Had it simulcast on Triple J radio those commie lick spittle NWO at same time watched it Darwin CRT . pretty cool . . going through the stereo complicated affair
Yes mate, you're correct there. A personal favorite is an outdoor concert by them at Portarlington in southern Victoria in the summer of '83. The "warmup" band was Painters & Dockers !!!! 😄😁😜
Incredible..🖤 The seconds between 1:36 and 1:46 are so beautiful, that i get goosebombs all over my body and sometimes tears in my eyes everytime i hear them
i remember watching "oils on the water" on the abc back in 1985, i was living in queensland at the time, its the best live show of all time!, i went on holiday to sydney in jan 85, and got the 2 JJJ oils on the water gig shirt. I saw them live for the first time in nov 85 in rockhampton, then a month later in sydney for the "save our rain forest" gig, with spy v spy, do re mi, warumpi band, awsome!!, i still have gig shirts 4 both shows!, i last saw oils at the n.e.c in birmingham, uk in 1990.
Having attended the state funeral for Uncle Jack Charles two days ago I haven't been able to get this song out of my head since. PG actually looks like he's in physical pain at many points perfectly reflecting the deep grief I feel when I watch/hear it.
What an amazing time the mid 80s was for Australian performing atrs. So many things to be proud of in the lead up to the bi-Centenary. And Sydney harbour was and still is a amazing backdrop.
My favourite song...from my favourite aussie band...from the GREATEST live gig EVER played that I have seen....live or video....doesnt matter...I wish I was there ........UFF!!!!!!!
still the best in 2022 , great gig , the world stopped to watched this live simulcast in Port Macquarie , got the dvd and still a fave from start to finish
It's about how Sharman exploited Aboriginal boxers in his traveling boxing troupe. Didn't matter who won or lost, it was only about beating each other up, sometimes day after day. It went out of business in '71 when the law stated boxers could only fight once a week.
don't mean to be funny but it sounds like they're talking about undergarments remembering the days of Christmas gift boxes containing things undesirable.
....maybe you might dig my aussie bands new song - and ...our political stuff " BAD UNC SAM " ....the oils have lost the STING - we still have it ! -gives a thumbs up - or down .!! th-cam.com/video/eB7E2rc3bwg/w-d-xo.html
"From the red dust north of Dalmore Downs Sharman's tents roll into town Twelve will face the auctioneer Sharman's Boxers stand their ground Their days are darker than your nights But they won't be the first to fall Children broken from their dreams But they won't be the first to fall Fighting in the spotlight Eye's turn blacker than their skin For Jimmy Sharman's boxers It's no better if you win Standing in the darkness Lined up waiting for the bell The days are wasted drinking At the first and last hotel Why are we fighting for this? Why are you paying for this? You pay to see me fall like shrapnel To the floor What is the reason for this? There is a reason for this? What is the reason they keep coming back for more? The blows now bring him to his knees But still the crowd calls out for more The drums are burning in his ears The man keeps counting out the score"
Magical......great band, great performance. ....oh to have been there in the flesh. What a privilege that would've been. Mesmerising.....The Oils were a big part of my formative years. Shame how it all faded away for them, oh well.
My partner, who I hadn’t met yet was south oz listening to this. I was in new south wishing I was at concert live.He died 3 yrs ago. Thanks for the memories ...
I have had the pleasure of being in that location in New South Wales, Sydney, and I also had the pleasure of seeing this insightful group live, but that was in Orange County, CA. Both of them are on the top of my list!
this gig is the best , brings back so many memories as a teen when it happened ,the east coast surfing community stopped like Melbourne cup day .... 2023 and still relevant
The coincidental juxtaposition of the setting sun and the increasing intensity of this song - that's something else. By the end of the song we're in a different universe, and it all happens to subtly.
Remember getting this on cassette in 1988 in a $2.99 bargain bin. I had just discovered Midnight Oil from 120 Minutes - my first exposure with "Beds Are Burning" -- sure I'm not the first. Anyway, I was completely blown away with this album -- especially this song. Still amazed by it today
i just fell in love with the oils even more.what an electrifying rift.it's hauntingly beutiful saluting/honouring/respecting a part of our precious cultural heritage /history. as a young kid ,jimmy sharman's tent was always a wonderous highlight of our local annual show
if only we took more seriously the words in this song, its so powerful, 'why are we fighting for this........' Petes passion is amazing, the brutal truth of war and fighting is so demonstrated in this song, the oils forever
+ albert dib, you are spot on mate, this song should be taught in all australian high schools, every sentence explored, teach the children about compassion to fellow humans, not this dog eat dog , lets scapegoat refugees, unemployed, greenies, unions, etc, spewed out by a heartless liberal party and labour are no better. After they finish jimmy sharmans, the kids can learn , U.S forces then, power and passion (" gough was tough till he hit the rough, uncle sam and johnny quite enough). the kids today are taught a whitewashed version of history.
Phenomenal song! Phenomenal Band! Phenomenal decade! Only regret is never being able to see the lads live! Thanks for both the concert footage and for finally getting this, one of my favourite songs, on the 'tube. Frank.
1980's Scotland: Big Country, The Waterboys, Simple Minds, etc. ; 1908's Australia: INXS, Midnight Oil, Men at Work. All anti-militaristic, anti-racist, liberatory, post-punk GENIUS. So amazing, and each with their own voice, Midnight Oil was absolutely briliant.
Thanks so much for this Skitizen. It's been my favourite Oils song since I borrowed "Red Sails in the Sunset" on cassette from my local library (*ahem*, many, many years ago). I bought my own copy and wore it out :)
What a fuc$%ng powerhouse of a song and a band!!
One of the greatest sets in Australia's history.
Couldn’t agree more!
Had it simulcast on Triple J radio those commie lick spittle NWO at same time watched it Darwin CRT . pretty cool . . going through the stereo complicated affair
Just telling me mum AC/DC shoulda done a concert at Sydney Harbour somewhere imagine a beach & boat was only way 2see em small pleasurecraft
Yes sir! Banger! Ooooooo!
Absolutely agree!
they put so many other bands to FUCKING shame.... thats how good they are and have always been
40yrs I've worshiped em like a lot of Australians black or white
Oils on Water... one of the greatest live recording ever...
Yeah seen them 78 times live in80-90s but missed this it was fantastic prob watched 70-80 times
Indisputable. Analogue brilliance. The sound deck mixer was on point!
The sections in this song where the guitars roar together literally bring tears to my eyes. The guitar tones are incredible.
the guitar tones are sooooo great aren't they
Yeah and those AC30 Vox amps sound amazing!
I see a Marshall...? AC30s roar, no doubt.
@@mattgilbert7347
The amplifier behind Martin Rotsey looks like a Marshall JMP 2203 (I think AC/DC used them as well).
@@masteryoda498 right you are! :)
One of the greatest bands to see live.

