I have a chocolate cake recipe that's incredibly similar to this, but you use buttermilk instead of milk. The coffee really does amp up the chocolate! I also add about a half a tablespoon of cinnamon to the dry ingredients for a little secret kick. I love to bake this as a bundt cake and then drizzle a super delicious and simple ganache over the top, then fill the center with fresh strawberries. It's my favorite treat to bring to my coworkers! That frosting looks so divine though -- I bet it would pipe beautiful rosettes on cupcakes.
@@alisonbakes6351 You should be able to! I'd nix the buttermilk in my variation and just stick with regular milk. John, this is the very cake, that my husband requests, for his birthday every year. I actually call it Bonnie’s Chocolate Cake, as my very good friend Bonnie gave it to me years ago. She found it in a magazine as an ad for a famous cocoa brand, that we all know😀. So I encourage your followers to make it as I know your version will be delicious 🤗.
Just in time for my husband's birthday, he loves chocolate cake. I just came across your page today and have watched 7 of them so far. I have saved every recipe. Can't wait to make this! Thank you!! 🎉
Thank you so much for explaining the reason for the ingredients. I love understanding the science behind how a combination of ingredients and heat results in such delicious outcomes!
My 10 year old grand daughter and I made this for her 6year old sisters birthday. This, and my carrot cake are the only decent cakes I've made from scratch in my whole life. Everyone who has tasted it has asked for more and the recipe. So easy and good. And I'm not really a chocolate fan, but this was impossible to resist.
I love watching you as you have an authentic style that makes a person feel they can be successful trying your recipes. I bought a scale and wow, the left over flour from the so-called 2 cups was a lot! Making this cake for my husband's birthday party. Can't wait for him to see and taste it. Thank you for all your expertise and humor.

I swear I just made his cake last week and I said the same thing. Definitely the best cake I have ever had and the only chocolate cake recipe I'll need
This is the ultimate chocolate cake recipe. It was so soft, it seriously is a beautiful cake. I added a little cinnamon, and allspice because I didn't want coffee in it. You are the best and easiest to follow. YOU ARE THE BEST!
This cake is perfect, I didn’t have time to make my usual recipe and this whipped up in minutes, baked in 25 mins and the birthday boy adored it, I made a sort of homage to a Black Forest with black cherry reduction and chantilly cream and it was gorgeous ❤❤❤❤
Baked this today and my family and I really enjoyed it! For us the cake was sweet enough so next time im thinking of omitting the frosting and topping it with stiff whipped cream😋
This is pretty much the recipe I use for chocolate cake but instead of whole milk, it uses buttermilk. And it is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had.
How does the cake taste between using whole vs buttermilk? Buttermilk is new to me and I don’t understand it’s role or what it does to a recipe that is different than whole milk
@@hivonathe buttermilk adds a nice tang to balance out the sweetness of the dessert and it reacts with the baking soda to give a nice fluffy rise. Also, if you don’t want to buy a quart of buttermilk if you only need it for one recipe you can make your own with whole milk and white vinegar.. for every one cup add one tablespoon of vinegar in a measuring cup and let it sit for a couple of minutes and then use it in your recipe 💁🏻♀️ happy baking!
@@Semapho0ore So the recipe I found was originally cupcakes but I doubled the amount to make enough batter for a cake. Here is the double amount, so just halve it for cupcakes: Cake: 2 cup flour 2 cup sugar 12 tbsp cocoa powder 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 2 egg 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup vegetable oil 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 cup hot water Chocolate Frosting: 1 1/4 cup unsalted room temp butter 12 oz of chocolate chips melted 3 tbsp cocoa powder 5 cups powder sugar Pinch of salt 4-5 tbsp of heavy whipping cream (but I tend to use a lot more other wise the frosting is super thick)
So I have tried baking several times with no success and recently did an awesome poundcake. So I saw this and love chocolate so decided to give it a try...absolutely amazing. Note: I only use 1 cup of sugar and reduced all the other ingredients for the frosting and it was perfect. I thought 6 cups was way too much. It came out perfect.
Made this the other week and my oh my. It's probably one of the best I've ever made. So good I'm going to bake one for my birthday next week. Thank you for an awesome recipe!
