realising that pokemon has had problems since the beginning makes you realise that its a miracle the series has not only lasted so long but has made so much money tbh
@@siobhannicolson5566 The moment I realised how scummy 3rd versions were since they were basically "hey, what if we had more time to work on the game but still have them pay full price" was way too late.
Personally, I always saw Pokemon as a quantity-over-quality series, but at least said quantity was pretty damn good. But now with the National Dex cut? It doesn't even have its quantity now, and it sure as hell didn't improve its quality in turn (maybe Legends Arceus to an extent).
@@tabbender1232 It may have had the longest development cycle in terms of Pokémon games, but compared to regular games in the vein of Pokémon, it’s still short af
I still wonder if some of even the bugs were intentional because how do you "accidently" make a whole remake on another engine share the exact same glitches if not by wanting to do that?
@boshwa20 I think they slowed down adding new pokemon because creating 100+ every few years was quickly becoming unsustainable. They also had the mega evolutions to design.
I do think they should have had more encounter methods in gen 6, since it did make Kalos lack some identity when 10 pokemon could be in each patch of grass
I think that already started with Black and White 2 (the sheer joy on my face the first time when in one of the first routes I can easily catch mareep and riolu).
@Diablocera BW1 has some really good Pokemon. Ferrothorn, the starters, the fossils, Darmanitan, Krookodile, Scolipede, Leavanny, Reuniclus and Gothitelle, Bisharp, Conkeldurr... And more that I haven't mentioned, most of which are great team members and all appeal to different people. Even the elemental monkeys. Personally I kinda like Simipour, and Principal Simipour in Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon was pretty cool
@Mimiyan_or_Pikapikafan my biggest problem with unova pokemon is their evolution levels are fucking ridiculous. But that being said you can deadass easily build a full team quite easily by driftveil the desert alone you can get darumaka scraggy sandile and sygiliph (don't remember spelling)
@LegendaryCaptain their evo levels are an issue post Unova unfortunately yeah. Other than Larvesta and Zweillous tho, I can't think of any other Pokemon that didn't have their levels work out in BW1
@Mimiyan_or_Pikapikafan it's really annoying when stuff like braviary and mienshao return in other dexes and they STILL have those levels like you can get a Mienfoo before 2nd gym in x and y but it's still the same ridiculous evolution level
So I’m not a big fan of the whole “trading the mon to players just starting the game” is that it requires you to know someone who’s already beaten the game to help you. Meaning person A has limited choices so that person B has more, which isn’t the best way to design a game imo.
It's also a bit silly when the Daycare has been around since gen 2 Want to give a friend a level 10 rhyhorn or start your playthrough with a team made of post game or game locked mons? Get eggs, hatch eggs, raise the mon to whatever lowish level you wanted by biking for like 20 minutes. Done.
oh yeah I didn't know how to put that feeling into words, but it feels like it's going a bit too fast lol. It's kinda trying to fit a 1 min timeframe while not actually having that restriction, every "scene" has like a whole arc with a joke/punchline and stuff,,, but I still do appreciate having the whole thing in one vid as they all talk about the same topic
Considering I’ve seen most of his content as shorts, it makes sense. Make once Video, get good runtime from those watching. Upload the good clips to shorts, ease of editing and likely more eyes
This might be a hot take, but I definitely prefer regional dexes between 200-250 members big, as long as all 18 types are evenly distributed. I mean, Legends Arceus only had 242 Pokémon and no one complained that Dex was too small or unbalanced, and it’s basically Platinum with an upgrade.
Agreed, I prefer 200-400 pokemon regional pokedexs because it makes said regional Dex more memorable, also if every pokemon was included, the region would have to either be massive to evenly distribute every pokemon or have 20+ pokemon on the same route
@@caterpillarh8490 I actually hate any Regional Dex over 300, which is basically B2W2 onwards. Overshadows and drowns out the new batch of Pokémon while giving the player way too many options. Every game should have every Pokémon, but a Regional Dex should be short, sweet and to the point efficient.
@@WhiteRaven696 B2W2 definitely had the most balanced pokedex, 50/50 split between new and old pokemon giving both the spotlight and don't swarm you with too many mons but also doesn't leave you with too few
@@caterpillarh8490 But that's because the actual Unovan batch was 156. The very next generation had 72 Kalosian Pokémon and a Kalosian Regional Dex of 457. With small batches like Kalos' 72, Alola's 88, Galar's 96, and Paldea's 120, a Regional Dex of 200-250 is better IMO.
as a worldbuilding nerd, the new pokemon rosters of 80 + a million returning pokemon consistent across most of the 3d games makes pokemon not feel special outside of their debut game release cycle. If you can find almost anything almost anywhere it feels homogenized and bland
I actually like how Gible is in the secret part of Wayward Cave: like you said, it’s extremely well hidden to the point you almost have to already know it’s there, and I like that placement for my first stage pseudo-Legendaries, gives them an exclusivity and rewards you for managing to sniff them out. Funny how that was the one you brought up immediately before saying Platinum fixed a bunch too, since Platinum did actually do something nice for Garchomp. In Diamond and Pearl, that prior knowledge isn’t enough because the cave entrance itself is blocked by Strength boulders, but in Platinum those are removed. This is really cool since the Gibles are around level 20, where you would be if you went straight there after passing through Cycling Road: in other words, if you know they’re there, Platinum lets you get a Gible and slot it into your team at a point where it can build up naturally alongside your other mainstays, whereas Diamond and Pearl force you to wait until later and then spend time working one up to par with your team. To this day, I find the Wayward Cave Gibles to be my prime example of pseudo-Legendaries handled well, in Platinum anyway. Of course, on the other side of things, Garchomps in Scarlet and Violet are a prime example of how pseudos aren’t special in Paldea. I mean, Baxcalibur is cool, but why bother with it when you probably passed by every previous pseudo aside from the ones in the other version on the way over?
