I just checked my 2501 and it was completely empty. Thank you for the heads up ! I would have ruined my tractor if it wasn’t for this video! Thank you so much!
Great tip for those who are unaware. I checked my Kubota tractor day of delivery when new. And 4yrs (160hrs) later, its still clean and on the full mark on the dip stick. I very diligent about checking ALL my fluids before i start & use my tractor`s. Most people don`t, and then that is when they get in trouble. Its not hard to check the fluids before starting it.
Thanks buddy. Saw video about a week ago. Finally found my front axel drain and fill. Fluid was trans fluid, changed with 90 weight heavy oil. It was considerably low, not touching dip stick. Thanks! You increased the life of my axel.
Thank you 🙏. I went to the garage. Broke the check open, nothing. Broke the fill and put an additional 2.5 quarts of 85-90 until it started leaking out ….. not ok with this. I’m so glad you posted this video.

This video is performing really well! I changed it at around 900 on my M6060, still looked clean. This is something that should be checked day one on getting a tractor, my bx was very low and I didn’t catch it for a long time. I only did check because of hearing other people talk about this issue. Appreciate you mentioning my channel! Excellent video Richie!
I did a video last summer on my channel Ben and when I checked the level, it was low. I checked it after I brought the tractor home but hadn't run it in 4Wd. I was shocked at how low it was with just over 200 hours on the tractor. Since filling, I have checked twice and the level is right where it is supposed to be. I think Richies theory is spot on. Totally makes sense to me.
It takes some time for it to go through the pivot, especially when it’s cold. Don’t forget to take your grease gun to the pivot after you open the vent. I change my front end every hydraulic change. I use gear oil, the thicker the better. 👍
I just bought a 2022 L2501. It’s my first ever tractor. I check all my fluids when they delivered it to me except the front axle. Mine took almost a whole gallon of Super UDT2 fluid. Luckily I only put 4 hours on it before realizing this issue. Thank you so much for this video. You saved me a big headache down the road!
Agreed, i would hate to see someone go to do the 800 hour service and come to find that they have been low on fluid for that many hours. And by that time most likely out of warranty.
My B7800 has a dipstick (yellow plastic) on the front axle, which looks very similar to yours. Industrial sight plugs are available for many threads, and it might be worth retrofitting the non-dipstick models, then you could check the level with a flashlight. My B7800 (2006 model year) had 570hrs on it and was a tad low when I got it. I did a full service on it with all Kubota parts from Messicks and used UDT-2 (7 gallons) as well, not cheap but cheaper than replacing the finals or worse. I do need to be more diligent about pre-flight checks, especially when it's sub zero out. Good video, hope it saves some tractor owners big repairs, Thanks!
It seems this video has raised a lot of awareness which was my intention. I dont think being two quarts low will cause catastrophic damage but better to be within specification versus not even checking it!
Thanks for the video. I just changed the axile oil in my BX23S. I only had 150 hrs, but saw it was low. Turned out it was a little over half but I didn’t see ant meatal shavings. Shame because the dealer supposedly did my 50 hr check. I have now went back and did everything they charged me for.
Thanks for the info. When I did my 200 HR service on my 2017 BX I checked it. It was 1-2 qts low. My Kubota service manual says to "change" it at every 400 hrs. My fill plug on my Kubota 2380 for the front axle case is on top Driver's side. I also found a socket extension buried/stuck under the tractor and a miscellaneous bolt and washer just laying around. Can't remember where, but I wonder who is prepping these for delivery? Oh, and also, the height adjustment knob for the mower deck is just impossible to turn at times without a pair of large channel locks
The use of UDT in the front differentials on these tractors can lead to leaks in the knuckle seals. It was recommended to me by the dealer to use 75/80 weight gear oil which is thicker and will not bypass the seals.
Ive had an issue with my 40 year old L where there would be too much pressure in the case when warm; causing fluid to blow by the seals. First I tried a plastic stand-up vent but it got torn off. I got a bolt with the correct thread and drilled a 90 degree 1/16 hole through the head and bolt body. This provides ventilation for expansion and contraction.
wow, I went to check the level and the bolt tried to fly away from the pressure. I never thought of that. Thanks for the comment. Maybe it will stop that oil leak I am having without having to split the tractor.