Only way I measure out the flour; I fluff it with a fork, and use the same fork to add to my measuring cup. Using a cup to get the flour messes up the consistency and it isn’t right. reminds me of the portillos chocolate cake. It s great but I do think that buttercream can be substituted with something else less heavy. Great work as usual love your videos !!
I just made this cake tonight and it’s the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made. It’s like devils food cake and it’s so good I could eat it without frosting. I made his German chocolate cake and it was the best I’ve made as well. All John’s recipes I make are absolutely delicious!
It was my first attempt at making a cake. I followed your recipe step by step, but the cake turned out excessively sweet. In the buttercream, the taste of powdered sugar was overwhelming. I'm not sure if people in America enjoy such overly sweet food, but it's too much for my taste. If I were to use, let's say, about 300g of powdered sugar, it would be much better. The same goes for biscuit. If I were to use half of suggested sugar I would love it! :)
Totally agree with this comment! Even though I have a sweet tooth! I struggled to finish one small portion. Now we don’t know what to do with the rest of the cake since no one of us is willing to eat it🙈
I made this cake on Wednesday the 7th of February and I’m loving this recipe , I used espresso powder and sour cream ❤️ truly the best cake I’ve ever made 🙌 Thank you ☺️ so much for giving us this wonderful recipe
@@lau6351 exactly. Mine didn't even rise, it became a super heavy dense brownie, or more like a fudge. I found a better recipe much easier and lighter. 6 eggs, 5 full tbsp flour, 1 full tbsp cocoa, 8 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp baking powder for a 26 cm pan. Whisk egg whites with half of the sugar until it looks like a shaving cream, slightly whisk egg yolks with the rest of the sugar until becomes pale yellow, fold egg yolk mixture into egg white foam, and then mix the sifted flour and cocoa into it by folding. Pour all at once, bake for 25-30 mins in a preheated oven at 180°C and then after cooling slice into 2 or 3 layers. Super light 3 layers of cake with only ~100 gr sugar
@@TarlanMustafayev1 three layer cake with 100 gr of sugar? Yeah, that’s not a cake Granted, 1100gr is a bit much, but we don’t have to go into the other extreme Even a banana would probably satisfy the sweet tooth better than that

This recipe makes a solid 36 cupcakes ❤ Using an ice cream scooper to keep the cupcakes even (about half full in the liners or a medium-largw scooper, the cupcakes rise up to the edge of the liner.) Keep in mind, cupcakes take less time. Our oven is old and runs hot, so 400°F for 15 minutes worked perfectly. 350°F will need probably 5-10 minutes longer. Just keep an eye on them. Ours turned out great. Thank you!! ❤🎉

I made a dark chocolate ganache instead of the buttercream frosting to make this less diabetes-inducing, and it turned out great! Thanks for another great recipe, John.
I'm convinced that you are the baking god , I made this and my family ate like half of it in one sitting
Literally had to unsub from this channel . Your recipes are just too good, and it's making everyone at home gain weight 😂😔
Agreed. Feels like I could die from diabetes anyday just by watching his videos alone.
😂😂😂
I tried all the recipes I came across from his channel😂
Lol
💀💀💀💀
I am busy making this right now for my birthday, it's almost 3am. I have made a lot of your previous recipes. They are all solid, delicious and easy. Thanks for making these videos. Couldn't have done it without you. ❤
John you spoil us with all the lovely content you put out. ❤
Okay, I made this cake,
AMAAAAZING DUDE!
FUDGE CRACKERS ITS BOMB
, I did a few slightly different things, I used unsweetened cocoa powder instead of flour , for my cake pans, and I prepped my cocoa powder with coffee.
Soo Bomb !
I love your manner of explaining the process, fun and detailed...🎉
Baking this cake for my husband's birthday next month. I know I can always count on your recipes! Always the best!
i followed ur recipe for my fathers birthday cake (he’s a chocolate lover) and my whole family loved it!! my dad said it reminded him of the cakes his mom made him growing up. thank you so much John!!! 💖💖 gonna be making more of your recipes for sure! super easy to follow 🥰
This recipe is the best i made this a few days ago and me and my friends ate the whole cake sifting the ingredients and the boiling water made it absolutely delicious and soft. Definitely making it again
Haven’t tried this recipe yet, but your Devil’s Food Chocolate Cake is THE BEST chocolate cake I have EVER had in my life! That recipe will forever be my go to for chocolate cake! ❤
I fine it was a bit dense
@@renatajoseph6399 it was like a brownie but tasted like a cake to me.
