  • If your differential is not vented and the seals are leaking, try venting it before you tear the front end apart.

    2 year later update...... I had a front wheel bearing start to go bad so I replaced the axle seals while I was in there. I still have the vent installed and haven't had any problems with leaks. The vent stopped the leak for 2 years, but it could not help a bad bearing on the left side. The right side bearing was fine and never started leaking again after the vent was installed.

    My 2012 New Holland boomer 30 is starting to leak at 270h... any chance part sizes will be similar to Yanmar?

      I have not. The leak slowed way down. It doesn't run down the tire now. It's a check it once a year leak now

    I think it is a great idea. My seals started leaking after making a 1/2 mile round trip to bring back mulch. Only leaks now when the axle warms up, I’ll do the same and keep an eye on the fluid level.

    what part number for the breather did you use? Having this issue with my john deere 4100 tractor's front axle and would like to try this out. Been searching online but don't see the one you may have purchased.

      I got it from a local komatsu dealer. You just need a breather with pipe thread.

    Do you happen to remember the thread size of the axle port? I'm guessing it is an SAE -8 O-ring port, but wanted to see if you could recall. Also, where did you source the little yellow breather filter?

    • @LostSkills
      @LostSkills  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not remember the port size. It looks like about the same size as a #8 SAE. I took the dipstick in the store with me and we matched it up from that. The breather is from a Komastu dealer. That is where I got the hose. Any breather with pipe thread would work. It was a common breather that they had on the shelf.

    • @LostSkills

      The vent really slowed down the leak. A good opportunity to try some AT-205 swell seal in there. So far it's not leaking, but I am sure I will have to replace the seals eventually. The point of this video is that the seals should not have failed at only 700 hours. So I would recommend venting it to hopefully make the new seals last. All automotive front and rear ends are vented, as it the rear axle of all tractors I have ever seen. It makes no sense to me why the front diff of most compact tractors is not vented. The only thing I can figure is price. It will work for a while, get you out of warranty and then fail. I would expect front axle seals to last for thousands of hours, but they didn't because the case was under pressure

    Yo - I've a New Holland 1720 that's been leaking from the front hub just like you showed. I changed the gear oil when I first got the tractor about 7 years ago and it didn't leak at first, but for the last period of time it's been leaking down the tire just like you showed. I figured I'd have to tear the hub apart and was set to do that but imagine my luck to come across your excellent video first up in my research. So out I go and when I pull the dipstick a definite hiss of compressed air.
    Thanks for saving me a TON of effort here.

    I agree with you that the casing should be ventilated. I have a ford tractor doing the same thing and took the dipstick out to find a blast of pressure. I think ill fill it up with 90 wt gear oil instead of the thin hydro oil and vent it. If it still leaks bad enough ill change the seals. If it just seeps ill wait till winter to replace the seels. Thanks for this video

      I hope it helps. Really slowed my leak down. I dumped some at-205 Re seal in it and it stopped leaking completely.