I wonder if walking in place next to the Strength boulders would let you trigger wild encounters. Could this be used to let you catch Gible early in Diamond/Pearl too?
It's legitimately memorable to talk to the Cycling Road hiker, get the hint about the hidden entrance to the cave and go "Wait a minute..." Or if you spot the entrance from inside the cave.
They handled Gible the best honestly. Much better than level 64 Hydreigon, which happens to be my favourite Pseudo-legendary that I can't use properly in the main story
I really appreciate the attempt to explain why these games made some of their really bizarre decisions. Although even with the arguments here about trading etc you still just wonder why on Earth did they think these ideas were good
If the trading theory is true it also shows another thing I feel TPC ignores: single players. yes doing multi player events & mechanics is great, but these tend to drop off immensely after they stop supporting the game and yet they do nothing to make it easier to use by yourself. this has personally reached a tipping point in the switch, where many players (including myself) don't have Nintendo online and soselect games, mostly pokemon, become less fun because certain mechanics or even whole parts of the game feel lessened. Not saying anything against multiplayer features at all, just that TPC seems to forget about those whom play alone either by choice or situation.
Oh 100% you are right I do shiny hunt and I have online friends who also do but I never lived pokemon as a "multiplayer" game despite starting back in school where most people played it Also it feels extra scummy looking back at all the generations and seeing all these gimmicks that were basically"oh boy I hope you have a rich friend with a lot of time so you can complete ONE GAME at 100% if not get ready to buy more things!"
Its because the games were flawed from the start. According to most things Satoshi the OG creator of the games got the idea when thinking of a bug crawling across a link cable to another gameboy. He felt that the urban areas had destroyed most of the nature he loved in his youth and his hobby of bug catching. And due to that he wanted to give urbanite kids something to have. The issue is Pokemon even to GameFreak at the time was not expected to be a smash hit. They made the trading thing with only urban Japanese in mind and mind you Japan is a small country with really high population density. In a large nation like America you might be in a rural area where you are legit the only person who plays Pokemon. Even that aside as you said playing older games makes trade evos realize how broken they are for longevity. If I boot up Red or Sapphire, I am not going to be able to use Alakazam or Golem since I got no one to trade to and trade back. They were proud of themselves on paper but did not realize how it hurts the game in the long run.
Ditto with me replaying Pearl. I already knew but got a whole new perspective of just how much junk I missed Platinum fixing, and man that climax looks bad.
As someone who discovered pokemon with diamond and pearl, the post game where you discover dozens and dozens of "new" pokemons was for me the most memorable part in the adventure
The problem is that gen v had better variety and you'll always meet the mon you need before a gym. Like we couldn't throw a Growlithe or Houndour in the region? I don't mean underground. Why they didn't make the Diamond and Pearl remake based on platinum partially is a mystery.
Diamond and Pearl really are rough games. There's tons of leaked notes about a bunch of stuff they wanted to add like a touchscreen fishing minigame, some ideas for 3D, more gimmick Pokémon like Chatot that used the hardware in interesting ways, etc. None of that really happened though.
This has changed my view for the (old and new) games a lot and it actually explained things for me, i never thought about. Thank you for that. Love your Videos
at least with ice-types it can be explained that the temperature of Hoenn is more tropical which could explain why there was only 2 in the entire region, but still at least the type balancing in the Hoenn dex wasn't nearly as bad as Diamond & Pearls (2 fire and ice, 3 electrics and 4 steels...seriously the original Sinnoh dex really doesn't have a lot to pick from with how horribly balanced it is where types like water and normal are extremely abundant, and types like grass and fire are like non-existent)
@@bulborb8756 Sinnoh's Diamond and Pearl also seem to be the first games that hate Glaceon and Leafeon. In those two games Eevee is post game after the national dex. Platinum does give you a early Eevee but the Icy Rock is again very late near the 7th gym.
For all of the things Platinum did to fix DP's problems, they still made weird choices. Most significant imo is the removal of the Misdreavus, Murkrow, Glameow, and Stunky lines. For whatever reason, you cannot obtain them in Platinum.
Oh come on Newsteevie, there are plenty of good jokes in the Pokemon community like.....um *checks notes* ah here's one. "Could anyone tell me what the pre evolution of Swalot is?"....see it's funny because the punchline will reference se-
Platinum didn't even fix the Dragon Type problem that DP had. The ONLY one they added was Altaria. It wasn't a bad choice, but still, I feel like they could have at least gone with Kingdra or Flygon as well
I don’t think it’s helpful to look at Dragon types in the same light as others. Until Gen 6 probably they’re supposed to be viewed as sort of boss Pokemon above the type matchup chart. It makes sense for the only Dragon options to be the box legends and the final boss’s mascot
@danielostrowski856 Well, when you put it like that, it's kinda weird how the only Dragon Types in Platinum are the ones you just mentioned, as well as a random cloud bird that doesn't fit into either category
@@pn2294 Still, I feel like they could have added at least one more. Six dragons is a lot, but when half of them are legendaries, it effectively brings the number down to three, which is a pretty reasonable number. Case in point, there were three fully evolved Electric Types in DP.
I guess nobody cares about that. Almost every region in old Pokémon games has at least one type that’s underrepresented, but all people ever talk about are fire types in Diamond and Pearl for some reason.
