@ LED colour for the alien head and panel lights?

@@CMH4LIFE I'm not sure what you're asking. So, I'll assume: Alien head lights up to any color you want, then there's the exhaust light, trackpad and keyboard lighting. Alien Head Logo diffuser is too white meaning any color you want to display will be heavily washed out. I wanted like a neon yellow (safety yellow kind of), but through that diffuser it was so washed out that you could barely tell it was on. This is made worse since each zone treats colors differently. The rear exhaust is not as white as the alien head, so you don't have to darken your intended color too much. Though the Keyboard lighting is more white than the exhaust, but not as white as the alien head and the trackpad is pretty close to the color you choose on screen. As for display brightness, I have the 60Hz one (since I don't game, bought it for content creation and didn't see the need to go with the 120hz and spend extra money for that Tobi eye tracking shit that I wouldn't ever use), it seems very clear that it's an indoor computer. I'm at about 50-60% brightness on that machine in doors. My old Acer V Nitro, I'm at about 25% brightness in doors all lighting conditions. Surface Book 2 about 40% brightness. So I'm guessing the max brightness for Alienware is 250nits, not great. No noticeable light bleed or anything like that. Colors seem fine too. I hope that helps. Edit: Dell's website is terrible to use and customise laptops with. Suggestion; choose the cheapest option and then customise up. You're not saving money, but if you're like me and don't want the 120Hz with mandatory Tobii then you HAVE to choose the cheaper options first since the expensive ones don't offer the 60Hz panel option without the Tobii eye tracker. I also wanted an anti-raid based laptop, I'm afraid of Raid's volatility and the way they divvy up data. Plus I always intend to put my own storage and ram in so I go the cheapest route on those two, too. Only thing I really splurged on was the CPU, GPU, and Window 10 pro since even if you fresh-install windows, you can use the digital key on the reinstall version to keep "Pro" status without needing to buy a key. Though luckily the bloatware seemed lighter than previous dells I"ve owned.
Admiration from me for going through that disassembly and not just saying 'can be done'. Good review, impressive machine. And this is the basis of a real workstation more so than some of Dell's Precision line.

Just the man I'm looking for, I'm getting a laptop and really want this one but I'm hesitant. I'm wanting to learn and take up video editing as a part time gig to do small freelance jobs on upwork so I need the laptop to double as a video editing machine, I see the contrast ratio is 500:1 which is (from what I can see) terrible. Can you happily video edit on this or do you need an external monitor?
I definitely use an external monitor, but not because of the color specs. 1080p is just not enough screen real estate for editing. Very happy with the performance and thermals, and in “quiet” mode it’s surprisingly silent.

I must give Lisa credit. She pulls no punches. She is fair. She gives the credit where it is due, but she nailed it on the speakers. Amazing review! LOVE it! Not the comp I thought it would be (think I confused this for something else I saw in a CES 2019 overview, lol), but still really interesting! Love the DBZ shirt, too!
The day gamer laptops are partly watercooled is the day I buy one, and yeees I know it is hard to pull off. Really good review tho and interesting to see what Alienware can do it is impressive
@@mikedgreat1 Config = i7 - 8700 / 16 GB Ram / 1TB hybrid / RTX 2070 / Lunar light . Dell called me on April 1st asking me to cancel and reorder the laptop and they promised to give it a priority. So I did what they asked . Still waiting
I wanna love it but i'm just not huge on the design, I have a 17 R4 which i love and have never had issues with but would prefer if they stuck to that older design
Yeah I just grabbed the 17r5 open box in excellent/new condition with a 1070 oc and i7 8750h with 16gb of ram 2666 mhz and 256ssd plus 1tb hard drive for 1200 bucks! It was a steal and is what drove me away from the area51m especially since I already have the graphics amp.
Hi Lisa, great reivew. Can you please let me know, does the alienware area 51m have desktop class or laptop class gtx 2060, 2070? Want to upgrade from my 15 r3 with gtx 1070, the max-q seem like a downgrade and laptop class 2070 is a minor upgrade only.
I also had an Alienware 15 r3 with the 1070 and now I have the a 51m with the 2070. The a51m has a desktop class gpu and cpu. The 2070 is significantly faster than the 1070. I bought mine on dell outlet saved over 600 dollars. DO NOT GET ONE WITH THE 60HZ screen!! The 144hz is a must.