Greatest song in Aussie history. Bar none
Incredible..🖤

The power in this is phenomenal.
PG was such a physical performer. Unique combination of art, intellect and physicality.
And soul!
Holy crap this is GREAT - that's the way you build a song from a spark to explosion. Good on ya Oils!
due to alcohol it's been since 2009 my final stay at the holiday inn on 17th street in that i developed a phobia.
This band is so tight...such great musicians.
The song is so much better live than on the record.
Just discovered this song and I was BLOWN away. Wow
They must be one of the best live bands ever. Thx for posting.
Saw them on Saturday at Hope Estate Hunter Valley.... absolutely amazing!
What a band for that particular time great to see live reminds me of my youth 😀😀😀
His voice is awesome I don't care who hates it.
I still listen to Red Sails In The Sunset. Great stuff.
What I would do to go back in time and be in the live audience of this amazing act. Probably the best performance ever by a Aussie band.
i remember watching "oils on the water" on the abc back in 1985, i was living in queensland at the time, its the best live show of all time!, i went on holiday to sydney in jan 85, and got the 2 JJJ oils on the water gig shirt. One of the best live acts in the world and such good music with great meaning
Having attended the state funeral for Uncle Jack Charles two days ago I haven't been able to get this song out of my head since. PG actually looks like he's in physical pain at many points perfectly reflecting the deep grief I feel when I watch/hear it.
This, kids, is how you build a song to a crescendo. Fucking spine tingling.
First time seeing this. I’m a mess right now. Huge fan of this song. And this band.
Awesome performance. They did so many great songs but the drama and passion stand out so much in this
I remember enjoying watching the whole concert on TV with my brother. We no longer talk to each other any more, funny how life goes.
What an amazing time the mid 80s was for Australian performing atrs. So many things to be proud of in the lead up to the bi-Centenary. And Sydney harbour was and still is a amazing backdrop.

