Hogen Hi-shore? I hit my 10mm power limit when I used 135g Nosler JHP’s, Double Tap cases, CCI 350 LP MAGNUM primers and Alliant Power Pistol propellant. I worked this combination up to an average velocity of 1780 fps. At .1 grain above that, I was getting some primer flattening, so I backed down .1 which showed no signs of over pressure so I settled on that as my max 135g/Power Pistol load. Pretty stout stuff reaching the lower level of rifle power out of a 6” ported barrel in a Glock 20.
Accurate Arms AA 9 is a ball powder with a burning rate similar to 800 X. Much easier to work with. Flows like water through a powder measure. Give it a try, much easier to use than 800 X. During the recent powder and primer famine. I was forced to use 700 X, ( faster burning version of 800 X ) to load 9 mm & 45 ACP. It is a terrible flake shotgun powder. Trying to get accurate loads through a powder measure was impossible. They would vary as much, as plus/minus 3/4 of a grain. I don't understand why the loading manuals list handgun loads for flake shotgun powders such as 700 or 800 X. Running accurate loads through a powder measure is impossible. Each individual load has to be weighted on a scale to be accurate.
Yeah I think in this video I mentioned that I only hand weigh with 800x. If you look at the 800x numbers in reloading manuals they top out at around 30k psi well below max pressures. I think that's obviously a safety thing due to the fact that it dispenses so poorly. I don't have any AA-9 but I have some longshot I've been meaning to try which is a finer flake powder. think you overcharged this quite dramatically (relatively) using longshot as a substitute (they have nearly the same grainage ratio in loads according to hodgdon's site) yours was probably around 12-12.5 and looking at 55-60k psi. pretty wild, the strength of 40 super!
Not sure what 12-12.5 was referring too? Can you link to what you were looking at. It's hard to really determine pressure without equipment but looking at hodgdonreloading.com they list 9.8 gr of 800x at 30k psi with a 155gr xtp. My load was 10.8 gr. Max saami pressure in 37,500 psi. So not really sure if I'm hitting that or if I'm over but the cases are taking the pressure. If I continue to increase the powder load you should see the velocities drop slightly as the case starts to rupture and deform. Then if I don't notice that and keep going you'd see case failure. So since I'm not having too crazy of pressure signs I think I'm not to far past max pressure if not under it. Then again there's guys shooting 9mm major out of standard 9mms and nothing is blowing up and that's like 44k psi so who really knows.
