    I have a 5 year old Alienware Aurora Desktop, and I can tell the Desktop version of the Control Center is trash too. (Dell probably dont give a flying fuck about you and your several year old PC. ) My nightmare started after a windows upgrade (from 7 to 10).
    The stock drivers just wouldnt work, random 100% fans all the time, the RGBs on the side of the case is not always working. - You have some USB 3.0 slots? Too bad... From now you will be only using the USB 2.0 slots!
    And the best part is that my PC always crashed on the Win logo at restart. Only booted on cold start. I read countless forums, downloaded and tried countless drivers... Finally this piece of crap is in somehow working condition under win 10. (still buggy as hell) Only thanks to some guys from god knows wich forum where I got some modded bios/drives.

  • @KILLOXON
    @KILLOXON 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The key point of Area 51-m is disabling the OC settings of Command Center (just keep it for Alien FX), undervolting (0.130v in my case) and downgrade the BIOS to 1.5.0 or 1.3.2 versions and the GPU VBIOS to the 200W versions available, newer BIOS versions are trash and power limits the GPU with no reason. I have my unit (9700k+2080rtx) stable at 4.88ghz, between 45 and 50°C at low load and around 65-70°C on high load. Those temps considering it's summer, I don't have any AC in the room and I live in Los Angeles

    Thanks for the review. But ahhhhhh lets face it, these machines are basically all money pits. They all throttle, never reach the CPUs true potential, and all cost a fortune that makes no sense. None of it.
    One last hope?.. I'd love to see a similar review but with the CPU delided, then INSTALLED BACK ON THE MOTHERBOARD STILL DELIDED (needs a heatsink height adapter), and finally re-pasted. Maybe then.. maybeeeeeee.. temps can drop another 4 to 8 degrees (as shown in similar desktop setups), enough to allow things to be more under control.
    As it is, this is a big waste of space, a huge waste of CPU and an enormous waste of money. All of it, a waste..

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean yeah, it throttles, as expected, but I personally honestly do not care lol, the performance is still far unmatched so does it matter much? Not that I'd personally buy something like this, but yeah the performance is still insane for a "portable" machine.

    • @teddym2808
      @teddym2808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JarrodsTech Believe it or not, for my uses (and latencymon/DPC sake as there will be no mhz fluctuation), even though single core performance won't be as high as with turbo enabled, the overall performance will be a lot more stable using that method. If it was a desktop, I'd clock it at 4.8ghz permanently with turbo disabled. 100% power at all times. Speedstep is what screws up and causes little glitches in DAW work (digital audio workstation). For a laptop, i think 4 would be safe. Cheers mate.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it's a lot of extra work, not every CPU accepts the same undervolt, you have to do some additional testing to check for stability which adds extra time, and if it's not rock solid you would increase your RMA rates.

    The Drop in performance on the GPU happens at 79 Celsius. It was introduced in Bios 1.5.4 for some weird reason.
    No OC doesn't set any soft thermal limit.
    OC1 & OC2 set a thermal limit to 75 Celsius. (Thus you will get thermal limited at 75 C but without dropping the frequency to 300Mhz, like you saw).
    There is a way to control both fans and remove the hard thermal throttle limit at 79C if you use HwInfo64.
    Looking again at the video, I just realised this ;)

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was because some of them apparently caught fire, I guess it was running too hot? Either way it really sucks that by default you have to tweak it to not throttle hardcore 😥

    • @Helifax19
      @Helifax19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JarrodsTech I agree.
      From what I've read some people were keeping the fans of quite & overclocking and playing for 6-7 hours straight (If you do that the GPU will reach 87C and throttle there as per Nvidia spec). A few days later, the VRMs in the GPUs would die.
      Did a lot of testing and with the temp limit set to 87C (you can bypass the EC limit from HWInfo) on Performance Fans the temp will still reach 83-84C stable.
      Changing the profiles to Full speed, the max GPU temp will be 79C. (All tests were run for 1 hour in Metro Exodus to really hammer the GPU).
      It would have been so awesome if the AWCC would actually automatically adjust the Temp Limit based on your FANS profile. Sure cap it at 75C for anything except Full Fan Speed, but unlock it at Full Fan Speed (or at least put something like 85 C).
      I think the problem is/was too many inexperienced people bought the laptop and then pushed hundreds of Watts through it without cooling or without realising that it needs proper cooling.
      BTW, thank you for your reply! It's much appreciated!

    • @Digital_Immortality
      @Digital_Immortality ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this is correct, I have been using my Area51m R1 with 2080 for 3 years now without and trouble. HWINFO, in the sensors only part, you can set the fan speed to max there and that sets the limit on the GPU to 87C but it never reaches past that so it never thermal throttles.

    • @JarrodsTech

      It will hit the thermal throttle limit and lower the clock speed to prevent it going hotter. You won't find anything clear on the matter, because it's just a general rule of thumb that more heat = bad for most electronics, there's no exact number or information that says "if you run it at this temperature for this long bad things will happen", it seems like no one knows, anyway as I've shown here with some simple changes we could lower from 99c while getting better performance pretty easily.

    For all its troubles it has to be worth considering how much more versatile a laptop is , particularly when it has such a screen and offers highly personalised configerations at the point of purchase . Theres a high price to pay for the balance between powerful laptop and games that are optimised for RTX . Just so many variables yet so little optimisation , in a way that's what Dell have litteraly " dished up " in one machine . Massive desktop power in a small form , good design language but anything else wouldnt be future proof . My only real critisisum as a potential buyer , is that they should have swallowed there pride a little more and just had the trackpad with no switches " O and positioned on the right corner nicely " . Great review .... Thanks .

    I have serious issues with Alienware Control Center. Currently I have no fan control (they’re locked on balanced), I have no Alienware FX control, I cannot select profiles. All I can do is select overclock settings and see games library.
    Nothing fixes it except a windows reinstall. I’ve even removed Alienware Control Center on a registry-level, and still no dice. Not sure Alienware knows how to fix it, either. Tons of forums dozens of pages long with very little help from Alienware other than “we will tell our engineers.”

      I'm not sure, haven't heard anything on when/if there will be a new model featuring that sorry.

    What do you think about an AC 240W as the main source of power? Or do I need a 180w + 330w?

    Dude, I'm currently watching your video. I think there is something you don't know. From BIOS 1.5.6 GPU temps are capped at 74°C, which means it THERMAL THROTTLES at 74°C.
    I'm pretty sure your unit came with this version of the bios or even an earlier one. To stress test the machine at its best (without any software thermal throttling, consider downgrading to 1.5.0)

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tested with version 1.5.4 which was the latest available at the time of testing. I will always test with the latest version available and will never intentionally downgrade for a review.

      @@JarrodsTech of course, but I thought you should mention this in your video for knowledge purposes and testing circumstances.

      When Asus have review units available in Australia, they told me there is some sort of delay so I am waiting on them. Not sure of the price.

      I don't know yet, in theory they will make next gen GPUs compatible, but who knows if that will be successful or not.