What i got: Clevo p775g1, rtx 2080, 9700k, one fire cuda SSHD 2TB, one barracuda 5TB, one XPG gammix M.2 2TB, 64 Gig 2666mz RAM and still have a m.2 slot left to play with. I got the base machine for half the price whats featured in this video and even with the extra upgrades i am no event close the price asked by Dell. I dont want to brag i am just saying there are better opportunities if you want a monster laptop, its not as good looking but my god its killing it for the price i paid.
Thanks again for an informative review I think I will spring for this over the MSI Raider but which configuration is best for gaming as I will get RTX 2080 and the I9 processor?
Lisa would you put 4x 32gb samsung 2666 ram modules in the 51m, I've seen articles that this is being done, installing 1 stick at a time and it works, just got to make sure the sticks are all the same brand and speed and size, thank you in advance for your insights.
Yeah 15' has terrible cooling though, I have the MSI GT63 with Clevo 16L2 model, it is very Thicc yet the cpu and GPu reaches 90 degrees in game no matter what... By the way I have a 8750H and GTX 1080 so lmfao
The MSI GE75 Raider does not get as loud. On performance mode, you have to raise your voice a little talk over the Area 51m, on balanced mode it only gets loud when gaming- still have to raise your voice a little to talk over it.
in clevo p870tm&p775tm with 9900K+rtx2080 specs,we have around 130-135fps for battlefield V . so alienware is either throttling or get less watt for GPU (80W,90W) or simply area51m isn't utilizing the power it could boast.
@JeremiahAnunnaki How did you remove the stain that builds up during normal use? Alienware recommends isopropyl alcohol and water but that doesn't work. How did you address this issue?
@requiemheidireprisal7824 prior to the spray caranuba wax(turtle wax brand) I use "power out fresh clean spray" by turtle wax. Used in Ferrari and other brands interior.
I really would like this comment but probably stupid question...the gpu I imagine is proprietary to Alienware where do you buy one? does dell offer it online?
Really the best I've ever seen, even the price is crazy But with everything upgradable this way, I really can think of it, as a portable pc, not a laptop. As I currently need a laptop and I was thinking of Asus Strix scar ii for 2200$ but for this, I'll need extra 800$ for the RTX 2070 version but I can upgrade everything!! Really hard to decide as the price difference still huge for the same setup!!
I would go with the 2060 version with the 9700k and just connect an external 2080ti to it when at home. A 2060 will be fine for a long time for travel.
Live in Canada ... lol ... just more expensive ... great review I am thinking about replacement for both desktop and laptop .... so very helpful... great perspectives
The 2060 was the best bang for buck so that's what I went with. I got the absolute cheapest configuration. I've upgraded everything for 1/10 the cost dell charges. Now it's maxed out.
@@WeatherxCalipha not true. Some did and some didn't. Dell tried to pull this crap force people to spend more money. But the negative backlash changed their tune real quick. Go to the website. The downgraded cooler fine print is no longer there. They all have the same cooler now. Mine did come with downgraded cooler, but I upgraded it. Luckily, I have a very extensive education background and I was able to figure out what they did. Basically they saved money on the cost of fins and manufacturing process. A little copper and cutting out an entire assembly line process saved them quite a bit of money initially. So I used a dremel wheel and cut off the blockers. Then I took measurements and 3d printed an air channel. A few mini self tapping screws and aircraft grade gasoline adhesive (because of generated heat), voila! Side exhaust. Now I know the extra copper would provide some cooling benefits, but I think with so little copper it would be negligible.
Just ordered the last gen 17r5 open box in excellent/new condition for $1200! And it has a full gtx 1070 oc edition with 16gb of ram @2666mhz (faster than area51m @2400mhz) and a 256pcie ssd's and 1tb hard drive. I decided to save the cash and purchase an external GPU down the line as I already have the graphics amplifier and can throw a hybrid GPU in there and OC to my heart's content. The CPU should not bottleneck anytime soon hopefully.