It's more notable with fire because people tend to build fire-water-grass cores, since that type match up is the first one you learn in every game. People tend to expect ice type to be a late game rare type, one whose role is often filled by water types. So when you're told if you don't pick chimchar you have ONLY one option, it throws you off as an especially aggregious thing. No one talks about how diamond and pearl's flying type diversity is actually worse than gold and silver's or how electric has it just as bad as fire and ice. Hell, the bug elite four's ace isn't even a bug type in diamond and pearl because of how bad its pokedex pool is on that type.
I always think Ice is more egrigeous because there are literally more Ice routes in D/P than Ice types, which is just bizarre. It's especially weird because literally no one can use the Dawn Stone before the post-game.
It feels so refreshing having long form content from you. I adore your shorts but it’s nice getting to take in your content without having to doom scroll
Why? It was its debut Generation, and it was the newest Pseudo-Legend on the block. They didn't want it to be easy to find. Was Dragonite or Tyranitar easy to find in THIER debut Generations? No. They weren't.
4:42 iirc rotom's nat dex number is just before uxie so the thing that makes the legendary battle them play might have been off by 1 accidentally including rotom in on the song
Something that easily can happen. After a while, you either get into a zen, or you just start missreading, and getting ahead of where you in reality are, and have to backtrack. It is like how Fire Fang bypasses Wonder Guard, not because it is super effective, (though probably one of the reasons why it wasn't fixed in gen 4), but because Wonder Guard saw Fire Fang, as the non-damaging charge up turn of a different move, causing Wonder Guard to let it pass through, like other status moves, type effectiveness be darned.
5:30 ah yes, the greediest thing game freak has ever done. Putting in a feature that allows you to get a bonus for owning a previous product that, even if you bought used for this feature, game freak will almost never directly profit off of. Makes sense.
I see the dlc and Pokémon home as more greedy. Since people would had owned Gen 3 previously, it isn’t crazy to think that they would just naturally use the dual slot mode. Also, Pokémon had always been, since Gen 1, a game where you can play with friends. Hence why blue, red, and green, were on handheld devices.
I never realized how odd it is that the Garchomp line is in the middle of the dex with it being the pseudo legendary of the generation until you said something lol
I love your shorts, and wondered what a long form video would be like, only to have a credible theory presented to me that completely changes how I understand the fourth generation. Bravo
Sometimes I really curse the fact that Miamoto suggested trait evos and version exclusive during Gen 1's development to make people connect more. Like say about Gen 6 what ever you want but it at least doesn't feel like its regional dex was hold back by wanting to force people to interact with others instead they did make them by making an actually competent online system for ones.
The best thing about Sinnoh is Steelix. Byron has one, Flint has one, Snowpoint Temple even has them but Iron Island is my favourite location for Steelix
Around 7:05 ish the trick house is mentioned. Whenever you beat the trick house, the trick master always teleported away/flew up into the ceiling. And that really bamboozled me as a kid lmao Always wondered where he went 😂 Just had to share
ive heard it said that a number of the pokemon baked into sinnoh were meant to be there mostly for hgss’ sake, considering a lot of the ones that didnt make the cut were evolutions of kanto and johto pokemon, it’s possible that they designed them during diamond and pearl’s development mostly for backwards compatibility with hgss, where they would see more well-integrated placements.
7 months before a game comes out is a long time. That beta looks about what I would expect given their timelines. Pokemon having finished sprites has literally nothing to do with them having time to balance the game
Sinnoh is one of the best regions in the entire Pokemon franchise; theres a reason Platinum is VERY loved. Sadly, D/P are still decent but a major stepdown from gen 3, thank goodness gen 4 had Heartgold/Soulsilver and Platinum to maek it one of the best.
5:30 In defense of Dual Slot mode, I think it was meant for players who played Gen 3 beforehand... I do wish they kept Dual-Slot mode for HGSS and the Gen 5 games Anyways, I think they could’ve reimplemented dual slot mode for BDSP by having Pokemon from Gen 5-8 appear if you have save data of Sword and Shield.
@@cmrobles The only features in HGSS that are tied to dual-slot mode are in Pal Park, which is the only area shared with Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, along with the Battle Frontier.
I will always defend Flint's DP team but I always concede that I wish these were done for the sake of being more interesting than "type x5" and not for the real reason of a terriblly limited dex. This dex is really bad and the plausible reason of trading isn't good enough for me to look past how many Pokemon I am not allowed to have just by playing the game by myself. Pokemon always seems to find a way to make some weird decision that ultimately hurts the game (or more likely, don't have enough time to think things through).
The worst part is that it didn't even need to be limited. It's highly likely that the dex count was decided before they finalized what new pokemon would make it in the game. If so, then they started with the arbitrary nostalgia number, added in the new pokemon that were done, then filled in what was left with nostalgia mons like psyduck, zubat, gyarados, and the OG trade evos. Including a few odder picks like the wurmple lines, whiscash, and some mons that skipped a generation like ponyta and octillery (both skipped hoenn) just to add some spice to the variety. The reason there's not more legacy fire types to fill out flint's team at least is simply because they refused to budge on the sinnoh pokedex. Same with volkner and Candice.
“Munchlax is still Muchlax.” HE IS MY ABSOLUTE BEST BOY AND DESERVES BETTER! Huh, never noticed how unbalanced the original DP Pokédex was. I was just catching what I liked back then.
back when doing Pokémon Platinum, I had a hard time making a good team, but my brother wanted me to play with him so he wanted me to wait for him before I'd do the water gym. He eventually took so much time that I ended up getting a couple Pokémon from previous routes, making eggs of them, hatching them, training them from the first route of the game and I got them at the same levels as my other team so I ended up picking from both teams for my definitive team. Didn't have a fire type, but Garchomp can throw flames so it's alright
PAY GORN MENTION MINUTE 1 we love to see it edit: but geninely tho its cool getting some insight on why sinnoh's dex is the way it is lol, this was awesome
I'm guessing a part of the reason Pokemon Diamond and Pearl made their dexes so small so that seeing them all would be easy in order to unlock the national dex and seeing more Pokemon. Then again, that kinda feels like using your vacuum cleaner to scare away the dog so that you can clean your carpet via bendy straw...