How's she goin'? Great tip here and thanks for sharing. I have a Massey Ferguson GC2300 sub-compact tractor and the front axle leaks oil around the pivoting joint for the offset drive to the wheels. I check this oil level probably every other time I take the tractor out as it is often low on oil!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!!
Received my L2501 DT Friday, opened over flow…nothing…opened fill plug and stuck my finger all the way down. Only felt residual on axle tube, I could not feel a fluid level, I will be topping it off tomorrow, glad I checked with .3 hours cause it’s low. Transmission oil is also not on sight glass, pointed it out from dealer deliver he said he will give me some free fluid. Thanks!!
I think the l-2501 requires 4.5 litres Canadian{?}.i checked mine and it required 2 litres of oil. They only put in half the required oil. That really opened my eyes as to the inspection and PDI of this piece of equipment. For the amount you pay for Kubota, there should be no guessing,it should be spot on!Good vid.
If you use your tractor to remove snow you should swap your front axle to the 85-90W gear oil. What happens is you are using it and working it in the cold. When you are done you park it and all the fluid got warm from working so it melts the snow. The gear oil is pretty thick and does not warm up as much as the hydraulic fluid that most manufacturers put in there. As everything cools it contracts and can suck that water inside your front axle. Their has been many people that have popped their dipstick out only to find their gears and front axle were all rusted up from water contamination. The thicker gear oil does not get as warm and you don't have that problem.
I agree with your assessment. I doubt it's dealer policy, but the mechanic is cutting corners. Of course if there is an issue, the dealer will say you are not doing the proper maintenance. Great Tip Richie - Enjoy the journey - cheers

My BX was low too straight from the dealer. When I changed it , went with gear oil and just elevated the axle a bit so I could rotate the wheels by hand. That settled the oil into the hub straight off. Been good since and I’m at 680 hours. Surprised your 2501 doesn’t have a dip stick for the front axle. Thought that was standard. Thanks for the reminder though as I should probably change mine again soon.
you are correct, have a mx 5800 300 hours, never checked the 4 wheel drive never seen any leaks, until last week the left bearing shelled out when driving and the wheel fell off nice. anyway the axel cost me 458 dollars and the 2 race bearings and seals, another 150 dollars plus the 7.8 quarts of lube, so check are pay the price, if Kubota did the repairs you would be looking at over are close to 1500 are 2000 dollars in repairs
I have a brand new BX2380 ( about 60 hours on it ) and now am very curious to see how much oil I have. I will be checking on this once spring arrives. Thanks for your video ! it's much appreciated !
Use an Allen key to check fluid levels on stuff like this. Take the short end and put it in the check hole, then hold the longer end up flat or level. Then pull it out and check the wet fluid level mark on the allen wrench. This doesn't tell you how much to add, but does give you an idea of how low it is.
@HillsideAcres That is exactly how it is supposed to be checked. If you use the Allen key method, just like you would with a differential on any equipment or vehicle... And the fluid level is flush with the top of the fill level drain check hole, like the Allen key would show, then you know for certain if it is full, slightly low or really low. This is how you check these types of port hole fluid levels without guessing and dumping oil in to see if it comes out... Not saying your method is wrong, but there is a much easier way to know without guessing. Also, just because the manufacturer says a service isn't due till this many hours, doesn't mean checking or doing the service earlier isn't a good idea. I personally like to double up on my break in service schedule on new equipment because that is the most important service time. On my new L3901, I did a full service at the 50hr, 100hr and 200hr intervals. Then again at 400 hrs, because why not. A few extra hundred to protect a $30k machine is well worth the extra money spent. I just did my 800 hr full service.
Every 800 may seem excessive but its a good practice to drain and look for metal chips, those angle drives don't like chips and the bevel gear teeth are under a massive load sometimes in 4wd. A couple quarts of oil vs $1k to replace gears, bearings, seals and a cracked housing.
