Speaking as a former Disney artist, they don't hire any of the original talent that created these classic flicks.
They tend to hire their " woke" twitter pals.

For years now, my non-white friends have been saying that they don't care for representation if it means taking well-known and beloved characters and suddenly making them black; what they would much, much prefer, are NEW characters who happen to be black, brown and are simultaneously well-developed, rounded and interesting characters you get invested in. Anything else feels like tokenism or like it might actually result in a backlash, because people will be sick of race-swapping for its own sake. This is what my black and Asian friends and colleagues have been saying for years - so I sometimes wonder who all this race-swapping is actually for.

It's for Disney to pat themselves on the back and they get to satisfy a certain population that does care. And its usually the twitter crowd. Worst is that Marvel already had gay original characters in their comic books they just dont use them. Instead they like easily editable "representation", because they have to satisfy China by removing them. Disney is all about the money and they may as well stop pretending they care about social issues. They're just riding these trends until they need to change to something else.

I was a Disney fan from the late 80s until very recently. I feel that their moves have become too predictable and boring, even the ones that aren't remakes. On the other hand, I'm beginning to enjoy movies from other studios such as Dreamworks (which I thought it would be inconceivable). It seems to me that Disney entered another dark age like it did in the 70s and 80s. Hopefully Disney will learn from these recent mistakes and bring about a new Disney renaissance like it did in the early 90s.

It's much more progressive as far as gender roles go than all the woke idiots today. I think with movies like Encanto, it shows that there are good movies still being made, even if they aren't as financially successful as other projects, but with the way Disney is going, I just want them to go back to making more original animated movies. If they focused less on making a quick dollar and more on creating new stories that do fit into these diverse roles, then they could have their cake and eat it too.

When you were talking about manly men being “toxic” in these movies and the emotional man being praised, it made me think of a John Wayne movie. As we know, you can’t get more manly than John Wayne, right? So there’s a scene where he wants to take revenge on a group of men who have kidnapped his nieces and raped and murdered one of them, but his traveling companion stops him, though they get into a huge fistfight. What’s really interesting about that scene is that you see the emotion in Wayne’s character - he’s clearly heartbroken about how these girls have been abused by other men, and while this emotion comes out in this urge to avenge them, he’s feeling great sorrow and righteous anger.

John McClane in the Die Hard films always gets upset when innocent people are killed. He beat himself up when Mr. Takagi was shot, he broke down when that plane crashed, he asked for help when he knew a bomb was in a school, he got mad when one of his coworkers was killed, and he got really mad when the cyber terrorists shut down all the power.

The funny thing about them race swapping the fairy (why 90% of the race swap are women?) is that they did it for "representing and inclusivity", but they also removed her other scenes from the original movie so the fairy appears only in one scene
it's like in the littler mermaid they race swapped Airel to a black mermaid, but they also race-swapped Carlotta, the maid. a black woman is the servent of a white guy. this is so progressive from Disney (the second time a white maid was race swapped to be a black maid of a white prince)

It's quite the shame. They can clearly make a great story that represents the culture of the country that it takes place in quite well (Lion King, Princess and the Frog, Lilo and Stitch, Vaiana) but instead they just choose to make the sexuality and skin colour of their main characters a priority. Characters like Mulan or Tiana were done well in this regard because the story focuses more on their characters and the fact that just like everyone else they have struggles and problems too.

Hans as a villain confused me tbh because it came out of nowhere. I wish they had kept the original idea of making Elsa the villain because it makes more sense contextually. Elsa was shut away and taught to bottle up her emotions while Anna got to run free. Maybe Elsa was mad at her parents for treating her differently and caused the storm which killed them and then set off on a years long plan to kill Anna and place the kingdom in an eternal winter to push back on the fearful citizens. Let it go is a good song but that’s pretty much the only thing that makes Elsa palatable. Otherwise she’s a bad sister, an irresponsible ruler, and an example of what not to do when your emotions get the best of you. Elsa acted pretty selfishly in both movies and never even tried to talk to her sister or take responsibility as queen. Their parents kind of sucked but that didn’t mean Elsa had to be. Elsa is pretty much the dress, the hair, the song, and that’s it. Hans had no logical motivation because he could’ve just kissed Anna and saved summer and became prince of Arendelle.

