  • It's safe to say that BDSP did NOT live up to expectations and this shows more as when compare these remakes to those of the past. In this video I go into detail about why Pokemon BDSP failed as a remake.

My problem was that they basically took the OG games, made it worse, turned it into 3D and didn’t really add anything new. Even platinum had more things added than BDSP. It should’ve been like ORAS where they added so much new things from mechanics to Redesigns to plot, that it basically felt like a new game but still felt true to the original… ORAS is how a REMAKE should be

And honestly, with the topic of Platinum...I still can't understand why they never make remakes for the third game of a group! Like, an Ocean Blue or a Thunderous Yellow or a Beta Emerald or a pending name for a Crystal remake or a Glistening Platinum or-
Like, they went the extra mile of making game triplets in the old days, but only made doubles in remakes! I literally forgot Crystal existed because they only made HeartGold and SoulSilver

@@damienearl8302 Yeah I'm kind of surprised we didn't get Electric Yellow, Mind Crystal, or Delta Emerald, although HGSS does have a lot of stuff from Crystal like the Legendary Dog plotline to the point where HGSS is basically a Crystal Remake but still combines stuff from GS like the fact you can get Mareep since it wasn't in Crystal. I wish FRLG made it so that your starter pokemon follows you though but other than that FRLG was good enough.

I so feel this comment. I’m a massive fan of the gen 4 games and after playing ORAS I was so excited for this remake. It was alright but definitely underwhelming. I also really miss mega evolution and I was hoping they would bring it back in BDSP. Just a big disappointment though.

  • @MilkLadsForever

The thing that disappointed me the most with BDSP is the lack of character redesigns. I liked seeing the characters getting refreshed designs for the current age. In ORAS, characters like Maxie and Archie got massive glow ups. I also love how Pokémon remakes may introduce new characters for certain features, such as Aarune for secret bases and Lisia for contests in ORAS, and Celio for the Pokémon Network Center, a feature allowing you to connect to other Gen 3 games in FRLG. BDSP didn’t have any character redesigns or any new characters for the new features. Imagine if we got a new character to introduce us to Ramanas Park, or redesigns for any of the characters in BDSP.

From what I've heard, Ilca wanted to do a lot more with the games and if you look at some of the concept art that Ilca made for the game, it looks way better than the finished product. The issue is that GameFreak really restricted what Ilca could do with the game, which is how BDSP turned into the broken mess that it is. Therefor, I don't mind Ilca making another mainline game, I just wish they were given more freedom to make their own interpretation of the Pokemon format.

What concerns me is the fact that multiple 3D iterations later and you can really see gamefreak and sub studios struggling in the 3D aspect of the development. Many decisions and assets in the game raise an eyebrow really quick to anyone with any sort of industry oriented graphics experience.
From literal seams in the meshes (rather than UV seams) to blending multiple rendering pipelines, to how they handle asset management, it's no surprise that many of the core titles can't maintain beyond a 30 lock.
Combine this with multiple other issues, and I genuinely think GameFreak has reached a point the name itself sells the series and as such they are focused pretty much exclusively on profit over quality. The reason for this is left to speculation, but something to keep in mind is Pokemon is almost if not 3 decades old now. 30 years is a long time for the creator to keep things up, and he isn't exactly hurting for money either.
If anything from the 3DS to now has shown me anything about GameFreak, it is that they are indeed 2D devs messing in 3D space and just no longer really care for the same values they had back at it's inception.

If you go near a ledge, it automatically counts as two steps so you get sucked in and jumped off a ledge, this is specially hard when you are trying to go up to Mt. Coronet. Like come on ILCA, of all the things you had to make it suck its the movement and your walking buddy getting constantly stuck. Also the standard formula is basically following the current gen graphics but BDSP, instead of following the better Gen 8 graphics, they didnt. Of all the remakes, this one was not made with love, this one was rushed to make a quick cash grab before PLA. Gamefreak should not have gave it to ILCA to handle. I'd rather not them have gen 5 remakes if they are just going to chibify it with the bad pokemon following animation.

I really dislike the old-fashioned distribution events and would have liked them to move on from that and add the mythicals to the game. It works perfectly well in an open world like Legends Arceus and SV, but it is just detrimental when it comes to the old style. I was struggling so hard to keep Rhyhorn on a similar level to the rest of my team. I had to spam rare candies and always use Rhyhorn in front of my team to have it keep up with the rest of my team that I wasn't even using. For me the biggest reason that it failed as a remake is the fact that it added almost nothing compared to platinum. Better yet, it didn't include some added content that platinum had. New Soundtrack is bad:
    - some instruments sound terrible
    - some tracks are missing
    - they abused of reverberation
    - new pokemon sounds/screams are not close enough to how the original did sound like
    - overral this OST lack identity
    Art ?
    - Blobbish cheap-ass chibi
    - Lakes don't seem magic anymore, the water looks absolutely normal meanwhile in the OG versions these crucial locations seemed so special with their vivid blue water (especially at night)
    Technical aspect ?
    - Capped at 30FPS for a 2D game like this is kind of a shame
    - We can see ugly pixels around characters in docked mode (only on emulators with 2K resolution it starts being acceptable)
    - The camera is too zoomed in for no reason
    - The UI looks horribly big
    - You can glitch pretty much anywhere
    Gameplay ?
    - Same as before but the attacks animations being lazy, I can tell you that the NDS visuals were better
    - No option to make the battles faster

