Disney hasn't been where creativity happens for at least a generation. If you look at it, every success they've had in terms of producing successful entertainment content has been a result of an aquisition, and happens to be the thing that came out before Disney inevitably squeezed it until it died.

Agreed, Disney arguably didn't create successful entertainment content over the past few years - they've acquired highly acclaimed companies like Lucasfilm and Marvel, and been able to package them into something deeper and more evolved than what had come before. As long as they continue filling their stable with high calibre, innovative entertainment content, they'll be fine. Awn7mFktpB4

The budget for Everything Everywhere All At Once was only $25M, yet it was an Oscar winning masterpiece. There wasn't a crazy amount of CGI in that movie because a lot of the scenes were done with practical effects, which can make it feel more authentic and genuine.

The "practical effects make it feel more authentic and genuine" thing is bullshit. You just need to look at a bunch of old movies at the height of the practical effects era to see it's not true. It only seems this way because audiences literally never notice the good cgi (and sometimes studios outright lie about nit using cgi).
The reason EEAAO managed so much on such a relatively small budget is because they were smart about it, picking the best tool for the job and tying some effects that would otherwise be pretty lame into the story and so elevating them (see: when a guy's head blows up into a confetti. In isolation it's a pretty lame effect. In the movie it's awesome because it shows just how unhinged the character who makes it happen is.)

I recently watched Aristocats (my favorite Disney movie) and forgot how PASSIONATE and beautiful Disney used to be! Even though the art style was “messy” or “sketchy”, it added much more charm and character to the film! It wasn’t just a movie to watch, it was literal ART being hand drawn frame by frame, which makes you appreciate the film even more! Everyone was unique because they HAD to be (since it was hand drawn), as opposed to the same 3D face model being used over and over again and just switching out hair or eye color. Old Disney for the win

The release sequence wouldn't have changed anything. There are just too many bad ones storywise and people are getting tired of the woke nonsense on top of that. Even the better ones are very superficial light entertainment. They are nothing in comparison to the cultural phenomenons which Disney's movies once were. Also they should never have closed their 2D department. It's a shame that they let true art die. 3D is nice but not true art like hand drawn things are.

Think of all the people worldwide who have an Apple device in their pocket or on their person at all times. Apple also has knowledge of each person's media habits in a way Disney does not. Honestly I am ok with Disney going down. They don’t care about their employees. They’re just about money. They literally sue people for using the Disney font even if the words written don’t say Disney. That happened to one of my moms friends, she’s a wedding photographer and her client loved Disney, so the photographer hand wrote a banner that said something along the lines of Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. last name. She ended up posting some of the photos on Facebook, and around a month later she was contacted by someone from Disney saying that they would sue her for using their font even though it didn’t say Disney on it or even mention anything Disney related with it. I don’t think she actually ended up getting sued, but the people at Disney were completely willing to go through with it.

In discussing Disney's reshoot issues, and Mat's comments about the senior creative team needing to be on the same page, I was reminded of the ongoing writer's strike. One of the major complaints the WGA had was that the big studios are trying to cut them out of the production process as much as possible. Historically the writers of a film or television episode have been involved with the shooting and editing process to coordinate any changes that need to be made to the story during the filmmaking process. It would honestly be poetic if by trying to shortchange the writers led to companies like Disney actually losing money from the cost of expensive reshoots, and lost revenue from inferior writing.

I looked up Encanto and saw that it pulled $257 million worldwide against a $150 million estimated production budget. While that is successful in a way compared to Disney's most recent efforts, it's almost guaranteed the film didn't return a profit after considering marketing and distribution costs. A 2021 release would have certainly affected ticket sales, of course.
Frozen is now so old that it doesn't really reflect the kind of products modern Disney is capable of making. It might as well be from another company at this point. For reference, Frozen's production budget was reported to be $150 million and its worldwide gross was $1,285 million. And that wouldn't count merchandising and branding tie-ins of course.