@@mastermarkus5307 The weird thing is that Game Freak have done a few things to hide that, Gen 6 to 8 had dynamic camera angles, Gen 9 had a free camera to do whatever you wanted, and all of the models have an idol animation during the battlefield at times.
@@Lithosagymfan173those "fixes" are just lame tbh, the Pokemon themselves are the main focus of the game and are just 3D husks of what the 2D sprites used to be
I honestly also think the BW sprites are also worse than the static ones They just bob up and down like them models, just compare how weavile was in gen 4 compared to gen 5~
Watching this video was similar to the experience of listening to a friend talking about a hyperfocus but really fast because he's afraid I'll lose interest if it goes for too long, and I loved it.
I always liked catching a dual slot Growlithe from Fire Red and trading it to friends

9:38 Correct me if I'm wrong, but trade evo's could be done through the GTS by putting it up for offer and asking for something impossible so you don't lose it, while you do a different trade in the GTS. Once that's done, you can recall the mon and the trade evo will occur. Dunno if it was intended or an oversight, but I do remember doing this by just trading early game mons and getting Gengar, Machamp and such.
Gen 4 was gen 1 pandering, Gen 5 was just gen 1 but different, Gen 6 had gen 1 pandering (xy is also red and blue) Gen 7 was more gen 1 pandering because anniversary Everything leads to gen 1 and that's hilarious.
I mean the games are rushed and are definitely flawed, but i don't really see why these would be reasons to hate them. They're obviously inferior to platinum but like.... what third game isnt objectively better then the originals? Unless you just really really REALLY like fire types and are sour about it almost 30 years later i guess
12:20 worth saying the mechanics are usually implemented before sprites and artwork is one of the last steps of development....but its still a little "interesting" to see which were finished first, as they were also likely designed and mechanically implemented first
I don’t wanna wish for the wrong thing, but they could stand to do this “thin pool” idea with water type in another game. I was a water fan for years and years but there is too many…
I didn’t realize you made full-length videos, as I’ve only seen your shorts. I liked it a lot and scrolled back in your catalogue and found you took a bit of a break. You should keep making more long-form videos, I really enjoyed it
0:35 - You cannot use Johto's limited Pokedex to excuse Sinnoh's lack of fire types, Johto not only introduced three new fire type lines (the Cyndaquil, Slugma and Houndour lines) but also had all of Kanto's to work with, for better or worse. How they managed to squeeze 10 fire types into Generation 2's 100 Pokemon while only managing a total of 5 within Generation 4's 107 Pokemon I'll never understand (and this is counting legendaries and Magmar's cross-generation forms). It's also quite absurd seeing a full video stylised like your shorts. 2:56 - Yeah, no. Hoenn was a tropical region and still only had 10 Fire Types in it's Pokedex.
I disagree. Gold and Silver had the same problems with its Pokedex as Diamond and Pearl but worse. It was the region that introduced Dark and Steel types, but the only Dark type available in the main story was Umbreon, and if you played Gold, you missed out on Skarmory, leaving only the Magnemite line and Forretress (which you have to go out of your way for) in the main story unless you're willing to waste the time to use Thief on wild Magnemite to get a Metal Coat. Only 1 new Ghost type was added, and it wasn't available until Mt. Silver, and Gastly was only available in an optional area and only at night. Heracross was the only new Fighting type, which like Pineco, required headbutt, and was rare. Tyrouge was a gift encounter deep in Mt. Mortar which requires you to backtrack after getting Waterfall, and you get it at level 10, making it unusable unless you're willing to grind. The only other fighting types in Johto itself are Poliwrath and the Machop line. That's 4 types other than Dragon that have 3 or fewer options for the main game compared to Sinnoh's 3. Sure, there were more fire types available in the Johto dex, but Houndour was only available in Kanto, and Magmar and Slugma were only in Burned Tower and could easily be missed. That really only leaves Cyndaquil and either Growlithe or Vulpix depending on which version you played. And even if with Slugma and Magmar, you're still only at 4. Electric also only has 4 with Magnemite, Mareep, Electrode (which are only available as overworld encounters at the Rocket Hideout in Mahigany), and Jolteon before the Elite 4. Not only is the type variety issue similar in Johto, but so is the issue of a lot of new Pokemon being hard to find or locked behind the postgame. There are so many Pokemon in Gold and Silver that are either only available in the postgame or are super rare or in hidden places that there are a ton of Johto Pokemon that people commonly mistake for being from Gen 3.
@masalanicholoff3593 A lot of that is because Johto introduced only 100 Pokemon, so they probably used (or more accurately overly relied on) Kanto Pokemon to fill the gaps. That and they were apparently allergic to putting Johto Pokemon in Johto (which yes they should've done something about). As for the Dark Type, it doesn't help that unlike the Steel Type, they refused to retroactively make any Kanto Pokemon a dark type, which while counterintuitive to the whole Johto Pokemon should've been in Johto part, would've at least given us options if they truly wanted to cling on to the old Pokemon. To be fair, Crystal did have Sneasel in Johto as a second available (part-)Dark Type, but it was quite late into the game already (though Game Freak always does that with Ice types) and it was unfortunately reverted in HGSS. Too bad Crystal didn't sell that well... I won't pretend that Johto's Dex doesn't have issues, and many people are becoming quite aware of this fact. But it also wasn't the point I was trying to make. Though one thing I must say is that at least Johto's Dex actually contains all of the new Pokemon, Sinnoh's Dex leaves out quite a chunk of the new Pokemon. They were mostly legendaries and mythicals (and not even just that in DP), but no other Dex had that issue.

