- Having taught multiple students how to decorate cakes with buttercream, I've picked up on the most common mistakes people tend to make. Cake decorating IS HARD but this tutorial may point out where you may be going wrong! From holding your palette knife or scraper slightly differently, to the pressure you apple to the cake, hopefully this video will help you tackle those annoying air bubbles and uneven surfaces.
Enjoy! x

You have taught an old dog new tricks! I've been decorating cakes for 35 years with much frustration and taking a lot of time. Thank you for sharing these techniques with us!!
So happy to hear this!! You're so welcome!🥰
@@GeorgiasCakes Hello!! Georgia wish to have a talk with you please. How can i joint you??
Thanks a lot
Thank you for the explanation, I love to watch a good teacher. Thank you
Great video... great explanation of each and every scenario on how things can go bad and how to fix issues. BEST step by step video tutorial I've seen by far!!!!
Cannot thank you enough. I've been making every single one of the mistakes for more years than you've been alive. Can't wait to work on another cake with this tutorial right beside me on my tablet.
So glad you found this helpful! Good luck with your next cake!
Waoh...very helpful...been making those mistakes oftenly....thanks for the explanation..
I love that she demonstrates the WRONG way to do something, the results thereof, then the RIGHT way. So many videos just show the right method. Just discovered her channel (subscribed, of course) Will be binge-watching for a while.
sidebar (totally unrelated): her Aussie accent helps...LOL
I completely agree! She demonstrates everything so clearly. I now feel inspired to bake 🍰
100%
Aussie? Isn't that an English accent..?
What Aussie accent ? She’s English. 😂
@@hellcat58563 I was thinking the same thing, and she's not even in Australia
I just had to subscribe because you are so helpful and so clear. I am 83 and I'm just starting this as a hobby. I used to do a little bit of it when I was younger and I have all my mother's cake decorating equipment. A grandchild just asked me to make their wedding cake. Wish me luck. But with your videos I don't need as much luck just knowledge. And you have it for sure. ♥️♥️♥️
What an honor and the best of luck.
Wow amazing at 83 😍
I've never seen anyone explaining it so well, with so much detail. So useful. Thank you so much!
Very true
Yes.
Agree❤
I was thinking the same thing.
Have watched tons for frosting a cake, but NO other videos been this helpful!!! Literally the best practical video on this topic!!! ❤❤
You are so welcome! Thank you!!
I loved this video. Showing in detail what is actually wrong explains even to experienced bakers why sometimes it suddenly doesn't work. Great tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
This is the best video I’ve seen on how to decorate the cake. And the only one I’ve seen that slows down to explain and show the details where there are issues in my current technique. Thank you!
This is the best online tutorial I have ever watched my entire life
Thank you love ❤ you a life saver!
I love how she explains the wrong way and the right way to decorate thanks ❤
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.. This tutorial is completely a game changer.. These simple tips have elevated my cake game.. The most useful tip for me was holding the bench scraper at the bottom and the way you applied the buttercream for the initial coating.. My cake ALWAYS comes out with the top being narrow and the bottom is wider and I can usually cover it with decorations, BUT now I just did a cake using these techniques and it’s a game changer.. Again Thank You and many blessings 🙏🏾❤️
You're so welcome!!
Thank you so much. Be blessed 🎉❤
Holding the smoother at the bottom is a total game changer! Trying it out on my birthday cake next month. It's so obvious now you've said it, thank you.
This video has reignited my interest in cakes! I was always disappointed with the end result but your video has given me confidence that i can make something so beautiful too!
You and me both ☺️☺️
I hqve been making beautiful and HUGE butter cream tier cakes for years. I would give anything to have watched this video first. You made this a simple and easy process and everything just made sense. You showing us what not to do was priceless. We see how others do it and make decisions. Their technique versus ours. Now you said this is why it has to be. The bad choices were removed from the turn table. Thank You, from Florida.
This is the most helpful icing cake video i have seen my entire life…
Wish me luck tomorrow..😊
Really thank you, you didn't skip anything. You explained it in a precise and enjoyable way and you clarified all the mistakes. This is the first time I've seen a video that is this precise and useful. ❤️
What a great teacher! Brilliant help for someone who is used to covering with sugarpaste.
Glad it was helpful!
She is amazing!!! I already watched so many videos about that and none of them explained it that well!!!! 😊
This video is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. You’re an amazing teacher. I’ve seen so many things I’ve been doing wrong that frustrate me when frosting cakes
Why am I just finding this now? I have been making everything she says NOT to do😂 thank you so much for explaining this so well and thoroughly!