@@yummiermussel5331 I had a 15 r3 with a 1070. I just got an Asus rog g703 with a gtx 1080. It's got 2 power bricks. It's definitely kind of annoying lol. Honestly contemplating on returning it but it's hard because it's a good laptop. Just don't see why it needs to have two power bricks.
so how come you got a physics test of 80 fps and i only 57.6 . i got rtx 2080 aswell. ? can someone explain this to me? alienware area 51m . i have 9700k thou
What's it like with gaming on Linux I want to take the windows off no issue with the driver's do you need to use proton probably running steam Is it 2k display monitor
Now that is a beautiful laptop but it is too big and heavy fpr my needs. Looking forward to a review for their more portable 17 inch, the Alienware M17 :)
@MobileTechReview 9:40 can you use the "dell graphics amplifier port "(egpu ) + thunderbolt egpu at the same time along with the internal gpu in some sort of "hybrid 3 way sli" could you review this unit with egpu options ?
It's not cheap. But if that's what you want? And you use it for work? It'll make itself back in productivity, confidence, decrease in just stress you get from working on subpar rigs, and in joy. It's not close. Love you can run it off the smaller brick. PS. Do wish it had a sub-wooder, better speakers though.
any way to change the wattage? i like my aero 15x capped at 30w (and -130mv), clocks maxed at 3.6, keeps it cool. i dont see the need to go that far, but being able to adjust it to keep it under control is nice. also, think there could be an option soon to put 1440p/120hz in this? i think that'd be the perfect combo for the hardware
it shouldn't be able to hold 3.6ghz at 30w.. are you checking the power draw with throttlestop ? also you can watch bob of all trades video, he has one for the 15x I am using overpowered 17 and it reaches 55w easily at 3.6ghz all cores
@@khoonibilla it does, i havent stress tested it in a long time but at 30w or less it'll hold 3.6 in every game ive played. yes i watched bobs video, his first video on throttle stop is the reason i used it on my laptop lol. also, the reason i picked 3.6 is because 3.7 and 3.8 was an easy 40w+, but 3.6, could be held around 25w and thanks to the low power it was only around 75-80c instead of straight to thermal throttle which is what 3.9 always did
Are you using single stick of ram.. It could also be due to single channel ram. I personally like 3.6-3.7ghz for 8750h.. It runs cool with gpu.. Going above that makes my system shoot to 95C sometimes even after undervolt
@@khoonibilla cool and hot depends entirely on the system, mine likes to run HOT, which is why I did so much to cool it down. yes its single channel, it runs good enough now, when games start struggling I'll get the 2nd stick but my current priorities are storage lol. either way storage AND ram prices have been going down, and still are. from what ive read they're expected to keep dropping til the end of the year. likely until ddr5 comes out, so im not buying more storage, and definitely not ram until probably christmas
@@bradhaines3142 check bob's video on overpowered 15, its the single channel ram that's limiting your cpu power to 30watts, I agree, most chassis runs hot cos all of these slim and light machines are not equipped to handle the heat output by 8750h+gpu, thats why i consider 3.7 as a sweet spot so the machine doesn't reaches thermal throttle limit and clocks back down to 800mhz resulting in stutter in games, my older dell G7 use to do it
Thanks for the review, Lisa. How is the Area 51m compared to the same high-end spec Origin Eon17-X which has a 4K option with i9-9900K, RTX 2080 for around the same price range?
Alienware area 51m has 3 sided thin bezels which makes it more attractive. Secondly the look of this laptop (open or closed) is more attractive than Origin Eon. Currently 51m has no 4k display but Dell has announced that it will launch 4k version also later this year (link below). In that case 51m will be more costlier than Origin eon. www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-Area-51m-laptops-should-get-the-UHD-option-in-six-to-eight-months.414664.0.html
Top notch review as usual Lisa. Personally I don't understand the market for this laptop. It's not really that portable and expensive as hell. Why not just buy a small mITX case and build something. That said I'm that guy that used to take a full 23" high ATX tower to LAN parties and personally wouldn't build in anything smaller than a mid tower case.
Cheaper than a base model MacBook pro 15
And better
Limes I bought the Alienware 51m i7-9700k with rtx2080, really impressive product, everyone will love it

Do you plan to make a rundown on that sweet Area 51 backpack, shown in the video?
It's a really well designed high end laptop. I will consider getting one.
Amazing review! LOVE it! Not the comp I thought it would be (think I confused this for something else I saw in a CES 2019 overview, lol), but still really interesting! Love the DBZ shirt, too!