@@HillsideAcres Had a Kubota blow up a front drive and farmer next door with a compact deere. Helped him go through his front axle after a sudden dissasembly. Good maintenance for the kubota also doesn't seem to mention pop out the front driveshaft couplers and lube them now and again every couple years else the rust eats the splines, not an overly expensive repair but it breaks when you need it most.
My L3130 started leaking at the left front hub. The seal was bad so I replaced both sides. It was a bitch but doable. Had to drain a lot of fluid because it has to fill both hub gear cases also. I don't think the dealer shorted me on fluid because I checked it a couple of times a year. I think driving it on the road for 3 to 5 miles every so often did it. I now trailer it everywhere unless it is only a half mile or so. I think I went back with the Super UDT. Thanks for a good video.
As watched, I had to quickly check on mine as the dealer told me to use gear lube Front axle case . (SAE85-,90 gear oil) Then double checked and either or could be used. Front axle case KUBOTA UDT or SUPER UDT fluid* or SAE80, 90 gear oil. I had serviced my B2650HSDC-TLB at 400 hours and I replaced the existing fluid which was gear lube from the factory.
Can’t go wrong keeping a close eye on your fluids. My truck isn’t always polished up, but you can bet the bank all of my fluids and filters are on point! Bought my b2601 brand new and there wasn’t a fluid on the machine that was right when I got it. The dealer I bought it from also needs to get there techs a new torque wrench. Ended up going over every bolt on the tractor after two chassis bolts and a rear wheel lug fell off just mowing with the belly mower. Ridiculous quality control. Fact is, we all make huge investments in these machines, take a few minutes and keep thing tight and topped off and you’ll get several thousand hours out of these tractors.
I just checked my L2501 and just like you said it was low and I only have 89 hours on it thank you the heads up hope to see more of your videos thank you Tony G
So, I’ve worked with 80w 90 gear lube before, and I’ve used Kubota super UDT. The latter falls somewhere between a typical hydraulic oil and an engine oil in apparent viscosity at room temperature, as I recall, and 80/90 gearlube is on the extreme end of viscosity, almost a grease rather than an oil. Can someone please explain to me how any piece of equipment can call for either of these products interchangeably in the manufacturer’s specifications?
I believe it comes down to the operating temperature where the tractor is located. If you feel more comfortable with a heavier viscosity oil, then use it. 👍🏻
My 04 b7800 was bone dry, 900 hrs on it, i shutter to think how longs it been that way. Had it since 700 hrs. I was told the hydro trans hydro fluid was shared throughout the diffs.
Speaking of maintenance: Thoughts on the manual often saying, (ex.) "Check/change every 200 hrs or every 1-2 yrs, whichever comes first." The years of ownership seems a little overblown, but how seriously should I be taking it? Thoughts?
It’s a pretty good idea to go by the manual, checking on things like engine oil and hydro more often. A through annual servicing with regular greasing is typically good for most

Use an Allen key to check fluid levels on stuff like this. Take the short end and put it in the check hole, then hold the longer end up flat or level. Then pull it out and check the wet fluid level mark on the allen wrench. This doesn't tell you how much to add, but does give you an idea of how low it is.
I prefer the way it’s designed to be checked. Showing oil dosent mean filled to spec
My L2650 constantly gets water in the axel through the knuckel design. The udt seems very light to lubricate those big gears.
Can switch to gear oil
Mine was a gallon low! I learned about checking it at about 45 hours of time.
Every 800 may seem excessive but its a good practice to drain and look for metal chips, those angle drives don't like chips and the bevel gear teeth are under a massive load sometimes in 4wd. A couple quarts of oil vs $1k to replace gears, bearings, seals and a cracked housing.
Thanks for the info
New 2501 4 hours on it and it took well over a quart, all I have is Hyguard I hope that works with the kubota fluid.
Yep. Mine was 2 qts low on my 50 hr service on L2501. Dealer told me very common, come from factory that way, not dealer
Thanks for this video and showing how and where to fill.
Kubota should have made a dipstick for the front axle. would have made checking the oil simple
They could of done this, but they ( the Bean Counters)Liked, to save the 87 cents !