Omg!!! You are such a good teacher! I am a “mom wanna be baker” on my free time and make cakes for my daughter’s birthdays and sometimes for her friends, as a gift… just want a bit of challenge on the cake designs, so you video is a super helpful lesson! Thank you ❤
I must say I appreciate you taking your time to explain in detail what not to do and what happens when we do it the wrong way ☺️
Instantly subscribed! You explained it better than my teacher! I'll keep in mind all the tips! Bless you more!❤️
Her crumb coat is better than my final coat 😂
My thoughts 😂
Mine too! lol
😂😂😂 you'll get there 🫶🏽
Girl you’re amazing! Never seen anyone explain this well ❤
First time someone show in detail decorating process
Your hands are blessed and knowledgeable inside . Almost everything you corrected here is what I used to do. Thanks alot
watching your videos put a smile on my face 😊. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much, simple thing but game changer for me… holding the SMOOTHER at the bottom. Why haven’t I done that before. I always feel like I have scraped it off and had to put it back on in the past as my cake has shown through.
Loads of great tips thank you again 🎉
The only baking channel I have subscribed to. You just got one additional friend from Zimbabwe
Thank you so much!
You are an excellent teacher, such a good way of correcting mistakes 👌👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You have pre-emptively saved my daughter's first birthday cake. Thank you!
I have done every one of the don'ts and had all of the problems you have shown. Finally answers to all of my errors. I will practice and try to put on my buttercream with out my usual errors. I cannot thank you enough.
So happy to hear!
Thank you dear
Thank you so much
This is all of my mistakes in one video. I pray this helps me get better
I've been making high end cakes for 60 years, since the days when celebration cakes were always rich fruit, marzipan and royal icing, right through to the present day's modern cakes, and still making, and you are an excellent teacher!😊 Well done.❤
So many tips! I knew most of them. Holding the scraper on the bottom was something I didn't know! Gonna try it next time I bake a cake.
Thank you, thank you!! Ive been doing cakes casually for a few years and I've always struggled with the outer layer of smoothing buttercream. To the point of tears lol
I'm a visual leaner as well, so to show me how I'm doing it wrong and how to right it goes a long way with me.
I have 2 cakes this week that I'll be practicing these tricks on!! ❤
I’m crying inside. Thank youuuuuu.
Hey ma'am, thanks a bunch for these tips and tricks.I were struggling to make my cakes perfect by taking more and more time. But now you made it so simple for me.I will definitely use these tips on my next cake...Thanks a lot..❤❤❤❤❤❤
Very helpful, thanks! I had a couple of, "Aha! That's what I'm doing wrong!" moments. 😄
Glad it was helpful!
same. lol
Thank you so much for this video🥹.I loved this video very much🫶🏻.This video was very helpful for me.☺️I tried it seeing your video and i am satisfied with the result💙💙
Thank you so much. I really needed this. Very helpful tutorial. Definitely going to watch it over and over again
I'm glad I came across this video.. I'm doing my first cake decorations and I had no idea how to do it..
WOOW GIRL YOU EXPLAINED IT TO EVERY DETAIL. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. I HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH BABY ALREDAY ...MAY GOD ALWAYS PROTECT YOU BOTH
Thank you Georgia for this super informative video! Also, love your pregnancy glow! ❤
This is just fabulous! I’ve been doing everything you’ve mentioned that we are not supposed to do. And now I understand where am going wrong. This is truly a masterclass. I can’t thank you enough!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EXPLAINING SO WELL ❤
I came across this video few minutes ago and I must say you are a great teacher gifted I must say. Very detailed, very precise and I liked that you also show how to correct it. I've made all the mistakes shown, thank you for sharing your experience I'm confident I will be able to rectify mine.❤
Great video, super informative! Can you tell me, how do you get the top completely smooth again after you've straightened the edges? If I'm bringing the buttercream in to the middle, it ends up leaving small little lines where it's been dragged in. Appreciate your help!
There will always be little lines because we’re only human…! It does come down to practise and the angle of the palette knife but even my cakes leave a few marks. Usually the decorating on the cake hides it
Thanks lady for your tips and your information ❤
Thank u so much for your tips dear❤S.A
Thank you! I tried your tips and they work. It saved me so much time and energy 😂😂😂
Thank you so much .I like you to teach me how to mount a cake and also crumb coat
Thank you! Other people just tell you how to do it, and they do it so effortlessly, so when i try, it doesn't work. But this video explains so much of why things go wrong and how to actually do it right. Great video!
😱 I was doing everything wrong ,thank you so much for a very informative video
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much. I have avoided working with buttercream for so long but you have given me the confidence to try.
Thanks i have been struggling with this
This video was meant for me. Ive seen another video from you that's helpful..it was about piping. Was about to lay down for the night but decided to find a video on smoothing buttercream and saw your video. This one is definitely what I needed to see. Thank you soo much for showing me my mistakes..Keeping posting...I will definitely be watching..
Please can we get more "what not to do" videos?😄
😅😅😅
Im just into the baking and learned so much with this video! Thanks so mucho for your kindness and time! New follower 🩷
No matter how much I try. There are always bubbles in my buttercream
add a tablespoon of hot water to the buttercream. Get a metal scraper and warm it up and use it warm when scraping the cake x
Try blending it in a food processor
Have you seeing the videos from preppy kitchen?? There are plenty of videos that help with this specific issue!!
