@@dynamoproductions5 Actually Treliving did the right thing. Signing Sammy for one year instead of 3 or more as he wanted, and with possibly a higher salary. Treliving as most people who watch Hockey wanted to see if last year was a fluke on Sammy's numbers because he had elite defensemen in front of him, or if he was actually really good and could give us a chance. His best ever career year was last year. But he had multiple sub .9% years before that. Washington let him walk. We will possibly do the same. He will play really well the first year on the new team, then go back to being a "good" backup goalie.
I noticed with Sammy that when he drops, he drops off the angle. His hips turn sideways and it fucks up all the preparation he did to prepare for the shot. He keeps reaching for pucks with his hands and not bringing his whole body with him to make the save. He's hurt. You don't drop awkwardly like that if you're healthy. Either that or his mind is so scrambled that he needs an IR stint for therapy. That's not a joke either, if he's so in his head it is fucking with how his body functions, then he needs a break from the ice and time to meditate and rest.
Leafs are 1-5-1 against Buffalo, Chicago, and Ottawa this season. Throw in Columbus, and Toronto is 2-5-3 against these 4 teams this season combined... 2 wins out of the 10...my goodness LMAO
The Leafs-Blue Jackets matchup is so mystifying as a Blue Jackets fan. The two most frustrating games of my life have been against the leafs (the last 6-5 game, blowing a 5 goal lead in the 3rd period, and game 4 of the qualifying round) and yet we seem to win more often than not regardless of which team plays better.
Oh yeah? well it seems you haven't been to Nationwide when we are playing the Penguins! THE most frustrating games. I hate Pittsburgh, and they always seem to find a way to come back in the 3rd. There are too many blatant give aways in our own end that result in the puck going into our net . Now Sammy should have had 1 or 2 of them but the defense sucked tonite again.
Agreed. There was a couple weird ones but you can tell the Leafs were trying to defend and sucked at it like usual. Try clearing people out of the net so he can see or how about don't let players be alone in front of the net. It was garbage.
Bingo. All of this hate of Samsanov, but very few goalies would see consistent success behind this AHL level defensive core. This has been the Leafs problem for a decade, yet the front office never addresses it. Shanny should have been fired years ago.
It seems to be that the D needs improving as well as in net...much like the Kings last season... You can't go run and gun with Samsonov in net with no D or it's him that gets shot... The same goes for Jones... You need another Muzzin type D in the lineup...someone who could glue the D in place...
They play worse with him in net in general. I think maybe gripping the stick too tight cause they know basically every mistake is going to be a goal against
I feel for Sammy, I don't even blame him for most of these goals tonight, but it's tough to watch him mentally collapse when he starts swimming or let's a stinky one in. The early goals weren't even that bad, I feel like he let them get to his head and got super rattled. Just knowing how he was starting to look again, swimming. He had Maybe one or 2 games where he.looked good, I almost thought he turned a corner. Goalie coach needs to slow down his game and get back to fundamentals, and basic positioning