Even bdsp was at the very least an improvement over og diamond and pearl... which isnt saying much since dp are arguably the worst games in the whole franchise but still (just play platinum lmao)
I've been waiting on a video like this to come up...getting certain Pokemon right before the game is completed or in the post game makes no sense, because at that point it's not worth using. Sinnoh and Johto are very similar with this, and I am glad Crystal/Platinum were more generous.
I wonder if it was my comment what got you into making this investigation,,, in any case, very interesting! sinnoh truly has some wacky stuff going on. I find it kinda funny how my final team on platinum years ago included a bunch of these "well it's not like you have many other options" mons, those being rapidash, pachirisu and piloswine lol
I believe it was done by junichi masuda due to game design. unlike kalos and alola which is fairly linear, sinnoh is kinda semi open..so the pokemon available here are intentionally limited so people will not get / deal with strong pokemon.
DP actually has more re pokemon available than BW and the Kanto games because all 151 can be obtained before the league unlike in those Flint doesn't call himself a fire specialist in DP Fire type is rare in every game and you having to use it is an arbitrary fan rule Some cross gen evos being post game locked helped making them hype and they were used as kind of representatives of high level/serious play in games like PBR
Fire is a rare type, but even in gen 1 there were 4 options not counting the starter or legendaries. Gen 3 - which had a fire problem itself - also had... 4 options not counting the starter (torkoal, magcargo, ninetails, and camerupt). Gen 2 had 3-4 "normal" ones in arcanine/vulpix, flareon (crystal), rapidash, and magmar. And so leading up to diamond and pearl, they been consisting giving fire type enough options to build almost a complete team of six for the player/type specialists to pick from. Then you get to D/P and the only non-starter of the type is rapidash lol. It's silly. For the record, BW has 4 "normal" fire options again, though heatmor is admittedly too late to be considered for most play through. B2W2 almost doubled that number, and you're typically spoiled for (any type) options from gen 6 onward.
@@jaernihiltheus7817 Wow it has 4 lines instead of 2 what a big change Reminder that pokemon games weren't made with your self imposed nuzlocke mono type challenges in mind Also if you're gonna talk about type experts having types that are too right... well, it's indeed a thing that happens, but uh have you looked at Glacia's team in RSE? It's much, much worse than DP Flint, betraying his main type is much better than having not fully evolved pokemon and repeats.
They never released an Emerald remake, or a Yellow remake. The only "third version remake" they ever did was Crystal. So 1 out of 4 is not a trend, its an exception. If only they did it with a better Gen than 2.
I am only missing TWO Pokemon for the National pokedex in my Black 2, and it’s Glameow and Purugly. I own every previous Pokemon game BESIDES White 2 and Pearl. 😂
Fun fact i added up all the new pokemon (besides mythicals) and their evolution lines and they added up to exactly 140 or so pokemon, so they could have done a bw1 style pokedex where they only have new pokemon and their evo lines in dp so if they really wanted just 151 pokemon in the dex they could have done it with new pokemon
DP's limited dex is something of a reason to play it for me nowadays. My diamond nuzlocke was one of the most interesting I've ever had because of all the niche pokemon I used due to limited options. Heck, this year I did a mono-ground run of Diamond and specifically chose it over Platinum so that I'd use the less popular options rather than filling the team with Gliscor, Mamoswine and Rhyperior
"The big guys locked behind this are Magby, Elekid, and Gligar. Three of the most popular new evolutions too!" The chads: *Loads up Pokemon Battle Revolution*
I truly don’t understand why BDSP didn’t use Platinum as the basis. Change the Legendary you catch. Diamond and Pearl were objectively bad and that’s why Platinum was made. What were they thinking? 8:15 Yeah this was stupid too and really my only complaint with HGSS. Then add Giratina for a “Delta Episode” event. “Platinum Episode.” The only needed addition. In the Post Game, Looker or Cynthia is outside Turnback Cave, tracking Cyrus. The cave opens to the Distortion World where you find Cyrus and have a final battle with him before you face and catch Giratina. Then it ends the same way that moment did in Platinum. Actually when I said that would be the only addition, I lied. I’m fine with limiting the Pokémon available but they should’ve added the regional variants and Sylveon. I’d even settle for only Sylveon. It’s THE Fairy type. For as bad as BDSP was, I’d still be for them to use the engine for a HGSS HD. Again adding regional forms and evolutions. And adding the new Johto Pokemon to actual Johto. Changing up some teams like Morty having a Mismagius and Galarian Corsula/Cursola, Chuck having Annihilape, Koga having Sneasler and Overqwil. It would also make Stantler and Girafarig more viable now that we have Wyrdeer and Farigiraf.
You forgot that Feebas has: 1) Randomized 4 tiles 2) the tiles reset at the 00:00 EVERY DAY 3) there can be tiles in a spot that you can't fish 4) has less than 50% encounter rate and most of the time you will get "not even a nibble" unless you have sticky hold ability (Shellos/Gastrodon) in your team 5) the only way to get exactly your Feebas spots is to use a specific calculator, get two lottery tickets in Jubilife for two days (and save the game), and change the time on the DS in order to NOT reach 00:00 of the next day
No wonder it also ties with the joke that every gen4 team is the same. Like bro in D/P we had no other options xD Also Gible being that well hidden in a cave right next to another cave was diabolic. I wasted so many hours searching for it, just to find out much later I was in the wrong cave....
realising that pokemon has had problems since the beginning makes you realise that its a miracle the series has not only lasted so long but has made so much money tbh
@@siobhannicolson5566 The moment I realised how scummy 3rd versions were since they were basically "hey, what if we had more time to work on the game but still have them pay full price" was way too late.
