  • Fixing urinary incontinence after prostate surgery is without a doubt the number one thing that men are looking to overcome. A prostatectomy disrupts the involuntary muscle that assists with being continent, however, leaves uninterrupted the voluntary pelvic floor muscles that aid incontinence. This means that men are able to get dry following their prostate removal surgery; however, they will need to learn to control their pelvic floor muscles that are under their voluntary control. This video will show you some exercises to start with to begin training before or after surgery. The stronger these muscles can get prior to, the quicker the recovery time frame is following.

    Adding my experience, I also highly recommend cycling for strengthening the pelvic floor. Definitely works.

    I had my prostate removed November 8th . Fortunately I experiened incontinence 2 days after my catheter was removed. About a tablespoon each night. I did my kegels before surgery and am still doing them. I still got out and walked a couple miles about a week after surgery with the cathether still in several day. I had one leak about a week ago when I lifted something heavy. I've been lucky. Working on penile rehab now.

      This is awesome! Keep it up! You’ll want to work on kegels still as the leaking with lifting something heavy suggests stress urinary incontinence. A good thing to do is the KNACK which simply means initiating a kegel prior to lifting anything. This should help!

    5 months after surgery and still heavy leakage. When going out and to work, i use the pullups plus pads and now the penile clamp altogether. Doing kegels 4-6 times a day. Plus physical therapy. My urologist says expect a year or more of leakage. I have been walking regularly when not working because I assumed walking is better for building up the pelvic floor than cycling. I've had to give up so much, I really don't want to give up my 2 cups of coffee in the mornings. It's only water the rest of the day.

      Sorry to hear you’re still struggling with leakage after 5 months. It sounds like you’re doing a good amount of kegels throughout the day to increase your pelvic floor muscles. And yes walking is better than cycling for improving pelvic floor tone. You don’t need to give up coffee. It’s really amount recognizing it’s a bladder irritant and that it will urge you to urinate more frequent.

    After a year post prostatectomy during which I have done a daily kegel routine, leaking is rare and in only two circumstances: if I have to cough multiple times in sequence; and with sexual arousal. “They” say I can hope for further improvement for another year or so, but, assuming my PSA remains undetectable, I am satisfied.

    I had my prostrate removed 5yrs ago. Is it now too late to do these exercises..

      No. It’s not too late. We’ve worked with many people who are years post prostatectomy with good success

    Will leaking be harder to control if I am having 2 cups of Decaf coffee in the mornings?

      I had my surgery 12 weeks ago. I tried decaf espresso twice, and both times it caused more leakage at night. It also happened when I drank a few glasses of soda in the evening. Normally, I’ll have slight dripping when coughing(stress incontinence) if I don’t “pre-emptively” tighten a keegel. This can also happen when crossing legs or adjusting seat posture and forgetting to “tighten up” before moving. If I tighten up before a cough or sneeze, I can usually keep dry, unless it’s a multiple, hard cough. Otherwise, I’ve been dry throughout the days and nights. Best of luck on your recuperation. Stay positive and work on it every day.

      @@themightysquid Thanks and best of luck to you as well. 2 months since surgery and still leaking HEAVILY at work but I have a VERY ACTIVE job with lots of strain involved. Still doing Keegles twice a day. I gotta have my coffee though.😂😂😂

      @@acedawg278 : physical work will cause leakage. Try to tighten up before exertion. Keep extra pads on hand. If it’s slight drips then fold 3-4 sheets of toilet paper and place in pad. This way when you leak you can immediately replace the tissue rather than keep a damp pad for the day. I replace the tissue every time I leak or go to the bathroom. Hope this helps.

      Correct coffee, sodas, etc are bladder irritants and increase leakage.