Get me right - everybody else who is contributing positively has worked hard, too, and I'm not saying Dangle is wrong for wanting him off the roster. In fact, if you're somehow a Samsonov holdout fan at the moment, the best thing for him personally is probably to spend time elsewhere in the AHL for a confidence overhaul. Failure is hard. Usually you tell somebody who has failed to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and try again. But in Sammy's case, it's almost time to tell him he needs to try something else, and ($3.5M contract or not) I think that should tug your heart strings just a little.
first goal- man unchecked in slot - 2nd goal brutal line change - 3rd goal 3 leafs behind net and lose battle for puck -- samsonov is brutal but leaf defence is worse
Okay, Sammy has been bad, obviously; we want some saves here, BUT let's just look at it goal by goal. 1st goal = Lilly blows a tire, giveaway scramble screens Sammy, good shot = goal. 2nd goal = 3 on 1 from a bad change 3rd goal = screen 4v3 tip 4th goal = 3 leafs behind the net, an open guy alone in front 5th goal = Sammy wants that back 6th goal = cheating offence in OT and bad faceoff leads to player alone up front and a goal You have a goalie that's fighting it , but make him face easy shots so he finds his confidence. The 5th goal is what happens when your struggling goalie is given no help so he has no confidence to make an easy save IMO. This team needs a defensive or head coach change cause we look bad
No nhl goalie is gonna have a night were they don’t deal with deflections or giveaways or point blank chances. Like do you think the canucks don’t give up those same things on most nights. I’m not trying to diss I think Vancouvers great but every team needs a save your never gonna win. Look at Carolina or new jersey
it's not a competitive organization, folks, it's a merchandising machine. they'll give nylander his 11M, you can keep buying his shirts and they'll continue getting stomped round 1 every year. the goalie shit should've been solved, in the summer, with carter hart. philly was cooked, new novice GM, they were ready to tear it down...but no, let's run a couple 800k goalies out there...with a handful of 800k defencemen... _it's done._
I dunno why tbh, I liked Dubas, he was at least unique, and he seemed to have a knack for finding good, cheap players to fill out the depth. Whereas Treliving has also made bad decisions and doesn't have Dubas' positives.
Samsonov and Campbell just completely have fallen off the cliff. I feel bad for them. They are good guys but struggle with mental health and confidence issues.
Except that he isn't on point because he didn't mention the main issue which has been the Leafs issue for years. They have no defense. None. How many giveaways and lost puck battles end up in the net? Samsanov hasn't been good, but neither has any goalie for an extended period of time, behind this defense. A smart GM would take one of Nylander, Marner and Matthews and trade them for a star defenseman as well as a couple other pieces, but based on the moves he made in the off-season, the Leafs GM isn't even average.
The defence was collapsing a lot as well, they definitely should’ve stopped at least two of the goals against(including OT). Coach has to get their crap together cause they aren’t.
@@pomerlain8924 Can he be worse than Sammy? If he has his head on straight, he'll know that it's a taste of the bigs to get his feet wet, and hope the coach tells him to relax and just focus on being good positionally.
I hope Samsonov rebounds it is sad to see him go through this crap. He was great in last season. What happened to him? Does he have other issues and this is why Washington never signed him? I hope he saves his career. I love how honest he is with the media after games 😢
He hasn't been good, but what do you want him to do on some of these goals? 4th goal last night, Leafs lose the puck behind the net and its centered to a wide open player in front. Poor defensive plays and turnovers have led to goals all season. Goalies should be your last line of defense, not your only line of defense.
This was the same situation in Washington. Sammy would randomly get really hot and backstop the team to four straight wins, people would be chanting his name--then he'd have two months where he couldn't stop a puck without A+ defense. It got to the point where the Caps played better without him in net, because they'd instinctively insulate and protect the backup goalie. The Caps eventually moved on because it was too hard to build a system around an inconsistent goaltender, especially one who wanted a ton of money. It was almost better to play a worse goalie, because the caps D could play a consistent game. Also--dude desperately needs a Wii controller strap on his stick. Idk why, but the dude cant hold onto his stick to save his life.
The defense is pretty bad, no questions about it. But they still should’ve won plenty of more games and honestly be at the top of their division if they had actual goaltending outside of Woll and Jones. Sammy is shit, when Jones and Woll definitely would’ve been able to hold it down and maybe even steal games. If they had actual reliable goaltending outside of Woll and Jones that can hold it down, their record would be 20-7-6, good enough to tie the bruins.

One thing though he does stop the shots he is supposed to, and some extra ones to boot. he could be a good fit, as who knows how long it will be before Woll is back healthy and in form. two off seasons ago Dubas really gambled too much in the crease and now they have to pay the price.
With better defense goaltending and coaching they would be FAR better. Offense is NOT a problem. However if goaltending, defense, and coaching is not fixed you could be right. All of these issues could have been addressed last offseason and unfortunately it was NOT

New goalie coach was hired last year and helped Samsonov probably have his best year ever. Samsonov's performance this year is absolutely mystifying but I wouldn't put that on the goalie coach since Woll and Jones were/are doing well respectively.
"How many goalies have you guys gone through..." This should show Leafs fans the true problem. They have had an insanely bad defense for that same time period that all these goalies have been failing. Dubas tried to improve the defense, but the trades were nixed by Shanahan. Then, this off-season, their answer to the problem is John Klingberg. A defenseman known for being bad defensively. Anyone who thinks that the goalie is the issue, simply hasn't been paying attention for the past 5 years. @@thewickedone2676 The goals he’s letting in aren’t Defense. He’s not tracking the puck and his positioning is way off. I agree Woll coming back will boost the team and obviously improve the goaltending. Do you know the timeframe for his return
Since you mentioned him and not to rub it in, but Devon Levi has a better record than Samsonov this year. And that's playing behind a team that has been without half of it's top players for most of the season and really can't decide if they even want to compete for a playoff spot.
This was always the risk with keeping the Core 4 locked up. When you lock up 4 forwards to over half your cap that can't get you past the 2nd round (and previously couldn't get past game 7 of the 1st round), you limit your ability to patch up holes elsewhere. Before, it was the depth scoring, then it was the defense, now it's the goaltending. You should've broken up the core years ago to avoid this situation, but Leafs Nation didn't want to hear it and now the guy that was willing to do it was fired in favor of a guy that wouldn't fuss over the core like Shanahan wanted. I guess Leafs Nation and the Leafs organization doesn't want a winner. They just want a 1st round exit team that only gets past said round due to dumb luck. Until they prove otherwise, that won't change.

Face it Leaf fans, regardless of the fact you have a super talented Core Four and an elite defenceman, you are still basically a .500 team so far. Your team is underachieving, for whatever reason you want to list. Goaltending is just one aspect of the problem. There is also a suspect defence that needs to be addressed. But as long as you have highly paid prima donnas who can score goals getting the majority of the cap $$$, you will not go far. Your team is wasting the prime years of three of those Core Four guys. Should have had at least one Cup by now.
Halak. I was pissed off they never bothered looking at him, and twice he played good on other teams. Is he game-ready? Unless you want to risk ruining a rookie, I think the Leafs need to look at him.