Yeah, but Gamefreak still had some heart and Platinum saved Generation 4 because they took alot ot criticism and fixed it then added more.
Personally, I always saw Pokemon as a quantity-over-quality series, but at least said quantity was pretty damn good. But now with the National Dex cut? It doesn't even have its quantity now, and it sure as hell didn't improve its quality in turn (maybe Legends Arceus to an extent).

I still wonder if some of even the bugs were intentional because how do you "accidently" make a whole remake on another engine share the exact same glitches if not by wanting to do that?
It’s crazy that it took till gen 6 for gamefreak to have the idea of “let’s just put a lot of fucking Pokémon in the game so players have options”
Because the fandom threw a tantrum at gen 5 because they couldnt use Charizard
The Kalos pokedex didnt even reach triple digits
@boshwa20 I think they slowed down adding new pokemon because creating 100+ every few years was quickly becoming unsustainable. They also had the mega evolutions to design.
I do think they should have had more encounter methods in gen 6, since it did make Kalos lack some identity when 10 pokemon could be in each patch of grass
I think that already started with Black and White 2 (the sheer joy on my face the first time when in one of the first routes I can easily catch mareep and riolu).
Just started playing Y for the first time and man I noticed right away there were so many options for team building 😂
0:36 BW1 's limited Pokedex had over 150 new Pokemon, so there's a lot of variety, it just forced you to use new Pokemon
Which I whole heartedly believe in
@Diablocera BW1 has some really good Pokemon.
It's also a bit silly when the Daycare has been around since gen 2
Want to give a friend a level 10 rhyhorn or start your playthrough with a team made of post game or game locked mons? Get eggs, hatch eggs, raise the mon to whatever lowish level you wanted by biking for like 20 minutes. Done.
I dunno how to explain it exactly but this video feels like it was edited like a short, or in a way that it could be easily cut up into shorts.
oh yeah I didn't know how to put that feeling into words, but it feels like it's going a bit too fast lol.

I enjoyed reading your comment, but i barely knew about the Gible cave, but i find it quite cool!!! ❤❤
I wonder if walking in place next to the Strength boulders would let you trigger wild encounters. Could this be used to let you catch Gible early in Diamond/Pearl too?
@ No. The thing about Gibles is that they only appear in the basement floor of the cave. It’s the stairs themselves that are blocked.
Although even with the arguments here about trading etc you still just wonder why on Earth did they think these ideas were good
They arent very smart people over there
If the trading theory is true it also shows another thing I feel TPC ignores: single players. yes doing multi player events & mechanics is great, but these tend to drop off immensely after they stop supporting the game and yet they do nothing to make it easier to use by yourself. this has personally reached a tipping point in the switch, where many players (including myself) don't have Nintendo online and soselect games, mostly pokemon, become less fun because certain mechanics or even whole parts of the game feel lessened. Not saying anything against multiplayer features at all, just that TPC seems to forget about those whom play alone either by choice or situation.
Japanese people first and foremost
They tend to be more sociable
Oh 100% you are right
I do shiny hunt and I have online friends who also do but I never lived pokemon as a "multiplayer" game despite starting back in school where most people played it
Also it feels extra scummy looking back at all the generations and seeing all these gimmicks that were basically"oh boy I hope you have a rich friend with a lot of time so you can complete ONE GAME at 100% if not get ready to buy more things!"
@ honestly this just feels whiny
You’re complaining about something that was never important to begin with
ever since i replayed diamond and platinum a few years ago i realized sinnoh is one of the worst gens and platinum really saved its reputation
Ditto with me replaying Pearl. I already knew but got a whole new perspective of just how much junk I missed Platinum fixing, and man that climax looks bad.
You mean regions. Gen 4 is great because of Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver. But it's not amazing because of Diamond/Pearl.
You can't obtain Misdreavus or Murkrow in Platinum. You can get a Dusk Stone, but not either Mon that uses it.
Yes please! I need more long form newsteevie content 🙏

6:36 Actually Porygon no longer appears in the Trophy Garden in Platinum, its slot was replaced by Ditto there
This has changed my view for the (old and new) games a lot and it actually explained things for me, i never thought about. Thank you for that. Love your Videos
I will never get over them locking Froslass to post game in diamond and pearl because you can't get snorunt until you get the pokeradar
Hoenn also had a huge problem with Fire and Ice types, let's not forget, not as bad but still
at least with ice-types it can be explained that the temperature of Hoenn is more tropical which could explain why there was only 2 in the entire region, but still at least the type balancing in the Hoenn dex wasn't nearly as bad as Diamond & Pearls
(2 fire and ice, 3 electrics and 4 steels...seriously the original Sinnoh dex really doesn't have a lot to pick from with how horribly balanced it is where types like water and normal are extremely abundant, and types like grass and fire are like non-existent)
And dp has the same amount of ice types as fire (exactly 2 lines)
@@bulborb8756 at least Walrein is goated.
Ice really is overdue an overhaul - new lines, some new evo's, and definitely some more resistances
@@bulborb8756 Sinnoh's Diamond and Pearl also seem to be the first games that hate Glaceon and Leafeon. In those two games Eevee is post game after the national dex.