As a father of a little girl I can assure you of that. That is all profits that Disney sees but are not calculated in box office or review scores. I think that another huge problem that Disney has is how they market their original stories. Most people who saw Elemental enjoyed the movie, but I know that the reason most didn’t go to see it in theaters (me included) was because a lot of the marketing for the movie centered around an annoying 'comedic' character. When you watch the movie, that character is in 3, maybe 4, scenes and speaks very little but his face was EVERYWHERE in the marketing. So people were like 'This annoying character is going to be in a lot of the movie, so I'm not gonna see it.'
The same is going on rn with their newest original IP 'Wish'. The main marketing for it that I've seen has been the villain's song which most people don't like, but I've heard absolutely nothing else about it. I have no idea what the movie is about, even when looking on Wikipedia or Google.

Look at how they treat writers and actors as if they are completely replaceable. Talent and Gift are not replaceable but management is. That’s why they’re striking. To protect their livelihood, their art and their hard work. It’s pretty obvious that when management “makes” a movie, it’s not very good because they go off a trend and a formula. “Art for the sake of Art” doesn’t always make huge amounts of money but it can make stories that touch and inspire. This might be controversial, but I admire how the Theory team has always (even in the way early days) been upfront and transparent with its community. A lot of brands /say/ they're transparent, but really they're just showing "bloopers" and a tiny tip of the iceberg to give off an impression. Mat's always been upfront about all the work that goes into running all five channels, while respecting his company, his employees, and his family. Honestly, I think more and more people are leaning towards that style of open communication and trusting more indie brands that show the nitty gritty truth about reality. I wish more brands saw that and leaned into it, rather than doubling down on keeping everything wrapped up tight.

I will acknowledge some of the remakes have been good and did something new with them like they did with Maleficent. one of the scary things ive heard about Disney's reshooting problem that wasnt fully mentioned here is how in the dark they keep their actors about scripts, scenes and even their own characters. things have become so much more ridgid, characters lack the life and fun their used to have, all because the actors themselves have no idea whats going on. A lot of times actors are called in for shoots, given a script and what to do, and have no idea about context or anything. Which is especially prevalent throughout the marvel series. if i remember correctly their is an interview with tom holland somewhere that has him discussing this problem during end game. all in all, the actors themselves arent allowed to act out the characters they no best, or advise on script changes like the good ol days. There's no imporvising or character to them leaving the content over all feeling dull and bland, really proving the point that these films are in fact just desprate cash grabs and content pumps by big wigs who no nothing about plot, flow, and character. its truely sad to have grown up and seen my favorite shows and characters become this. shame on you disney. shame on you.

THIS. The actors need to be able to *act* the role, not be puppets. Can you imagine how boring things like D&D (yes ik I'm a nerd) would be if players were told their characters stories, but only a very limited amount so they had no idea what was going on? It would be so bland. Plus, while I have no way of knowing, I feel like the scripts they reshoot or redo were actually pretty good (or at least not worth doubling production cost to get rid of) because they hired great people to direct it.This isn't a random highschool project where no one cares

Yeah the good old days, like when Empire Strikes Back happened and even while filming the movie they didn't give away the twist to anyone but James Earl Jones because his audio was dubbed in afterwards.... This has been going on forever, and movies are better for it, frequently it is to get the more natural reaction on camera, or because some people (Tom Holland, Carrie Fisher) were just incapable of keeping a secret.

Blaming the fans and especially if there is an -istaphobe component to it. Case in point: Ghostbusters 2016. It didn't tickle the fancy of a lot of original Ghostbuster fans, and putting the original cast as just 'member berry cameos (especially Bill Murray's cameo) that paid them no respect didn't help either. Especially for me, it wasn't the characters I grew up with and the type of humor wasn't my cup of tea. Putting people like me on blast for not seeing it because we're a bunch of woman haters? Not gonna win any fans over.
Afterlife had a wonderfully diverse cast, primarily a female lead (without making it a hard selling point of love it or else you're an -istaphobe) and gave love to the original characters. That did much better. Just like Mando season 2 bringing in Luke Skywalker at the end (which is rumored to have been done without certain bigwigs knowledge because they didn't want the old school characters). That got the biggest positive fan response Star Wars had generated since Force Awakens was announced.

