My favorite character was... Rob ‘n’ Laura. They were so perfect together that it’s hard to imagine one without the other. They were like two halves of one person.

When Mary (Laura) said to Alan Brady "Well there may be some needy bald people", Reiner's reaction was not part of the script. He couldn't hold back his laughter. I would argue that Mary's "Needy Bald People" line is one of the funniest lines in television history.

I truly loved Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore whose chemistry was obvious. Plus, I enjoyed Rose Marie as Sally and Morty as Buddy and Richard Deacon. I didn't get to watch this show because I was still in high school plus working part time to have money to save and help my parents. I love the old business people because I use to watch old movies and seen a lot of them before in 30s, 40s and 50s.

Sometimes just the simplest gag setups about really "nothing" (way before Seinfeld) were classic gems every time you watch them again! One in particular was when Mel was being heckled by Buddy (again) and a stern voice started the bit: "Rob!" "Buddy!" "Sally!" "MEL!!" joke!

Jerry Paris who played Jerry Helper served in World War 2. Dick Van Dyke was in WW 2 as well. Most of his work on "the Dicke Van Dyke show" was behind the camera.
He directed the show and later directed some episodes of the "Mary Tyler Moore" show. He directed "Happy Days" and "the Partridge Family." He was married once, for 36 years.
He died of a brain tumor at age 60.

I can't seriously choose between Laura or Rob. The parts were equally written well, and the actors portrayed the characters with such finesse. Buddy and Sally however, seemed to steal the show with their one liners. I loved the comebacks and quips they would spit out. To me, the office scenes were the best, or even when they came over to the Petris' home to have a party.
The Dick Van Dyke show was groundbreaking in so many ways. Sally had a very important role as an equal worker, Laura was dressing in a daring way with her pants, which I commented on another video that she was one of the first to do that, but forgot that Lucille Ball had done that on her show. The whole show worked because the actors were at their best, and Carl Reiner was a great writer. (Which is odd that HE was the writer on a show that Van Dyke starred in! What kind of a twist is that!)
There will never be a show like the Dick Van Dyke show. It showed things that we hadn't seen in other shows. There were arguments portrayed between husband and wife unlike some other shows where a marriage was all hunky dory. I will continue to watch this show as long as it is around to view. It's one of my favorites among any sitcom that has ever been produced!

Funny behind the scenes photo that never got published....... My grandfather was a staff photographer for TV guide. Often he was sent with a staff writer to spend a few days on set of what would be the front page, and story of a TV show for the weekly publication. One of his assignments, I believe in the first season, the theme that week was a dream sequence where Dick and Mary imagine married life of years past when men dominated as King of his house hold, the wife the powerless wife of service. In a scene of the dream, Dick comes home, sits in his chair, with Mary by his side doing everything to comfort his, ready to serve his every need. Dick pulls out a long cigar snaps his fingers and Mary the obedient wife take the cigar to her mouth and lights it for him, while showing a face of displeasure.
The director yelled cut, apparently a lighting issue needed to to be corrected and the cast was given 5 min. break. Mary still holding the cigar went to her studio chair and playfully puffed the cigar, The photographer again my grandfather who was given permission to take pictures as long as it didn't interfere with production started taking photos of Mary who had fun mugging for the camera. In those days Mary T. Moore was a cigarette smoker and admitted she enjoyed cigars from time to time, a big NO, NO for women in those day. Any way as per the agreement all photos taken on the studio set had to be approved by the TV show publicity department for use by TV guide. I guess all hell broke loose both for Mary to even pose with the cigar, and to the photographer for taking these photos. Needless to say the cigar photos never made the magazine, and very few people saw the photos, me being one of them years later in grand pa's private collection.

It’s incorrect that Dick Van Dyke paid to be in Mary Poppins. He was cast as Bert already but, asked Walt Disney if he could play the old banker.
Disney made him do a screen test and pay $4000. I’ve seen conflicting accounts of where the $4000 ended up. Some say it was donated to a charity.
Also, enough ragging on him for the accent!
    It’s been almost 60 years.
    Get over it!!
Plus, he killed it as Bert!