Thanks for letting us know ❤🎉
It was super fluffy and moist for me. Perhaps you added too much flour and made it dense?
I swear I just made his cake last week and I said the same thing. Definitely the best cake I have ever had and the only chocolate cake recipe I'll need
This is the ultimate chocolate cake recipe. It was so soft, it seriously is a beautiful cake. I added a little cinnamon, and allspice because I didn't want coffee in it. You are the best and easiest to follow. YOU ARE THE BEST!
My mouth was watering throughout this entire video. It looks amazing!
I love chocolate cake. I had chocolate cake for my youngest brother's 16th birthday today. Ever since he was a baby, he loved chocolate cake.
I'm so glad I have an older screenshot of your original Ultimate Chocolate Cake recipe. Which is my customers favorite 😍
Hi is there anything different between his original recipe and this one?
This cake is perfect, I didn’t have time to make my usual recipe and this whipped up in minutes, baked in 25 mins and the birthday boy adored it, I made a sort of homage to a Black Forest with black cherry reduction and chantilly cream and it was gorgeous ❤❤❤❤
I made this cake and it was awesome. I couldn't stop eating it. My husband loved as well.
thank you, I made it for my mom's birthday and she liked it. This was the first cake i have ever made. So again thank you.🙂
I made your chocolate cake this week, it was soo good! (I've made a lot of chocolate cakes in my time, this had made it to the top of my list).
Baked this today and my family and I really enjoyed it! For us the cake was sweet enough so next time im thinking of omitting the frosting and topping it with stiff whipped cream😋
OMGG ive been waiting for a chocolate cake recipe, THANK YOUUUU
Sameeeeee
I prepared this cake and it was the first time I succeeded in making a cake and presented it to my family and they liked it. I am very happy
This is pretty much the recipe I use for chocolate cake but instead of whole milk, it uses buttermilk. And it is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had.
How much of buttermilk do you use please?
Here is the double amount, so just halve it for cupcakes:
Cake:
2 cup flour
2 cup sugar
12 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 egg
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup hot water
Chocolate Frosting:
1 1/4 cup unsalted room temp butter
12 oz of chocolate chips melted
3 tbsp cocoa powder
5 cups powder sugar
Pinch of salt
4-5 tbsp of heavy whipping cream (but I tend to use a lot more other wise the frosting is super thick)
@@mayallyourbaconburn Thank you !
John I have tried most of your cakes and they turned out amazing!!thank you for sharing your amazing recipes ❤
th-cam.com/video/MZ7xQ04gOrE/w-d-xo.html
So I have tried baking several times with no success and recently did an awesome poundcake. So I saw this and love chocolate so decided to give it a try...absolutely amazing. Note: I only use 1 cup of sugar and reduced all the other ingredients for the frosting and it was perfect. I thought 6 cups was way too much. It came out perfect.
Who else watches most of his amazing recipes but still haven't try any yet?👀
Try one! They are delicious!
Made this the other week and my oh my. It's probably one of the best I've ever made. So good I'm going to bake one for my birthday next week. Thank you for an awesome recipe!
Thanks John - another great job - looks delicious
Only way I measure out the flour; I fluff it with a fork, and use the same fork to add to my measuring cup. Using a cup to get the flour messes up the consistency and it isn’t right.
Your channel is the only baking channel I watch; you explain clearly and don’t rush through the ingredients list and instructions. We also share a deep love for chocolate 😃
I love all your recipes! Can you do a dark chocolate orange cake next please! 🙌🏼😋
begging for this
Your love for gold on your kitchen utensils, the knobes including your apron! 🤣is amazing! I like the way you articulate everything and the humour ofcourse, easy to follow. The cake looks lovely, am venturing into a baking biz and this is so helpful and interesting. Thank you!