Zootopia's original storyline was incredible; predators had to wear shock colars from an early age which kicked in whenever they were becoming aggressive, primarily to protect the prey population. However, they were not calibrated correctly and punished preditors for experiencing any intense emotion: joy, distress etc. Nick was the protagonist, where he made a sidehussle of a thrill park for preditors where their collars were removed for their duration there (not entirely legally, which is where Judy would come in), as an escape from the dismall life they lead. You can find this storyline in compilations of storyboards and even some unpolished animations here on TH-cam.
Imagine my disappointment when the buddy-cop storyline came out instead. If the second film was turned into a prequal where the original storyline is discussed it would be fantastic, though that's unlikely to be the case.

When they were doing really well, the parks were great and they had the occasional excellent animated movie among the other just "good" ones, when they had the money to make all these acquisitions but hadn't spent it yet that's when it was a great time to be a Disney fan. But since then, they have added barely anything to the parks meanwhile Universal has a new park and Nintendo on top of the wizarding world. Same with movies and even videogames now too they just farm their IP out to other companies looking to make a quick buck... Its all just damaging their brand. But as you said, we know they have so many talented people over there, they just need a chance to shine and not be forced to work on yet another live action remake.

It really is a shame that the people running the show have no idea what they're doing, and the people who endlessly bust their asses to make these products get shafted through no fault of their own. I've got nothing but respect for the guy putting in 15 hour days 7 days a week for months on end. What I have no respect for is the asshole who steps in and tells him to start over 3 months into the project. The best movies and shows ever made have either been allowed to do whatever they wanted, or did it against the studio's wishes anyway.
It's weirdly why I like what Riot did with Arcane. They did step in 2 years into the project and told them to start over, except they increased the budget and gave them even more time to get it finished. Man, I don't care if Season 2 doesn't come out until 2027, so long as they maintain the same quality of animation and storytelling. And I think that's one thing Disney really doesn't understand. Just because there's a massive demand for something, doesn't mean you give it to people as quickly as possible in some desperate scramble to maximize profits. People want quality products, especially from established franchises that they've fallen in love with.

This is a pattern I see in game development and the communities people just don’t seem to understand the work that goes into a good video games for example let’s talk about the unreleased silk song it’s taken 6 years so far, versus cod games (I personally do t play cod so correct me if I’m wrong) which cod releases a game about every year the problem being is these new games probably aren’t always fleshed out and also I really doubt there’s much hype for them either and it’s just a cash grab from what I see (again not a cod player) while silksong has theses expectations and has hype being built up and people are kinda hungry for some good hollow knight content or have been waiting a while and probably gonna buy day one
Of release and on top of that’s it’s probably going to be very good and fleshed out so it will go very well, meanwhile cod it releases every year it’s nothing special maybe some new maps weapons or balancing but it’s not going to be any extreme differences so theirs no expectations or hype so people just buy it when they get completely bored of the last thing and want a new game
And this makes a pattern that makes people think oh coding isn’t hard a cod game takes only a year to make surely silksong should have been out by now. But the thing is silk song (presumably again idk anything about cod maybe the games are better the. What I hear the newer ones I mean) is probably going to be fleshed out and going to take more time as they are going to make sure weapons and enemies are balanced for FAIR but CHALLENGING gameplay (fair meaning it’s very possible you have the tools you need and every fight is “fair” while challenging means it’s hard it takes skill but not luck and your given the proper tools to win) another thing to add is people are like well these mods release stuff so fast. Well first of all mods are faster because they don’t follow the same rules the devs have they don’t follow the same development style so they can come up with faster or less fleshed out solutions (not to say mods are bad they are in fact really good usually) so people are like why is it so slow to develop well it’s because game developers have to follow certain guidelines they (for example Mojang wouldn’t add mobs or events that can place or break blocks (with the exception of a few different things such as creepers or lightning) while mods don’t