I guess Shanny forgot that his Red Wings Cup teams always had a grind line/bottom 6 of mostly Canadians who gave a f**k about intensity/effort. Identity matters, especially when football style hockey is played in the playoffs.
Until they fire Shanahan and break up the core, this team will have the same issues every year. Great talents on the top lines and nothing else. Not a recipe for success in the playoffs. Enough already, let’s break up the core 4.
It sucks so much that Woll got injured. Woll is a rookie and he's been one the most solid goaltenders we've had in years. The way he plays is amazing, he doesn't wave around his arms and do stupid acrobatics just for the sake of "see guys, I'm being a goalie and trying to make a save" like Sammy does.
Yup. That is exactly what i expected. This is our team. This is exactly who they are. We once again knew all off-season what we had. We again committed after almost a decade of the same problems. Do we waste picks or prospects to improve what we can? Probably shouldn't, but do, don't, likely wont matter. Its a team who gets points thus later picks, And are too soft for the playoffs. Unfortunately, the matthews era will likely be known as a wildly underachieving group, and a management group too scared to change it.
@terryliamakeros4552 soft play equals bad goals. Sammy is most definitely in a funk. But how we got here is arguably due to soft play. Sammy and Woll got hung out to dry a lot earlier in the season. I still say the crap team play is what got Woll injured in the first place actually...

Oh yeah? well it seems you haven't been to Nationwide when we are playing the Penguins! THE most frustrating games. I hate Pittsburgh, and they always seem to find a way to come back in the 3rd.

Failure is hard. Usually you tell somebody who has failed to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and try again. But in Sammy's case, it's almost time to tell him he needs to try something else, and ($3.5M contract or not) I think that should tug your heart strings just a little.

It’s a lose lose thing.
Okay, Sammy has been bad, obviously; we want some saves here, BUT let's just look at it goal by goal.
1st goal = Lilly blows a tire, giveaway scramble screens Sammy, good shot = goal.
2nd goal = 3 on 1 from a bad change
3rd goal = screen 4v3 tip
4th goal = 3 leafs behind the net, an open guy alone in front
5th goal = Sammy wants that back
6th goal = cheating offence in OT and bad faceoff leads to player alone up front and a goal
You have a goalie that's fighting it , but make him face easy shots so he finds his confidence.
After Leafs fans mockingly chanted Dubas in that 7-0 win, this Schadenfreude since has been so delightful.

Good stuff Steve, on point, I feel a little better, thanks!

This was the same situation in Washington. This should show Leafs fans the true problem. They have had an insanely bad defense for that same time period that all these goalies have been failing. Samsonov's play last year was the anomaly.... this was the goal tending Samsonov was giving WSH. Same with Vanecek in NJ. Same issue.
Bobroffsky and Shisterkin have MUCH better Defence's and structure in front of them...Pretend otherwise,....and then be prepared for the same issues with Jones (an inconsistent goalie that has bounced around) and Woll (who really knows?)
@@michaelb5119So was Murray, Mrzek, Rittich, Campbell, Reimer, Gustafsson, Hutchinson, Toskala, ect. ect. ect.....Do you see a pattern yet?...Again, watch ~Columbus 4th and 6th goals....Alone, by themselves in front of the goalie. Same amount of players on the ice.
@@algrundau9441 he has the lowest stats thru 15 games by a leaf goalie since 1990. Sorry but this is on him. He's a professional athlete and he has to take accountability. He's not a scape goat he's playing genuinely terrible hockey. The defense did let him down on some goals, but 6 goals on 20 shots. Make a save. Why can a player who's playing bad in toronto not be blamed anymore without people rushing to his defense saying hes a scapegoat? Take some fucking accountability. Sometimes as a goalie, u gotta bail ur team out, the same way they will for you Sometimes. Samsonov has not done that once.
Oh man , the Leafs bring me a lot of joy , Keep it coming, Stevie boy . Ho ho , ha ha ,he he ....
Toronto about to trade for Kuemper 😂
Question; for 6-and-offs next start, could they just play the whole game 6-on-5?
At this point I hear Khabi is back playing overseas. Sadly might be a better option
I would absolutely take a 50 year old ex pro over Sammy right now
What's that Zamboni driver up to these days?
Veryyyyy curious to see what the blow up would look like if the leafs have an early exit in the playoffs this year. It would kind of be exciting to watch unfold tho.
Except what kind of blow up could they really have? Matthews has a full NMC. Marner has a full NMC. Tavares has a full NMC. Nylander is the only guy who could move and that's because he's going to be UFA. Maybe they could buy out Marner or Tavares, but it would be expensive. This is what happens when you assemble a team to entertain, rather than to win. The stars are comfortable. They got their huge payday and they know nothing will happen to them.
Or if they miss the playoffs entirely.
When does the coach get fired ???
