    At one point I didn't know that they made laptops that can use desktop components, this is awesome. I used to wish they'd make systems that are truly mobile desktops meaning ease of CPU upgradability and this is it, the only drawback other than price is the proprietary motherboard but that's a thing in desktop prebuilds as well anyways. I'm definitely starting to think about getting one of these as opposed to an XPS 17, the main drawback is that I'll look like a nerd but ah well

    Lisa, I have admired your reviews from afar for many years. But I have been slumming it with a 1080p 75Hz GTX1070 HP Omen 15 rocking a 7th gen i7 for just as many years. (and a 15" Surface Book 2, which I have literally just killed with a drop of water) This Christmas, I have something coming that I though was going to be yet another disaster in what has until now been a complete year of disasters. Finally, at the end of the year, it's coming right.
    I haven't been working at my current company all that long (since end of April '19), but they recently announced a "restructuring" (set of economic lay-offs), and, reluctantly, I re-activated my job searches when it was announced that QA personnel would be at risk of redundancy (and only voluntary redundancy claims would be considered if you had been working there for less than two years, which I had).
    Now I used to do quality auditing and consultancy a couple of years ago, and I loved it, and I was coining it in also. Then my mother began to ail with dementia, and she worried what to do despite the fact that I told her carers whatever was coming up. So I quit my lucrative, interesting job for a more 9 to 5 one with a short commute distance. I had been renting, so I just moved back into my mother's home (my old home as a kid, and I'm single now, not from choice) to look after her. Money started going left and right, and I was earning less. Then my mother died. Then I lost that job through redundancy,, and I hadn't been there long enough to earn redundancy money. Then I had to pay for the funeral, because my older sister and my brother-in-law couldn't afford to help other than with the catering. And I was never going to allow my mother to go to her grave (with my father, who dies two years before) in a cardboard coffin, so it was a mahogany coffin with polished brass handles and fittings.
    I have been broke ever since.
    So I was just a little nervous that it would be yet another crack of doom in a ghastly year.
    But the day after I re-activated my job searches, I was head-hunted during the voluntary redundancy period, at a higher rate, with a significant car allowance and mileage, working from home. the job I love for its value to customers, and it also makes me rich.
    Long story short, at Christmas, (well 21st December, in fact), I will be receiving over £11,000, and starting my new job in 05January 2021. I will be blowing less than half on an Alienware A51M R2 maxed out, but with a 1080p high refresh rate rather than the outdated 4k 60Hz version (silly boy, if I buy that one, I ill always be limited to 60Hz refresh rate, no matter what game I play.
    And I will still be able to give my sister and her family with the wherewithal to share a great Christmas with all of them. And I'll still have more money left than my starting salary for a month!

    • @Dragonblaster1
      @Dragonblaster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I lost my Surface Book 2 from the tiniest drop of water, too. I now have the maxed-out A52 R2 with the Full HD screen. It is bomb-proof compared to the Surface Book.

    Very, very helpful review. Lisa, I’m looking at the Area51M R2 with an i7-10700K and RTX 2080 Super (I’m assuming it’s a mobile GPU whereas the CPU I guess is a desktop CPU in a laptop). I’m mostly thinking in terms of the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and am looking at an online bottleneck calculator and wondering if the large gap between the CPU and GPU should be a concern. If I run into stutters can I just undervolt the CPU? Obviously, like you said, the RTX 2070 Super is much cheaper but I’m thinking it will presumably pump out a few more frames per second and with this demanding simulator every extra frame counts. Do you agree? Would you still advise an RTX 2070 Super for this flight sim? Or do you think the frame rates of the 2070S and 2080S will be on par with one another? I’m going with an i7 over an i9 purely for thermal considerations as you noted. You also stated that the 2070S thermals would be a little less than the 2080S. So, basically my overall question for you is; Do you think for a few more frames per second I n the flight sim (where 30-40 fps is considered good for this demanding sim) that the lower thermals of the 2070S outweigh those few extra frames? Or do you think the 2080S with a bit higher thermals is worth it for the few extra frames? I forgot to mention that I’ll be running the laptop in 1080p resolution via HDMI to my 55 inch 1080p TV. Why a laptop you might ask? I don’t want a liquid cooled desktop, sounds like too much maintenance and I’m not into messing with computer components. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Love your videos!

    This is a good review of the specs of this laptop. However, since very many people seem to be having various problems with it, should you not perhaps also mention that there are reliability issues with this machine, some straight out of the box? A lot of consumers that come to social media do so because they are likely in the process of considering to purchase the product. So, these reviews should not concentrate solely on specs because frankly, we can read them from the manufacturer website. The more pressing and telling issues are with the build quality and therefore reliability. These should be considered in all reviews!

      It will not appear anytime soon in a laptop due to the huge size of CPU's in the 3000-series. Its not slated for the R2, and my guess is we will see gimped 3000-series Max-Q designs going into the R3.

      but the 10900k beats the r9 4900h in most applications from what i've seen. especially gaming, only lower power usage seems to be the only real reason for going AMD against this CPU. Some things like blender are faster in AMD yes