      She hulk
      The last terminator movie
      Charlie’s angels I think
Probably more I’ll find them later
And not all the time. While you have a few bad apples. A lot of fans like me just want to see the original story developed in a respected way. A lot of writers don’t respect the original work. She hulk writer Jessica what’s her face said it. The guy who is working on X-men 97 said it about the Witcher writers. Even Kathleen Kennedy once in an interview literally said “well it’s not like we have books to take and adapt into movies” when there are literally a ton of Star Wars books. As someone who aspires to be a writer who makes something that lasts generations, I fear of my work being disrespected and tainted by someone else not caring about it. Just doing it for the easy cash grab. I love the original work, and a lot of fans do! The IP’s name has weight to it. We all know Batman. But it wouldn’t feel like a Batman movie if it was like Barbie. Likewise, not as many people would watch Barbie if it was dark and gloomy like Gotham city. We all love these because they feel like the original things we enjoyed as kids. It’s these fans who keep started the brand in the first place. No one would watch iron man if it wasn’t a comic book that held weight to begin with. By alienating these fans who started the franchise to begin with you do nothing but just hurt the brand. Tossed aside for the new generation. And even if it’s just 30-40% of revenue you are missing out on, that’s still a lot of revenue. I want marvel and Star Wars to keep going and I know you do to. If anything writers should be writing something that appeals to the original fanbase, so they can use word of mouth to spread to everyone else. It will bring back the magic of marvel again.

So I've been watching Matpat ever since Game Theory was a solo channel, and almost eight years later, the Theorist channels STILL have a seal of quality that's almost unrivaled on YT. I trust a good Theorist channel video more than just about any other theory channel's out there, and that's because they put research and effort into every episode, and it SHOWS. The quality is always top-notch, and they work hard to preserve that reputation. They know their audience and have adapated as their audience changes. Matpat is insanely smart, and this episode just highlights that. Proud to be a theorist!🎉

18:37-18:52 Hearing you say that reminded me of the production of The Thief and the Cobbler.
Like Disney with their movies, Richard Williams would also throw out days of work that didn’t meet his exact standards.
This resulted in sequences that while visually amazing, don’t come together as a unified whole.

maybe idk but why now years after the first if the og creators had a story they could have made it back then, as animation doesn't have the same limitations as live action where a director like james cameron has to wait years to bring his vision to life

I've largely stopped following the stuff Marvel is releasing because of the amount of failures they released. I experiment when sewing and often measure once cut, twice. But half the time I'm working on scraps and not actually expecting to either get a good result or expecting to be able to sell or gift it. But I'm always aware of how much fabric and thread I'm wasting because I can see it. I feel like since Disney can't physically see how much is actually being wasted they're spending more and more.

Disney didn't really care for a long time because they thought themselves too big to fail. Well, turns out when your actors, writers, and directors insult a lot of the fan base, that's gonna affect how much money you get.

    • @jangelaclough5457

I honestly feel that way with almost every company, and I think it's mainly because they are being run by people (typically older) running it based on rules/concepts from the 90s, and are just so hesitant to make any risks or moves. Like, how long did Netflix control the streaming market before any company said "hey, maybe we should do it?". The ONLY reason those companies even have a fighting chance is because Netflix was run so ineptly due to being uncontested for so long. Or look at Amazon. They've been dominating the whole "virtual retailer market" for so long, and countless companies still have ancient webpages with awful delivery policies (I recalled trying to buy stuff from BJs and I was able to add stuff to the cart but it wouldn't tell me which items weren't available until AFTER I went to checkout and was hit with an error message. Why?)
They've also been so focused on short term gain, they've forgotten about long term sales. Disney has been hiking prices at Disney world for awhile. Putting countless "quality of life" items behind paywall (like the ability wait in virtual queues or getting discounts on foods). These are items that aren't going to hurt Disney's revenue but are REALLY helpful for the countless of working families going on vacation. Instead, they decide to focus on making more money NOW by adding a price tag on those items which will help now, but will result in less people vacationing or purchasing those items.