I’ll be in the market for a desktop-replacement-laptop when touchscreen becomes common. Getting anxious to see what the early 2020’s bring.
The day gamer laptops are partly watercooled is the day I buy one, and yeees I know it is hard to pull off. Really good review tho and interesting to see what Alienware can do it is impressive
@Sebastian Shaw yeah thats the thing for me modularity is just higher in desktops, but hey thanks for the tip it is interesting to follow!
Very good review. Please review the new Alienware M 17. Thank you.
I ordered one on February 12 2019 and it hasn't been shipped so far because of parts shortage . The estimated delivery date on Dell.com is 27 days
What config? I ordered mine on the 15th and its still suppose to ship by this week. I ordered maxed out except 32gb ram instead of 64.
Wow. I got mine last Monday! That's crazy! I hope they deliver before the expected timeframe.
Love the review and most importantly the DBZ shirt
It’s not an HK, it’s a 9900k
Mine has the 9700k
5:40 granny your sniping skills are better than mine ༼ ༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ༽
DBZ T-Shrit, reviews laptop with power over 99999.
What i got:
Clevo p775g1, rtx 2080, 9700k, one fire cuda SSHD 2TB, one barracuda 5TB, one XPG gammix M.2 2TB, 64 Gig 2666mz RAM and still have a m.2 slot left to play with.
Nice gaming laptop and good review
Its quite the cool and sci-fi looking desk- laptop. Though at that weight and size, probably not the best thing to be called 'portable'
Is the gigantic Lav mic in an attempt to achieve parity with the gigantic laptop?
Lisa would you put 4x 32gb samsung 2666 ram modules in the 51m, I've seen articles that this is being done, installing 1 stick at a time and it works, just got to make sure the sticks are all the same brand and speed and size, thank you in advance for your insights.
The CPU inside the Alienware Area51m is not called Intel Core i9-9900HK, it is just the desktop version Intel Core i9-9900K.
Thanks 👍🏻
Wish it came in 15"
Yeah 15' has terrible cooling though, I have the MSI GT63 with Clevo 16L2 model, it is very Thicc yet the cpu and GPu reaches 90 degrees in game no matter what... By the way I have a 8750H and GTX 1080 so lmfao
Love your Videos ❤️
Hi Lisa, You said the fans get loud, but how loud exactly? Also would the fans on the MSI raider GE75 be super loud as well? Thanks in advance.
The MSI GE75 Raider does not get as loud. On performance mode, you have to raise your voice a little talk over the Area 51m, on balanced mode it only gets loud when gaming- still have to raise your voice a little to talk over it.
@@mobiletechreview thank you for the reply Lisa and for all the awesome reviews.
A very nice laptop. But as usual. Expensive. Guess it’s worth it because it’s a upgradable laptop.
Definitely paying for the brand and customization ability.
dude, did you learn how to put a system together finally?
How does this compare to the Origin Eon17-X?
in clevo p870tm&p775tm with 9900K+rtx2080 specs,we have around 130-135fps for battlefield V . so alienware is either throttling or get less watt for GPU (80W,90W) or simply area51m isn't utilizing the power it could boast.
Love the t-shirt.
I have this model(top of the line as well) I keep watching reviews on it. I don't know why. I also love it!!!!!!!!
@JeremiahAnunnaki How did you remove the stain that builds up during normal use? Alienware recommends isopropyl alcohol and water but that doesn't work. How did you address this issue?
@@requiemheidireprisal7824 I use controller most of the time. I use carnauba wax to keep the white clean. it is still mint.
@requiemheidireprisal7824 prior to the spray caranuba wax(turtle wax brand) I use "power out fresh clean spray" by turtle wax. Used in Ferrari and other brands interior.
@@requiemheidireprisal7824 report back with results.
I really would like this comment but probably stupid question...the gpu I imagine is proprietary to Alienware where do you buy one? does dell offer it online?
Why only 1080p display? Why not qhd?
Revanth Krishna it can go up to 1440p
Is the screen touch screen? For the alienware area51m
LIsa is it getting to that time to re-show your new setup?
Lisa with the DBZ shirt! Love it!
i literally just bought that shirt at walmart today lol
Can i use it for professional video editing? Pls tell
Really the best I've ever seen, even the price is crazy
But with everything upgradable this way, I really can think of it, as a portable pc, not a laptop.
