    Your slide likely wasn't going into battery because the 40 you fired prior to the 10mm left a carbon ring in the chamber. Ever fire 38's in a 357 revolver then load it with the longer 357's? Same idea. And a bullet shedding a little weight during penetration isn't bullet failure, especially with a non bonded bullet like the xtp. To be fair, that xtp performed exceptionally well considering the impact velocity is at the very upper limits of its threshold

      My M&P (4") gave me 1312 fps for the Hornady Custom 155s. A very different velocity than what he did here. 1600+ is insane. In the neighborhood of 900 ft-lbs!! But one could expect gel results to perhaps be quite different at these speeds. Also, it might even be too high of a velocity for these. Although they seem to be able to handle it. Those mushroooms looked somewhat smoother than what normally see. I carry the 155s as well but so far, just the Hornady Custom.
      I found video from The Gun Dungeon that has Underwood 180 gr and 2 clocked at ~1245, penetrated to 14". Another at 1230 went 16".
      My Hornady Custom factory 180 gr went 1161 fps.
      Loads of Bacon video has hand-loads of 180 going just over 1300 and those went about 18-20".
      Trying to figure out what velocity I want to load 155, 180 & 200 gr at is proving to be no easy task. Brass-life, ruptures, recoil, bullet-performance, feeding reliably...This video was a huge help in knowing how far a person might go.

    • @sj6404
      @sj6404 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, if you could get the bullet into 10 fragments that each go 14" then its a huge win. The whole idea of the FBI standard of 100% weight retention is for puny 9mm bullets that ONLY penetrate if they have 100% retention. Bullet retention is moot so long as you have one or more pieces that reach full penetration.

      I've definitely found 800x to be magical. It sucks that they've discontinued it because anything I share using 800x is irrelevant for you guys. Only really is valuable for seeing what the bullets do at those velocities. If I remember Blue dot is slower burning so it should be a good substitute with the 200+ gr pills. Complete bullet failure? I disagree. If a bullet fragments causing it to under-penetrate then the fragmentation is a failure. If you got 14" from the 155 and 18+" with the 180, then you had sufficient penetration and any bullet fragmentation at that point is a bonus. What's better 24" and 100% weight retention or 3 x 60 grain fragments that each penetrate 16"? I'd rather have 3 holes than 3!

      @letstalkcaliber704  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if you were going to shoot an elephant it be good to have that penetration and the 40 ball round does that better than the 10mm hp's but you could just as well use a 10mm ball round and be even more effective. Generally if we're not getting over the 2100 fps needed to cause hydrostatic shock you want to choose something that expands the most while still penetrating deeply enough. In that same line of thought some folks recommend ball rounds in 380 for self defense because of its weak penetration.

    Talking about Caliber. I've never heard of a 40 round. Now if your talking about a .40 caliber then say so. But I wouldn't shoot a 40 S&W in a 10MM. Bad practice to get into. And many Ballisticians like myself don't recomend it. Too many possibilities for things to go wrong. I've been doing this for over 50+ years and even though you can doesn't mean you should.