Platinum does give you a early Eevee but the Icy Rock is again very late near the 7th gym.
That Clefable meme is single-handedly one of the greatest memes of competitive Pokémon, it's up there with Arceus-Steel (Arceus-Flying)
For all of the things Platinum did to fix DP's problems, they still made weird choices. Most significant imo is the removal of the Misdreavus, Murkrow, Glameow, and Stunky lines. For whatever reason, you cannot obtain them in Platinum.
every third version removes pokemon and requires trading

That’s not a problem
Dragons are supposed to be rare
@@pn2294 Still, I feel like they could have added at least one more. Six dragons is a lot, but when half of them are legendaries, it effectively brings the number down to three, which is a pretty reasonable number. Case in point, there were three fully evolved Electric Types in DP.
@ ok
There doesn’t need to be a lot
This is the longest youtube short ive ever watched
So basically:
DP was rushed, BDSP was also rushed but better (slightly), and Platinum is the golden child?

Not just fire types. Ice Types too. Only Sneasel and Snover lines are available in the main game.
I guess nobody cares about that. Almost every region in old Pokémon games has at least one type that’s underrepresented, but all people ever talk about are fire types in Diamond and Pearl for some reason.
@Steflora to be fair, it is brought up in the video.
How did hoenn, the game with "too much water," have more fire types?
It feels so refreshing having long form content from you. I adore your shorts but it’s nice getting to take in your content without having to doom scroll
The idea of Garchomp being rare in its debut is crazy. Nowadays you can just go to any mountain and catch a handful.
Why? It was its debut Generation, and it was the newest Pseudo-Legend on the block. They didn't want it to be easy to find. Was Dragonite or Tyranitar easy to find in THIER debut Generations? No. They weren't.
It's not a Pokémon game if the release isn't half-baked.
(They'll fix it with a 3rd edition. Maybe.)

Considering the beta sprites we know of in retrospect, seeing Gliscor’s DP sprite feels like someone forgot to patch it
1:31 that edited Rosa is the most cursed thing ever

4:42 iirc rotom's nat dex number is just before uxie so the thing that makes the legendary battle them play might have been off by 1 accidentally including rotom in on the song
Yep. Rotom’s 479 and Uxie is 480.
It's not a bonus, it's required for you to complete the dex and have acess to all of the game's content
Shoutouts to multiple routes with Geodude in the grass.
It's kinda strange to me watch a full length video of yours, I like your content a lot, this is very nice
Like say about Gen 6 what ever you want but it at least doesn't feel like its regional dex was hold back by wanting to force people to interact with others instead they did make them by making an actually competent online system for ones.
this was great! i really enjoy your longform videos.
The best thing about Sinnoh is Steelix. Byron has one, Flint has one, Snowpoint Temple even has them but Iron Island is my favourite location for Steelix

As a kid finding wayward cave by accident was so fun felt like an archaeologist
ive heard it said that a number of the pokemon baked into sinnoh were meant to be there mostly for hgss’ sake, considering a lot of the ones that didnt make the cut were evolutions of kanto and johto pokemon, it’s possible that they designed them during diamond and pearl’s development mostly for backwards compatibility with hgss, where they would see more well-integrated placements.
9:38 the gts DID trigger trade evolutions back in the day. that was only changed during the switch era.
In fact you could trade Pokémon holding items too, so you could pull a Mindy if you were that deranged.
I'm pretty sure recovering your deposited Poké even counted as doing the trade back then, so you could evolve them by yourself.

I do wish they kept Dual-Slot mode for HGSS and the Gen 5 games
Anyways, I think they could’ve reimplemented dual slot mode for BDSP by having Pokemon from Gen 5-8 appear if you have save data of Sword and Shield.
I’m 80% sure HGSS does have some dual slot mode functionality

@@juanca2567 You should try this with Kanto/Johto dex and Unova dex. The parallels are much more evident
“Munchlax is still Muchlax.” HE IS MY ABSOLUTE BEST BOY AND DESERVES BETTER!
Huh, never noticed how unbalanced the original DP Pokédex was. I was just catching what I liked back then.
thank you for opening the video with the one statement i could never argue against
back when doing Pokémon Platinum, I had a hard time making a good team, but my brother wanted me to play with him so he wanted me to wait for him before I'd do the water gym.
PAY GORN MENTION MINUTE 1 we love to see it
edit: but geninely tho its cool getting some insight on why sinnoh's dex is the way it is lol, this was awesome
Why do people even like D/P so much? Platinum is like, the only way I can enjoy this region…
Also, I really wish version exclusivity wasn’t a thing…
I'm guessing a part of the reason Pokemon Diamond and Pearl made their dexes so small so that seeing them all would be easy in order to unlock the national dex and seeing more Pokemon.
Then again, that kinda feels like using your vacuum cleaner to scare away the dog so that you can clean your carpet via bendy straw...
0:06 Me running away from the pokemon community after I say that the 3D models aren’t that bad:
Honestly, most models are actually good and translate well.
Most of the models are good, they just lack animation, which isn't the fault of the models or people who make them.
@@mastermarkus5307 The weird thing is that Game Freak have done a few things to hide that, Gen 6 to 8 had dynamic camera angles, Gen 9 had a free camera to do whatever you wanted, and all of the models have an idol animation during the battlefield at times.
@@Lithosagymfan173those "fixes" are just lame tbh, the Pokemon themselves are the main focus of the game and are just 3D husks of what the 2D sprites used to be
I honestly also think the BW sprites are also worse than the static ones
They just bob up and down like them models, just compare how weavile was in gen 4 compared to gen 5~
Watching this video was similar to the experience of listening to a friend talking about a hyperfocus but really fast because he's afraid I'll lose interest if it goes for too long, and I loved it.