I feel like I’m one of the very few people who didn’t mind BDSP being a 1 to 1 remake. I haven’t restarted my copy of Diamond I had since 2007 due to having hacked it and having 999 rare candies (I like to use to level whenever I replay the DS games to minimize grinding) but I have wanted to replay it. BD let me relive childhood memories and it was nice, but I do wholeheartedly agree it missed the mark as a Pokémon remake.
After Arceus it definitely showed that was where the majority of the effort was put and I can’t complain too much, but waiting so long for Gen 4 remakes and receiving what amounted to remasters was very disappointing.
That being said, it would be very nice to get FRLG and HGSS get some remastering too. Those games are so close to perfect and adding the current QoL improvements would be a much needed refresh. Just maybe let ILCA get some more experience if they’re gonna outsource to them again 😅

    the thing folks forget
THose games were "The best" because in a pre-bank/Home era, many of the remakes served as exclusive access to unobtainable pokemon: (Gen 3's FL/LG as well as Col/XD only served to give access to Kanto/Johto mons that couldn't be found in Hoenn. Thus only existing to complete the dex)
The same also for HG/SS (you needed it to complete the dex of Gen IV due to certain mons being unavailable since Nintendo was slow phasing out the GBA)
In the bank era, this kinda became moot and thus was a slow phase-out of a complete natdex
OR/AS, only existed for VGC competitive viability (folks needed the mark in order to take legendaries onto competitions outside of free battles/Move Tutors
LGP/LGE's existence was mostly to give access to Kanto mons in the new gens and the only way to get Meltan/Melmetal
BD/SP kinda is in the same boat by giving some access to Sinnoh mons that weren't findable in SW/SH and as a gimmick to link PLA.
in short, remakes aren't really nostalgic, they're just all cashgrabs that existed so you could buy them to complete the dex

I understand that the games every gen are gonna lack something, I understand that we should voice when something feels odd. But I also understand...the devs are put in crunch time, from a technical point of view they want to ship a MVP and make a bank, and any new feature or asset takes time to develop, create, animate, and test for it to meet the deadline. What I am trying to say is, I understand both sides, and the real culprit is pretty evident: making as much buck as possible in as little time as possible.

I think the artstyle’s charming and I consider it to be an improved version of Diamond and Pearl (strictly the originals not counting platinum), as it’s mostly the same game with slight changes. I feel like most of the hate comes out of fans’ expectations not being met, especially coming after ORAS which were more so reimaginings of the originals instead of straight remakes like this game is. My only deep criticism of this game is how absurdly easy friendship grows it sucks having to use bitter items to keep your party from becoming artificially overpowered.

They only released this game as a way to have very young fans understand the context of Pokemon Legends Arceus. Given how hard it is to legally play D/P and even Pt, GameFreak, TPCI and Nintendo needed fans to have a quick journey in Sinnoh to then later understand the context of the lore in Legends Arceus. While this idea isn't bad at all and should work, the main problem is that the ONLY thing that connect back to BDSP from LA is that you can get Arceus legally. Other than that, NOTHING is affected. You can't send Hisui mons to BDSP, which would have been great, and there isn't anything special you get when moving Pokemon back and forth between games. BDSP was made as a one-to-one remake because they needed it to be as basic as possible to not take away playability from Legends Arceus, but that itself was a bad idea as Legends Arceus really doesn't have post-game. Had BDSP included the Battle Frontier it would have been perfect cause you could use your Pokemon from the past caught in Hisui and then used in competitive modes on BDSP. I feel overall while Legends Arceus is probably one of the best mainline entries, BDSP is barely better than Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee and at the bottom of the barrel for remakes.

Adding in the Sevii Islands also helped link the R/B/Y story to the G/S/C one as well which is one of the biggest underrated things in the game. I feel like it's just not talked about enough because like 80% of the community didn't start playing until D/P/P and talking about anything related to gen 1 will get you the "genwunner" label and unnecessary attacks. Notice how there's some already in this comment section. Lmao

That or make a "3rd version" of Unova that uses the Unova of BW2 with the main plot of BW, having the Frigate be around but more of a planB (postgame you go meet Drayden with your dragon then LAZOR). At the start you would choose are from a city or countryside setting which character plots you follow (add a girl for Aspertia and new Gym Leader). Even better would be having the gyms scale and making them open, only needing 8 for plot but allowing you to get all 10 (11 if the Normal gyms have different badges or we pivot Lenora to Rock).

