules, and basically every GM was scared to lose their good players, so they all either overpaid or paid a pick and/or players for Vegas to NOT pick their good players, and Vegas stockpiled a ton of free assets. George McPhee made a very clever move up front by announcing that he was gonna give each team a chance to keep their players, all they had to do is offer him something...
Great series, good old fashioned hockey, aggressive tough hockey, not pretty at times, but sure beats the skating up and down the ice, I saw in the regular season. Congratulations to the Golden Knights.
Congratz Vegas. That's pretty wild. That being said, I really, really, really hope the reffing gets better cuz I legit really have difficulty watching the NHL right now.
Strong post, per usual. I’m sure others pointed this out; I’m too lazy to check every comment. But Smith, vice Nash is the Reilly that Vegas took from Florida in the expansion draft.
I mean no disrespect to the Vegas fans or the players and coaches that played in these playoffs but there's something inherently unfair about this final. Florida was an expansion team of the early 90's that got the scraps of the NHL. Vegas on the other hand was handed a competitive team on a silver platter by Gary Bettman's change of expansion draft rules. Combine that with the fact that most GM's handled this new expansion format very poorly by giving away draft picks to Vegas for free, and you get a team that has way more assets than any team could accumulate in the normal way, and let's face it, in this cap era, having valuable assets to spare is a major advantage. Vegas hasn't even been careful at handling there assets over the pas few years. They've wasted picks and given away players for nothing, which other teams can't afford to do if they want to stay competitive. Don't get me wrong, the team itself isn't to blame for anything, they just took advantage of what they were given, but I can't ignore the fact that Gary Bettman was the one that really orchestrated this whole thing. He wanted put a winning team in Vegas and he got what he wished for.
"I can't ignore the fact that Gary Bettman was the one that really orchestrated this whole thing. He wanted put a winning team in Vegas and he got what he wished for." That was 6 years ago...and the "favorable expansion rules" did not guarantee anything beyond getting a group of bottom 6 forwards, middle-6 defensemen, and a backup goalie. The timing was right in that Fleury was on the way out of Pittsburgh; his presence contributed greatly to the first Cup Final appearance. But he's been gone for 2 years now. In fact, there are only 6 players remaining from that inaugural season team, and only one of them (McNabb) was an unprotected straight selection in the expansion draft. The other 5 were acquired via deals made by the GM's of their former clubs in order to protect their entire roster or seeing an opportunity to dump bad contracts on Vegas in exchange for a player of THEIR choice: *The Buffalo Sabres traded their sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Vegas selecting William Carrier *The Florida Panthers traded Reilly Smith in exchange for Vegas selecting Jonathan Marchessault and a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft *The Anaheim Ducks traded Shea Theodore in exchange for Vegas selecting Clayton Stoner *The Columbus Blue Jackets traded their first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and David Clarkson in exchange for Vegas selecting William Karlsson At the time of the draft, none of these players were considered above average; they blossomed during their time with the VGK.
You're not wrong! I understand that Vegas is the most desirable for players, particularly if they can stay. As long as there is air-conditioning, summer heat isn't too much of a problem especially because it's dry. Way different from Florida! And, of course, the other sinful things. And for those who are homebodies (like me) neighborhoods where people can just live their lives.
The size of the player helps to protect against neutralizing by the other team…it’s rare to be smaller and fearless with skill and be effective against larger, aggressive opponents.

Congrats Bettman

One thing you'll ALWAYS hear in the NHL: "We lost the series but we had a tonne of significant injuries"
One thing you'll NEVER hear in the NHL: "We won despite having a bunch of significant injuries".
Point being that injuries somehow get worse and only get mentioned when a team loses....
I agree but that's also why depth is so important.
@@MrWeezeloner their motto for these playoffs was “it hurts to win”.

Vegas straight up bulldozed the Panthers for this Stanley Cup
Absolutely, Handled them. Fla had no answers and just think 3-4 of FLA goals in series were ricochet gifts not even good shots . Those don't go in would hace been and even Bigger ass whooping. They could've got swept like 96 but I think Vegas let them win 1 like in Dallas so they could get back to Vegas and clinch.
Panthers aren't a good team, they sure showed it in the finals.
I was rooting for the Kraken all season to end up in the conference finals with the Knights. Hopefully next season.
@@paulthompson8793 So if they're not good, what does that say about the Eastern conference?
@@paulthompson8793 just say you don’t know anything about hockey. Absolutely no one was going to get past this Vegas team. They were something else this season.
Not goofy. How often has the President's Trophy winner won the Stanley Cup? I think only once. Fifth in league? That's pretty high.

Your grandpa was a fan of the VGK since he was a kid? This was only the VGK’s sixth season!
Reminds me of when Steve said that Erik Karlsson was playing with a broken foot when he was with the Ottawa Senators during the 2017 playoffs.
At least Quick got justice for the awful trade.
That no fear element you talked about........ yeah, no one in the Leafs has that.

Congrats to the VGK from a long suffering Leafs fan. Also kudos to their social media person who is hilarious.
The Misfit DNA IS the culture of the VGK

The moral of the story. Don't build a team around players, instead build players around a team. The Knights inspired Seattle to take that same approach.

As a Vegas native born in 1968 with a mother from Toronto who dated Dick Duff and worked for Tim Horton this is surreal. Being at the parade was otherworldly. God hockey is great. But we will have our time in the wilderness there is no doubt. But for this to happen 6 years after unspeakable tragedy is simply good. Thanks for what you do man.

It’s so cool to see Quick raise the cup again, never would’ve guessed it would be with Vegas though
He wanted put a winning team in Vegas and he got what he wished for."
That was 6 years ago...and the "favorable expansion rules" did not guarantee anything beyond getting a group of bottom 6 forwards, middle-6 defensemen, and a backup goalie. The other 5 were acquired via deals made by the GM's of their former clubs in order to protect their entire roster or seeing an opportunity to dump bad contracts on Vegas in exchange for a player of THEIR choice:
*The Buffalo Sabres traded their sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Vegas selecting William Carrier
*The Florida Panthers traded Reilly Smith in exchange for Vegas selecting Jonathan Marchessault and a fourth-round pick in
the 2018 NHL Entry Draft
*The Anaheim Ducks traded Shea Theodore in exchange for Vegas selecting Clayton Stoner
*The Columbus Blue Jackets traded their first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL
Entry Draft and David Clarkson in exchange for Vegas selecting William Karlsson
At the time of the draft, none of these players were considered above average; they blossomed during their time with the VGK.
When is the parade?Go Knights Go!!
Got the weather, taxes, women.. it’s Vegas !! Vegas will always be a contender. Players just want to be there
You're not wrong!