Babe, you can't give birth NOW! Newsteewie just postet a new video, hold on 16 minutes.
Gen 4 was gen 1 pandering,
Gen 5 was just gen 1 but different,
Gen 6 had gen 1 pandering (xy is also red and blue)
Gen 7 was more gen 1 pandering because anniversary
Everything leads to gen 1 and that's hilarious.
They just endlessly chase the high of the first pokemon hype. My hopes arent high but I am grad they finally tried something new with Legends
"Gen 1 but different" you're gonna need to explain that one a little further
I'd say gen 5 was trying to BE gen 1
What if in an alternate timeline, DP had a better 150 Pokedex? Including more Fire and Ice Types. Plus, every mon's easily obtainable in main game.
Love your shorts and videos, watch your shorts every day and excited to see you upload new content. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I’m gonna do a bdsp Pokedex speedrun to see how small it is
I mean the games are rushed and are definitely flawed, but i don't really see why these would be reasons to hate them. They're obviously inferior to platinum but like.... what third game isnt objectively better then the originals? Unless you just really really REALLY like fire types and are sour about it almost 30 years later i guess
idk how many editors it takes to run this channel but hats off to em the amount of stuff yous put out is crazy
12:20 worth saying the mechanics are usually implemented before sprites and artwork is one of the last steps of development....but its still a little "interesting" to see which were finished first, as they were also likely designed and mechanically implemented first
It makes sense, DP was always hard to replay because I had limited options for new team combinations

I’ve never watched this guy outside of shorts and it’s so weird seeing long form videos like his shorts
Even bdsp was at the very least an improvement over og diamond and pearl... which isnt saying much since dp are arguably the worst games in the whole franchise but still (just play platinum lmao)
Whiscash slander detected at 2:11.
That thing is a legend, no wonder it shoved Gastrodon out from Gen 3 and then gate-crashed into Gen 4.
And ate a Master Ball.
@robertlupa8273 and the only Master Ball in the anime’s existence too.
Whiscash deserves more respect on its name
@@ThatReallyIsNotOdd There's a reason why it has a W on its forehead. :P
WAIT WHAT YOU MAKE VIDEOS I JUST SEE YOUR SHORTS CONSTANTLY AND THOUGHT THAT WAS IT?!?!?!
Good video. Showing me where to get gible made me wanna play pokemon diamond again.
I've been waiting on a video like this to come up...getting certain Pokemon right before the game is completed or in the post game makes no sense, because at that point it's not worth using. Sinnoh and Johto are very similar with this, and I am glad Crystal/Platinum were more generous.
I wonder if it was my comment what got you into making this investigation,,,
in any case, very interesting! sinnoh truly has some wacky stuff going on. I find it kinda funny how my final team on platinum years ago included a bunch of these "well it's not like you have many other options" mons, those being rapidash, pachirisu and piloswine lol
You were cooking with that tweaking joke LMFAO
I believe it was done by junichi masuda due to game design. unlike kalos and alola which is fairly linear, sinnoh is kinda semi open..so the pokemon available here are intentionally limited so people will not get / deal with strong pokemon.
1:11 I think the Ice-type leader's name was Dee.
Btw this game is 18 years old.
man this short feels longer than usual
Prison Labor is such a good song. I love hearing it in TH-cam videos.
DP actually has more re pokemon available than BW and the Kanto games because all 151 can be obtained before the league unlike in those
Flint doesn't call himself a fire specialist in DP
Fire type is rare in every game and you having to use it is an arbitrary fan rule
Some cross gen evos being post game locked helped making them hype and they were used as kind of representatives of high level/serious play in games like PBR
@@jaernihiltheus7817 Wow it has 4 lines instead of 2 what a big change
Reminder that pokemon games weren't made with your self imposed nuzlocke mono type challenges in mind
Also if you're gonna talk about type experts having types that are too right... well, it's indeed a thing that happens, but uh have you looked at Glacia's team in RSE? It's much, much worse than DP Flint, betraying his main type is much better than having not fully evolved pokemon and repeats.
All I could think is how they never released Platinum remake at all
They never released an Emerald remake, or a Yellow remake. The only "third version remake" they ever did was Crystal. So 1 out of 4 is not a trend, its an exception. If only they did it with a better Gen than 2.
@@AlkronLoki But they usually put the third version content in the remake, like delta in ORAS
It went uphill from here before taking a ski resort down
subscribing to this channel 40% because i enjoy the energy and content and 60% because of seeing any other klara fan given the brief cameos
"The big guys locked behind this are Magby, Elekid, and Gligar. Three of the most popular new evolutions too!"

Concept for a sequel to this video:
What was up with Black and White's evolution levels?
As a kid, I put almost 200 hours on Pearl and did not know that the Battle Area was in Pearl
You forgot that Feebas has:
1) Randomized 4 tiles
2) the tiles reset at the 00:00 EVERY DAY
3) there can be tiles in a spot that you can't fish
4) has less than 50% encounter rate and most of the time you will get "not even a nibble" unless you have sticky hold ability (Shellos/Gastrodon) in your team
5) the only way to get exactly your Feebas spots is to use a specific calculator, get two lottery tickets in Jubilife for two days (and save the game), and change the time on the DS in order to NOT reach 00:00 of the next day
No wonder it also ties with the joke that every gen4 team is the same. Like bro in D/P we had no other options xD
Also Gible being that well hidden in a cave right next to another cave was diabolic. I wasted so many hours searching for it, just to find out much later I was in the wrong cave....