There are multiple games (not just Pkmn) where I've asked myself the question of "why can passionate unofficial Developers/Modders make these things that people want, and the company can't?". What I came up with is that 3rd word: *Passionate*. The unofficial people create these things in their own time out of a passion for what they (and others) want/enjoy, whereas, even if the company knew what we wanted...there's a handful of employees who (whether passionate about the games or not), would ask for thousands of dollars for every hour worked on these "Extra" features. It's likely not out of laziness that we don't get what we want, but them only going as far as they really "need" to. When it comes to remakes that were on handhelds like GBA or 3DS, i'm fairly certain it takes significantly less work compared to the newer games like BDSP, SWSH, and SCVI. They were typically working on weaker systems, with mostly pixel art and the occasional cutscene, if any. Stuff like that takes time and money for the developers, not so much for the passionate unofficial developer/modder who works on their own time and without a deadline in most cases.

    • @KingZoroark

We know that they've been trying to create other properties which have all ended in... perhaps not failure, but less than desirable games. @@brondermody3409I’m with you on that. Everyone trying to justify the chibis by pointing out that they were "always like that" seem to miss that point. In 2D it’s due to the top down perspective it is not a literal representation of what’s happening, you don’t get to see what they really look like until you enter battle or a cutscene and jump down to a first person perspective.
In 3D this doesn’t work, especially when half the time you are staying in Chibi form for a zoomed in first person moment like the opening scene. It becomes the reality rather than a perspective, and makes them becoming well proportioned for battles seem like a dream.

FireRed and LeafGreen: Enhanced experience of the original Red and Blue. Used the same engine that Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald did. Added an entirely new sub-region in the Sevii Islands.
HeartGold and SoulSilver: Took everything great about Gold and Silver and cranked it up to 11. More than enough new features to keep you interested and playing for months on end or even longer. Used the same engine that Diamond, Pearl and Platinum did. Contained almost all of the additional content from Crystal.
OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire: IMO the best remakes we've gotten so far. All the best of Ruby and Sapphire and then some on top of that. Plenty of new features. Mega evolution. Soaring. DexNav. Took content from Emerald and made it even better, introducing one of the best characters we've ever seen in Pokémon, Zinnia. Used the same engine that X and Y did.
Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee: Techinally remakes of Yellow which I believe was a great idea. Switched up the story of RBY ever so slightly which makes the games feel new yet so familiar. Introduced Go catching mechanic to main series Pokémon which while controversial, was a hit for many players. These games don't do anything that really blow you away but they're solid remakes. Used (seemingly) the same engine Sword and Shield did, though Let's Go arguably looks a bit better than SwSh did.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: These games do not enhance the experience of the original Diamond and Pearl. People will argue that they do but I just don't see it. Many of us believe that the original games look nicer and have more charm to them than these remakes do. They do not use the same engine as Sword and Shield, which is a first for Pokémon remakes to not use the engine that current gen games do. The games barely contain any Platinum content and none of it is what any of us wanted. Almost every single prior remake has included the majority of the 3rd game of that gen's features and content despite being named after the first games of the generation. The games are buggy, unpolished and were obviously released in a completely rushed state.
I don't know what more to say about BDSP other than I'm tired of hearing the same old defense for it. "It's a Diamond and Pearl remake not a Platinum remake!" has to be the most annoying one of all. Sometimes I feel like we overhyped the whole gen 4 remake thing but I much more feel like they just failed to deliver on something we had bigger dreams for.

When Gen 5 was first released, it was gamefreaks attempt at trying something new and getting pokemon off to a fresh start.. They made 150+ new pokemon and removed the national dex until the post game, basically forcing you to get used to the newer pokemon
because of this a lot of people immediately didn't like gen 5 as nostalgia is a huge factor for a lot of Pokemon fans and it caused people to not even want to play it, they didn't even give it a chance and immediately assumed it was terrible.
As a result the game did not sell much at all, and overall was a failure at the time which was a shame because Gamefreak put more effort into gen 5 than they have done any game prior to the series
Gen 5 had the most new pokemon, new animated sprites in battle with an endearing artstyle, smooth and impressive use of the camera angles, arguably the best story in the series, some of the best music in the series, well written characters, and so much more the games had to offer
But did that matter? no because everyone assumed the worst of it, everyone hated it because it tried to be different.
It was then where Gamefreak realized that putting effort to make the games feel unique and fresh isn't worth it, and that as long as nostalgia is the main focus, they can just make another crappy remake, or have pikachu available in the region and it will sell like hotcakes, they're lazy now because when they did put effort into making something new, people hated them for it