I just made it and it’s super delicious!!! Thank you so much for your recipe ❤❤❤❤
I already made this last year for my boss birthday because he loves chocolate, and he loved it. This year I will make this again. The sponge is really soft and moist. Thank you for sharing this lovely recipe! ❤❤❤
John, this really looks like a good recipe! It turned out beautifully ❤ Thanks so much for this and all of the other wonderful things that you share 😊
th-cam.com/video/XyMnm64ZYXg/w-d-xo.html
Made this for my husband’s birthday 2 days ago and every time he passes by the cake plate he cuts “just a small slice”. There is only 1/4 of it left🤣. He loved it! Thanks for another wonderful recipe 🥰
1kg of sugar in a single cake is absolutely INSANE.
2 cups
Right?
I’ve seen other recipes with 3 cups! 😳
400g is less than 1/2 kg tho
😂😂
Hes insane
Ummmmm!!! I just made this and 😮 🤯 this is better than any cake I’ve ever purchased from any store! I have to mark this day because I can’t make this cake but every like 3 to 4 weeks. 😩 this cake is TOO GOOD DRILL SERGEANT!!!!
reminds me of the portillos chocolate cake. It s great but I do think that buttercream can be substituted with something else less heavy. Great work as usual love your videos !!
it’s all the tiny details that I love, help a beginner understands what could go wrong or what is the best outcome for a cake ❤😊

Omg it looks amazing ❤ it’s definitely a must try

I just made this cake tonight and it’s the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made. It’s like devils food cake and it’s so good I could eat it without frosting. I made his German chocolate cake and it was the best I’ve made as well. All John’s recipes I make are absolutely delicious!
Thank you for sharing your love of food with all of us. By the way, this will be added to my Thanksgiving menu!!
This is the best chocolate cake in the world!
My family loves it! So moist! 🎉
Same here. Now I'm looking for other frostings to add in this cake.
Biscuit. Ha
Americans tend to like much sweeter desserts than other countries that’s the beauty of cooking if you like less sugar in your cake make it with less
Totally agree with this comment! Even though I have a sweet tooth! I struggled to finish one small portion. Now we don’t know what to do with the rest of the cake since no one of us is willing to eat it🙈
It was a fail for me also, too sweet
2023 and your still ❤‘ed for what you’re sharing with us. #decadent!!!
I always brace for a crash when he slides the scale across the island counter.
Same here every time he slides anything!
😂
I made this cake on Wednesday the 7th of February and I’m loving this recipe , I used espresso powder and sour cream ❤️ truly the best cake I’ve ever made 🙌 Thank you ☺️ so much for giving us this wonderful recipe
Great recipe but 1100 grams of sugar in a small cake sounds wrong 😱
It is indeed wrong! I did it and it was overly sweet! I can’t understand all the extremely good comments about this recipe.
Agree! I usually like the fudge texture, but I think with the chocolate buttercream it can be a little bit overwhelming
@@TarlanMustafayev1 three layer cake with 100 gr of sugar? Yeah, that’s not a cake
Granted, 1100gr is a bit much, but we don’t have to go into the other extreme
Even a banana would probably satisfy the sweet tooth better than that
Lol! He said 2cups (400g) of sugar, not 1100g😅
Watched this video with my 6 year old daughter. She has ordered me to make this cake for her tomorrow.🤪. I am going to try..
Disclaimer:(honest review) i tried to make this cake and it turned out really bad i dont like its texuture pinn me so that everyone can know how u are scamming😢😢😢
Yes I also tried it but it turn out so bad fr plz don’t make this cake 😢
Fr I also tried 😢and my whole hard work 😓 wasted😢😢😢😢😢
I smell b.s.
I baked the chocolate cake sponge now. It's 0048 here in India.
Just loved the sponge itself.
It's so moist.
Will update when I make it on a whole according to your recipe.
This recipe makes a solid 36 cupcakes ❤ Using an ice cream scooper to keep the cupcakes even (about half full in the liners or a medium-largw scooper, the cupcakes rise up to the edge of the liner.)
Keep in mind, cupcakes take less time. Our oven is old and runs hot, so 400°F for 15 minutes worked perfectly. 350°F will need probably 5-10 minutes longer. Just keep an eye on them. Ours turned out great. Thank you!! ❤🎉
Salt....people underestimate how important it is. It makes the flavor pop...I love your videos!
ive made this three times so far this year for friends and family, its so perfect, thanks John!
I did last week for my son's birthday and it was my first cake. Everyone loved it! Thank you for the recipe