What's really funny about that, is in the original tale that Frozen was inspired by...she actually is the villain well sort of. She's not so much a villian as she's more a malevolent force. The main heroine, yes you heard me right heroine! Saves her bel9ved, not by killing the evil queen, but by showing him the power of her love. That she through all of her struggles uses what she's endured and shows him, she literally thaws his cold heart with the depth of love.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of my all-time favorites as well. It was so experimental and risky for a company like Disney because of its dark themes but it’s also very beautiful and has a moral that leaves enough room for the viewer to sit and ponder it. “What makes a monster and what makes a man?” After all, Frollo is a villain who is fully convinced that he’s doing what’s best for Paris without realizing until it’s too late that he’s only doing what’s in his interest only while Quasimodo’s actions are more thoughtful and empathetic compared to his adopted father. I’ll tolerate the gargoyles any day to watch that movie all the way through. As a 'feminine' man, thank you for speaking about how black and white media's takes on masculinity are. I work as a therapist but I also love camping and the outdoors. Masculinity, confidence, taking a leadership role, and other masculine traits (especially physical ones) are not bad. Anything dont to excess is bad, we just need a good cast and story to highlight where that line might be in masculinity without needing a purely feminine man as a foil, just a well-adjusted masculine male.
Also I fucking love Claude Frollo, especially Hellfire. Ive explored other languages of Hellfire and the heavy-handed emotional deliveries are amazing.
Edit: I think a great example of a well-adjusted masculine man is George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life. Takes charge, provides for and loves his family, is a hero, but struggles with things he cant control. Doesn't take it out on other people as a character trait though. As you can probably guess by my username, my most favourite Disney movie is The Great Mouse Detective. It came out at a very interesting time for the Disney studio: not quite before the "Renaissance" era (between this movie and The Little Mermaid was Oliver and Company) but also right after the disasterous failure that was The Black Cauldron. Even if it's just a retelling of the Sherlock Holmes story, but with little critters like mice, rats and what not, it's still a very great movie with wonderful characters, score and animation! It saved the studio after its last financial flop, and I find it sad that many people write this movie off as a product of Disney's last stages of its "Dark era". Still, it's so, SO much better than what Disney does today. God I can't imagine a remake of TGMD with realistic-looking rodents! Yuck!

My favorite Disney movie is Tangled and I think it's actually the LAST "classic" movie Disney has made: it has a well-written story and well-written characters (the characters' personal journeys are incorporated into the plot without overshadowing it), it has a real/truly evil villain, a main female character who's both feminine and strong, no feminism, no random POCs in a medieval-fantasy European setting, and the "prince" saves the princess/true (romantic) love saves the day at the end!

Interestingly, Avatar 2 (owned by Disney), had a scene where Jake had to apologize for his wife acting up in front of the (male) chief. He also exhibited a lot of masculinity and traditional values, particularly around raising his family right and honoring the tribe's religion and practices. He was a leader, loving father, and a man of some station. I was honestly waiting for some articles to drop about how "problematic" he was.

It’s good to see someone who still enjoys Disney but is still willing to call out or critique the bad parts of it. I am actually a fan of Twisted Wonderland, and for those who don’t know is a Japanese mobile game where they make new (mainly male) characters based off of the Disney villains. It’s kind of an obscure part of Disney, and not everyone will like the premise, but for me it’s honestly so good that I would argue that it’s one of the best things to come out of recent Disney and it’s not even from the U.S.
Otherwise though, I think most of the other things to come out of Disney are just mediocre to bad, and I never liked the turn they tried going on to try making everything politically correct or doing what is trending rather than making endearing stories. Does Disney deserve to be sorely criticized or even boycotted, yes, at least enough for an acknowledgment that this is current method needs to be changed or adjusted. However, I wouldn’t go as far as to say Disney deserves to grow bankrupt as despite its very controversial it’s business practices has been, they are still responsible for creating other characters and series that are still admired by many people, including myself, and wouldn’t want them taken away from them so soon or abruptly. I just want them to stop the current crap they are pulling off.

This nonsense has done much more harm than good to Disney it seems, especially last year. I thought the live-action Little Mermaid would be the most woke thing Disney could pump out (though to me, it wasn’t as bad as their Peter Pan or Mulan “remakes”), but I was surprised when I found that Snow White would be worse, with Disney not only checking boxes for diversity, equity, and inclusion, but also for hiring someone just because she was woke and she could sing. She literally hates the original Snow White and wanted to “feminize” it as much as possible. Then you have The Marvels, and… wow. The presence of cats was the only thing really good about it. The rest of it was just a woke mess.
And by the way, I ranked all animated Disney films I’ve seen up to Wish on a tier list site, and I have determined that The Lion King is currently my favorite Disney film, followed by Bambi and Fantasia. I also really enjoyed the original Little Mermaid, Encanto (the only great film Disney has made since 2020), Zootopia, Frozen 1, Beauty and the Beast (the original), The Jungle Book (also the original), Dumbo (still the original), Moana, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (the two that Disney is desperate to butcher next). I thought most of the live-action remakes were fine, especially pre-Mulan, but The Jungle Book is the only one that ever wowed me, though I will say that the Alice in Wonderland remake was also excellent.
Thank you for highlighting the horrors of modern Disney. I was worried for them since 2017, and it’s sadly worse than I thought it would be.