As I currently need a laptop and I was thinking of Asus Strix scar ii for 2200$ but for this, I'll need extra 800$ for the RTX 2070 version but I can upgrade everything!!
Really hard to decide as the price difference still huge for the same setup!!
i am litterally between those two options and I think i will go with the 2060 version of the area 51
I would go with the 2060 version with the 9700k and just connect an external 2080ti to it when at home. A 2060 will be fine for a long time for travel.
YummierMussel I ended up building a desktop with i9 and 2070 for little under 2k with 240hz monitor :)
Live in Canada ... lol ... just more expensive ... great review I am thinking about replacement for both desktop and laptop .... so very helpful... great perspectives
MSI Titan or Alienware Area-51m?
The 2060 was the best bang for buck so that's what I went with. I got the absolute cheapest configuration. I've upgraded everything for 1/10 the cost dell charges. Now it's maxed out.
Except the 2060 model doesn't come with the same cooling solution that the 2070 and 2080 models come with so GPU upgrades are very limited.
Good choice. The 1070 is as fast as the 2060 if not faster in some games. Those 17r5 run hot though.
@@coolmodee Yeah well I always repaste my laptops with thermogrizly conductonaut anyways. Also, I use a cooling fan under the laptop.
What's it like with gaming on Linux I want to take the windows off no issue with the driver's do you need to use proton probably running steam
Is it 2k display monitor
I wish it was a single 550w power brick. Having two makes it much hard to take places.
Dbz shirt!!! You rock!
Do you know if there will be in the future a GPU higher than the RTX-2080 for this laptop?
ZenSack hey buddy, go get your OWN time machine to answer that, I can’t spare any irradium cores right now for my DeLorean.
Great shirt as always
Cool DBZ shirt. Old school DBZ was way better than what’s on now.
Now that is a beautiful laptop but it is too big and heavy fpr my needs. Looking forward to a review for their more portable 17 inch, the Alienware M17 :)
Since when is 9 lbs heavy. Hit the gym ffs.
Like the dbz t-shirt
or the g703 i am guessing you ment 8950HK
This is a stupid question, but do you need to plug in both power adapters to maximise gaming performance? Or just the big power adapter enough?
She said that it will discharge without both plugged in on very intense gaming
The short is epic.
Waiting for msi gs75
Could I use this for college ?
What is the best gaming laptop for 2000$
"Auto-magically" you are awesome.
@MobileTechReview
9:40 can you use the "dell graphics amplifier port "(egpu ) + thunderbolt egpu at the same time along with the internal gpu
in some sort of "hybrid 3 way sli"
could you review this unit with egpu options ?
It's not cheap. But if that's what you want? And you use it for work? It'll make itself back in productivity, confidence, decrease in just stress you get from working on subpar rigs, and in joy. It's not close. Love you can run it off the smaller brick.
PS. Do wish it had a sub-wooder, better speakers though.
any way to change the wattage? i like my aero 15x capped at 30w (and -130mv), clocks maxed at 3.6, keeps it cool.
i dont see the need to go that far, but being able to adjust it to keep it under control is nice.
also, think there could be an option soon to put 1440p/120hz in this? i think that'd be the perfect combo for the hardware
it shouldn't be able to hold 3.6ghz at 30w.. are you checking the power draw with throttlestop ?
also you can watch bob of all trades video, he has one for the 15x
I am using overpowered 17 and it reaches 55w easily at 3.6ghz all cores
@@bradhaines3142 check bob's video on overpowered 15, its the single channel ram that's limiting your cpu power to 30watts,
I agree, most chassis runs hot cos all of these slim and light machines are not equipped to handle the heat output by 8750h+gpu, thats why i consider 3.7 as a sweet spot so the machine doesn't reaches thermal throttle limit and clocks back down to 800mhz resulting in stutter in games, my older dell G7 use to do it
Please review the Alienware m17!
It's great for pro audio
It's great for pro video editing too, and if you're a producer like me and have to move often, this is just perfect
Hello Lisa....we desperately need you to review the ASUS ROG Mothership like you do! #Muchlove
Alienware 17 R5 (120 hz 1440) or Area-51m or other (Convertible possibly)?
Area 51
lol find that screen aftermarket and put it in the 51m, thats a perfect laptop.
i doubt its possible though
