I've been making this very special cake for almost 20 years! I ALWAYS make the frosting first, to add the wonderful aroma to my house as I make the batter. This gives the frosting a chance to cool down. I make this cake by request from friends who brag about it. I am known as "German Chocolate Cake" Jeff. Yes I am proud of my work! You've done well also!

This was the exact recipe my Nana gave to my mom when she married my dad and said, "This is what he gets on his birthday." Cut to my birthday cakes years later and this is always what I wanted too. It's our "standard" birthday cake and always gets a "wow" from anyone who hasn't had it before. Thanks for sharing what has (felt like) a special secret baking recipe that I always wanted to share with the world.

I will try your recipe. I have loved this cake since I was a kid in the 1960s. My mother used to make it for my dad on his birthday and sometimes on Father's Day. Its the gooey coconut and almond filling I love the best. Sometimes my mother would frost the outside with a rich fudge like frosting. Roses deli in Portland, Oregon used to make a four layer cake at their restaurant. Now some other bakery makes it and its not as good. When I make my version I toast the coconut a bit to give it a different taste and texture.
While I was watching you stir in the pecans and coconut I remember a cookie from my childhood that I haven't had in a long time. Its called a no-bake chocolate cookie with coconut and peanut butter. They are easy to make. You start off with a lot of white sugar and a bit of water to make a sugar syrup and then you take the sugar syrup off the heat and add milk, peanut butter, coconut (or nuts) and spoon it on to wax paper. The key is work quickly so the cookies mixture doesn't firm up. The other important thing is that the sugar syrup needs to boil for exactly 1 minute so you don't have a granular taste to it and that the cookie will set up properly. My mother found the recipe in some magazine back in the 1950s. Give it a try!

I just made this for my husband and I have never liked German chocolate cake but THIS!? I fell in love. First off I used my cheaper cake pans ( because I had three of them) and I spooned the thick batter so that edges were rounded up and every layer came out perfect. Very much like red velvet cake! I was AMAZED!!! I only used one batch of frosting ( Wich was not as thick as yours) but came out WONDERFULLY. Had more than enough frosting! This cake! Took the CAKE! LOL😁🙏😁💜💜💜💜🧡🧡🧡🧡💜🥰I've told you before and I will tell you again, I come to you because you tell everything!!!! and so the recipe is dependable.

Because I'm teaching myself how to bake and him telling me everything is essential for me to learn and some videos I've watched don't explain their tricks and leave out steps.. I first found him when looking up how to make flat cakes! Which I tried out the tin foil and paper towel technique and it REALLY WORKS! and explaining why it works makes so much more sense now.. I just wish I could meet him in person and do a cake together so I can have first hand experience with a real pro!

I’m a baker and I spent an afternoon making this fabulous cake. It was so worth the time and effort. I used the strips for the first time and my layers sunk in the middle, but because I live in a high altitude, that sometimes happens. My mom said it was one of the best cakes she had ever had. Not the best German chocolate cake she ever had, but one of the BEST cakes she ever tasted. I left it on the counter in my cake dome and for the short time it stayed there, each slice was just as moist as the first day I made it. Delicious!!

Both of our favorite foods is german chocolate cake, its not just for dessert, we believe german chocolate cake is in a food group all by itself to be eaten any time of the day. We use his mothers frosting recipe, a lot like yours, but I have never made home made cake, which I am going to try to make yours. My husbands family like plain chocolate frosting all around the outside edge but that makes it to sweet to me. Thank You, Leslie

It's one of my most absolute favorite cakes in the World, however I'm certain that I've only had the 'American' version. John used Kirsche(?) and fresh cherries, whereas most "American" cakes I've had have used maraschino cherries and am doubtful about the cherry syrup. I'm now worried that I've been eating the wrong version of this cake 😂

I just baked this cake for my daughter's bday and it turned out delicious! The grocery only had semi-sweet baker's chocolate (56% cocoa) so that's what I used and the cake came out great with the perfect amount of sweetness, The cake had a light texture and not dense at all, with a nice light chocolate flavor unlike regular chocolate cake and wasn't overly sweet. The frosting is so tasty and compliments the cake perfectly. I made a simple, not too sweet chocolate buttercream to put on the sides of the cake because there wasn't enough coconut-pecan frosting. i would definitely rate this cake a solid 8/10. It's guaranteed to please everyone and passes the clean plate test! This cake was perfect with a nice hot cup of coffee!

A story of my experiences with GC cakes:
My mom used to make this and it was my younger brothers favorite. She made it 4 layers by making it in 2 pans and slicing each into 2 layers.
We always go on a sibling camping weekend for his birthday in September. I tried to make one for him in my RV oven. If you don’t know anything about RV ovens..what a treat 🤔 …the most inconsistent temperature and smallest propane oven ever. Plus you have to have the RV totally level, which is a trick in itself.
Second attempt was in my Breville oven (one pan at a time). Still a total flop. Now I live in a real house with a real stove with oven, but still use the Breville a lot. I will have to try this recipe and surprise him with it (if it turns out).