Thanks dude. Gonna check mine first thing tomorrow.
Nice toolbox Ritchie. I should check my fluid also.
Thanks Paul, your branson should be the same style front end and is certainly worth a quick check!
Make sure your front axel is
5:32 level.on Concrete is good but if on dirt it might give you different results
I just checked my L2501 and just like you said it was low and I only have 89 hours on it thank you the heads up hope to see more of your videos thank you Tony G
BX2380 here, walked by it this AM and wondered what that front axle cap was for......
Can’t hurt to check it out!
A good tip - rebuilding that front drive axle would not be fun or cheap.
Mine was full when I checked it after buying it. My dealer is good and sells a tons of 2501s and the guys that put them together do a great job.
Thats great to hear, unfortunately ive heard more people being low versus people at the correct level
You hit the nail on the head "poor serviceing".
My 04 b7800 was bone dry, 900 hrs on it, i shutter to think how longs it been that way. Had it since 700 hrs. I was told the hydro trans hydro fluid was shared throughout the diffs.
Man, good point. Nice save and it makes sense what you said about the dealer topoff. 🙏’freeze
That wrench drawer is awesome
Great video! I check on my 2501 as soonest i removed a plug it’s started leaking! I’m sure it was full
Isn’t the larger hole for filling and smaller for checking? When it starts coming out it’s full?
My 1988 L2850 has a dipstick on the front diff which is nice.
mine took over Half gal to top it off with only 50 hours new from the dealer
Speaking of maintenance:
Thoughts on the manual often saying, (ex.) "Check/change every 200 hrs or every 1-2 yrs, whichever comes first." The years of ownership seems a little overblown, but how seriously should I be taking it? Thoughts?
It’s a pretty good idea to go by the manual, checking on things like engine oil and hydro more often. A through annual servicing with regular greasing is typically good for most
Good morning Sir, you have a very nice AIR FORCE quality tool set 👍🧐 Yes Ben ( K&H tractor ) is a great reference man for sure 😉👌 Yes in deed, any fluids must be check often 🧐👍 OUTSTANDING VIDEO Sir and keep up your OUTSTANDING work both of you Cheers 🍻👌
I love the foam set tools, makes everything so organized! Have a good one Dave!
@@HillsideAcres For us, it is easier to look if we forgot tool inside the aircraft ( Aircraft tool Control ) You too have a great one CHeers
Great video Richie. I agree with your assessment.
Thanks Gary, this video has helped quite a few people so far which makes me feel awesome and prevent possible damage!
Approaching the 800 hour mark and getting ready to do some maintenance. Not sure where things are at. Wish I would have seen this sooner. Cross your fingers for me.
My 40hp was on it's 50 hour check and i had real trouble getting the service guy in Thailand to check it. so i did it while he was there watching and it took half of a 4.5 litre can and the service guy couldn't believe it .
Hope you serviced that boot on the check valve side!
I wish you had showed the front axle gear oil in your video as I could not understand what oil to use.
I used super udt2 it was in the audio. Can also use gear as per your owners manual. I topped up with udt2 because that’s what was from factory and I did not want to mix
I've got a L3901. I will check it! Thank you.
Good job and thanks for the important information. Take care.
Thank you for watching!
Very good advice & need to know 👍🇺🇸 Thank you.
I put a clear surgical hose on the end of my funnel that sits in the filler hole made life a lot easier to fill you should try it it really is a great Helping Hand
I have all that stuff but currently in a transition of moving a house building a new shop and barn lots of stuff in boxes lol
@@HillsideAcres you be working out of boxes 📦for a while. Lol
My 5240 had hydrolic oil in it from day 1,brand new,the left side gear assembly failed.i had to replace all of it,1500.00 bucks in parts alone, now they put in 50w synthetic.
Yes super udt2 is standard from factory just not enough of it
I have an M5660, and I am going to check tomorrow Thanks
I need to check my B2601. Thanks!
I think the b has a dip stick. Let me know what you find !
@@HillsideAcres I’m pretty sure it does too.