The change…..from 1:35. These are the perfect moments that keep me alive.
I like how at the beginning there is more light in the back round and at the end it's dark as the sun went down...great band the oils.
"From the red dust north of Dalmore Downs
Sharman's tents roll into town
Twelve will face the auctioneer
Sharman's Boxers stand their ground
Their days are darker than your nights
But they won't be the first to fall
Children broken from their dreams
But they won't be the first to fall
Fighting in the spotlight
Eye's turn blacker than their skin
For Jimmy Sharman's boxers
It's no better if you win
Standing in the darkness
Lined up waiting for the bell
The days are wasted drinking
At the first and last hotel
Why are we fighting for this?
Why are you paying for this?
You pay to see me fall like shrapnel
To the floor
What is the reason for this?
There is a reason for this?
What is the reason they keep coming back for more?
The blows now bring him to his knees
But still the crowd calls out for more
The drums are burning in his ears
The man keeps counting out the score"

Legend Band😊
ohhh those guitars !!!!
Peter Garrett just lays it out on this one like only he can!
My fave concert ever!
My 14 year old son saw Peter Garrett and said "Is that the Rock?". :-). I told him this video is about 36 years old.
Gifford's bass playing from 5.00 to 6.00 is sensational. I think the Oil's lost a hell of a lot ,when he left the band.
Agree
Absolutely agree! Their hard edge was lost and the music was more commercial and mainstream sounding.
When they hired him they said they wanted an animal on bass and an animal is what they got.
100%
Greatest rock bass player Australia has ever produced, in my opinion.
Someone Else To Blame? That bassline is off tap. Incredible.
Just gets more relevant.
1980s were definitely the decade of the music band spectacular this song which was filmed in Sydney Harbour. What a great backdrop for a concert
peter gifford best bassman of oils!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just amazine!!! Simple as that... sends chills up my spine!! Go Oils!!
Pure Aussie passion.
Magic.

Saw these guy's about a dozen times, they NEVER disappointed!!! Some of the best shows I ever saw!!! Where are the bands like this today??
My biggest idol in the worl .. Peter Garrett with Midnight Oil is back again! Finally .... after 21 years later
The emotion, the empathy a primal cry.
Saw them live in Irvine about 1989. Love Midnight Oil!
I watched this as a 13 yr ol with my older brother, Great memories Awesome band!
Fantastic - what a spectacle!
An anthem from my youth!
One of the greats .
i was 14 in 1985, best music time ever, had the late seventies, eighties and nineties, love the Oils
Great comment :) Great performance of one of their best songs. Love this concert - it's hard to believe it was 27 years ago!
Even harder to believe it's now 39 years ago.
Quel morceau ... c'est vraiment excellent !!!
Thanks for this... Gold then, Gold now.

this is how Peter Garrett should give speeches in parliament
He did, thats why he wasn't accepted...Truth...they just don't want to hear it.
My friend, her Grandfather was one of Jimmy Sharman's Boxers! Prize fighting for pennies.
the band is getting back together!!!
let us hope they bring the pink jumpsuit too!
I saw the Oils many times (ex. London, Sydney, Alice) but they never played this song. Thanks for posting. 'Love RSITS.
Epic!
Wow, how great it was!
any chance of a 30 year anniversary gig!...what a tune !
