  • In this video we show you how we install Ice and Water shield in valleys. It’s pretty simple but it’s a step that should never be skipped by your roofer!
Ice and Water shield underlayment is one of the first components that gets installed on your roof. It sticks to the roof decking and seals around the nails that penetrate it. Every valley deserves ice and water shield!

What I usually do for a short valley is measure it and then cut the right length of Ice & water shield

If you are doing a closed valley do you put the felt through the valley over the top of the ice and water or just stop it with an overlap

You just overlap it and cut the paper with the same angle as the valley, overlapping the i&w by atleast 1/4 of the i&w width. Then just continue that up your next row of paper till you reach the top of the valley.

@@Josh-ww5kz thanks, I think I ended up running the paper through the valleys over the IW. Oh well, at least I'd it leaks I'll know who to blame....

Had a roofer give us an estimate. I asked him if he puts ice and water shield in the valleys and he said, "No, but if you want me to, I will." I decided then not to use him. Our main leaks were in the valley area because the original roofer tried to weave architectural shingles in the valley, which you're not supposed to do, since they stick up a bit and rain can get in the gaps. As you said, this should always be put down in the valley.

That’s insane that it was option to him. You made the right choice!

@@roofingtips I also asked him what underlayment he uses and he replied, "Whatever Ace Hardware has." We live in a rural area and we're up on a hill and get very high winds. No other roofer would return my calls, so I did it myself. Very difficult, but I know that it will hold up under any weather / wind.

@GreatDataVideos that’s impressive you did it yourself, but also bad that all the “roofers” didn’t seem to care.