I've been reading a book series about a group of retired military men who take on mercenary contracts -- it's time-killing reading, nothing earth-shaking but enjoyable. But the men deal with loss (three original characters are dead, a fourth permanently disabled as a result of their missions), with the stress and uncertainty of what they're doing (they're hired by the government, but strictly "unofficially"), one character's wife just had a baby, and another's adult son just joined the group. There's more REAL emotion and vulnerability in these characters in popcorn books than in most recent Disney movies.

My favorite movie is Lilo and Stitch because of the great story telling. I also adored the Hawaiian music and dancing as a kid and still do. I think Lilo and Stitch also did a great job at representing woman with another figure besides skinny at the time. Nani looked like a healthy normal woman. I also think they handled showing the appreciation of the Hawaiian culture by actually including a dance that was made along with the actual language.
Disney stopped taking risks and became dull pretty quick. I get that they wanted to also jump in the wagon of bringing nostalgia and remaking movies especially during the pandemic, in order to get more views. I just hate that they continue and continue to just remake a movie too many times. The only remake I liked was Maleficent the first movie. Trying to be inclusive is starting to be annoying because instead of focusing on a character and growth they are now focusing on if this character will come out or not. Your race, gender, and sexuality is not your whole identity. I wish more people could understand that and get an actual hobby and work on self growth.

(I attribute the miracle of Encanto to the people behind it not Disney. Still holding out hope for Dreamworks.) Fortunately, Disney is loosing money hand over fist, & will no doubt soon perish. What’s sad is that it’s going to do so a shell of its former self.

Del Torro is not American, that's why his Pinocchio is better.
Same reason was Capcom produces better games, and manga better comics.
    US decadence.

I loved the Del Toro Pinocchio. They didn't play it as safe as Disney did. I also have more fun with Pokemon and other Japanese stuff because Japan is mostly old-fashioned with certain things and there's hardly any woke shit there and that's why I love Japan and respect them more than my own country America.

The Italian 2019 Pinocchio was really good,I never knew the original story was so dark. I also saw the 40's classic, the animation was wonderful!

What really bothers me is how all the classic Disney movies get a disclaimer at the start saying how they apologize for the stereotypes.

Tangled and Moana were the last good Disney animated movies and the last good Pixar film was Inside Out.

I watched Lightyear because I love the Toy Story movies. I was very disappointed to find it seemed to just be a movie designed to shove a message down my throat. The gay-couple kiss scene, for example. Ok, cool.. but what did it contribute to the story? It was a scene that seemed to only be put in the movie so they could check a box on their inclusion checklist but contributed nothing to the story.

I guess Cruella and Maleficent were greatly done showing the other side of villainhood giving more thought to every sides of a story, not a protagonist who seems perfect but I feel they will not make any such kind of movie.

I actually watched Cruella. It was way better than I thought. It also let you understand how Cruella went from being a decent person to slowly becoming the thing she hated when she was younger.

@@icedriver2207 yes exactly, that was even not expected even fashion was at the next level and looked good than what we just see these days, classic That movie let us think why the villains we thought were bad once and why are who they are. People can make them turn worst and the new woke culture is doing nothing else I feel, I went off the map but tho.

In defense of Strange World, the gay relationship was introduced in the movie very subtle. The main plot was the estranged relationship between the father and son. The movie is not bad, just generic.

You should check out Everything Everywhere all at once.
That movie has a lesbian character.
    However, it’s done WELL!
It’s not just to mark off a checkbox.
Having diversity is fine, but STORY ALWAYS comes first.

Didn’t they already do a live action hunchback back in the 90s with Salma Hayek as Esmeralda?

I've watched Lightyear, and I'd say I was satisfied. I didn't find it as woke-heavy as many other of their movies, and I think the plot was enjoyable.
But Toy Story 3 will probably still be one of my favourite Disney movies.

I have hope for the Hunchback live action. I’ll be so sad if they mess it up. I heard rumors they were gonna cast a non Romani woman for Esmeralda🙁