Me too
If you take a tablespoon of the buttercream and warm it for 30 seconds in the microwave, then mixing back into the rest of the buttercream, it helps a lot
Was so skeptical when it comes to smoothening out the butter cream
This video has taught me a lot.
Thank you.
Did anyone else notice that she’s pregnant
Just noticed after reading your comment 😅
Same here 😂
Only after I went back watching the video again to hear something she said ..did I notice it then saw your comment
Think it's rude to comment on something like that
We were busy focusing on the teaching...
I just found your channel. Brilliant!! I LOVE the way you describe and show the best techniques for decorating. Thank you sooo much!
I no longer bake & decorate cakes, however, I eat enough of them to see what some decorators need to learn. They are running cakes not knowing the correct way to do it. You are an excellent instructor. And I just wish that these same decorators learn to do something different when it comes to piping their tips.
I’m a pottery teacher and I’m going to start demonstrating like you. It’s very difficult for me to mess up my pot because it’s such a pain to fix it. I’ve never frosted a cake like this so it’s great to see the beginner way to not do it and the bad result that comes for with. PS baking my son’s wedding cake today.
This is literally the best cake frosting video I've ever watched. Thank you so much. Definitely following this channel
What a wonderful teacher ❤❤🎉🎉
thank you so much🤍 i'm about to make my very first professional cake, and all your pointers really helped me out! hopefully it goes well🤞🏻
Thank you! You covered all the high points and solved a few bothersome problems I've had - I so appreciate you not trying to make your video longer or more clever by filling it up with nonsense! You are a marvelous teacher - Subscribed!
Thank you so much! Been doing cakes as hobby baker for 40 years, but this was perhaps the most informative video on smoothing buttercream. Thank you!
For some reason, it's taken me a while to specifically look into how to make cakes. I started baking both from boxes & scratch at 7 & that was almost 21 years ago now. I think about 3 years ago I finally decided to look a little more into how to actually do it (learning about the crumb layer was such a cake changer). I learned a lot from this video, I think seeing the wrong way to do things can be really helpful.
I was actually looking into how to work with fondant when this video was suggested, so I wasn't expecting to learn about how to frost a cake. I'm definitely going to be looking at your other videos.
This was the best tutorial I’ve watched and I’ve watched so many but this one actually taught me
Loved that video! I always have problems because of the weather (August it's hot here) and when I have one part ok, the other part is a mess. I always start by the sides!!! 😮 I will try all of these tips. Thanks!!! ❤
Amazing video! When someone is proficient in something it’s often hard to remember the trouble spots when first learning. This video will be sooooo helpful next time I make a cake.
I love this. I can always improve my skills. Learned so much. Thank you.
You are amazing. The tips you gave in this video not to do that way are so important and no one else did that. Thanks heaps.
Thank you so much! I am a self taught baker and have never quite been able to get sharp edges. Didn't realise before that I was making these mistakes.
An absolutely brilliant explanation. Doing a birthday cake for Thursday and hope to get a great result. The baking side is so easy compared to the icing side!
This was so fun and therapeutic to watch! Thanks for going through these steps and sacrificing a cake for it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, you are SO good at this - A LOT of practice I guess.
It just seems so effortless when you fix all these mistakes - it is a wonder to watch...thank you
I was so frustrated last week as I tried to decorate my first cake. It was not good. Everything you showed in the video of what not to do- is exactly what I did. Going to make my son a cake today and try again! Thanks❤️
I love that she gets straight to the demonstrations. Thank you!
I'm new here. Thank you so much for these tips, I'm a new baker and I've been making these mistakes for some months now. I'm so grateful i found your channel. Love from Nigeria ❤
Wow! I've learned so much in no time. Thanks so much my darling!
This is the best detailed explanation I've ever seen ❤ thanks for taking your time 🙏🥰💯
Wooow I rarely listen to explanations cause most of people repeat themselves thus taking alot of time to deliver but you woow you explain so simple and easy to understand,,,just found your channel,I had to subscribe
Thank you so much for this. Such a clear demonstration. 👍
I absolutely love the way that you explain and demonstrate things. This video has been really helpful. Thank you.
I’ve been struggling with the perfect finish for years, thanks so much for taking us through this!
I'm so glad I got to watch your vid its so detailed and you also showed the wrong way to do it and how to avoid it. It'll really help me for making my first cake. You're such a great teacher thank you sm❤ (new sub😊)

Beautiful cake! Você tem mãos abençoadas❤

I have a cake to make this week and so hope I can put your instructions into use! Love your you tubes.Thank you x
This is so useful ...very detailed,I'm watching from Nigeria ❤
This was so helpful! I can’t wait to try it! What do you do when the top isn’t completely smooth after your last step of cleaning the edges and bringing them into the center?
I just finished making one cake as a complete beginner and I did okay but now I want to go make another one because your tips make so much sense. Thank you
That's great! Thank you!!
Thankyou for this, best I've seen yet ❤
Beautiful ❤
This video is so helpful ❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Brilliant! I have never piped the sides before. I can see now how it makes so much sense.
Wow you are amazing this is what am looking for a perfect teacher like you in decorating
